    Things are looking very good on the homestead. It's crazy how well the hay bale, pig pen gardens are doing, and all those volunteer tomatoes. I like your idea of transplanting some, they look like the could very easily be thinned out. Leaving the strongest ones growing in the shade, great idea to develop a low light tomato crop. Interesting that you commented on the loam, and some crops not doing so well. It is pretty dense, no humus or nutrients to speak of, although the tomatoes, and corn are doing pretty well. Onions from seed are a 3 year crop, from sets a 2 year crop. It takes that long to develop good sized bulbs. The greens are tasty though, and can be used in cooking, salads, canning, pickling... Speaking of greens I started to drool just a little when I saw your beets. I love beet greens, heck I love lots of different greens, mustard, collards, turnip, not all are good in salads, but are easily wilted, sauteed and eaten as a side. Having lived in Mexico for 4 years, rice, beans, and greens were a daily staple along with a main dish.
    I'm curious about the winter chicken coop. I know Joel's deep litter barn has access from one side to harvest the bedding to use elsewhere in his gardens. It looks like the back end of yours is designed to be opened for this. That deep litter would be a great blend material for some of that loam of yours. Just passing thoughts...
    Another great update, you had a much nicer day than I. I'm in the process of prepping and painting my house. I mean it's nice to upgrade the outside of your property, but you can't make a fine meal out of it. lol

      Thanks. Yes we kept the back side of the green house open so we can easily get in there and clean it out. I cant wait to get it composted and added to the loam! You cant eat it but I bet the house will look Awesome once finished!

    You should approach a nursery to barter pasture raised meats for trees blueberries ect. Great place to put up a yardsign. Start taking thanksgiving bird orders if you have the grass to pasture.

      The nursery runs a loyalty program. Buy 500.00 before (date) and pick up your free turkey on November 20-23. Build and sell the hog panel tractor greenhouses auto gardening system with birds delivered. Set up a demo at the nursery on there yard. You teach how to on birds and soil..they supply plants, straw and tractors. Muscovy ducks don't quack.

    Al I have a story to tell you about eating beets, I have always loved to eat beets, that being said when I was a young boy I had eaten beets for dinner and as you say if you eat enough your urine will turn red, well as a young boy I did not know that would happen and when I urinated later that evening I noticed the red color in the toilet bowl. I told my mother that I was peeing blood and when she saw it she woke my father up and made him drive us to the ER, well after several hours and lots of tests, the doctor came in to my hospital room and asked "Did you have beets for dinner?" when my father heard that he about had a heart attack because he had spent half the night in the hospital and had to pay for an emergency room visit and all the testing to find out I had eaten lots of beets for dinner, oh and not to mention my father was a log truck driver and that meant he had to get up before the sun was up, and here he spent his precious sleeping time with myself and my mother in an emergency room. He was glad later that there was nothing serious wrong with me but that was beside the point. Take care and enjoy those beets when harvest time comes.

    I felt so happy to see my first cherry tomato this summer.... I have other larger tomatoes growing, keeping my fingers crossed. I only have only one zucchini plant in a pot with just one zucchini growing, now I want a whole garden full. My squash plants are in a raised garden, only a couple are growing..... I can't wait for next year and have a much bigger garden! Love your joy in all your vegetables and animals, very contagious!! I don't know where you get your energy. That is a great new electric fence.....love all the little chicks....Thanks for making me a beginning Wannabe Modernsteader!

    I have done that, (peeing red from beets). I remember when my sister in law was starting my niece on solid foods, she didn't like anything but carrots, well, that is all she fed her. After about a week my niece turned orange!! It was the greatest thing! This was well before smart phones and no-one got a picture of her, but it was great!

      Hey, Sorry this has taken a few days, We left for vacation right after I sent this comment. We actually took some of the veggies with us to my son's house in northern Ohio. We live in Southern Ohio.. The corn was good, but I was a little dissapointed because it wasn't as sweet as I remember. We bought "Peaches & Cream" seeds and it seems to me they had a slightly sweeter flavor than what this batch had. I may go back to "Silver Queen" next year.

    Pigs, like people, pass tomato seeds able to germinate. A friend got a load of treated sludge from a sewage plant to fertilize his lawn, In the spring there were millions of tomato plants in his yard.

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому

      Greg Kifer that is too funny. We does he live that he was able to get sludge from a sewage plant

    • @gkiferonhs

      We live in Kansas City area. Every now and then they clean out the treated sludge and make it available. You want to avoid the high summer unless you're composting it or you'll get lots of tomatoes.

They also like to suggest hard to come by things they like that you could produce for them........varieties of mushrooms ( valuable and easy to grow), lamb, herbs, whatever....just a thought. It looks like your going to have so much a pick it yourself organic vegetable business . I'm sure there's lots of regulations though.
