      PHEVs don’t make sense if your daily commute is longer than the EV range (for the majority of the year). The whole point is to be able to do the majority of your driving in EV, saving the ICE for longer trips. This means your actual mpg will be incredibly high, your maintenance will be minimal, and you’ll have a minimum of heat cycles on the ICE. Folks buying PHEVs to not plug them in or daily them beyond the range are screwing themselves daily.

    • @EUC-lid
      @EUC-lid 3 місяці тому +5

      @@shaananwalsh7513 most PHEVs get worse mpg than the lighter hybrid in the same car. If you still need to heat cycle the engine just as much, still burn gas every day, and visit the gas station every week you’re not really saving anything. Just by a standard hybrid and save many thousands of dollars and get better mpg day in and day out.

    I got my 2023 Prius Prime XSE Premium in September. In the 6 months I've had the car, I've only put $35 in gas. That's in California, where gas is more expensive too.
    I love driving it in EV mode. It has a good amount of low-end torque, so it's fun to drive from a dead stop. When I need more power, I switch to HV mode. I drive about 10-15 miles per day so I charge it in my garage every 2-3 days. The EV range has increased by a couple of miles. Was regularly 39 miles, and now it's 41 miles.
    BTW, I paid MSRP and waited about 6 months for it.

    Thanks for the video and review of the car. Having a virtual test drive saves some of us from trekking down to the stealership. I've been a Prius fan since Toyota introduced the car. I bought the first generation in October 2002 and it was fairly trouble-free with 57 mpg on the highway and 45 in the city. The Prime model that you demonstrated to us, I feel has some serious deficiencies: lack of headroom in back for six feet plus passengers (all my immediate family fall between 6 foot and 6 1/2 feet tall. The quirky dash with the faraway gauge cluster with small fonts is a huge turnoff with some part of the steering wheel always obstructing and occupying the crotch area. The thick A pillars are monstrously huge and adds to the claustrophobic attribute of the high visual obstruction to the rear. And the heat-pump doesn't work below 14 degrees in the winter, necessitating running the engine over the electric battery for defrost or heat. I think that a standard Prius or better yet, a hybrid Corolla or Camry might be a better and much cheaper value, especially in a colder climate, and they would have better outward visibility.

  • @madlucio70
    @madlucio70 2 місяці тому

    I love that Toyota saves the engine like this in its hybrid tech. I was initially worried about this in my Crosstrek PHEV (which uses parts from the previous Prius PHEV system) because I live in a cold location and the engine fires up on me sometimes when I do not expect it. I noticed that the engine was warming, but not giving me the extra power until the warm-up cycle was complete.

    I took a look at this updated/refreshed Prius when I was car shopping six months ago. As someone who is on the shorter side (5 ft 5 in), I felt like the headroom in the second row was not adequate. I decided that a RAV4 Hybrid fit more of my needs in the long run.

    • @LuigiGodzillaGirl
      @LuigiGodzillaGirl 27 днів тому

      I’m in the same boat, but a little taller. But unless RAV 4 Hybrids or Primes can someday match or exceed the EPA rated fuel economy of my Prius V, I’m sticking with what I have until it dies on me, and I find myself settling for a standard Prius. As long as l have friends and family with a van or SUV, I am okay favoring MPG over cargo space. Ideally, I’d like Toyota to bring the Prius V back so I can enjoy the benefits of both worlds, but given how poorly it performed in sales last time, I don’t see that happening.

  • @bellotriggerfish

    I love this POV style. It makes me feel like that's how it is driving the car. My current commutes are split between one week of driving regular road posted 40-45 mph to just go from home to work. I would definitely put it in EV mode only. On the other week, I gotta do highway driving for about a total of maybe 55-60 miles. I would definitely put the car in hybrid mode for that. The ~$40K for this kind of a small car is a little worrisome, but so are the current prices in general. I like the fact that this Prime version has a solar panel in the roof. I think every car that has some form of electric engine should be equipped with that. It's just simply an additional source of energy to charge the battery. Where I live (in Illinois), we get plenty of sunshine during the summer months. It would totally be worth it.
    Judging by the video, the handling of this car looks really really good. And so does the acceleration. I am driving a 2014 Ford Fusion S, and man, that car can feel sluggish, and my transmission has these weird engine stalls at times. Anyway, the point is: I feel like switching to a car like this. If only I hadn't driven that Tesla Model 3 on that one week-end my car was out for service. THAT was a very nice ride!!! But this new Prius seems like the next best thing. Also: I am a renter, and don't have a plug here at my home to charge. So maybe the Hybrid will just do fine.

    Great review as always!
    I think people who balk at the price of this car, forget that the Prius (and Prime by extension)has had declining sales volume over the last decade. This new generation Prius is for a very niche market and Toyota prob assumes that old gen prius owners are going to move on to a hybrid or PHEV crossover.
    Toyota has a hybrid option for virtually all their vehicles which puts the prius in a complex position in the lineup. The price point of the prius has moved up market to try and poach consumers who would otherwise buy a fully electric vehicle (Tesla M3 Kia EV6 Hyundai Ioniq 5 etc).
    PHEVs are always going to be more expensive than traditional hybirds and that has always been the case.
    Our car market has shifted and what was once "cheap" is not the case anymore. In order to keep the prius alive Toyota did a whole 360 redesign which also meant an increase in price. I would say if one is looking for a budget hybrid option then a corolla hybrid is the best bang for your buck.

      @@J3wFro69 yes, but how can Tesla have way better speakers than JBL for a base model, rear vents, VERY quiet road noise/road noise (engine noise obviously aside), dual climate zone, and cameras all around the car for only $38k?
      I test drove the new RWD model 3 and the new Prius prime and was shocked that the Tesla had double paned glass all around and you hear 0 noise from the outside. Also on the road you don’t hear any road or wind noise. The Prius prime you hear roaring off the road and wind constantly and that’s just in EV mode. Also the Tesla had cameras as blind spot monitoring on top of the animation. Also the speakers in the $38k RWD was so crisp and sounded like it had a subwoofer when it didn’t. The Prius had JBL and didn’t sound anywhere as good as the model 3.
      It makes me think how Tesla can sell so much for $38k and the Prius prime for so much for so little refinement.

      @@Alec15000 The build quality difference between a Tesla Model 3 and a Toyota Prius Prime is a chasm. I'll take elevated road noise over squeaks and rattles any day of the week. I'm not even going to get into the fact that a blindspot camera in the dash is a gimmick vs having a notification light in the mirror. However, I wouldn't be surprised from the car company that removed the indicator stalk to save money.

    The Prime (and probably the regular Prius hybrid), does not have an "On-Off" for Re-Gen brakes. They are active regardless of your setting choice. Though, you can select how much regeneration takes place. But, you have to set that when the car is not in motion (and via the steering wheel switches). We have ours set to Max to claim as much energy as possible. The higher the amount of Re-Gen you choose the closer to "one peddle" driving you have. And, of course, it's not the brakes that generate the power when slowing, rather, it's the electric motors. There's one hill we travel every day and when we coast down it, the battery picks-up 2% charge. After three+ months (and close to 4,000Km), we have used one tank of fuel in our Prime.

Secondly, we can charge the battery for about $ .165.That's around one quarter the cost of gas for the battery range. With almost 5,000Km, we have burnt less than one and a half tanks of fuel.
