I want to practice my improv solo abilities but when I play this backing track and try to play something my brain just tells me to play the solo from dogs, probably because I've heard the song like a thousand times but I want to create my own original solos to this backing track. Does anyone have any tips on how to get over this?

just drop the D. you don't run out of frets to do the high notes (exactly 22 frets max) but with the phat Dm9 chord its so good with the bass in it too in that "main" solo. I believe this is what Gilmour did in studio however whilst live it was all a step downtuned :)

Change the pitch, or the tempo. If you hear it differently, like a different bpm, you might play to it differently.
