  • Fifty-eight-year-old Pauline is such a big fan of Christmas that her vast collection of decorations is bringing down a bedroom ceiling, and her house is so full of clutter that a family gathering on December 25 is usually out of the question. However, she is now determined to celebrate Christmas with her young grandchildren in her own home, and helping to make this happen is psychotherapist Stelios Kiosses, with assistance from straight-talking de-clutterers Zoe Steel and Allyson Pritchard. Plus, antiques dealer Greg, whose numerous `repair' projects are taking over girlfriend Judith's house.

    I'm very impressed by this series--the part where Stelios says: "I'm less concerned about the stuff and more concerned about the way it makes you feel"??? THATS something you wouldn't see on TLC in a million years. It feels like most of those shows are only made to put the people on display like they're circus freaks. This show feels a lot more humanizing, and I can tell that they're actually getting help.

They are not dissimilar, in fact there is often comorbidity between the three. There is nothing wrong with noting the parallels between substance abuse, and hoarding disorder. In fact there are treatment models that mimic Alcoholics Anonymous framework for hoarders. Included are Clutterers Anonymous and Hoarders Anonymous. So no, they are not the exact same thing. But YES, 12-step type treatment and intervention models have proven benefical to those suffering from hoarding disorder, just as AA and NA has proven effective in helping those suffering from substance abuse.

    Pauline’s story about her and her sister surviving on a tin of mushy peas for 2 weeks is heartbreaking. My late mother in law and best friend was born in the 1930’s her family was suffering abject poverty. I am writing a children’s book about her last Christmas with her older sister. They were about 3 and 8 years old. Kathleen the older sister took it upon herself to make sure her little sister got a Christmas present. I’m in tears typing this. Imagine being 8 years old, already knowing Santa isn’t coming, and stealing a walnut out of a basket your teacher received as a gift. Kathleen carefully wrapped that Walnut and gave it to her tiny baby sister Mildred. Mildred never forgot that gift. It was only a few months later that Mildred was given up for adoption. There is so much more to her story, but my heart can’t share it all in this thread.

      Same mentality as your father with me as well. Starving almost daily as a child and young adult. Often, just a small glass of juice for dinner because I was broke. Swore I would never go hungry again. I don’t have a lot of brick a brack, or clutter, but I’ve got too much food. It’s time to donate unexpired items and throw out the rest. I know the issue behind the food purchases, but it’s coming to terms that I’m not going to starve again that I have to mentally absorb. It’s been a slow process. That stuff stays with you for life.

Helps if it's staples you like and eat regularly. Another trick the container method: Figure out how much is a good/reasonable amount. Like instead of 1000 cans of food spilling all over, just 50, or whatever amount. The items or food HAVE to be able to fit in that designated space (shelf, cupboard, plastic bin), if not, it's time to use it up by X time or get rid of something. I'm using this method for clothes, decorations, books, and the kids' toys because I struggle to organize and clean and this provides a concrete framework. Hmm...I wonder if the process this program takes to find "de-clutterers" is different from the American program?

    As someone who loves interesting and beautiful antiques, it breaks my heart to see that Greg genuinely does appear to have a tremendous amount of truly rare, gorgeous & valuable items!
    The art deco, art nouveau, liturgical and military items in particular would likely bring in a fortune, not to mention making countless collectors SO happy! It's really quite tragic to see so much lovely old stuff just mouldering away, being destroyed by weather, rodents, insects, etc. He clearly wants to preserve history, but doesn't seem able to comprehend that he's actually destroying it every bit as much as if he'd left it in the rubbish tip.
    Most importantly, though- Judith seems an absolute treasure. She comes off as one of those rare women who are truly lovely, both inside and out. I hope he continues to remember what Stelios told him: she is unique & irreplaceable, more than all his things put together.

    • @daCubanaqt
      @daCubanaqt 7 місяців тому +1

      Being an enabler for someone who has an addiction is such a complex thing. People with addiction can be master manipulators to get what they want. Hoarding enablers are no different than people who have drug and alcohol problems with enablers.
      I would have to say though, most enablers have passive personalities and don’t like confrontation. They’d rather let things be instead of getting into a fight. In a lot of these shows I hear people say, “when my spouse was alive my hoarding/shopping was in check” or “I wasn’t allowed to bring this stuff in the house,” so when that non-passive partner dies the disorder explodes. Not having someone in your life to check your behavior let’s the disorder run amuck. And even when you do have someone in your life telling you it’s a problem, sometimes the disorder is so bad, it doesn’t matter.
      So I don’t judge the enablers too harshly because most of their personalities just aren’t built to resist. Hoarding disorder is a mental condition that needs professional therapy to manage. A person’s family and friends typically aren’t equipped to handle it. The one thing I can say is now that hoarder disorder has become recognized as its own mental disorder means more awareness and assistance for the person with the disorder and their family.

    One thing I learned from my mother and her sisters is that you need to prioritize your wants. As such, I never buy something simply because it's 'on sale' because you often end up with something that doesn't really meet your needs and desires. Don't buy clothes/shoes that don't fit or work with other items in your wardrobe. As for your house, I figure out what I want and then purchase it resulting in fewer items that make me happy and despite often paying full retail, I spend less in the long run. For instance, I have a few very notable and expensive Christmas items and a nice, sentimental ornament collection rather than piles, stacks, and boxes of cheap dime store type items. A few well places items of quality is easier to enjoy year-after-year than rooms strewn with cheap items. The same goes for kitchen and table ware, clothing, shoes, accessories and jewelry. Even skin and body care, cosmetics and house essentials (soaps, cleaners, toiletries). I'm not a minimalist, but I ensure I have a place for everything and everything in its place.

    Wow. I lived in a terrace house really similar to the one in the first woman's story, and it took me so long to even recognize it as almost the exact same floor plan: my mom is a compulsive cleaner, who doesn't like to hold onto anything, and our house seemed SO huge compared to hers! Even our similar, relatively small kitchen felt *gigantic* compared to hers!

    • @maneckineckbeard1749
      @maneckineckbeard1749 3 роки тому

      @sueldrsyluvsutube It's tough, I have to admit, even though I love my mom. I would often come home from school to find that she'd gone through my belongings like a cyclone, throwing away things that had tremendous sentimental value to me, but which to her were all just "junk" and "clutter."
      She has mellowed a bit with age, though. Now that I'm an adult, she's finally stopped trying to find ways to sneak into my house to clean. But, at one point, many years ago, she used the spare key I'd given her (for emergencies) to come in and "clean up"...which actually meant that she donated a huge amount of my & my husband's possessions, as well as huge amounts of my kids' toys & clothes (which I was either saving for hand-me-downs or which had sentimental value) to charity. She gave away 14 large trash bags of our stuff- including sentimental items I'd saved from my beloved deceased father-in-law- before I came home and stopped it!
      Needless to say, she no longer has a spare key. It sucks to think that I can't trust my own mother in my house, but I've learned my lesson! I know it's a compulsive thing for her that's beyond her control, so I try not to blame her...but that still doesn't mean I ever want her in my house whilst I'm away ever again.
      In some ways, I'd honestly say that it's almost as difficult as living with a hoarder: there's the same total lack of respect for the boundaries, property & space of others. And the same compulsive nature: my mom gets full-on panic attacks when she's not able to clean...just like hoarders get when they're forced to clean.
