After just watching Jason Kenny speed off and take this race before the others even realised (Tokyo 2020 Olympics) I can now really appreciate, the power and skill needed to win this.
@@bodsnvimto I can recommend to anyone to have a track taster session there. It is superb. The feeling of dropping down from the top of the track on the bend and hitting the straights at your max speed is exhilarating!
Check Hoy's coach at 10:18 onwards. He probably saved Hoy's gold there. He knew Hoy had made a small mistake by not going full gas earlier and was URGING him to go 100%. Hoy did so immediately and just hung on in the back straight to prevent the overlap. All time great athlete combined with great coaching = gold.
Replying to SmartyPants: Keirin is a form of motor-paced cycle racing in which track cyclists sprint for victory following a speed-controlled start behind a motorized or non-motorized pacer. It was developed in Japan around 1948 for gambling purposes and became an official event at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Races are about 2 kilometers long: 8 laps on a 250 m track, 6 laps on a 333 m track, 5 laps on a 400 m track. Lots are drawn to determine starting positions for the sprint riders behind the pacer, which is usually a motorcycle, but can be a derny or tandem bicycle. Riders must remain behind the pacer for a predetermined number of laps. Initially it makes circuits at about 25 kilometres per hour (16 mph), gradually increasing to about 50 kilometres per hour (31 mph). The pacer usually leaves the track approximately 600-700 meters before the end. The winner's finishing speed is around 70 kilometres per hour (43 mph).
If the Kilo had stayed in the Olympic programme we might never have seen Hoy make the switch. In the end it probably benefitted his career and increased the total number of Olympic golds he eventually achieved.
Apparently Hoy was furious when the UCI decided to scrap the Kilo for 2008. Before his third Beijing gold medal ceremony, Pat McQuaid (UCI president) said 'you've got to forgive me now! Theres's no way you would have won three gold medals if the kilo was still on the programme'. Hoy replied 'fair enough!'
Love the commentary at 10:28 "Hoy looks beaten". I have to say I was sure he'd be beaten at that point, he went way early & 2 or 3 of the others were coming out of his slipstream, only Chris Hoy could have found the power to win from that position. Incredible athelete!
'Hoy looks beaten'......after all the years of Hoy dominating i would never utter those words until the race was over and confirmed he had lost....man is a machine and i would never have bet against him. Gutted that he retired!
Well, even if this is already a long time ago, I kinda notice that his helmet seems to be the only one with a "tail" to it, the others look like they're normal helmets, while GB's helmet continues to stream behind it.
Marginal gains. Team GB were MILES ahead of the other teams in terms of R&D back then. Great athletes as well, but those little things like the helmet added up to be a significant help.
I am sure Megan Mitchell's comment was in regard to the person who commented "English Legend" Funnily England didn't have a team in the Olympics either.
@Sandwich Cheddar If that is in reply to my comment, you either didn't read it or don't understand it as that's clearly what I said in a different way - team GB also includes Northern Ireland - you get that juvenile?
a short distance race on the velodrome with no possibility for separated lanes (like in track and field athletics) with more than two competitors (check 'individual sprint') only makes sense with a (motor) paced start. I think, they should though change the 6 pace laps to e.g. 2 or 3 pace laps with 2 laps left for the sprint battle, thats sufficient to pick up speed and would make the race more spectacular. The 6 (pace) and 2 (sprint) rule is from Japan, where it was invented in the 1940ies.
Either way, all of the equipment used by the British team is legal under the rules of the Track Cycling federation. I hear a lot of talk about out bikes being better etc... they probably are, but British cycling has huge financial backing from out lottery funding system AND from outside investors, For Example 'Team Sky' road racing team are funded by private investment. Cycling is huge in the UK now and it is rewarded financially, that is why the LEGAL equipment may be better.
Can someone explain why there's a pacer for the first 3 laps? Is it to reduce the risk possible collision at the beginning of the race when they're starting to pick up speed...?
+Murph L The Derny is used to bring the riders up to a certain speed before pulling off. It differs from disciplines like the pursuit or a sprint which have a dead start.
Look at Hoy's helmet its aero dynamic the others are not. And as the other guy said in reply they are all allowed to wear their aero stye helmets if they wanted to.
i don't understand why there are two finals for keirin? what's the point of the first final (7-12th) if there's no medals for it? can somebody explain...?

Chris Hoy get's plenty of attention in Scotland and even has a veledrome names after him, Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world and Mo Farah is English.so the English media will obviously big him up more. What a ridiculous statement you just made to be honest and it makes you look stupid and ignorant.

Alex Lintern indeed he does :)

We have the Chris Hoy velodrome here in Glasgow now. They have his bike and his kit on display. His kit is tiny!!! That man is all thigh!

Yeah, it's got nothing to do with the fact that Usain and Mo are black and Chris is white. And if you believe that you will believe anything.
More likely it has to do with the lack of support for cycling in U.S. How many Americans have even seen a bike track, much less ridden one!
