Good question. From having lived in Mexico, there they would burn them off but these folks don't seem to care about that. I'm guessing this type of cactus doesn't have as many needles, but I still feel bad for the cows.
For dairy cattle it is advisable to under go a yeast fermentation for six hours prior to feeding. Normally, the cactus only has 4% protein content. The yeast transforms it to a protein content of 38%. Can you use a cheap feed with high protein content for your dairy cows?
@@estebancorral5151 can you give a bit more information please? I'm from SA, and I'm very serious about some fodder for our terribly dry summers. How do you ferment, how do you do it, what yeast strain do you use?
My grandpa in Mexico used to feed his cattle that sometimes
The needles get blinded up enough not to hurt their mouths or stomach?

Yes, the spines can cause injuries when eaten by livestock. They are removed by burning or by chopping off.

I also hope they are removed meticulously, because the thorns will hurt them. 🌺🙏
