I love that you show the human side of how frustrating our hobby can be. Awesome that you can be so honest about trouble areas and how you overcame them. Great video
how does youtube know that i was thinking about this the last days.... to combine scale model and electronics..... ? strange..... but you did an amazing job here!
After this one I don't think I can build a scale model "regular" anymore. My next project (after my explainer video for the electronics) is to modify a Tamiya 4x4 Type 95 Kurogane to be Radio Controlled.
You ran into a lot of problems at the finishing stage, but the final result is actually pretty gnarly! And there seems to be no trouble with the electronics! That is some serious skill-set that a lot of modellers would be very proud of having!
after 8 months of doing this hobby i have not come close to how well you have done this well done! Tip: paint the little lens of the goggles on the pilot silver it gives a nice shiny affect
Subbed! Fun script with a Lake Woebegone esque voiceover, ASMR sounds, calming music, next level electro-digital-scale-modelling, casual reference to chatGPT...
Looks great Martin! Thank you for sharing this build. Just remember that everyday is a learning day. Especially when it comes to our favourite hobby. Please keeps those builds coming. Kindest Regards, Ray from Sydney Australia
Haha...I remembered this one way back 70 something, I'm just a teenager that time. I simply chose this kit because it's got plane with silver scheme...so easy to paint so me think...ha...ha...but you know what the outcome of it if you used paint brush only..lol
I have brass tube & rod that fit exactly precisely to do stuff like this but haven't yet. My brother did a Lightning. If you switch the wires on one side you get counter rotation. He actually got it to taxi. The brass is meant for true rotation & friction protection. Good job. My dream kit is a 1/48 scale Pete. Many decal sheets suck. A sad thing amid the sea of technical accuracy.
Great build! Love the realism you added. Subd! When you started the prop i expected to see smoke coming out of the exhaust it was so real looking. Great job!
It has been 40 yrs for me....still considering it. Number one thing you could do is provide an equipment/bill of materials list of every tool, knife, mat, tape, clips, etc. you would recommend to have as a starter kit to get back into it. Also, any recommendations around paint types and brands. I have checked out a few channels but havent found one that really addresses this in a comprehensive way for a newbie or returning newbie.
It's a very old kit so it's probably better to use for this reason. Nice result. When it comes to chipping Japanese paint was notorious for peeling unevenly with some aircraft looking like a flying wreck when it had only been in service for a week and perfectly fine.
Cool work! I suggest using a micro stepper motor to do the spinny things because you can modulate the speed and acceleration much more precisely and you don't have to have a gearbox.
I've actually been looking into it, but I don't know that I can fit a driver in a plane this size. Down the line I'm looking at doing folding wings or landing gear and I don't know that I'll have room for 2-3 drivers
Thanks, Corsair is def on my list, I may look for a 1/32 so that I can do powered folding wings. I have a Wildcat I have to do first though. And a couple more things for my japanese airfield
Pretty cool. If you do this again, it might be cool to have the wires come out of the wings and then go to a fuel truck or something so they look like hoses.
The navigation lights (green/red) on the wingtips of WWII planes and modern planes, all burn steady, no blinking. I don't think there was any blinking or stroboscopic light on those old Japanese planes.
I am looking for tiny ones on aliexpress to give it a shot. I have some other coreless motors and speed controllers coming, so I'll be experimenting with those for my next one
Nice little project there Martin. Have you thought about using fibre optic filaments for the lights and hiding the leds in the fuselage or in the base?
I haven't, but I'll definitely look into it. If I add lights to my next one I'll see about using them, it would be nice to use addressable LEDs so I could control color, and flashing. If I make a 1/32, I'd like to make the guns shoot with sound effects and lights. But we'll see
They are the GodHand Ultimate Nipper 5.0 GH-SPN-120 for Plastic Models. I wouldn't normally buy something so expensive, but my wife bought it for me for Christmas (she was already getting her brother one). There are similar ones in the 20-30 dollar range. Keep in mind they are brittle and will break super easy if you aren't cutting properly
I 3D printed this one: www.thingiverse.com/thing:5655460 This one might be better, but I haven't printed it. grabcad.com/library/modelers-aircraft-ship-jig-1
I think you did a great job! Unless you point out your mistakes, no one will know. Scratch building electrics and soldering are above my paygrade, so I solute you! 👍The wobble in the prop: Is that from a miss placement of the cone?
Most likely when I drilled the prop out for the output shaft I didn't drill it true, so the prop is mounted slightly off. Also the cone isn't glued on, so if I bump it it makes the wobble more noticeable.
@@MartinMakesIt Actually I learned my lesson on straight/true drilling on a modification I did for the Tamiya Ducati. Note to self: Dremel Drill Press! 😅
I probably wouldn't go as heavy in the future. But my inspiration was from this thread: forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?/topic/52770-why-do-japanese-paint-chip-so-much/ Shows a lot of heavy paint chipping on some of them
Yeah, I know, I had used the lacquer on the seat and it seemed to work, but I guess it was only a light coat on the seat, whereas on the fuselage I did multiple coats. My dad bought me a ton of mr color paint when he encouraged me to start up again and I'm having a hard time justifying buying a full set of acrylics
great job! thanks for sharing. I guess you're a pro in electronics and that you don't need it but you may be curious about our module (WiFi too, with a dedicated app on Smartphone). If so, please drop me a message. Christophe
It is a regret that the spinner isn't perfectly aligned. I wasn't thinking a lot about precision when I was lining up the motor and prop. I should have been more careful about drilling and tapping the prop so it was perfectly aligned and been more careful to make sure the motor was pointing directly out.
I apologize for those parts being too quiet, I'm still learning about how to mix the audio. And the actual whispering... well that was a creative choice, sorry if that doesn't sit right with you :)
Fully agree. While I may not have touched a model kit since I was a kid, I have a lot of other hobby experience over the years, and have watched extensive videos and read many books and magazines on the hobby before I opened the box.

I like how you made mistakes but didn't sweat it. Just showed us how to correct them. I would be proud to have that plane on my shelf. Great job.
Love this build. Schematics and a video on how you coded it would be great!
For the green and red lights at the tip of both wings, I took light conducting glass fiber 0,5 mm. The light is emitted by a 5mm LED in the fuselage.

The wires can be hidden using a fuel tanker and the hose is the wire or fit a 1s lipo with a side panel that opens to charge very easy to do👍

I have a large model of a B-1B Lancer and I wanted to remote control the variable-geometry wings and lighting.
If I ever do one of those or a F14, I'll for sure do that too!

Any age, any guy likes building models.
I know some here in the U.K., who’d mock guys for building model kits, because it “wasn’t cool” or whatever. I worked with such people.
I’d love a motor kit to put in model planes to make the propeller spin and have sound and light effects?
Can you build a Spitfire? Put a motor in it, the Spitfire was the most popular fighter. Even Americans had them.

Btw .you can use the blu tac to pick its self up just pat it over the area the blu tac will come right off and stuck to it's self..ez pzy. 👍🤙
Its so cool to see, however in my opinion the sound couldve been a little louder, so as not to hear the engine inside but rather the real sound
No doubt about it, it is my main regret with the build that the electric motor is so loud and the speakers are so quiet.
