Welcome to Martin Makes It
This channel is primarily for my journey into the world of plastic scale modeling. When I was a kid I put together scale models and haven't touched one in 25 years. And now that I'm deep into my midlife crisis, I sold my sports car and bought an airbrush.
Follow along as I build my first models.
Don't expect amazing results, techniques or a tutorial.
I also enjoy electronics, 3d printing, and cameras. So there will be content related to that from time to time.

Gunpla Diorama! Decapitated Gouf! Filament LED Sword, custom LEDs
Sorry for taking so long to upload a video. I have been busy with my full time job and my toddler who soaks up almost all my free time.
I made this diorama after my wife bought me a the HGUC 107 MS-06F2 Zaku II F2 kit. The mobile suit was featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. I decided to make a diorama using this kit and the HGUC 017 Dom Tropen to recreate the moment in the anime when the Zaku gets his head cut off.

Add spinning prop, lights and sound to your scale model using a microcontroller and chat-gpt code

This is the tutorial video for my Tamiya KI-84 wifi controlled scale model. This is a brief run down of how I used Chat-GPT to write most of the code for my KI-84 build. I realize I left out demonstrating everything together using the webpage, sorry about that. But it works exactly like the start of the video. Check out this wifi enabled 1/48 scale Tamiya KI-84 Hayate (Frank) 1/48 scale model. This is my 2nd model after my 25 year break from scale model building. I decided I wanted to add a little extra to this model so it has a motor, speakers and lights! All of that is controlled via a webpage over my local network! Sorry about some of the bad voice over, used a different microphone :( Don't forget...
First scale model build in 25 years! Revell SBD Dauntless 1/48 scale full build

SBD Dauntless Revell 1/48 scale build. I used to put together models as a kid without painting or any finishing, but I haven't touched one for more than 25 years. Will it be a disaster? Awesome work
Went through the same situation, getting back in the hobby is easy and you are amazed at what you have forgotten and still remember. It's all good, it comes back pretty quick and with all the new channels to discover you learn new things each day. Welcome back, hope you stick around ;)
Dauntless is a beaitiful shape ! The curves all just fit together perfectly . looks like they painted over the red on the star markings ?? beautiful job martin , loving the in-flight pose .
nice build
The navigation lights (green/red) on the wingtips of WWII planes and modern planes, all burn steady, no blinking. I don't think there was any blinking or stroboscopic light on those old Japanese planes.
I need to be brave enough to do this to some of my builds :o
Awesome diorama. All the electronics insight is very helpful
Friendly fire?
In the Anime the Zaku is controlled by the Federation. They had obtained it to do training exercises to learn about the enemy. The pilot Chuck Keith had been using it in mock combat. Zeon forces then stole the RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis" and Keith with the Zaku II was in the team tasked with getting it back.
@@MartinMakesIt Ohh you are right, it was used in Stardust Memory training sequence, i forgot about that one.
Those are some very odd looking gundams you got there 😂
Oh sorry are they not technically Gundam? They would just be mobile suits? Sorry I don't have all the terminology down yet. I don't know what to title the video then. Thanks for pointing that out!
@MartinMakesIt no worries, gundams are the ones used by the main characters they usually have horns and a more humanoid face. The ones you have are used by the antagonists and are grunt suits kinda like stormtroopers. Maybe you can title the video something like can an led fit in a 1/144 zaku head
@@MartinMakesIt very cool video, the diorama looked cool, I tried putting LEDs in a 1/144 gundam kit I had but it didn't work out.
@@teaguy2754 Ah yeah I see now, I'll make sure I use the right terminology going forward. I was just using gundam as sort of a catch all. Thanks for commenting!
amaizing i watched it on my laptop and when i scrolled down to the comments i saw that you only had 1060 subscribers i tough you would have more based on the quality of your vid
Thanks. Yeah I just don't have enough time to upload regularly. I have a ton of projects I want to work on, but sometimes I only get 30 minutes a week to actually do something. I recently got some time off work and managed to put this together. I'm hoping to do similar stuff in the future, I'm always open to suggestion :).
I do have a Suggestion if you do another diorama with gunpla gut one MS in half across the Torso and maybe the arm of aswell paint the Inner side in glowing Orange so it looks like Molten metal and another MS or gundam with a beam saber so it Looks like it got sliced
I love that idea! I wonder if there is some way to use little lights to make it look like glowing embers or molten metal like you said. Not sure what I'm doing next, but I'll keep this in mind!
I think that could work depending on the model
I had this kit and to be honest, I really disliked it. the fit was terrible and the raised rivets made filling and sanding absolute hell and for 1/48 scale the cockpit details were so disappointing. due to these I just gave up on the model, glad someone made it work lol.
Nice job after a 25 year hiatus. Thanks for sharing.
loved the build of this old classic monogram kit, you did a very good job of it- particularly the canopy masking was excellent- you might try using wooden clothes pegs, they have a flat and curved section to hold bombs etc. love your sound effects too,
I really enjoyed this!!!
I hang mine on the ceiling. I leave the prop in tact but I don't paint the yellow tips, to make it a little less noticeable. I paint the canopy frame by hand. It's close enough for ceiling display. The SBD is my next build. Thanks for sharing your experience. Thank dad too! :)
you have asmr potential
Love your personality, gave me quite a few chuckles, hell yeah, man!
Thank you for explaining steps
I read the COMMENTS… This is an old post… I THINK IT LOOKS GREAT CHRIS 🇺🇸
I love how you show your little mishaps. It’s easy to get discouraged when something like that happens. Happy to know I’m not the only one hahaha.
Build part was good. Listening to sanding stick scratching BAD.
Wow engine sound with mechanical noise is very touching. HAYATE(GALE)Ki-84 looks real.
I have this same kit. It clearly states in the instructions to put the bottom wing half on first then glue the top half on. Also, the instructions tell you not to glue the parts like the arrester hook and bomb release. That's all optional though, i guess. ...I'd also like to add that this kit is really not that great. It's not very detailed and it has some fit-up issues. It goes together more like a toy you can play with not so much for static display with things like movable landing gear, tail hook, and main bomb release. Over all, I'd say this could be a good kit for beginners that just need to get a few models under their belt. If you're looking for something with more detail, go with another kit.
great job! thanks for sharing. I guess you're a pro in electronics and that you don't need it but you may be curious about our module (WiFi too, with a dedicated app on Smartphone). If so, please drop me a message. Christophe
Hey Martin, What a dandy build of an old classic. Welcome back to the dark side. I bought a ProBoy myself not long ago but, haven't put a spot of paint through it yet. What was your previous airbrush? What sports car did you sell? LOL Welcome to the community. Best of luck with the channel. Your doing pretty good already.
Ah, rookie errors. I still make them every kit :) And, one can't have too many clamps... ;)
The dive pose is really beautiful with the highlights of the light.
Neat :)
I built this kit in the 1970’s, it was a bit toy-like as it had a dropping bomb with a trigger sticking out of the rear bottom….retractable landing gear, dive flaps, etc….but was great fun to a 14-year old, dive bombing the family cat.
Same here.
Great vid. Appreciate the admission of mistakes. Though seems you were led astray by bad advice from that magazine. I have returned to model making after about 45 years and have had a mix of fun and frustration. UA-cam has definitely helped with builds of kits that I’ve also bought. Look forward to watching further builds from you.
Fantastic job, turned out really nice!
This channel is heavily underrated, one of the coolest twists on modeling I’ve ever seen. Can’t wait to see you grow and what else you bring next. Keep the good work up, man!
Wow, thank you!
I would be interested in a kit for sure
Agreed
Cool work! I suggest using a micro stepper motor to do the spinny things because you can modulate the speed and acceleration much more precisely and you don't have to have a gearbox.
I've actually been looking into it, but I don't know that I can fit a driver in a plane this size. Down the line I'm looking at doing folding wings or landing gear and I don't know that I'll have room for 2-3 drivers
looks great
Amazing JOB!!!!
Great stuff! Can you list the electronic products you used to promote motion and sound?

Hey there from Australia it’s great to see that you’re enjoying modeling I have been modeling for over 50 years and I have built some amazing projects, so I think and have had some major failures but just keep Modeling and good or bad you’re never too old to keep learning. Cheers Steve.
HEY try sonic toothbrush for chipping some paint layers ;)
I always wanted to turn a model into a rc. You are enjoying my child dream. enjoy while i enjoy the video
For the green and red lights at the tip of both wings, I took light conducting glass fiber 0,5 mm. The light is emitted by a 5mm LED in the fuselage.
Very cool!👍👍👍
After 25 this model came out really fine.I have been off modelling a couple of years too , sure set me up nicely to start again.
Haha...I remembered this one way back 70 something, I'm just a teenager that time. I simply chose this kit because it's got plane with silver scheme...so easy to paint so me think...ha...ha...but you know what the outcome of it if you used paint brush only..lol
Danke ! Eine meiner Lieblingsmaschinen !
For a second model and encountering so many problems I think you finished with a great model. 👍🏼 Subbed. Ian
Can you make a red baron one?
Another proud graduate... of glue bomb U !
Dude, 25 years is not a break. That's retirement, and you came out of it.😂😂😂
Care to share how to do the ChatGPT stuff?
Yeah I'm working on a video now with the schematics and code, I'm going to try and go through the whole process
