I'm German and I agree with most of it. But it's not true that Germans print everything. My first day at my new job I didn't find any sheet of paper or a pencil/pen. Everything works digital.
that really depends on the company or simply the field you work in. sometimes even the department within a company makes a huge difference.
Die Zukunft... die Zuuukuuuunft
I suppose you don't live in Berlin or Brandenburg. They still have faxes...
@@starlinguk I do! I live really rural about 60 kilometers away from Berlin.
I am on the job for 2 years now and printed something once. And that was a private form for whatever it was back then.
A lot of these videos are made as contrast to the USA. Because this isn’t typical German. It’s normal in all European countries. And in the rest of the world
Something can be bothered typically German (as in normal in Germany) and common in the rest of Europe.
True it’s beautiful thing in many parts of Europe
Been lving in Germany for a while now and I love it here!❤
That's nice I see you really enjoying your staying there In Germany. Sorry greetings from the royal Prince
I live in Canada and it took me 5 years to get 3 weeks of paid vacation, 10 years to get 4 weeks and 20 years to get 5 weeks.
The company only allowed me 7 days sick leave (for an 8 hour day). Since I worked 12 hour days that meant a sick day equaled 1.5 days. As a rule, I never took sick days, no matter how sick I felt!
The company kept parroting this thing about "work / life balance" but piled on the work beyond anybody's capacity to do it effectively. Management said they were surprised to see that most employees were very dissatisfied with their job. 😂
I moved from Canada to Switzerland. From the first year I got 5 weeks , when I turned 50 it was 6 weeks and when I turn 60 it will be 7 weeks paid holidays. You can have sick days, just don’t overdo it. Too many sick days and you will have to report to HR to do some explaining. If it happens too often you can be terminated. Most companies also pay a 13th month salary.
After a certain amount of years with the company a loyalty bonus is paid. One moving day a year is a paid absence. A certain amount of days are also paid for when a death in the family occurs. Yearly bonuses are also paid. Parental leave is at least 2 weeks for fathers and 14 weeks for mothers.
@@rehrbar switzerland is a LOT harsher than Germany
But the pay is way better in Switzerland
But anything else is also way more expensive in switzerland
@@allesklar221 The pay may be better but the health insurance premiums and housing are killing a lot of young families financially.
At the end of the month there is very little left to save.
Humm sounds like you’re over 50 and work foe a large telecommunications company 😂
I think the standart here is mostly 30 days paid vacation. So 6 weeks.
In Germany, in my first job, I had 42 days of paid vacation, and 14 months salary.
Thats nothing in my first job i hab 82 days paid vacation and 28months salary 👍🤷♂️

How did the vacation days surprise you if you are British? The range of days seems similar to the UK.
They needed something to fill the video i guess🤣
They could of used Americans

@@businessdevil7094 With a Scottish accent?
In the UK you get 28 days guaranteed holiday leave per year, which is actually more than Germany. This video is strange.
They do love their 1-month holiday when they all go to Spain to get tanned and dip in the Mediterranean 😊
I work in the public service in Germany and I can confirm we LOVE paperwork.
It’s one of the worst things about Germany
True @@mark9294
That's why I love my job here in America because it does very similar things My first vacation is going to be 19 days with full pay
If you're a Scot, it shouldnt be a surprise as things are pretty similar in the UK
I have 41 days right now that I don't know what to do with. I have so much vacation. US worker.
Yeah but you work in youre vacation in the us also in germany you get payed while being in vacation
Travel?
@@Smokemahounno we get paid vacation in the USA. It’s just not mandated by the government.
Legal minimum is 24 weekdays!!!, 4 weeks!!!, if you work only on 4 days in a week you get only 16 days.
It is stupid to talk about 20 days if you don't tell how many days someone works in a week. If someone works 6 days it is 24 days, if less, the days shrink.
So be carefully what's standing in your contract, must be business days, not only days.
24 days are only 4 weeks, 24 business days are almost 5 weeks. Small difference!
That's the legal minimum. I work 5 days a week and get 30 days = 6 weeks vacation, which is common.
Idk, my parents only get 10 days of vacation annually and work 5-6 days a week
@@user-qf5kl6cv2y May I then assume that your parents live in a country with irresponsible politicians and antisocial labor laws. Something like the United States of America or the People's Republic of China, where workers are shamelessly exploited.
Different rules apply in the European Union! They make sure that employees can recover.
I believe Germany has a number of well-known health retreats and spas to cater to all those vacationing employees.
I work in an office job and don't even know when I last printed something
I would love to work in Germany, I'm now looking forward to. Only barrier is the language really but I think I don't have to be entirely fluent in German before going there.
If you would like to have a good job, you need to know the language.
Why is the vacation time a surprise if you're from the UK? Most of Europe have similar systems
My father always said his work was a nasty break in his vacation, lol.
You’ve got a Scottish accent, you get all the same things here 😂
22 days was the UK standard plus 8 days public holidays. This is dependent on the employer's teems however and some sectors offer more annual leave.Being allowed to take them when you want however is variable and discouraged if you want to climb the ladder. Lazy people thrive in Britain just as much as dedicated ones and the public sector is just a joke.
I've been retaliated at in almost every office I've ever worked in in the USA for taking my vacation days or sick days it's impossible to prove in court but it's what happened😂
In the U.K. we get 28 days
Min. 2 per month on fulltime job thats 24.
Overtime isnt always paid
I'm an American working in USA and I get 26 days. I am not alone. I worked in Germany for 20 years and it is true that Germans love their time off/vacation. You forgot to mention the time off they get for child birth, funerals and moving days. There are also additional days for Kur leave. Germans go on vacation and begin planning their next vacation as soon as they return.
My dad’s definitely using all of that to its fullest. I remember how he once managed to get off three weeks because of a mild cold 😅
On the other hand, when he knows something important is coming up at work, he holds everyone who is even mildly sick at arm’s length and tells us to isolate 😂
Sounds like a bad worker. Hope you didnt attach your name to your youtube because your dad can 100% get fired for that
@@AkorekLPnah, it’s all good. My dad is one of the most devoted workers there, always working overtime and so on. But sometimes he just needs the sick days- sure, he relaxes for a couple days to get better but then does home office for the rest of the time :)
And again, he always manages to go to work when something very important is happening. But that’s so sweet about Germany. You’re sick, you stay home. You tell your doctor, they’ll let you stay home for a week longer 🤷🏽
@@AkorekLP not uncommon in Germany, my doc in germany doesnt bother with sick leave certificates under 10 working days

Sounds like a really competent, trustworthy man of skill. You must value your health a lot!
U.S. here. Union job. Right now I get 12 Holidays that I can take whenever, plus 15 vacation days (3 weeks). Also 120 hours of sick leave to accumulate throughout the year. In addition to various reward days (like for doing a PT test, or not calling in sick for a 6 month period.)
Additionally, we are given the opportunity to take “compensatory time” instead of OT if we so choose, but that caps at 240 hours (30 workdays). I’m capped out on that as well.
Additionally, you can carry over a week of vacation a year (caps at 6 weeks). And the longer you’re on, the more vacation they give you. Next year I’ll bump up to four weeks (20 days) of vacation time, and eventually can get 6 weeks a year.
It’s nice to be able to take time off here and there, helps with burnout. America needs to get back to more union jobs, especially in service sectors.
The rewards for not getting sick sounds like toxic American work culture.
Anyways, getting your overtime in free days is pretty common in Germany but most people just avoid getting overtime. And carrying vacation days into the new year is also normal. You can take those 1-2 months into the new year. My parents always used this to go skiing 😊
I’m glad you you got all of this bin in Germany that’s legit the law. I don’t get why Americans don’t fight for this. Or even parental leave, parental sick days, cheep child care or like healthcare 🤷🏼♀️
@@Sandfrau I’d rather get the reward for not getting sick than get nothing at all.
Men and women get paid parental leave at my job. My point isn’t that it’s better than Germany’s system or anything. Just that the U.S. needs to get back to having higher rates of union membership. It leads to less income disparity, a more skilled and productive workforce, and a happier workforce that can provide for their families. As well as less extreme income disparity.
the concept of a set amount of sick days or sick time in general is so weird to me. always feels like US employers think people will call in sick every second day just for fun.
@hannah2729 a lot of ppl would bc so many ppl hate their jobs lol
@@hannah2729 We have a sick abuser list at work. People who call out sick all the time, even when they’re not really sick, and screw over the other people on their shift. They blow through all their sick time despite having no real ailments, and then go begging for sick time donations when something real actually comes up. It happens.
I have a chronic lung disease not that it’s got anything to do with this but ,, I have a list of places I want to go and see, Japan, India , norway ,Germany ,Thailand , Mexico, Africa , but I’d like to no where near the tourist hotspots , I’d like to see the countries as they are for real. One day aye.
When i was working on a BMW launch i noticed they left right at 4 or 5 and did not stay late to finish a task. Then everyone goes on holiday in August. Then once i got there, they piled their projects on me so they could gethome to dinner. While I got stuck at the office many times until 10 pm. The managers loved me and didnt want me to go home to my own country.
You’re not allowed to work more than 10 hours a day, and you need at least 11 hours rest time between two working shifts.
The above is only allowed if agreed upon, in times of seasonal work load or in certain professions. Soon doubt very much your claim that you stayed till 10pm.
Besides, the employer would get in really serious trouble with the authorities, and then there is also the insurance side and Berufsgenossenschaft.
Any extra working hour has to be compensated time wise, so you get the extra work back as free time. All is regulated in the ArbZG und BUrlG, or in a Manteltarifvertrag between the employers and employee workers union!
In Denmark we have 6 weeks vacation a year (sometimes 7, depending on your job). Is there a standard in Germany on vacation days or does it vary?
I think the minimum is 20, but the average is more like 30 days.
Goodness gracious
I now wanna move to germany.
Problem: I took spanish in high school
Move to Spain then! It’s not like this is exclusive to Germany.
You work in a tv company that is getting money by the people like taxes. Work the street over in a normal berlin office and you will see how many hours are recorded and paid
Same here in the USA
Great video. That’s how all the people with the right work ethics want to live in Germany. Keep in mind she is exaggerating. You can be fired as well when your sick leave rate is suspiciously high. There are several legal ways to „let go“ of employees.
I would really love a job in Germany, but I don't have any skills I can offer.

Bro, I went to the dentist in Austria and I never saw a paper, not once. Germany need to sort that out. I barely get given anything by paper in Austria, except my mail. e-mail with a digital signature for signature required documents is all you need.
Which you also can do in Germany 😂
The only paper you get in the Dentist Office IS for your cleaning to you can give it to your insurance to get your Money Back 😅
The only place with a Lot of paper IS Public Administration, but they are switching already and offer both ways. Cant force esp. The older people to get a qualified Email when they dont even know how to use a Computer and have No Wish to learn it
We don't have any paperwork and to be sick is really a bad thing!
Tf you mean vacation days are a suprise? You mean to tell me other countries dont have it so you must use them before the year ends?
Isn't the regular 30 days a year?
No. The legal minimum is four weeks a year, but most better jobs have different contracts. For me 30 days per year is standard, too. But four weeks per year is minimum.

It sounds petty but to me Germanies love for paperwork really makes sense.
I am Dutch. Started this year with more than nine weeks paid leave.
Took this week off, so have eight weeks left.
I believe we get 25 days paid leave, besides the national holidays. Since I didn't take all my days in 2022, I took the leftovers to 2023. In 2023 I took days off every quarter, but apparently didn't finish them all, so took the leftovers to 2024... Hence nine weeks.
All true apart from the printing. Where do you work?!?
I heard that you have to put your vacation days in a year in advance. That’s crazy, but I guess if everyone is taking lots of days, then they need the time to sort out the schedule
noone can enforce any rules to make you give such advance for days off
That is not true
@@Arelias95yeah they can, if you don’t put it in they can decide your vacation days for you
it's not true in every company, but both companies i've worked at so far i had to do this
Depends, what sort of company it is: police/hospital etc would like to have your holiday invadvance to sort the shifts in the wards.
Smaller offices: the people there should talk to each other, that not everybody takes the summer holidays at the same time and your holidays should "go along" with the projects one is working on...

What do you mean, overtime is rarely paid?
It's supposed to be. Always.
