Those German "quiet Sunday" rules are amazing, and the fact that people (mostly) follow them speaks well of German society in my view. They wouldn't work here in the US because a small and immature minority here consider it their right to make a nuisance of themselves.

Not attending church services was even a thing back in the 1950s for men in some Catholic villages. While the women and children listened to the priest's sermon, the men would stand outside, gossiping, and only enter after the sermon was over. And for some farmers the only reason to go to church was the traditional "Frühschoppen" (roughly "morning pint", whereby in the Southwest and the Palatinate a "Schoppen" refers rather to a quarter-liter glass of wine) in one of the village's inns, where they met to gossip after church.

As an immigrant, everything being closed on Sunday was a HUGE shock for me.
Back in India, Sunday was THE day for shopping. Most commercial establishments make extra efforts (& sales) on Sundays. Each type of business has it's dedicated day of rest that is anything but a Sunday.
I find it much more practical -for the consumers as well as the product/ service providers.
For example, it is much nicer for me as an individual if the barber's shop is open on a Sunday. I get extra time to visit his and he gets extra business if the customers are not in a hurry.
He then takes a day off on Monday after the extra hard day of work. He can use this day to do his own shopping, bank trips, parent - teacher meetings etc. Only thing he can't do on a Monday, is get a haircut since other businesses (Cloth stores for example) have other days reserved as rest days.

This has religious roots, basically by religion you should take one day off every seven days thats what jews and christians and to some degree muslims as abrahamic religions have in common. The jews have strict laws on what you are allowed to do and what not. The christians not so Jesus as a jewish reformer (many christians wont like to hear that but jesus basically was a jewish religious reformer, and a real humanist always putting the wellbeings of humans on top of everything, he for instance also stood heavily against racism as we know it and against over the top religious rules), basically said, this day is for the people not the people for this day basically running into conflict with the jewish religious authorities, when he was healing a sick person on sabbath. He also said, why is it allowed to get a donkey out of a hole, but not to heal a person, just to show the utter stupidity of the jewish religious laws in this regard!
Hence we do not have strict rules for this day except for having off, there was a societal pressure to visit church on sundays, heck even by law in the middle ages, but that is not anymore except in smaller villages.
The idea basically is you have a day off to get rid of the stress to tighten family relationships etc... since this is every seven days, you work around that by simply do all your stuff on saturday which also is off for most people except those in the service sector and certain sectors which have exception regulations.
Many countries have abandoned the one day per week off rule by now in favor of generating more profit, but others have stuck to it, Germany and Austria being the prime example!
And frankly spoken most people would not want it another way, this free day off is really good for everybody, to get rid of the weekly stress and be among your family do whatever you want, which at a certain age is spending time with your kids, doing what needs to be done in the flat or house etc..Not having shops open is no tragedy, at least here in austria family businesses and bakeries can open at least for a few hours, so people tend to buy their fresh bread before going into the usual sunday stuff!

If shops are opened on Sunday, a lot of people can't go shopping or do anything else, because they have to work. Sundays are the only days families and friends can really spend together, because almost nobody has to work and all the shopping and stuff has already been done on Saturday (when most people also have free, but stores are open).

The average German there was defined as one 'Thomas Müller' (because Thomas was the most frequent boomer first name!), profession: 'Kraftfahrer' (lorry driver), about 40 years of age, married to a 'Sabine' with two kids, and owning an Opel Astra.

No car wash is open on Sunday. You could wash it in your street, but in a city chances are you get an encounter with the police, as you are probably polluting the ground water with oil residue from the car… in the countryside no one will care though. But best to go to a car wash on a Friday afternoon, when the weekend kinda starts, most people do it then.

Weekends are a great time to go to the sauna. Last weekend I wanted to go to a HUGE and quite expensive place near Cologne, Mediterana. I couldn’t get in because it was full! I mean, this place is massive, it can fit several hundred people, it has 14 different saunas, plus some steam baths and god knows what. And it must have been absolutely PACKED. It’s recommended that you reserve a spot ahead of time on weekends, especially during the winter. 🧖🧖‍♀️❤️‍🔥
