This song is a great relief to those struggling to process such thoughts. Her answer is to process the feelings and let them pass through you instead of suppressing. That's how all her songs have a way out no matter how impossible it feels. That optimism is clear from a scene in her documentary film when her real-life mother intervenes while she's writing these very lyrics.
This song gave me a lot of comfort when I was deeply depresded. Which makes it one of the most important songs of my life. It's intense to listen to it though now. Brings back too many memories and sadness for how I was feeling at that stage.
this song is a warm blanket. it's totally fair if you don't relate. in fact, you're lucky if you don't relate. if you do relate and don't want to, that's fair, too. feelings, man. billie's at her best when she unexpectedly makes you feel shit. love this song. for me, it's a stop and listen. finneas goes hard, too.
Billie did go through a period of time when she was suicidal. She used to self harm. There’s video of her mom coming to the door when her and Finneas were putting this song together and questioning Billie about the lyrics. Asking if they really wanted to go this dark on a song..and if she was seriously implying that she’d jump off the roof. And Billie replies with a very good answer. She tells her mom, “this song is the reason I DON’T do it. I feel it’s better to have said it than actually DOING it.”
She almost did commit, and her mom asked if she thinks it’s too dark to put on an album and Billie said it’s better to write about it than actually doing it. So music is basically therapy for her to pour all her feelings into
I feel the same way about my art. Sometimes it's better to not only express those feelings before it gets to be too much but in a way that isn't hurting yourself or others. It's a great tool that many people should use
I've felt like this for a long time even since i was very young. And no psychologist has been able to help and yet I'm still here for some unusual reason. I wish i knew what that reason is. Some days i wish that i would have never existed.
Billie wrote this at a very dark time in her life. There's a scene in her documentary where her mom is very worried about her and asks her why she wrote such a dark song. Billie replies that singing about it helps her not want to do it.
