- Today i listened to Billie Eilish, who you will know i found on this channel a few years ago. At the time, her lyrics and delivery struck me and i dont know why but i havent listened to much of her since. Today I thought it was about time i listened to her again and today was the turn of 'Listen Before I Go'. It was deep, meaningful and hard hitting, but find out what else i thought of the song on this video!

Her mother asked her if she wanted to go this dark with the album. She said singing about it keeps her from doing it. In an interview she answered honestly and said that at one point she was in a really bad place mentally and considered jumping from the roof or a window. She has said she’s much better now.

Great reaction. In her documentary, you can actually see the very moment she wrote that rooftop line in this song. That scared me, just as it did her mother.
But you're right, she's writing about all the jumbled emotions swirling around in her head. This is her way of expressing and release.
She wrote it, and ever younger than 17 cause that’s how old she was when the song was released but it was written before that. Edit: Everything I Wanted also mentions her suicidal thoughts, everything she wanted was to die, you should check that one out, it has a MV.
I think that was the song I discovered her with tbh. I’ve done quite a few of her songs on the channel :)

this song has aged very well. i feel the same feels when i hear it now that i did when i first heard it. in her documentary, this song is featured throughout. it's one of her catalog that stands out as being mostly written by her and there's a bit of family drama around it. i would say it was probably written when she was 16 (edit: 15). she had released the album about 3 months after her birthday and the album was mostly in the can by december. i recommend the doc, too.

I’ll echo what someone else said about this. In the Billie documentary “the worlds a little blurry”, it shows her mom come to the room and ask about the lyrics to the song..and if she was implying that she’d really jump off the roof. There’s no way out..but down (off the rooftop). Billie tells her mom that writing the song is her way of dealing with the feelings. It’s better to write about it than actually doing it..better than actually going through with it.

Completely agree with you saying that this song focuses on the concept of sorry. They often do that, like in Bellyache when they play with “mind”.
Yeah, she was actually 15/16 ish when she wrote the song. And it was her who wrote it. And of course Finneas is also part of it but this wasn’t one of “his” songs, so to speak. In fact, like someone pointed out, there seems to a kind of affinity thematically between this song and Everything I Wanted, also because they talked in interviews about how they got into a discussion because Finneas didn’t feel comfortable continuously supporting her in making such negative songs any more, so they agreed to focus on their relationship in that song instead, which gives it that more hopeful upswing thematically at least, and I think is a great stepping stone between the albums, and her state of mind and mental health progressing as well.
Having said that, I’m in my 30s and my first suicide attempt was when I was 14. Being a teenager was the worst. Nothing made sense, you were treated both like an adult and a child depending on what best suited other people’s needs. You were trapped and underdeveloped, understanding and experiencing shifts in life but simultaneously powerless. Not saying my twenties were good or thirties are great but they were definitely better than my teen years. So it doesn’t surprise me at all
