People who say Hans Zimmer is a hack have no, absolutely NO idea what they're talking about. It's so ironic how people attack Hans for re-using the same stuff, while actually, he's one of the most innovative forces in film scoring out there.
god this is so amazing i really wish i had more words to describe this feeling you get when you watch the movie and listen to the film score.. The arrangement at 1:45 is so CRAZY i swear
Ah, I love both the soundtracks to The Dark Knight and Inception. Both are two of my favourite soundtracks. The Dark Knight OST has got this really really moody creepy atmosphere and Inception has one of the most overwhelming soundtracks I've ever heard.
@dudedicus You're talking about the percussive bassy dronings characteristic to the soundtrack, such as in the last half of dream is collapsing? Those are trombones. It is meant to sound kind of like a slowed-down version of the trumpets from the beginning of Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien, the song played in the movie to warn of a coming kick.
Raznor winning that oscar was basically just a flat-out travesty. So, SO many people could write a score like that, but oh no, he formed a popular band so now it's cool and hip that he goes into film scoring. On the contrary, there's not a single other composer that does what Zimmer does (and I'm not just talking about composition, I'm talking about real vision with regarding to sound design, production and fusion of acoustic and electronic instruments). And in 2013 Zimmer was neglected again.
Can i try and add something here? I don't adore the Oscars any more than most out here. But, any award for music score goes to the best application of music in a film. I think both the quality of music and the way it enhances the story is taken into account, among lots of other factors while making a judgement. Maybe TSN just got ahead by a little with all of that. Although the Inception score may sound more grand and melodic, TSN score was a brilliant experimentation with electronic music.
Did anyone notice, that in the first pic, the totem is on the D note? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the note the booming horns play in "Half-Remembered Dream"?
@gemmarealmilka Raznor's main theme for The Social Network was far from a "new type of soundtrack". They copied Hans Zimmer's "Melanchromy" from his Weather Man score almost 1:1. Please get your facts straight....
I'd rather listen to the Social Network score, which is actually nuanced, than Inception, which is often times just an unsubtle, blaring wall of noise.
@HollywoodZeitgeist you;ve messed with the wrong person- as a musician and musicologist I have to ask you to get your facts straight. precomposed material was a base for new great compositions multiple times in the whole history of western music. just usage of a melody doesn't make it 'old type'. I can reassure you- you wouldn't notice the difference, if Nolan picked eg. Badelt (or several others) to compose here instead. elaborate orchestration, yes. new and fresh- NO.
this music is plain boring. same stuff zimmer does every time. raznor and atticus did such an amazing and new type of soundtrack. well deserved oscar for them.
how the fuck no oscar for this mind blowing piece of art????

love this film and the music!!!
WOW!!! That is one MONSTER machine!!! Working with all those technologies he can get!!!
This men is music genius of our time.
'Inception' is the best film of the 2000s and a fine beginning to a new era of films that are amazing both technically as well as emotionally.

Don't Hate, Create !

how does this man do it!
@Clogged14 Should've put Ramin Djawadi and Clint Mansell in there as well.

2:11 awesome guitar tune
@gemmarealmilka That was plain boring and cheese. THIS is bombastic and powerful, genious work!
Your comment on guitars in orchestra.
Interesting 👍🙄
it's like.. Musiception!
Did anyone notice, that in the first pic, the totem is on the D note? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the note the booming horns play in "Half-Remembered Dream"?
@Art4261 I do! I prefer a symphonic score, like JOHN WILLIAMS. :D But if I did want guitar and orchestra, Zimmer is the only one who can pull it off!
Okay, please show me your award winning, internationally, critically acclaimed orchestra pieces. None? I thought so. :)
@gemmarealmilka You said Raznor did a new type of soundtrack. All I want to know is, what's "new" about the Social Network score?
So basically, you agree with HollywoodZeltgeist that Raznor pretty much copied Hans' tone in Melanchromy.
@gemmarealmilka Raznor's main theme for The Social Network was far from a "new type of soundtrack". They copied Hans Zimmer's "Melanchromy" from his Weather Man score almost 1:1.
Please get your facts straight....
1. John Williams
2. Danny Elfman
3. Hans Zimmer
4. Thomas Newman
5. Howard Shore
Everyone else's works... who are they again?
some1 have a link to the picture from 0:00 till 0:05?
need it as a wallpaper
@gemmarealmilka boring NO... doing HIS thing... YES...
I stopped taking the oscars seriously after I saw that you didn't win....
@gemmarealmilka what are you actually saying? lol dude. the dream is collapsing? or paradox? come on.
I'd rather listen to the Social Network score, which is actually nuanced, than Inception, which is often times just an unsubtle, blaring wall of noise.
@xcitric That's crap. I couldnt even belief it.
I mean, is that music?

@Art4261 grow up
HE doesn't orchestrate. :P
A classically trained orchestrator does that part of the work.
this music is plain boring. same stuff zimmer does every time. raznor and atticus did such an amazing and new type of soundtrack. well deserved oscar for them.
Dumb comment. You're not a musicologist, obviously.
