You can run “tests” till the cows come home, but the real world is where the rubber meets the road. If the fellow from Ingersoll is so proud of his product, one would think he would show greater interest in understanding/resolving the problem. Then again, maybe he already knows the marketing department got creative with the specs! Great videos!
Ingersoll has gone downhill, we bought a new mobile air setup for a 40lb jack hammer and the hammer fell apart within the first 2 hours of use. Both bolts unscrewed themselves completely then the air compressor began to have issues where the countdown for glow plugs was short and it would crank no start til the battery died. You had no way of holding the plugs a little longer like an 04 model with a key where you could override a shutdown. We fixed the manifold on the older model and left the new model with our superintendent. Let's just say the office was pissed we hated it.
Man I always enjoy your brand of honesty, tell it like it is Brother, you're preaching to the choir. Oh, and the content of your videos is pretty dang good too!
The Engineer from Ingersoll should have said, unless I missed it, hey that switch is bad so and so will be contacting you today about us making that right. Then they could have had that one back for testing and given you a new one. We all know there isn't much of a chance that that is ever going to happen... Nothing beats real world testing. Maybe Harbor Freight will want to sponsor you. Keep up the good work!
hi Jeff. H/D mech here, in my 30+yrs exp, air will always win every time. I've also found as you probably know, inch gun with long anvil won't have the same grunt as a short one. Thanks for the video and good luck puttin the ol girl back together. God Bless
IR's Winnegar probably sits in an "Office Space" like cubicle, and doesn't have the authority to bring any expenses to the IR company. He probably as team leader stacked the design papers up in a neat stack, but has probably never worked on himself a fastener bigger than what you find on a swing set or bicycle. Your test was right on. As a shade tree mechanic have a small made in USA IR air compressor. Thanks for providing the information.
Just an idea... Next time hook a chain hoist or a come - along to the crane cable. You will know the rest. Soon the D9 will be pay her own share. Nice job 👍
Jeff you know all you need is JB weld to fix the threads 😂😂😂. I figured I'd get that in there before another armchair mechanic in kindergarten did 😂😂. Great job on the video and showing the truth always leaves hurt butt's. Hope you get your bolts and taps soon so you can be done with that part of the repair.
You are a very talented guy 👍 I don't know how you put up with the " know it all folks " . Especially about the impact deal. Love you're channel ❤ have nothing but respect for everything you do. Pat from northwest WI
When you threw out that bottom roller bolt, I was sure you were going to find a hole that had been reworked where a regular bolt wouldn't fit all the way down. I'm glad that I was wrong.
I knew you were addicted to "Picking Things Up, And Putting Them Down" when you bought the 336. Now look at yourself, you got a Crane, and you just can't stop...🤣

I’m glad I never sold my old IR air drive 1” impact and try and replace it with battery power. And I agree it’s convenient with no air hoses to stretch out. But if you have to anyway.
Thx Jeff,I do enjoy your time spent and your honesty! Don’t listen to the BS ers there a dime a dozen and as long as they don’t have to look you in the face they’ll say just about anything as long as they don’t have to back it up

This was probably 10 years ago and he was using an earthquake 1/2" drive impact and he was unable to remove the lugnuts with the gun. He then took the jack handle and placed it over a breaker bar for leverage and the snap-on breaker bar broke before the lugnuts. I walked over to his air compressor and it was shutting off at 125 psi so I removed the cover from the pressure switch and adjusted it to shut off at 150 psi and he was then able to easily remove the lugnuts with the impact. So after coming to the conclusion that more is better when it comes to air pressure and impact guns I decided to see how much is better. I decided to increase pressure 50 psi at a time as I tried to tighten or break varying sized bolts. The test subject was a brand new earthquake impact that top of the line at the time and air pressure was supplied from a composite wound high pressure gas cylinder and it was filled with 6000 psi of compressed air. After 200 psi I decided against holding the impact by hand so I hose clamped a piece of angle iron to the handle of the impact and I used a length of 1\16" steel cable to activate the trigger at a distance of 8 feet. I made a loop around the trigger and used a pulley mounted to the angle iron to change the direction of pull. Torque output noticeably increased each time the pressure was increased by 50 psi. The highest pressure I achieved through the impact was 450 psi and the impact exploded after 2-3 seconds of operation. My regulator was rated for a maximum regulated output pressure of 2000 psi and It would be a pleasure to test pneumatic impacts up at 2000 psi.
@@Jpaydirt What model Ingersoll Rand impact do you have? I have the 9691 which is rated at 3000 ft lb of nut busting torque and only 2200 ft lb of tightening torque. When I was deciding on which w9000 series impact to purchase I was comparing the w9491 with the w9691 and I was trying to figure out why the w9461 only had 2600 ft lb of nut busting torque and the only real difference is the 6" extended anvil. My guess is that the added weight of having the 6" extended anvil aids in breaking loose fasteners.
If you are anything like me, I bet you figured out the quickest and easiest way to grind those snap rings down right around the time you got down to two left to do. Maybe the front will fall off of that Ingersol and they will tell you to take it outside the environment, that seems to be where his conversation went. thanks for the videos, Jeff.
Enjoyed the video as always Jeff. You would think that dude from Ingersoll would have jumped all over the trigger issue, and asked questions about the problem if he was so proud of that impact that he supposedly engineered or whatever. Most of those guys like that are full of it. The guy you called about the roller problem didn't seem to waste any time with an answer. Goes to show the night/day difference about somebody who knows something, and somebody who just is just a condescending a-hole that's only about image projection, and nothing else. I tried to help out with the rollers Jeff, but my arms weren't long enough! You should have gotten Mr. Griffy to run the crane for ya. 🐶I'm sure he would take a 🦴as wages.
I bet ingersol wishes you Never bought that impact gun. “ oh dam the trigger is sticking again, it does that”😂 calming saying it like it was designed to have that problem 😂 excellent video as always, thank you
Good for you Jeff doing your own test with the IR. People like their stats but you're right, if it doesn't work then it doesn't work. 👍. What a pain with those snap rings, you might as well just cast your own friggin rollers from scratch next time.
I say if they claim that itll put out 2400 and it doesn’t do it then stand up for yourself and scream from the mountain top. And if they won’t stand by their product then out them on every avenue you have including court. Don’t let ingersol ram rod you
Would love to have a couple of those worn bottom rollers for our d9g, I have one with bad bearings and can't find a used one anywhere and a new one would never last if put under there with all those worn ones. That is a hell of a job for you to do alone. Be careful out there by yourself!
For putting bigger bolts in the rock guards you could possibly get 12 point headed bolts for a smaller socket size or socket head. If they were 1” bolts to start with running a 25mm drill in there might be challenging as it’s going to be pretty close to hole size. Good luck Jeff will win
You are right, torque is torque, from the first bolt, that battery is not at 100% capacity. So your torque numbers change. Batteries operated tools are convenient. They don’t require as much support. But if you have a big job, better bring the air, or AC electric.
my gosh, back in the day we always used to run a three-quarter line right out of the compressor tank with a ball valve dumped about an ounce of oil down the air gun and hope for the best. The difference between a good day and a bad day was a bolt coming out. Milwaukee’s the same thing they always got some kind of gremlin lurking in them. They all circuit boards. You don’t know what they’re gonna do makes you pissed all that money.

Awesome video. I wonder if you took some kind of wire brush, big enough to fit in the holes attached to a drill. Clean them out and see if that helps before you commit to re threading them.
We run Milwaukee at my job. If you change a Cat 24M cutting edge with a one inch electric the edge comes loose in a 12 hour shift. If you hammer the same edge on with a one inch air gun they stay tight. Electric is handy with no cord but some jobs I think air hits harder and tightens more. The torque on the cutting edge is only 800 ft lbs but if we torque them it’s guaranteed to fall off.
I worked on a 46A that was wobbling in the Ocean and the roller frame bolts were never taken out. We used a 21 ft. Pipe to break the bolts loose, but broke all 56 bolts off and used a magnetic drill press to drill out the bolts and had a welder blow out the rest and chiseled out the rest to the threads. What a mess and then used never seize on all the bolts when we put it back together.
If I lived nearby I'd come and give you a hand in return I'd just want you to let me do a decent pass when you were operating it, I'd love to have a go on a old school D9
Enjoying your rebuild videos Jeff. You do a lot of work by yourself and I appreciate the effort and energy it takes to get these jobs done by yourself. Have to tear into my D7e before to long. I have a final drive that’s lost some teeth. Think it’s coming from the reduction gear but haven’t torn anything apart yet. I don’t have the tools so may have to call in some help for this one unless I pull the sprocket and cover off as a unit and assess from there. Curious if you have used any of the aftermarket final drive parts. Costex(CTP) is substantially cheaper then cat. I have decent luck with their stuff in the past but you’re always wondering if it’s a mistake when you put the order in.
Regarding your bolt repair, did you consider allen head bolts to avoid the too big of head inside the guard structure? Cannot understand why Ingersol didn't want the gun back for eval...sounded kind of high and mighty to me....thanks
You can always take your bigger bolts to someone with a surface grinder and they can grind smaller hexs on the head if you need the clearence. I've done it myself before.
Rigg a chain hoist from the hook of the Crain instead of that lifting chain. then you can position the load then lower it into place with the chain hoist.
If your ever in that situation again trying to put something down wile in a crane....get some barn twine and run it to the cab and you can pull on either side to adjust them wile your letting them down.
Hi Jeff. If the clips are only needed for assembly why can’t you start the bolts, take off the clips and then wind the bolts in the rest of the way maybe, or is there too mush play on the bolts?
25:56 TTC has capability to test both directions. I have not watched in a while but I know they have tested left hand before. Just a matter of changing the bolt. Think they were using 1" hardware. Not sure how common a left hand threaded nut and bolt combo are. One think I learned from TTC is the time it takes. Peak torque frequently takes 15 or more seconds. That's a lot longer than most of us hammer on something.
On your air guns put a little bit of air gun oil before and after you use them them things will last for ever I was told that by a master mechanic I work for . Never had any problems with my air guns , just regular air gun oil , little bit goes a long way
How hard would it be to add a shaft and levers on the front of the Galion that had push pull rods thru the front and connect to the original levers? Use pins and clips so it could be removed if not needed. Just to keep from climbing in and out to make small adjustments.
Hey up mate when you said of needing help was wondering why you were using the lovely Gallion rather than you remote control service truck good to see that you switched over later, also why not change those clips did kody not surgest that, anyway another good video thanks and good luck with that fool from inger/rand
yeah but ...... Jeff , it was cloudy day , and it's supposed to be sunny warm 89 degrees with no wind ! on the third tuesday of May ! LOL Love the internet keyboard experts
Jeff, at 39:57, look at the bolt to the right of your wrist. It doesnt appear to be bottomed. That might be the one that didnt turn iwth the Harbor Fright. It might be hydrolocked meaning that theres too damn much antiseize in there keeping the bolt from tightening. If i were you, i'd take that bolt out, clean it and the hole.

Be cheeper/easier in a mill
Jeff, put a chain fall on the crane hook for fine adjustments.
I've found the aerosol never sieze works well and is much quicker and neater to use.
Rigg a chain hoist from the hook of the Crain instead of that lifting chain. then you can position the load then lower it into place with the chain hoist.
Jeff Wins Great vid 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🍺🍺
Next project: remote control for the Galion? PS, gonna need a bigger tub of anti-seize.
If your ever in that situation again trying to put something down wile in a crane....get some barn twine and run it to the cab and you can pull on either side to adjust them wile your letting them down.
Kody sounds like a REAL real businessman.
Mr Griffey is building up a strategy to claim that fluffy wind guard on your remote microphone. Be careful where you set it down Jeff 😂
Mr Paydirt, that battery powered tool was not full power because it was cold out . Lol got to make a comment. Great video. 👍
Id get new bolts to go with the new rollers . Have you tried KOPER kote antiseize.
Would be interesting to do a breakaway torque test on the bolts after tightening them with the Ingersoll...
On your air guns put a little bit of air gun oil before and after you use them them things will last for ever I was told that by a master mechanic I work for . Never had any problems with my air guns , just regular air gun oil , little bit goes a long way
you got to love people Jeff
beast= engineer talk for im on a different planet. engineers are on a whole different end of the factory nowadays .. if not a whole different adress.
Looking good, Jeff, are you gonna paint the under carriage, love the content. Keep up the great content. 🍻
Brother the one near the idler wheel is suppose to be single not double. And love your videos they r always awesome!!!!
We r fixing always as one single two double then one single two double again and in the last again single
Not on a d9, 🤷♂️
@@Jpaydirti have 9g and 9h but we always put like that. Cuz the say not to put double roller near idler
Could a remote control be installed in this crane? That up and down into that cab gets old fast.
How hard would it be to add a shaft and levers on the front of the Galion that had push pull rods thru the front and connect to the original levers? Use pins and clips so it could be removed if not needed. Just to keep from climbing in and out to make small adjustments.
Sounds like Project Farm needs to do some testing on the big impacts!
Of course you watch that clown.
Hey Jeff,
You should contact the guy on Torque Test and see if he wants to test it. maybe he would even fix it for you 🙂
Clearly you don't know what you are talking about....
Very interesting! They all are. IR needs to send you a new gun. Good night
Made by a different company 😂
You could weld a smaller nut to the bolt head hex.
Hey up mate when you said of needing help was wondering why you were using the lovely Gallion rather than you remote control service truck good to see that you switched over later, also why not change those clips did kody not surgest that, anyway another good video thanks and good luck with that fool from inger/rand
i think theres quite a difference on the impact frequency between the air and electric
Great test on the IR compared to HOBO just think if you had a HOBO air compressor you would hav stripped all them bolts LOL !!
Jeff have you looked into cats 1” torque multiplier ran off a hydraulic power pack
yeah but ...... Jeff , it was cloudy day , and it's supposed to be sunny warm 89 degrees with no wind ! on the third tuesday of May ! LOL Love the internet keyboard experts
Hi My Friend Very Good Job i Like ❤❤❤❤❤
Jeff, do you think dmc ever installed a set of rollers or did they backwards engineer it and just thought a regular snap ring would work?
I'm wondering if newer stuff has them, so they thought old ones can use them
Jeff, at 39:57, look at the bolt to the right of your wrist. It doesnt appear to be bottomed. That might be the one that didnt turn iwth the Harbor Fright. It might be hydrolocked meaning that theres too damn much antiseize in there keeping the bolt from tightening. If i were you, i'd take that bolt out, clean it and the hole.
I see what you are looking at, I'll take another look at it, the holes are open so I doubt it's hydro locked
45lb vevor gun just heavier hammers inside?
Can you fit a remote control to the crane? It would make working alone much easier.
