The finesse funker shows the wide variety of sounds she can get with just five pedals and a wah that never goes off.
Reverb addict Mark Speer and badass bassist Laura Lee met with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger before their ultra-hip, sold-out show at Nashville’s Basement East. Speer and Lee took the crew through their non-conventional approach to nuevo-vintage tones.

Wow, this chick and her boyfriend make really cool music, she has a tendency to play the same exact thing for about eight minutes straight during a song. Definitely stoner music
Thanks for featuring Laura Lee. Her band is way ahead and hopefully at the right time. I'm astonished how much I feel wonderful listening to Khruangbin's music and live shows. They play and share some deep feelings and wonderful music.
12 years ago, we had a party at my house, and this(?) band played in our livingroom. The bassist was very memorable. Fast forward, this girl and this band is everywhere!
damn that rules
That is far and away the most upright acoustic bass sounding, electric rig!! Incredible
Eerily so! That's an amazing tone.
The foam in the bridge really helps with this. 0:51
"i have had the same strings since I bought the bass" amen, lady. Amen.
That's the beauty of flatwounds. They sound better with age
My roundwounds are so old they play like flats. Hope I never break one!
Eww
Its okay you can buy new strings.
New strings are awesome
Love how her attitude fits the whole Khruangbin aesthetic. Very refreshing interview.
It’s an older video, but it checks out.
Shhhhhh...@@zen7349
I understand that reference lol
@@zen7349 how is knowledge about gear ever a neccesity when you play in a great band, like she does?
Nobody in that band seems to be gear obsessed.
@@versnellingspookieHow is it not? ☮️
I'm happy to see artists that keep on using more affordable gears even after they got big, such as Laura with her SX here. It helps destroy this stigma that you NEED high-end gear if you want to make it big.
If a brand endorses you, then they’ll ask you to use your own signature model, or at least they’ll send you their high end stuff. Looking at you cory wong ! :)
And brands are for posers, not players. Working the casinos of Las Vegas, I used what worked.
She now has a real deal Fender bass
@@MarcusSandoval-kx2th NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
@@AhmadIlyas1994 yep 👍 😊 she's sponsored 🎸
You know...she's SUPER NICE as a player...her lines are SO melodic! She doesn't go crazy but everything she plays is perfect!
Ye one of the best. That reggae approach. Hold the groove and add lovely bits where needed.
Good on her for sticking with the SX.
Gotta appreciate a gal who knows good SX when she has it! ;)
shes got a fender now :)
She does have gold or brass plated Fender Jazz now.
Holy crap i've never really heard her playing isolated like this; her tone is fantastic.
It sounds a lot like an upright bass
her tone is fantastic is equal to she's playing a jazz bass in fender bass man with nothing more
@@enricoandrini4453 old flats and foam too...
I love that the whole band's ethos is exploring within the box. And that goes all the way down to the gear they use too!
she has the tastiest sense of note placement and rhythym. never too much always just what the song needs.
Very subtle euphemism, thank you.
man this approach is one to live by. keep things simple, make the magic happen on your instrument. she rocking the same SX knockoff she started with, did some clutch upgrade to the pickups and tuning pegs. compressor is a must if you play live and a solid amp. done.
man i dig her tone. and she seems like she has a great personality.
I love how the focus is on looking cool. She’s an entertainer. And she does look super cool.
That part made me like her less
It's just a little extra flare... their unique sound makes them special.
@@2chows1dude its a joke
when would she ever need to play bridge pickup with khruangbin?
I love her playing, great tone and feel, she always plays really good parts that fit the songs perfectly....bravo Laura!
I love the fact that she uses an SX. I've had one exactly the same. I've had a bunch of vintage and recent Fenders afterwards, and this SX sounded much better than a lot of them. It was a cheap bass by all means, but the sound was amazing. So I love it that she just sticks with this, while she probably could have about any bass she wants.
Just talked to Matt at Rockin Robin and verified that they are NOT closing. Thank God! 4:39
I was going to ask the same thing
This was done 6 years ago.
Finally an Interview with Laura!!!❤
It's an older song, but the first thing I heard from them that sold me on her tone was "Maria También" from Con Todo El Mundo. (thanks, KEXP!). Sounds awesome.
Those Sx's are great basses!!! That one is the older version, alder body!
Refreshing to see a vid going into detail on a topic without unnecessary background music, choppy editing, or lame effects. Thanks!
I have the same SX bass. It was about $90 brand new on eBay in the mid-2000s.
Remember ebay being around, but never knew of people actually buying with good results
She rules, and love that she's not snobby about an SX bass
That’s Mark sitting in the booth behind them incognito. His rig rundown is hilarious. Be great to interview Laid Back Country Picker and Honey in an up and coming rig rundown.
Laura Lee's playing here made me think of the classic upright bassists, like Ron Carter, Paul Chambers, and, more recently, Christian McBride. So wonderful!
Great interview with Laura Lee. Love Kruangbin. Love how all three of them keep things pretty basic in terms of gear but get so much out of it to make their own unique sound.
Had been listening to a lot of Khruangbin lately. Perfect content!
I have a lot of new found respect for Laura she has a great attitude and understanding of how she should play....... continued success to her and the rest of Khruangbin
Thank you YT algos for randomly finding this band for me. I dig their sound and she is sultry as heck when she plays. I find her appealing to look at especially when she is so into her songs.
Khruangbin are a trip. Great sound.
Wow, it really does sound like an upright bass
It's helpful to hear her say the name of the band. I could never be sure.
@5:15
For reals 😂
It means "airplane" in Thai.
The tone of that bass in the mix is so good!😊
I’ve been gigging a Bassman Ten for years on bass. Very underrated. Just drop a mic in front of it and let the PA do the heavy lifting. Ultimate in tone and dynamic response.
Laura is fucking amazing! I love that she doesn't change her strings, mine are going on 30 years & I dread the day that anything happens.
Less is more, great rundown…shows that her tone is mainly in the fingers kudos to you
It's very rare to see Laura (who played with a pick 12 years ago) with other basses than her SX JB (and the Greco Violin). But you can find some fotos with a Precision Bass and she plays a Fender Bass VI in the "Khruangbin & Leon Bridges - B-Side"-Video.
Time for an update! She's been sporting a Fender Jazz stack knob in recent posts.
Great interview! Rockin’ Robin here in Houston is not closing, though. I think they’ve been looking for a buyer for a few years-Bart, the owner, would like to retire.
I own a SX Telecaster as my only electric guitar, is pretty cool.
Bummer we misssd you in Berkley this tour. Coolest kids on the block. A sound like no others.
Think Mark Speer is the most underrated guitar in music today
Love that she plays an SX. Pickups and strings make the biggest different to a guitars tone
Mark Speer said tell me what instrument speaks to you out of about 80 he had in his music room and she grabbed that bass right away!
This just shows that you can be so creative with simple resources…
4 strings and the truth! Laura is a great player and very cool
cool. I left the same set of rotosounds on my P bass for 28 yrs.
You are a beautiful bass player I love your style
Most charming bass player in the milkeway for sure!.
Love Kruangbin
Wait wt? She plays an SX! I effin love it!
I love this woman. I love this bands style of music
She plays super groovy, love her style ❤
Wig Rundown?
Wonder what they look like without the wigs.
LOL yes!
It’s like the whole KISS makeup mystery. @@tonepilot
@@tedstryker7965 Indeed there are some things that should never be known.
There bald
She’s fantastic
Laura Lee is THE BEST in every way
Her bass sound rocks.
Great player, great singer, great band!
We need a new video with her new Fender custom shop J bass!
Queen of The Dip...
Watching LO playing is like a Flowing Stream of Sexy Notes
Yes! Never Change Bass String Users unite! 🤘
Hell yeah. I’m on 16 year old strings on my bass. 😂
I play too hard, I guess. One of mine always eventually breaks 😞
Mine are 8 years old.
@@jamisondonald384You’re breaking flatwounds? Wow, you’re really tearing it up.
@@estebanb7166 I actually don't think I ever broke my flat ones, just the rounds. The flat ones fell prey to a "prank" by a guy that broke the nut of the bass they were on and I haven't had a set since, but your comment makes me think maybe I should go back to them
My minimal bass rig is an Alpha Omicron into a fender 40. That’s all I need these days……have a compressor and a pog but they’re off the board.
I love that she plays an SX bass. No hype, just great music and tone.
Love Laura! Minimalist monstress of bass!
Those Bassman 10’s are great guitar amps.
Amazing bass player 🎉
Today I learned
Flats: Bwoomp
Rounds: Bingy
And great transparent pedal.
Love her. Keeping it simple.
Ok, we love you. We're in. You don't HAVE to wear the wig all the time!!
Nice set up.
Very cool Chic, Mesmerizing to watch play their music would not be the same without her
Love my SX J-bass! 🔥 👌
Man, when Laura demonstrates a few sounds.. pfewww..blown away man ...totally blown away.
At 5:15 she pronounces the name of the band. Now I know.
SX do good stuff. Great bases (pun intended) for upgraded P/ups and hardware.
I first heard their tune on Pandora on my Etran De L'Aïr African playlist . Never knew they were Texan until this year. Weirded me out
She is so kool !
My art teacher said the same thing to me “you gotta know the rules before you break the rules”…
Wow. I still have the parts to an SX guitar that was only $100 ~12 years ago. I bought two and kept the better one. The wood in those guitars could be really crappy, but a good one sounds like any good Fender. The saddles where chrome-plated bass, but it sounded very good and the frets just needed some polishing. The stock Ceramic pickups were even good. The hardware was a bit flimsy, and it has those cheap pots. Upgrading everything would make it pretty nice, but I've invested in guitar parts with better quality woods, and Stainless frets for longevity.
very interesting
Oh my gosh she plays an SX bass (what??) and eight year-old strings?? I am done with excuses.
"Roundwounds are so binky" couldn't be explained weirder or better.
Her tone sounds almost like an electrified Upright, has a little bit of Cleveland Eaton to it
Are we just gonna ignore that she has not changed the strings in 8 years.
Can’t ignore her sound though.
Todo en ella enamora.
I thought I was the only one who used the big triangle picks!
To me the SX headstock looks more like a Greco J bass... anyway doesn't matter her playing is so sublime... gotta love the old strings for the "Dub" sound.
P.s. she is one of the most in the pocket bass players to come out in such a long time.
I have the feeling she doesn't care that much about gear, which is cool and I wished I was the same way. I spend too much time looking and buying new gear rather than just playing.
i had never heard of them before. checked it out and survey says: Rad
What gage strings does she use? That tone sounds so good
Less is always more. Classic jazz tone from the 50's and 60's.
I remember seeing SX basses on Talkbass more than a decade back, and they were ridiculously cheap and good. A few mods and you'd have a decent bass.
same strings for 8 years? Wow, that's crazy.
8 year old strings, now I feel a little bit better xP
She said these strings are 8 years old? Interesting. It's especially interesting considering that in Russia, due to the dollar exchange rate, strings are significantly expensive.
A band leaders dream for a bass player.
Musicians use all sorts of interesting adjectives to describe tone. This is the first time I've heard someone describe their tone as "peanut butter."
Really cool .....Thanks !!!!!!!!
She sold me those pick up covers. I may be wrong, but.... didn't she change bass at some point of time? On various videos, I saw two and three pot guitars. Is that just an electronic upgrade or the whole of the instrument? By the way, SX guitars are very, very good, and it's very reasonable to buy some of them. Lots of quality for... nickles.
She has a new Fender custom shop for the most recent tour that I’m dying to hear more about.
timothy olyphant is asking the right questions here.
