    I genuinely love the epic size of the levels, the interconnectivity of the worlds & even the backtracking. It's a whimsically dark game. The level designs themselves really hit the right notes for me, they scratch an itch that I rarely feel in other games.

    You're the only person I've seen mention the improved roll animation. That's one of the things I noticed that I felt not many people did... Also the backpack having its own physics, the replaced standing-b press attack, and the Mumbo redesign. Fantastic video. Very satisfying for the Banjo nerd!

    Liked the video. Some random notes: 1) You can grab jiggies with clock work eggs. This means you can bypass a few puzzles / platforming sections. 2) you can fight lord wufakfak as a submarine (imo the sub controls better and has infinite ammo).
    Grunty industry is probably my favorite level because I really felt like I was breaking into the place. I have a feeling its a matter of taste - I have a thing for navigation puzzles and some of my favorite games are Majora's Mask, Dark Souls, etc....

    Part of me wishes that there was a hack of Banjo-Tooie, where all the cut content (like a more fully-fleshed out Cauldron Keep as Cauldron Castle-complete with a Teleportation Room for Fast-Travel was realized, fixed framerate issues, and maybe a minimap were handy). I’d call it “Banjo-Kazooie-Tooie”!
    This is what perplexes me: Sonic & Knuckles came out 6 years prior to Banjo-Tooie. So, with the revision in the N64 hardware, why didn’t they make Banjo-Tooie a lock-on cartridge where you can access the Stop N’ Swop from Banjo-Kazooie, and Donkey-Kong 64?
    Any other N64 game would tske you to a similar type “No Way” screen; but if you have Goldeneye plugged in, you’d play the ZX Spectrum games with their proper sfx added in.
    Banjo-Tooie means a lot to me; I played this A LOT when I was a kid; I sunk in so many hours into this game, and without it, and it’s backtracking, it wouldn’t have helped warm me up to the Metroid series, and its exploratory gameplay!

    • @jiggylookback
      @jiggylookback  4 місяці тому +1

      Agreed! I adored exploring all the time in Tooie and would spend endless hours doing that as a kid. I love the idea of a Sega tower of power style thing, that’d be sick!

    Fun Fact!
    If you think WitchyWorld plays a lot like Banjo Kazooie, that's because it was originally meant for Banjo Kazooie! The stage was removed either due to restraints or pacing, but it would be added to Banjo Tooie as the introduction to the Split Up Pads.
    This explains why Witchy World is a more reserved stage that's smaller in size compared to the rest. Banjo Kazooie stages were medium sized with plenty of content that encouraged exploration, while Banjo Tooie promoted wider-sized worlds with interconnectivity to encourage exploring instead.

    Great video! Always good to see some Banjo love in the 2020s!
    Just a few things I wanted to add after watching the entire thing:
    Terry is a man. :( He is a single father! Zombie Jingaling even has a line stating that Terry's wife recently left him and all he has now are the kids.
    I don't know if you did it on purpose to show us how annoying those drones in Grunty Industries are, but you could just destroy the camera with eggs and they'd stop spawning for a while. Could have made the scene with the toilet conversation more convenient.
    And lastly it's random which skullhouse Mingy Jongo resides in. But you can always tell them apart after entering, because Mumbo doesn't sleep and has a Minjo at the entrance while Mingy has a Jinjo and sleeps.
    P.S. Grunty Industries is currently (and since 2000) my most favourite 3d platformer level of all time!

    • @jiggylookback
      @jiggylookback  4 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching. That’s so funny you say that
      I was confused because I thought he was a man…but eggs and babies really confused me. Thanks for clearing that up.
      Not sure as this was a while ago, but I did know about the cameras so idk why I didn’t. I very well could have had that intention.
      But wait Mingy spawns randomly each playthrough? I guess it’s a 50/50 shot but I felt like my last two play through he was in the blue one.
      That’s a cool tidbit!

    To answer your question about why frame dips and lower framerates in general dont matter as much on old games, simple
    Low res. The transition between frames is less jarring because of the blur

    • @jiggylookback
      @jiggylookback  Місяць тому +1

      I’m sure that helps! I actually read somewhere that Rare in particular would calculate where the frame dips were happening and speed up the game. Sounds bizarre but that’s why cut scenes had to be reworked in the Xbox re releases because the audio and everything would get out of sync because the framerate was better in that version.
      Wild stuff!

    You mentioned Banjo's shadow, a core memory I have is when I was playing at my grandparents, my late grandfather thought it was funny that this "video game" had shadows and was impressed by Banjo having one. As far as I know he had never played a video game before or after.

      @@jiggylookback wow I just watched that segment of the video. It's kinda funny that the reasons you don't like the level, make the top tier for me. I absolutely love the complexity of navigation and trying to keep a mental map of what goes where. You have to keep track of the battery locations, how to get into different sections with different forms, the rabbit locations, and this is extremely fun to me. There's also so much variety and I love the music/theme. It feels like an oppressive mechanical labyrinth that really forces you into thinking about the entire layout. It's like if a metroidvania game was a singular level. Also not to mention the incredible boss. Then again, I'm the type of person that has the 3ds Ocarina of Time Water Temple as their second favorite dungeon in that game, so maybe I'm the only person who loves navigational challenges.

    Only now UA-cam recommended me this video. This game was a big title that I got alongside Majoras Mask and it may be an unpopular opinion but I loved the complex interconnective design of the games world. I'd usually play BK and BT to scratch different itches. Tooie was just that big exploration focussed game while BK was straight forward. I needed to check the comments to see if anybody had already said that, but found nothing. Did that for the other things you got incorrect and saw somebody had already informed you about those.

      It has been corrected actually but yes. I did in fact know this but sometimes when writing it just happens that way and I make mistakes then I record and don’t realize what I did.

    Ugh, Canary Mary.. a black mark on what is otherwise an /incredible/ game I still think fondly of to this day. Good grief. I was always afraid of getting carpal tunnel as a result of it, too.
    Long time ago, and even more recently on those rare occasions I get into some nostalgic mood, sometimes I'll have a save game that I'll leave on 89 Jiggies and 1 Cheato Page left, just because I wasn't in the mood to deal with Mary, until I finally psych myself up and mentally prepare for it. Yes, it's this bad.
    That said, there is a trick that does make it vastly easier. You may still not win 100% of the time, but this trick will increase the odds to 33% or even 50%. And at 50%, you'd have overall odds of winning at least once over 3 attempts, 87.5% of the time. 4 attempts? 93.75% chance you'll win at least once. The best part? You don't have to be superhuman. Are you ready? Here it is..
    Understand a rubberband mechanic is used. You see this with Mario Kart 64, but you can almost swear it's worse with Mary. So here's what you do...
    Repeatedly press A... /slowly/, maybe just enough to keep up with Mary, not pass. You'll have to go through the course once, to deliberately lose. That's when you'll find out at which point, you're about 85%, 90%, or 95% of the way through. When you figure this out, *that* is when you start mashing the A button like crazy, fast as you can! The rubberband mechanic takes time to react, and is not instant. The trick is to cross the finish line during this reaction window. And that... that is how you win!
    If you start mashing like crazy from the get-go, the rubberband mechanic will kick in, and Mary will travel at an insane rate of speed. Not only would it require superhuman ability to theoretically mash the button as fast as possible, I'm not even sure if the spring in the button can bounce back fast enough, even if you could do this.

    Isn't this just a go-trough rather than a retrospective? Cause from my understanding a retrospective covers what the game did right and/or wrong next to other games from the game's era and tries to link those aspects to modern games nowadays

      I see what you’re saying. My video is somewhere between a let’s play and a true retrospective. Which is kind of what I was going for to be different. I wanted to look at everything as I played. A few things in defense of myself.
      One: This is an older video I was still figuring things out. My pacing now is a lot better. My videos are also way more condensed.
