Blackadder has always been my favorite Rowan Atkinson character, so I am thrilled that you reacted to it! The writing and the acting in the entire show's run are top notch. I wish more people would react to this show, so I hope to see you react to more episodes. It was a blast watching you laugh and have fun with this! I thank you on behalf of Blackadder fans everywhere!
Blackadder is one of the greatest comedy series in history and a massive part of the childhood of many of us Gen Xers living in British commonwealth countries. I was a teenager in the 80s and grew up on the show. Watch every season from the start.
I was once made to take part in a company team building thing where an overpaid consultant made us go through silly games. One game was to make up a name for the voice in our head that tells us we aren't good enough etc and then we had to reveal the name to the others in the room and tell the voice to shut up. I'd zoned out of this tedious nonsense so when it was my turn I just blurted out "Bob" and said it just like Rowan Atkinson did. Everyone recognised it as being from Blackadder and several people in the room, including the consultant, nodded at me like I'd been very profound. I was so happy when that company went out of business.
Rowan actually has a slight speech impediment. Any words beginning with either 'b' or 'p' triggers his stutter, and the easiest way for him to get around this is to emphasize those words.
The whole idea with them not recognising that Kate is actually a boy is a play on Shakespeare's plays, and how characters don't recognise people they know because their wearing a mask, etc.
Such a brilliant cast - and a guest appearance by Rik Mayall too. You'll definitely enjoy these, as others have said Series 1 is a different type of humour to the rest as the combination of writers was different.
The funny thing about the series is that his character always schemes and plots to become powerful, but every iteration he is born farther and farther away from it. In the first he is the son of the king, the second series he is a minor lord, the third he is servant to a lord and in the fourth he is an lower officer in the Army.
Then you have him as "Scrooge" in a "Blackadder Christmas story" or something like it, where he can see his future. That is also a great Special episode.
Series 1 has a post-credit scene in each episode, Series 2 has different lyrics during the end credits of every episode, Series 3 has the most conventional end credit sequence (except with some archaic spelling) and Series 4 only takes an unconventional approach to the role of end credits in the very last episode.
Well, Series 3's end credits are in the style of a Regency playbill and Series 4's are mostly in the style of WWI archive footage with the credits listed as military names and ranks, so they're both pretty unconventional too.
More of that please. Classic British historic comedy. Tony Robinson, now Sir Tony was the host of "time Team", a show where a group of archeologists travel the land digging up sites of amazing interest. He was knighted for his comtribution to archeology. Ps, all the guys fancied Bob. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
Series 1 is set in the Middle Ages and while not as funny as later series definitely has its moments. Series 2 as you see is set in the first Elizabethan era; #3 was set during the Regency and #4 set during WW1. There were also a few longer episodes that were classed as specials that are also well worth a look.
😄 "Blackadder's Christmas Carol" is top notch! Watch it every x-mas, and it never fails. From 1988, but it is a timeless classic. BA is so aristocratically arrogant and horrible, it's totally hilarious.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this but a interesting fact: Rowan Atkinson actually as a stutter/stammer and finds it hard to pronounce words starting with the letter B. So the writer's named the female character pretending to be a man Bob because they found the way Rowan said it would get laughs. If you notice he pauses everytime he says Bob as he has to concentrate before saying it. Bob returns with the same actress in Blackadder Goes Forth for an episode.
Blackadder blows Mr. Bean out of the water on very many levels. Glad you enjoyed an episode of one of the best British comedy series that has ever been made.
It doesn't really matter that you accidently skipped the first season. Each season takes place in a different time period with Rowan playing a different Blackadder. Plus, season 1 is very different from what the show became from season 2 onward, so most people agree that while season 1 is worth watching, season 2 is the best place to start.
Series 1 & 2 are really good but 3 & 4 are outstanding! Also the one off Xmas special is gold! Possibly the best episode of all is in Series 3 with Robbie Coltrane playing Dr. Samuel Johnson having completed the 1st edition of the Dictionary......priceless!
Your smile is so infectious! 😊 Rowan Atkinson is originally from my town, he's been an absolute master of his trade. So nice to see you enjoying all these shows xx
The creator of Blackadder lately created another series (in a similar spirit to blackadder i think, at least i think it's the closest I've ever found) about the life of Shakespeare, there is a cameo of Bob/Kate there too
This series has my favourite performance from Hugh Laurie in it. I don't know if you have had a chance or not but Red Dwarf is some great British comedy as well.
Each series of Black Adder was set in a different era, so the first was during a (non-existent) Richard the IV rule, the second, Elizabethan, the third Georgian, the fourth WWI, all with a Black Adder and a Baldrick, and many of the same actors playing the other characters.
Enjoyed the review and may you do many more! It was stated that you never seen a young Rowan Atkinsson. May I then recommend one of the first things I saw him in, back in early 80's in a very special and unique show of its time called: "Not The Nine O'Clock News" ?
Have a look at Baldrick explaining how the First world war started . And a character called the Prince Regent in a earlier episode . You may well know him from something a little different in the US.
Series 2 is actually the best place to jump in really. Series 1 is a bit naff really. Each Series exists in its own bubble as they are set in different time periods: Series 1 is set in the medieval period, Series 2 (the best imo) is set in the Tudors, Series 3 is the Georgian times and Series 4 (2nd best) is set in World War 1.
I liked series 1 but it has a different premise with Baldrick being the clever one and Black adder the idiot. The infanta episode with Miraim Margoyles and Jim Broadbent, aka Professors Sprout and Slughorn from Harry Potter, is hilarious.
@speleokeir Ehhh... sorry, don't like it. Apart from the final scene where Edmund dies which a nice homage to Brian Blessed's death scene in "I, Claudeus".
Ignore the naysayers, series one isn't really naff as I've seen said in a previous comment. Its a bit different before it set into an ongoing style but the history and the characters are right up there with the following 3 series.
I always find that in season 1, the character of blackadder is closer to Mr. Bean than any other season and i was already familiar with that series, maybe that's why i perfect the other seasons
Don't bother with season 1, it wasn't right luckly the whole thing wasn't scrapped as it is amazing and unforgetable. The Georgien season is followed by WW1, the very last few mins will blow your mind. The whole country was talking about it for weeks, it is flimed perfectly and you will never forget how it ends. Black Adder was and is one of the best comey programs ever made in the whole world, there is not one dud episode, do enjoy.
Black Adder, Mr. Bean, Faulty Towers, Benny Hill, Monty Python .... The Brits had some of the best comedy in the world back in the day. I was a huge fan of Monty Python, bought the TV show scripts and memorized many of the lines. Try the following skits: Argument, Biggus Dickus, The Black Knight, Lumberjack Song, Twit Olympics. It helps if you know Shakespeare. Women dressing as men, men dressing as women, and the audience’s willing suspension of disbelief that the protagonist isn’t aware of the cross-dressing, is a classic theme of Shakespeare, British farce, and pantomimes for that matter. Don’t think too hard about the fact that we all know she’s a woman and is obviously so. We just go along with the pretence that it’s good enough to fool Blackadder.
It's a crying shame that Mr Bean is pretty much the only thing North Americans know of Atkinson. His "Welcome to Hell" is one of the funniest quick sketches ever. I first ran across him in "Not the Nine O'Clock News". He was hilarious in that, and has never disappointed since.
