    1. Get your hydroquinone from a board certified dermatologist.
    2. The ideal formula would be a product that contains hydroquinone and Tretinoin.
    3. Avoid halo hypopigmentation by applying vaseline or aquaphor around the dark spot before you apply the hydroquinone.
    4. Use a Q-tip when applying hydroquinone, avoid getting it on your hands and in your mucous membranes.
    5. Avoid rebound hyperpigmentation by using hydroquinone for three months and then taking a break for 3 months. During your break period, use different tyrosinase inhibitors.
    6. Use sunscreen
    7. 4% hydroquinone is the gold standard. "More is not better."

There’s this company called Pretty Biznez that’s been around for some years now. Now, I’ve had prescription hydroquinone in the past, but I can honestly say this company’s products are pretty dang close to my hydroquinone experience. I’ve tried a lot of dark spot products and I would definitely recommend them over all. There is oil in the products but it didn’t break out my combo skin. I think my only gripe is making sure to shake well before applications. The owner used it to drastically change her skin tone 😩 but I find it awesome for hyperpigmentation.

    Hey Dr.Hani,
I am from India . I recently came across your youtube channel when I was searching to get rid of hyperpigmentation . And your’s was the best one I watched. I have been using skin whitening creams for 2 years now to get rid of pigmentation in my face but it worked initially and the skin was clear . Now the pigmentation is slowly coming back in addition to that I have melasma in my cheeks. I don’t no what to do. I want to stop using the cream but I’m afraid that it would worsen the pigmentation in my face despite knowing it is bad . Hope u would help me

The halo hypopigmentation is what happened when I used prescription hydroquinone drops on acne scars in my 20’s. I stopped and haven’t used it since. My skin pigment came back. I also used Retin-A cream to treat acne but stopped because I got horrible persistent acne and more scars. I was seeing a dermatologist at the time…. I later got an acid peel to take care of these issues. That was about 35 years ago.

There are some misconceptions of the usage of hydroquinone- I was prescribed by my dermatologist a compound that consist of Hydroquinone 8%, tret0.025%, Kojic acid 6%, and Fluoc 0.01% cream. He advised me to use it over my entire face. He also says to use it for 6 months on and then 6 months off. I'm worried about these compounds and how to use it. The strength of the hydroquinone 8% worries me. I've been using it for about a week, but I think I may use it every other day because of the strength. I will probably do what you suggest and use it on the dark spots only but there are a few dermatologists that say to use it over your entire face. This is what confuses me.

I finally had my dermatology appointment for hyperpigmentation (small patch left cheek and a thin line top lip) and was prescribed 4% Hydroquinone (does not include Tretinoin however). She, not being a woman of color, I thank you as I was armed with enough info from your videos to ask the right questions and understood the medical terminology she used along the way. She also instructed the 3 months on/3 months off regimen and a sunscreen. Do you recommend any particular sunscreen? Would it also "help" to add a sunshade to my driver's side window since that is the main area affected (left cheek)? Thanks again!!

    • @VoteforHani

It's very disappointing that in your two videos on hydroquinone, you fail to mention the severe damage to the thyroid gland that can be caused by the chemical. I know two women who used illegal hydroquinone creams for many years, one beginning in her teens (the toiletries were purchased from under the counter at "beauty" shops in South London).
The older of the two women developed a goitre which necessitated her thyroid gland to be removed. She is now dependent on medication to replicate the function of her missing thyroid. The other woman also developed a goitre but was reluctant to undergo surgery (and the subsequent need for medication) because she was pursuing fertility treatments. Her goitre continued to grow and now impacts her trachea, meaning that surgery must take place very soon, followed by life-long medication as a replacement for the hormones that will be missing.
The link between hydroquinone and thyroid dysfunction is well documented; a brief search on Google yielded this paper, which might be of interest to you: Owolabi, J. O., Fabiyi, O. S., Adelakin, L. A., & Ekwerike, M. C. (2020). _Effects of Skin Lightening Cream Agents - Hydroquinone and Kojic Acid, on the Skin of Adult Female Experimental Rats._ Clinical, cosmetic and investigational dermatology, 13, 283-289. doi.org/10.2147/CCID.S233185.
It's surprising that you do not make any mention of thyroid dysfunction in either of your hydroquinone videos.
