I found that you can buy abandoned project cars for a decent price with lots of great parts on them. I was able to get a b body with a rebuilt 440 out of the car, disc brake conversion, new 4:10 gears and lots more for $3k. I needed a lot of that for a car I’m restoring and I still have a very clean rolling chassis I can do something with or sell.

I paid $2700 in real 1972 dollars for a basic Dodge Demon. 318 3/spd. I traded in my 67 GTX Conv w 440 Super Commando. I don’t think I could afford either one now days. Glad I kept the Dodge. Well done teacher. I have a few degrees as well. One is in psychology that also plays a factor in how and what people buy as well as what they see and you touched on that with the auctions. Those auctions do effect the ceiling on what people think a restored car is worth but all markets fluctuate b bodies is a prime example. Fnf movies excited the market when they see a blown charger so people want one. Your teaching here is spot on. I have many parts i buy used and refurbish them like outboards and mercury mostly because the demand is high.1963 Evinrude 75hp is worth 600 restored but a 1963 100hp merc brings 2500 plus. So i live what your saying. Mopars is no different. Runs and drives 63 dodge vs a 68 charger is a big difference. Thus your comment on the bee. But if the bee runs and drives value goes up fast. Marketing a product also may affect demand but if it cant be suppied people will go for used and that market tanks then price goes up hurting the seller. I used a great deal of new and used parts and used is because i cant get new as you also mentioned. I am going to take a moment to thank you my friend for the teaching you have done. So thanks for teaching kids and even 63yr old ones like me😂 i might even teach you a thing or two😂 we all learn together brother.
Not sure how anybody could argue that there isn’t a Mopar Tax on much of what we need to purchase. Makes perfect sense to me and I think nearly all of us have felt it.
Another factor is that many aftermarket manufactures are nowadays owned by investment groups. They are there to turn max profit for their shareholders- not to turn out highest quality parts (cam & lifter issues), or parts for lower production vehicles/engines (Mopar, BOP, AMC)

This is pretty simple too understand.. I have been paying the Mopar tax all my life... Even more in the 90s and up.. Cause mopar went bankrupt. In the 80s and they destroyed a lot of molds aka scrapped... body parts are sky high... While at the same time Ford and Chevy kept producing so less money chasing an abundance of parts cheaper prices... While Mopar being rarer to find and not as big interest in mopar the thanks to the Chevy Ford push of popularity planned that way... Makes lot of dollars chasing few parts price goes up... Not to mention of its super rare!... So yes the Mopar tax is alive and well and still growing by the second... And by the way if the EV crowd get there way there will be a Ford and Chevy tax coming along shortly.😮
Oh man this is a bad idea but here goes anyways. What really kills us is the big block deal from the 1970's bail out. Part of the availability side of things here. Ford and Chev can spit out old big blocks day in and day out but we Mopar guys will never see a new casting again... what we have in our world now is all there is. That really ups the development costs. Go through a junkyard and buy a 302 or 350 for 25$ then do a ton of R&D on it cheaply... flip over to a mopar and those costs are going to add a digit or two. A great example of what I am talking about and what you made this video on is the Harrop R&D video for a 454 in Australia. They just do NOT get this stuff down there so they cannot simply throw any old engine on the scan box and start development. They probably have less than a score of 440 blocks in their whole country ffs.
Excellent tutorial, Joe. In 1975 I bought a 4:10 Dana rear end out of a crashed Charger for $125 from the local salvage yard. It was the only thing that survived a massive hit. I wonder what that Dana is worth today.
Early 90s Truckin magazine feature on used truck's from Cal trans.. then unwanted 67-76? Forgive me if I'm off on build years, then no aftermarket parts, but as usual Chevy Lego system made it easier to lower etc, now the Box Dodge truck I always liked and still do.. everything was fabricated to achieve similar look.. I don't even know if they actually have parts now for them.. 😂.. still want one

Great video, in Germany it's still difficult to get used Mopar parts at affordable prices and the aftermarket is usually the same. I paid €608 for my Edelbrock RPM Intake, which is about $650.
The “mopar tax” is real. I’m into early A-body mopars. They are probably the least popular, yet prices for them have followed the upward trend. Makes it more difficult to participate in this hobby.

I had to pay $469 for a performer RPM from summit... double what a chevy one costs.. same amount of material, same amount of machining (small block).. literally double the cost. so yes... i believe in the tax. And on top of it, Edelbrock drilled all the mounting holes .180 too far forward and told me oh well... no idea when we will have more... (still making me mad.... hate companies that don't stand behind their stuff)

You can get a whole Chevy setup (cam,roller lifters,and the roller rocker)for what it costs to get just the roller lifters for a la mopar. I don’t understand why it’s that expensive. Trust me I completely respect and understand your thoughts.. even when I was at O'Reilly's.. with my discount.. Recipe found in old school Mopar book, for 318.. use the stock 360 cam, Heads cleaned up, 318 one I mean, have Shop install 1.88 intake valves, that cam was as low as 70 bucks for a while.. even our mini starter hack.. was 50to60 now since someone found out it's 88plus.. It's a love for these.. nothing else makes sense
A lot of people don't understand how economics can be affected, buy graphs that,are doctored, like where you perform a,questionnaire is performed, to get results for the graphs, eg average wages,are lower in low income area's as a posed to where lawyers and judge's living area's, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Love your show. Up here in Canada the only way to find anything cheap is by watching the classifieds daily. I picked up a 383 Yorker for 100 Canadian but it took 6 months of waiting to catch a deal. In perspective, remember that since we voted in a socialist government our dollar is 65% of American and we're taxed to death.

Well as it is said, how much is it worth, what the Market will pay or Bare. In the last 30 years Mopars and parts have been moving up. I remember when they weren't worth much. There is so much interest in Mopars now, people want to jump in and participate in the ownership of the cars. Only so many cars and or parts to go around. Supply side economics is antiquated and seems to be a$$ backwards. The way I was taught way back was that supply precedes demand. To my simple mind I thought it was smarter to have demand first before building a supply of the demanded good. In the old days the auto industry just kind of guesstimated how many cars to build and built them(not including special orders) and put them on lots called sales banks. Sometimes they made too many "Edsels" that sat around for years before being sold. My economics "professor" never injected price into the mix. That said you're explanation makes perfect sense. I remember back in the 1970's, the hot rod industry said the most popular engine to hot rod was the small block Chevy and the second most popular engine for hot rodding parts was the big block Mopar. I remember we were pulling big block Mopars out of station wagons and Chryslers. Even Mopar performance cars were cheaper than big block Chevy cars.
I've been a Mopar guy since the day my brother brought his 66 Dodge Coronet home and put a 413 in it I seen prices go for nothing 2 astronomical prices but a Mopar guy I am no matter what the price is😊
I can also like BigMike definitely attest to the higher costs associated with Mopars! I am one of them lower-income individuals and need to save every cent I can. Don't get me wrong people I will not buy/use an inferior product to use on my ride just to save a buck. What im saying is it just means I will have to save up for the good part but it will take me like 3 times longer than most people will have to do before I can buy what I need. Just reality, small block Chevys have been the biggest segment of the hot market for years. (flat head Ford was probably the leader prior to that) More new parts sold for them, more potential used parts, lower prices in both the new and used market. Doesn't matter that the raw materials to make an intake or piston are especially the same for any engine. The cost of production is always lower on the most produced and easiest sold items. Development costs are also offset faster on anything thats sold at a higher rate faster. The fact these companies make most of their money on Chevy parts is a big reason Mopar parts are as cheap as they are.
Several years ago Jeg's had new LS Chevy blocks listed for $299. I can get a Mopar 426 Hemi block for $6,000 plus $600 sales tax. There is the Mopar tax.
Adjustable roller tip rocker arms are a great example of the Mopar Tax. SBC guys can run Harland Sharpes even though they don't NEED them because they're affordable and pretty. Harland Sharpe rocker Arms for big and small block Mopars? Yowzer! Make sure your credit card limit is adequate!!!!!!!!!!
I called b.s. on the pickers when they paid $400 for a p.o.s. BSA motorcycle gas tank. I had a customer trying to get me to buy his for that amount. I showed him, I had 3 NOS ones on the shelf at $150.00 each. He went off mad. When I emailed pickers about it, they said it was for TV entertainment. That doesn't help the market.
It definitely makes sense. The same lesson aplies to the housing crisis where I live, however it is like you said, a false cieling. And this is due to investors buying up homes and leaving them empty. How our local government is dealing with it is correct however, they are building massive low income housing projects. Supply and demand.

As far as personal experience goes, I've found that distance comes into play too, at least on big items. The best deals are almost always 1000 + miles away. Time too has a bearing. I am an early to bed early to rise guy. The best deals are snagged up while I'm asleep. The Early bird no longer catches the worm.. but I'd still rather eat worms than drive a Chevy!

What hurt was there were no rear wheel drive cars built in the '80's. Everything Chrysler did was put into the fwd cars. The 318 and 360 were just dump in to trucks and vans, with no proformace factory upgrades.
I know there’s some clicks of people who love the volares and then the diplomat/dynasty people. I know the K car had a huge impact. Some argue that it helped saved Chrysler.

The thing that justifies the expense for me, is having something more uncommon than a Camaro or a Mustang! I get a lot of interest when I drive my 67 Dart. I don’t enjoy paying more for parts, but it’s better than the cost of vintage BMW parts…ask me how I know!
Good lesson in economics. We always complained about mopar stuff costing more even way back in the 1970s. But we paid the premium because we were rebels. For any given product the chevy was the cheapest, then ford, then mopar. Always has been always will be. That's also why people are dropping LS engines in everything. Cheap horsepower.
I know you’re right Mr. Joe. I have a Plymouth and an Oldsmobile. I think Oldsmobile parts are (taxed) even higher than Mopar parts, but both are definitely are getting hit 👍🇺🇸
Great video, Joe, very informative. Yes all of us with Mopar definitely have paid this tax for sure. I do not have a high income by all means, I am allowed “husband allowance“ to go to swap meets and on Christmas or my birthday. I can order something from a catalog for my Dodge around $500 to 1000. I’ve been doing this for almost 10 years and have really upgraded my car. I like to go to swap meets, here in Denver. They are this time of year and they are wonderful. It’s good to have an idea of what you want before you go so that you’re not buying junk, however, I’ve done that too. Lol.
Price is reflective of demand vs production/warehouse/transport cost vs supply. If there were more of a demand for mopar parts production/warehouse/transport cost would be offset by demand. It’s only going to get worse. In manufacturing suppliers only make to order. If a company/warehouse had more sales they’d order more and we’d pay less. But we don’t pay less, and that’s why we’re better 🤣
I'm kinda thinking that the boys over at Chevrolet got together and used their brain power and started after market parts for the engines that they designed. Chevrolet has a very interesting history. The thing that I liked about Chevrolet is engine swaps were simple. Big block and small block fit the same transmission and the same motor mounts. But when you see a stock big 4 door New Yorker blow the doors off of a formula 400 fire bird you know who has the better engines. I've owned every engine size and I liked them all even my gas guzzling V10.
If you go back to the start of the Small block Chevy even the bb Chevy had help in the Aftermarket. Chevy pushed there parts through the Aftermarket sooner than Dodge did. The reason I know this is a few people that I knew worked on cars in the in the 60s. Dodge didn’t get a good aftermarket support till the late 60s. Chevy got a good 10 years in after mart support. I agree about the amount of Chevy vs mopar is another valve point. Somewhere in the 90s early 2000s mopars in being popular. It’s flat line now. Value of a car or truck I’ve seen some pos but they want 7500 bucks. Hey craziest one I saw online a 69 Dodge Charger no floor no grill no trunk half the tail lights wiring missing 10,000 no trans no engine. Heart breaking Dodge Ramcharger fresh 360 sold for 1500. 5000 sold for 5grand. I learned a lesson about family don’t trust them. My cousin was supposed to offer it back to me at the same price
We as hot rodders need to do more swapping and horse trading for these parts. Keep the costs of our hobby down! Everyone thinks that their stuff is gold these days.
you also have to look at manufacturing processes yes it takes roughly the same amount of money in material to produce both chevy and mopar intakes they know they are going to sell more chevy so the machines can run longer without wasted setup time say it takes an hour to set up a machine to make any intake well that hour is better spent on a longer run so the price can be less for the longer run.
A lot of truth there Joe, I was around in the days before the "auction frenzy" took hold. A friend of mine bought a 426 Hemi, complete engine, for $1200, it needed machine work, but it was a complete motor. The mind set back then was different, Superbee's Chargers, Roadrunners were cheap, they were just another old car, but parts prices have always been more expensive than say, a small block Chevy part, really, anything was more expensive that a Small block Chevy, like you said, it's the economics of it.

I’ve paid most of my life Mopar tax I lived in Oshawa on Canada back in the late 70s or 80s I had always a Mopar back then Oshawa is a General Motors town the amount of Chevy parts compared to Mopar was redicilas back then I remember buying racing products for my 70 roadrunner like a racing pressure plate was 5 times more than a Chevy back in the 80s but now days Mopar are more popular than they were in the 70s or 80s you can’t afford a A body anymore I don’t know but always Mopar was more money than a Chevy or ford at least in Toronto area prob living in a gm town made it worse

I understand the ideology. The sad news is that the government regulations has forced US companies to outsource many manufacturing processes to other countries in order to meet the EPA requirements of pollution. Countries like China and Taiwan are very lax in comparison on were they dump waste and how they treat the environment. The majority of aftermarket heads, cranks, rods are produced over seas. We may finish the products here, but they are already doing the dirty work.
Yes i agree with your mopar tax been fighting it for 50 years but things have got way out of hand in the last ten years went to the street rod nationals in Louisville last year set up to sell all mopar stuff priced everything to sell not to get rich made over 1000 dollars just unloading my truck to other venders who doubled the price and put the parts in their booth some sold some didn't a lot has to do with people are getting gready and like you said someone sees acar on meecome for 80000 and everyone wants that for something pulled out of the woods my favorite intake were the trantulas tm6 tm7 always performed well on my builds years ago thanks for the crash course in economics never paid much attention to that in high school great job
@JustMoparJoe I didn't want to Rain on the topic, but you nailed the Reasoning...Supply/Demand. It's sad that FABO has 90k members...and is small in comparison to most Mustang/Camaro/Corvette forums. It is what it is., and short of an 426 Hemi R/T, GTX, Super Bee, or 440 car....most Mopars are slow, Lo-Performance factory stock /6 or 318 cars.

As someone who has had to source a single plane W2 intake manifold, I was able to find several examples despite most not being made for several years, yet most of these guys wanted $650-$800 and I refused to pay the mopar hate tax in that regard. A lot of them were for sale for months as well, probably because a lot of guys try and hold out for absolute top dollar. Eventually I did find what was looking for, for much, much less, but it was a project
I am sure you’re aware. There are many less parts, aftermarket, available for the RB block. Wish I can still buy tunnel ram, blowers or other items Chevy guys can buy for theirs. Maybe one day. Now I see why guys in my area are just swapping to an LS motor
Mopar parts are definitely more expensive. But I think we are going to see a jump in price across the board as less and less people are building the older stuff and ls and Hemi swaps are becoming more popular and affordable.
Oh it exists and it gets worse I think being Canadian we notice it worse cause we got all these different taxes then most parts come from us so the Canadian dollar changed into us if u are on a budget it’s very hard and Covid has made it even worse my wife died 2 years ago so I’m 65 single on a pension but the time u pay your rent and grocery’s your broke I don’t drink booze so that saves a little try renting a apt here it’s crazy a room people are paying over a thousand for a room so now Thers rent cities in most cities in Canada you never seen that much till Covid pop ed up so everybody put price up to regain what they lost during Covid but now they just keep letting it get higher and higher it was bad enough before it’s crazy now so you have to reuse to market place or eBay or china I don’t like buying Chinese but no choice Mopar are more money for pretty much everything you need what makes Mopar heads more than a Chevy ther basically do the same thing the same sizes so to me that’s a Mopar tax for loving a brand that a head is a head the companies spend the same money for each head I would think so why Mopar be more don’t make sense to me
I think in most cases there is defiantly a MOPAR tax when compared to Chevy. The small block and big block Chevy were produced in far greater numbers than Mopar big block and small blocks, so their supply is much larger which drives the price down. Also, since there is more of them, the aftermarket has primarily focused on them. This has given Chevy guys a better product at a cheaper price. Companies can set up their tooling for chevys to produce thousands of products, which consumes most of their time. Then, they have to retool for Mopar or ford to produce a thousand. Since there is less for Mopars the demand is increased. Since they sell more Chevy stuff, more R&D is spent on Chevy products. This is why Chevy gets a better product. Here’s a few examples. How many Chrysler cams are ground on a Chevy core with a slower ramp rate due to Chevys smaller lifters. Look at trick flow and Edelbrock’s head options for Mopar compared to Chevy. The Chevy heads outflow the Mopar every time. That’s because more R&D was invested into Chevy. Yes, I understand the W8 and W9 heads are fantastic, but look at what you pay for them because the demand isn’t there. Indy and Brodix also make great heads. Once again a high cost due to lack of demand. Unfortunately, the supply and demand aspects will never change. Supply will always be low which will drive the prices up because Chevy is the aftermarket’s bread and butter. I scan ebay, Craigslist and marketplace looking for deals when I can get them to help offset the tax. However, I’ve been screwed over a few times, and when it comes to internal engine parts, and I’ll bite the bullet and buy new. I think hot rodding in general has become more difficult in today’s economy. It’s certainly more economical when you have a social network of fellow Mopar people who just want to see the name live on. Sometimes ya just gotta keep on keeping on.
That's why you find more people building Chevrolets than Mopar because of the price! My dad always called them the poor man ride😅 Mopar no car! difference!

So i live what your saying. Mopars is no different. Runs and drives 63 dodge vs a 68 charger is a big difference. Thus your comment on the bee. But if the bee runs and drives value goes up fast. Marketing a product also may affect demand but if it cant be suppied people will go for used and that market tanks then price goes up hurting the seller. I used a great deal of new and used parts and used is because i cant get new as you also mentioned. I am going to take a moment to thank you my friend for the teaching you have done. Another factor is that many aftermarket manufactures are nowadays owned by investment groups.
They are there to turn max profit for their shareholders- not to turn out highest quality parts (cam & lifter issues), or parts for lower production vehicles/engines (Mopar, BOP, AMC)

This is pretty simple too understand.. I have been paying the Mopar tax all my life... Even more in the 90s and up.. Cause mopar went bankrupt. In the 80s and they destroyed a lot of molds aka scrapped... body parts are sky high... While at the same time Ford and Chevy kept producing so less money chasing an abundance of parts cheaper prices... While Mopar being rarer to find and not as big interest in mopar the thanks to the Chevy Ford push of popularity planned that way... Makes lot of dollars chasing few parts price goes up... Not to mention of its super rare!... So yes the Mopar tax is alive and well and still growing by the second... And by the way if the EV crowd get there way there will be a Ford and Chevy tax coming along shortly.😮

Oh man this is a bad idea but here goes anyways. What really kills us is the big block deal from the 1970's bail out. Part of the availability side of things here. Ford and Chev can spit out old big blocks day in and day out but we Mopar guys will never see a new casting again... what we have in our world now is all there is. That really ups the development costs. Go through a junkyard and buy a 302 or 350 for 25$ then do a ton of R&D on it cheaply... flip over to a mopar and those costs are going to add a digit or two. A great example of what I am talking about and what you made this video on is the Harrop R&D video for a 454 in Australia. They just do NOT get this stuff down there so they cannot simply throw any old engine on the scan box and start development. They probably have less than a score of 440 blocks in their whole country ffs.

Forgive me if I'm off on build years, then no aftermarket parts, but as usual Chevy Lego system made it easier to lower etc, now the Box Dodge truck I always liked and still do.. everything was fabricated to achieve similar look.. I don't even know if they actually have parts now for them..

I had to pay $469 for a performer RPM from summit... double what a chevy one costs.. same amount of material, same amount of machining (small block).. literally double the cost. so yes... i believe in the tax. And on top of it, Edelbrock drilled all the mounting holes .180 too far forward and told me oh well... no idea when we will have more... (still making me mad.... hate companies that don't stand behind their stuff)

You can get a whole Chevy setup (cam,roller lifters,and the roller rocker)for what it costs to get just the roller lifters for a la mopar. I don’t understand why it’s that expensive. Hell look at a383 Chevy! I want to make a 396 318 mopar. The cost is insane. Why? How? Just gave up. Even to go stock.

Recipe found in old school Mopar book, for 318.. use the stock 360 cam, Heads cleaned up, 318 one I mean, have Shop install 1.88 intake valves, that cam was as low as 70 bucks for a while.. even our mini starter hack.. was 50to60 now since someone found out it's 88plus..

Love your show. Up here in Canada the only way to find anything cheap is by watching the classifieds daily. I picked up a 383 Yorker for 100 Canadian but it took 6 months of waiting to catch a deal. In perspective, remember that since we voted in a socialist government our dollar is 65% of American and we're taxed to death.

Supply side economics is antiquated and seems to be a$$ backwards. The way I was taught way back was that supply precedes demand. To my simple mind I thought it was smarter to have demand first before building a supply of the demanded good. In the old days the auto industry just kind of guesstimated how many cars to build and built them(not including special orders) and put them on lots called sales banks. Sometimes they made too many "Edsels" that sat around for years before being sold. My economics "professor" never injected price into the mix. That said you're explanation makes perfect sense. I remember back in the 1970's, the hot rod industry said the most popular engine to hot rod was the small block Chevy and the second most popular engine for hot rodding parts was the big block Mopar. I remember we were pulling big block Mopars out of station wagons and Chryslers. Even Mopar performance cars were cheaper than big block Chevy cars.

Just reality, small block Chevys have been the biggest segment of the hot market for years. (flat head Ford was probably the leader prior to that) More new parts sold for them, more potential used parts, lower prices in both the new and used market. Doesn't matter that the raw materials to make an intake or piston are especially the same for any engine. The cost of production is always lower on the most produced and easiest sold items. Development costs are also offset faster on anything thats sold at a higher rate faster.
The fact these companies make most of their money on Chevy parts is a big reason Mopar parts are as cheap as they are.

Several years ago Jeg's had new LS Chevy blocks listed for $299. I can get a Mopar 426 Hemi block for $6,000 plus $600 sales tax. There is the Mopar tax.

Adjustable roller tip rocker arms are a great example of the Mopar Tax. SBC guys can run Harland Sharpes even though they don't NEED them because they're affordable and pretty. Harland Sharpe rocker Arms for big and small block Mopars? Yowzer! Make sure your credit card limit is adequate!!!!!!!!!!

I called b.s. on the pickers when they paid $400 for a p.o.s. BSA motorcycle gas tank. I had a customer trying to get me to buy his for that amount. I showed him, I had 3 NOS ones on the shelf at $150.00 each. He went off mad. When I emailed pickers about it, they said it was for TV entertainment. That doesn't help the market.

It definitely makes sense. The same lesson aplies to the housing crisis where I live, however it is like you said, a false cieling. And this is due to investors buying up homes and leaving them empty. How our local government is dealing with it is correct however, they are building massive low income housing projects. Supply and demand.

As far as personal experience goes, I've found that distance comes into play too, at least on big items. The best deals are almost always 1000 + miles away.
Time too has a bearing. I am an early to bed early to rise guy. The best deals are snagged up while I'm asleep.

What hurt was there were no rear wheel drive cars built in the '80's. Everything Chrysler did was put into the fwd cars. The 318 and 360 were just dump in to trucks and vans, with no proformace factory upgrades.
I know there’s some clicks of people who love the volares and then the diplomat/dynasty people. I know the K car had a huge impact. Some argue that it helped saved Chrysler.

Good lesson in economics. We always complained about mopar stuff costing more even way back in the 1970s. But we paid the premium because we were rebels. For any given product the chevy was the cheapest, then ford, then mopar. Always has been always will be. That's also why people are dropping LS engines in everything. Cheap horsepower.

I do not have a high income by all means, I am allowed “husband allowance“ to go to swap meets and on Christmas or my birthday. I can order something from a catalog for my Dodge around $500 to 1000. I’ve been doing this for almost 10 years and have really upgraded my car. I like to go to swap meets, here in Denver. They are this time of year and they are wonderful. It’s good to have an idea of what you want before you go so that you’re not buying junk, however, I’ve done that too. Lol.

Price is reflective of demand vs production/warehouse/transport cost vs supply. If there were more of a demand for mopar parts production/warehouse/transport cost would be offset by demand. It’s only going to get worse. In manufacturing suppliers only make to order. If a company/warehouse had more sales they’d order more and we’d pay less.
But we don’t pay less, and that’s why we’re better 🤣

I'm kinda thinking that the boys over at Chevrolet got together and used their brain power and started after market parts for the engines that they designed. Chevrolet has a very interesting history.
The thing that I liked about Chevrolet is engine swaps were simple. Big block and small block fit the same transmission and the same motor mounts. But when you see a stock big 4 door New Yorker blow the doors off of a formula 400 fire bird you know who has the better engines. I've owned every engine size and I liked them all even my gas guzzling V10.

If you go back to the start of the Small block Chevy even the bb Chevy had help in the Aftermarket. Chevy pushed there parts through the Aftermarket sooner than Dodge did. The reason I know this is a few people that I knew worked on cars in the in the 60s. Dodge didn’t get a good aftermarket support till the late 60s. Chevy got a good 10 years in after mart support. I agree about the amount of Chevy vs mopar is another valve point. Somewhere in the 90s early 2000s mopars in being popular. It’s flat line now. Value of a car or truck I’ve seen some pos but they want 7500 bucks. Hey craziest one I saw online a 69 Dodge Charger no floor no grill no trunk half the tail lights wiring missing 10,000 no trans no engine. Heart breaking Dodge Ramcharger fresh 360 sold for 1500. 5000 sold for 5grand. I learned a lesson about family don’t trust them. My cousin was supposed to offer it back to me at the same price

We as hot rodders need to do more swapping and horse trading for these parts. Keep the costs of our hobby down! Everyone thinks that their stuff is gold these days.
That’s a great point. I was able to swap my rpm intake a few years back for a different one that I used on the dyno 400 tests.
you also have to look at manufacturing processes yes it takes roughly the same amount of money in material to produce both chevy and mopar intakes they know they are going to sell more chevy so the machines can run longer without wasted setup time say it takes an hour to set up a machine to make any intake well that hour is better spent on a longer run so the price can be less for the longer run.

A lot of truth there Joe, I was around in the days before the "auction frenzy" took hold. A friend of mine bought a 426 Hemi, complete engine, for $1200, it needed machine work, but it was a complete motor. The mind set back then was different, Superbee's Chargers, Roadrunners were cheap, they were just another old car, but parts prices have always been more expensive than say, a small block Chevy part, really, anything was more expensive that a Small block Chevy, like you said, it's the economics of it.

I’ve paid most of my life Mopar tax I lived in Oshawa on Canada back in the late 70s or 80s I had always a Mopar back then Oshawa is a General Motors town the amount of Chevy parts compared to Mopar was redicilas back then I remember buying racing products for my 70 roadrunner like a racing pressure plate was 5 times more than a Chevy back in the 80s but now days Mopar are more popular than they were in the 70s or 80s you can’t afford a A body anymore I don’t know but always Mopar was more money than a Chevy or ford at least in Toronto area prob living in a gm town made it worse

I understand the ideology. The sad news is that the government regulations has forced US companies to outsource many manufacturing processes to other countries in order to meet the EPA requirements of pollution. Countries like China and Taiwan are very lax in comparison on were they dump waste and how they treat the environment. The majority of aftermarket heads, cranks, rods are produced over seas. We may finish the products here, but they are already doing the dirty work.
Yes i agree with your mopar tax been fighting it for 50 years but things have got way out of hand in the last ten years went to the street rod nationals in Louisville last year set up to sell all mopar stuff priced everything to sell not to get rich made over 1000 dollars just unloading my truck to other venders who doubled the price and put the parts in their booth some sold some didn't a lot has to do with people are getting gready and like you said someone sees acar on meecome for 80000 and everyone wants that for something pulled out of the woods my favorite intake were the trantulas tm6 tm7 always performed well on my builds years ago thanks for the crash course in economics never paid much attention to that in high school great job

It is what it is., and short of an 426 Hemi R/T, GTX, Super Bee, or 440 car....most Mopars are slow, Lo-Performance factory stock /6 or 318 cars.
@@kpgsx even those cars are slow compared to today’s standards. That’s why I think it’s necessary to add the modern parts like aftermarket cylinder heads and camshaft designs.

As someone who has had to source a single plane W2 intake manifold, I was able to find several examples despite most not being made for several years, yet most of these guys wanted $650-$800 and I refused to pay the mopar hate tax in that regard. A lot of them were for sale for months as well, probably because a lot of guys try and hold out for absolute top dollar. Eventually I did find what was looking for, for much, much less, but it was a project

Mopar parts are definitely more expensive. But I think we are going to see a jump in price across the board as less and less people are building the older stuff and ls and Hemi swaps are becoming more popular and affordable.

Well done Joe. I've done two complete Mopar restorations and couldn't agree more with the "tax", and on average, it seems to be getting worse

Oh it exists and it gets worse I think being Canadian we notice it worse cause we got all these different taxes then most parts come from us so the Canadian dollar changed into us if u are on a budget it’s very hard and Covid has made it even worse my wife died 2 years ago so I’m 65 single on a pension but the time u pay your rent and grocery’s your broke I don’t drink booze so that saves a little try renting a apt here it’s crazy a room people are paying over a thousand for a room so now Thers rent cities in most cities in Canada you never seen that much till Covid pop ed up so everybody put price up to regain what they lost during Covid but now they just keep letting it get higher and higher it was bad enough before it’s crazy now so you have to reuse to market place or eBay or china I don’t like buying Chinese but no choice Mopar are more money for pretty much everything you need what makes Mopar heads more than a Chevy ther basically do the same thing the same sizes so to me that’s a Mopar tax for loving a brand that a head is a head the companies spend the same money for each head I would think so why Mopar be more don’t make sense to me
I think in most cases there is defiantly a MOPAR tax when compared to Chevy. The small block and big block Chevy were produced in far greater numbers than Mopar big block and small blocks, so their supply is much larger which drives the price down. Also, since there is more of them, the aftermarket has primarily focused on them. This has given Chevy guys a better product at a cheaper price. Companies can set up their tooling for chevys to produce thousands of products, which consumes most of their time. Then, they have to retool for Mopar or ford to produce a thousand. Since there is less for Mopars the demand is increased. Since they sell more Chevy stuff, more R&D is spent on Chevy products. This is why Chevy gets a better product. Here’s a few examples. How many Chrysler cams are ground on a Chevy core with a slower ramp rate due to Chevys smaller lifters. Look at trick flow and Edelbrock’s head options for Mopar compared to Chevy. The Chevy heads outflow the Mopar every time. That’s because more R&D was invested into Chevy. Yes, I understand the W8 and W9 heads are fantastic, but look at what you pay for them because the demand isn’t there. Indy and Brodix also make great heads. Once again a high cost due to lack of demand. Unfortunately, the supply and demand aspects will never change. Supply will always be low which will drive the prices up because Chevy is the aftermarket’s bread and butter. I scan ebay, Craigslist and marketplace looking for deals when I can get them to help offset the tax. However, I’ve been screwed over a few times, and when it comes to internal engine parts, and I’ll bite the bullet and buy new. I think hot rodding in general has become more difficult in today’s economy. It’s certainly more economical when you have a social network of fellow Mopar people who just want to see the name live on. Sometimes ya just gotta keep on keeping on.
