I was at El Mirage a few years ago as a spectator. It was a great time. We met a super nice guy who has a old escort or focus or something like that. He had an unusual name but I don't remember it unfortunately. He was a wild guy but told us lots of neat things. I went out exploring in the desert and to the north I found an old house site. It had a pool and some other neat stuff. I found something online long ago that said it was retreat for a family back in the 1940s or so. It had evidence of an old runway for an airplane. And of course I walked George's storage lot. the mayor of El Mirage. A lot of great cars in there. It's on the west side of the lake bed. I got some of the most beautiful sunset pictures there. A great time.

Awesome video!!! The trip in the Camaro is so BADASS!! El Mirage & Bonneville are on my bucket list, and I don’t have much of a bucket list. Thanks Dave!!!!!
Building a car then classing it rather than finding a class and building a car is something I've seen in every grassroots racing discipline I've been a part of
The algorithm brought me here, I am away from the car hobby for years now and this is the first time I hear your voice. I really enjoyed your car craft years. I remember one time in letters to the editors a subscriber wrote "why do we have to look at the sandal wearing hippie every month" and your response was "peace man peace"😂. I liked this video, take care, rock the flip flops 🤣.
Super fascinating video brother. And it's crazy how long you've been building a library to share with us!! Keep up with your instincts Dave, they're serving you well
I only went to, and spectated one meet out there in the mid 80's, saw a Camaro go 200, couldn't tell you who it was. And some guy landed an airplane during the meet right on the course thinking it was a fly in or something. I used to have a driveline shop in the valley and built many, many shafts for guys running out there. I also have a ton of dirtbike history with El Mirage starting back in the 60's riding with family and freinds. Miss those days.
From a hard core dirt track fan, this is a genre of racing I absolutely need to witness in person. Very cool. Different from what I am used to for sure. Thanks for sharing.
i love the safety bit that you explained. im part of the 24 Hours of Lemons, and we are SUPER hardcore on safety. proper certified cages, belts and straps that arent out of date, and they test each member of the race team in that "rapid exit" scenario, where they have to pop the belt and climb out of the car un-assisted in a certain amount of time. as a fully nationally sanctioned racing league, lemons has one of the lowest injury rates period vs ALL other leagues. and zero deaths in 16+ years of horrible cars on race tracks
Our car made a small cameo, you are right about running early, we aren’t part of a club and when we get to run it’s all corn rows, we spun that meet, great video for those that don’t know
Such a great spectrum of hot rodding and Americana in your channel, DF. The history behind El Mirage is so cool. Thanks again for cranking out these video gems. Keep ‘em coming…you’re absolutely nailing it dude!

Thanks for the breakdown. Grandpa told me stories of running out there in the 50's and 60s. Corky was a hellraiser back then.
... I fall into the "older guy crowd" - Mr. Freiburger - YOU ROCK, and we all roll - CHEERS!
Awesome video!!! The trip in the Camaro is so BADASS!! El Mirage & Bonneville are on my bucket list, and I don’t have much of a bucket list. Thanks Dave!!!!!
Building a car then classing it rather than finding a class and building a car is something I've seen in every grassroots racing discipline I've been a part of
I really do not understand how this guy doesn’t have a HUGE following
It’s coming?
The algorithm brought me here, I am away from the car hobby for years now and this is the first time I hear your voice. I really enjoyed your car craft years. I remember one time in letters to the editors a subscriber wrote "why do we have to look at the sandal wearing hippie every month" and your response was "peace man peace"😂. I liked this video, take care, rock the flip flops 🤣.
Wow, I vaguely remember that! I’m glad you caught back up with me, thank you.
My dad raced there in 1947 and 48 and was a member of the Oilers out of Carlsbad with Jim Nelson and Dode Martin.I was named after Jim Nelson.
I did not know the Dragmasters ran the lakes!
The cigar is a nice touch :D
I love the Freiburger history lessons. Thanks for these.
It is dirt. It will wash off. I Love Bonneville, been many times. The salt will not wash off. This is real go fast places. Enjoyed this.
Our car made a small cameo, you are right about running early, we aren’t part of a club and when we get to run it’s all corn rows, we spun that meet, great video for those that don’t know
Absolutely love this!!! Thank you for the history and explanation of all this!!!!
Really great video unlocking some inside stuff. Thanks for the look.
Such a great spectrum of hot rodding and Americana in your channel, DF. The history behind El Mirage is so cool. Thanks again for cranking out these video gems. Keep ‘em coming…you’re absolutely nailing it dude!
fantastic! love you sharing your knowledge with us
