  • We head to Beech Mountain, NC for a very limited annual event, Autumn at Oz, which takes place at a defunct theme park based on the Wizard of Oz called Land of Oz. Land of Oz was in business 1970 to 1980 and being able to experience the park with the Wizard of Oz being reenacted was amazing.

      He plays the scarecrow at the 3-day Midwest Wizard of Oz fest in Tinley Park, IL. He is part of a group called the "Spirit of Oz" which I believe the lion in your video is part of too, though his lion costume looks different.

    We went last year and it was nothing like it is this year! All that extra stuff outside the park definitely wasn't there. All they had was a small booth at the very end with a handful of souvenirs to choose from. We certainly didn't have to take a shuttle! Lol! I have a couple videos up of what it was like before it grew into this this year. I told them that it was neat enough that they should make it bigger. Thanks for showing what it's like now!

    Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video. It brought back so many magical memories of when I visited the original theme park in 1975 and 1976. I loved it so much and was so sad to hear they closed it. It would be so cool if they could re-open it so a new generation could enjoy it's magic. But I'm glad they do this annually. I definitely will go one year.

    Thanks so much for visiting and and filming this. I'd heard about this place for years, and I'm absolutely amazed and tickled that they have kept in in such good shape. (as much as they have put into it to keep it up I'm kinda surprised that this is only open one weekend/yr)
    Also, GREAT JOB on your intro and finale performances...you're a natural, Kyle!!!
    And a side note: Dorothy was excellent both in looks, singing, and acting, but do you think she has arm tattoos? I mean was it cold there? So why the flesh-tone long sleeves? I think it's cool since most artsy folks have ink (self included), I'm just a little OCD and notice details

    Ski lifts did not have balloons on them. The balloon ride was a circular ride that started in Emerald City and gave you an aerial view of the park. The ski lifts, pod-like gondolas, and busses took people to and from "Kansas." I went each summer for years.

    • @ethandavey7150
      @ethandavey7150 6 років тому

      Jarrell Dickey there are photos of the ski lifts with the balloons on them! Fake air balloons clearly but they are there. When did you go, maybe by that point they had taken the balloons off for some reason.

    • @andreafarris2515
      @andreafarris2515 5 років тому

      I went as a child too when the park was open. Jarrell is correct. The balloons were separate front the ski lifts. The balloons were more of a ride. There’s a website that I found once with lots of old pics. It was a great place to go as a kid! My family has some cool pics of us with Dorothy. Obviously the storm cellar is an updated bonus but I wish this would be a regular theme park again.

      The 1939 movie is based on the 1925 movie, which is based on the 1914 movie, which is based on the 1910 movie, which is based on the 1903 Broadway musical, which is based on the 1900 book. OZ has a complex history!

    • @bigred8432
      @bigred8432 6 років тому +2

      Nope. The 1939 movie is based on the book. The 1925 movie is based on the book. 1914 movie is based on the book. The movies have now tie to each other.
      The only vague link between any is that the 1939 movie used the idea of snow to break the poppies spell, which was an idea taken from the 1903 musical. That's all.

    • @CommunityGuidelines
      @CommunityGuidelines 6 років тому +2

      +Ian Smith That's hardly all! OZ adaptations build upon, and borrow elements from, their predecessors! All films incorporated elements from the 1903 musical--- not the least of which being Fred Stone's iconic portrayal of the Scarecrow, which even Ray Bolger cites as his inspiration. Dorothy's surname "Gale" is taken from the 1903 musical. The tornado special effects, a famous sequence of the 1903 musical and 1925 film, were developed to perfection in the 1939 film. When the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion disguise themselves as Winkies in the 1939 film, this hearkens back not to the book, but to the many disguises donned by the characters in the 1903 musical.
      Imogen the Cow, something of a substitute for Toto the Dog as Dorothy's animal sidekick, was first introduced in the 1903 musical, and then appeared in the 1910 film. The non-speaking, pantomime Cowardly Lion, who first appeared in the 1903 musical, also appeared in the 1910 and 1914 films.
      The plot element of farmhands transforming into Oz characters originated in the 1925 film, and indeed, the extended Kansas sequence of the 1939 film owes a debt to the 1925 film. The "magic tricks" performed by the Wizard in the 1925 film are taken directly from the 1903 stage show. Notably, the "it was all a dream" ending of the 1939 film can be traced back to the 1925 film.
      Interestingly, L. Frank Baum's (sadly lost) "Fairylogue & Radio Plays" multimedia show from 1908 featured each character on the page of a book in black and white, who then transformed into color when they stepped off the page. From black and white to full-color, hmm... where have we seen that motif before? :)
      Dorothy's age fluctuates in each subsequent production--- in the book and 1910 film, she is about 6; in the 1903 musical and 1925 film, she is about 18, to facilitate a love interest; as a direct result, the 1939 film compromises her age at 12, in-between childhood and adulthood.
      Of course, the fact that the 1939 film is a musical, and not a cartoon or a straight fantasy-adventure, was due to the success and fond public memory of the famous 1903 stage production (which ran professionally from 1902-1909, and then for many years later under amateur companies). After L. Frank Baum himself, we must thank Montgomery and Stone, whose wild and unforgettable antics as the Tin Woodman and Scarecrow in the 1903 musical kept OZ very much alive in the imagination of the American public for decades, paving the way for the MGM classic.
