Dave Hartley, just a note to let you know how much we, your fans, appreciate the legacy you've left here on these videos. If you're still monitoring thes comments, thank you for your music.
I watch this on youtube on my TV a lot & I love it. One of my favorites for watching David so gracefully work his way in & out of the notes blended so perfectly.
Excellent playing my friend !! Thank you so much for sharing these excellent videos. Your material is so instructive and inspiring all at the same time !!!
Hi David, your great skills in playing has inspired me to have another go at playing the steel, I've have had the Emmons guitar for over 29 years in it's case, however when I found your music on the tube got the guitar out and started practicing 6 months ago, after listing to your music which inspired me, I now can understand the guitar and how is meant to played, I cant play a number of the songs that you have on the tube, many thanks to your great playing which the best I have heard on a pedal steel guitar Many thanks for beautiful steeling playing, Ron Page Mount Isa QLD Australia
ronald page Hey Ronald, how did you go with picking it up again? Fresh Australian here, arrived in Sydney a few months ago, now looking to start on the PSG. There's a PSG "festival" next month (20 june '15) in Brisbane which I'm going to go to, did you know? (Maybe you happen to be going as well? :) ) Too bad there are so few PSG's for sale here in Australia and even fewer instructors. Have a good one, hope you pushed through and have since your post become a world class PSG player :)
my favorite instruments are the electric guitar, piano, accoustic guitar, and steel guitar. i've taken up trying to learn steel in honor of my poppa who's an amazing steel player himself. i don't want to have all his talent leave with him when he finally goes. steel guitar is one of the hardest, yet most beautiful sounding instruments out there in my honest opinion
Breadon92 Don't know about the hardest, but I'll give you the most beautiful. Not that I think it isn't the hardest, I just literally don't know because I've never tried. I have thought long and hard and I am now seriously considering importing one to Sydney and start on it. Quite expensive though, and no instructors here, so I'm researching what is best to buy. People are advising against any model that has "student" or "entry" in it. What do you think, do you have any good insights?
SadBunny well, i'd have to ask Poppa himself. unfortunately you won't get the kind of dobro, which is very similar to a steel, but more of a banjo like sound its also played the same though and sounds just as nice if played well that i also play, that he has anymore unless you want to pay a pretty penny as his is aunthentic hand made Dobro brothers made Dobro slide guitar before they passed away so they don't make them anymore by hand. and he doesn't have his steels anymore.
Breadon92 Thanks for your swift reply. I don't care about the brand, authenticity or even sound quality, won't make much a difference anyway, a total noob like me won't be able to take advantage of the nuances any time soon anyway. Just looking for a good choice to start with, i.e. no bells&whistles that make it harder, and no complications because of cheapass and/or non-standard components. Any useful information is greatly appreciated. At any rate, greet your Poppa from me, a random Dutch guy from the Interwebs :) Any videos/audios of you guys by any chance? I love them steel duos :)
sadly Poppa doesn't play to much anymore since he has arthritis. he also uses the excuse that he's not god anymore which i call utter BS since he proves himself wrong all the time whenever i can convince him to play. and as for me i got no way of doing it. i'm just a beginner myself and i can only play steel guitar rag which i learned by watching vids. i got a basic SX Lap Steel for a christmas present from my parents for about $300.
A steel guitar is difficult because - well, you can't easily form chords like on a standard guitar by finger placement. You are playing on one or two strings - in fixed positions. creating the chords is done by foot pedal or in most cases, knee pedals. Watch the knees! busy - and you form nearly all the chords using them other than the major chord you play in fixed position.
some how listening to this beautifull melody calms the storm raging in my heart....thank you dave for soothing my broken heart with yet another lovely tune...
Dave : you're a man after my own heart; the Hag was one of my idols when I was picking actively when that song was a big hit for him ; you bring it to life as a steel guitar instumental. Grand job, Dave.. Bernie
Loved the pedal steel for longer than I can remember. Hearing you on You-tube reminds me why. What a wonderful instrument when in the hands of a master. Jim - Hertfordshire
Roy wiks, I also play the steel guitar and adorableI also play the guitar and accordion I think this person's performance is perfectly beautiful I have been any time in my band I play old bluegrass and country.
Such a beautiful sound! Dave you are my absolute favorite steel player bar none. I look forward to hearing you in person in Texas this March. This will be my first jamboree & I am determined to learn this fascinating & awesome instrument! God Bless!
Dave, You play with such grace and feel on every song you do...and this is no exception. Merle Haggard needs to set you up on his stage while he is still performing and allow you to give it that crying steel that is missing in the new country. Great job!
it's like the man invented every song what a talent, this is a hard instrument to play with knee levers and foot peddles, raise strings when changing cords
I wish to thank you all for your comments to my youtube broadcasts. It is very much appreciated.
