To say that a ring modulator multiplies two signals together (the internal VCO & the input signal), is technically correct, but fails to describe what effect it actually has on the resultant output frequencies. Ring modulators produce both the SUM and DIFFERENCE frequencies between the two signals being multiplied. So for example, setting the VCO at 400HZ and playing a note at 300HZ will produce an output with both 100HZ and 700HZ. And playing a note at 500HZ will also produce 100HZ but this time with 900HZ. When you play the exact same note as the VCO, you'll only get one output frequency, at twice the note frequency (sum only, since the difference is 0). That is why the LPF is useful here, because it allows you to filter out the higher frequency sum and leave the lower frequency difference, if you like. Note that setting the VCO to the upper end of the frequency range of the input signal, can have the effect, when listening to the difference signal, of turning a rising sequence of tones into a descending sequence of tones. Try it, set the VCO to a higher frequency, then either slowly pitch bend a note or do a slide up a string to create a rising tone, you'll hear a descending lower tone out of the modulator. Ring modulators are used in radio and microwave circuits to down convert frequencies.
+Syncopator What he said, sum and difference of all frequencies involved. Also known as a balanced, carrier suppressed modulator, or four-quadrant multiplier
so you're basically saying "there is a ring modulator in a microwave"? I'll have to check that out and put my microwave on the pedalboard. where's the input jack?
i usually get super annoyed when people explain ring modulation ( often it's to correct people calling ring mods tremolos ), but you did a damn good job. I'm not only not annoyed but less ignorant. thanks dude!
Thank you for including a math connection. That provided plenty of justification for sharing this with a bunch of third graders. None of them knew that pedals existed or were responsible for such fantastic sound manipulation. This video is so lovely, Randy is my absolute favorite.
Ring mod has always felt like an intimidating effect to me, but got this a few months ago and cannot recommend it enough. SUCH a musical pedal, so inspiring to play, and so easy to get useable sounds from it.
For the sound/noise maker/sculptor there is an endless range of amazing sounds to be found in this box. And yet there is also a wide range of absolutely gorgeously rich conventional vibe and trem sounds in it as well. Recently I've been feeding my CT5 and my Outward with bell tones from it and having endless "fun". Small changes yield big results and it takes a lot of time to tweak to its many sweet spots but its well worth the effort...a main stay pedal for me it has been on my board since I got it about 12 years ago.
PP TheSailor Super late response, but you can get them cheaper depending on what shops you go to. I frequent a guitar shop that isn't a chain (i.e. Guitar Center) and found my Fairfield Shallow Water for $260. Online it's $325, not including whatever shipping fees would be from Canada to TN. Good luck, mate!
It's pricey, but I've never heard a ring modulator like that. Gorgeous and musical - not just dalek noises. Added to increasingly large shopping list...
Great video, think I've watched it about 20 times now. I am not a guitarist but have been keeping my eye out for a tremolo for use with my Fender Rhodes. Can't find any youtube vid examples but have a feeling it would match up quite nicely, do you think this pedal would be a good match?
Did you end up picking a specific tremolo? As an owner of this pedal and the Seymour Duncan Shape Shifter, my preference is for the Shape Shifter--the tremolo on the Randy's Revenge has a unique character because it's ring mod-driven, but it isn't super tweakable, and the price is steep if you're just looking for a trem. Then again, if you want to use the ring mod settings, you can get some pretty sweet Miles Davis fusion sounds out of that Rhodes! Shape Shifter is super tweakable in terms of waveform, phase, depth, etc., and it's stereo, which is a huge bonus for tremolo, especially for a Rhodes. Chase Bliss Gravitas is another good option; probably a few more trem style options than the SS but unfortunately no stereo.
Elliot Knapp I only just noticed this reply, sorry for leaving you hanging for two years. I still have no tremolo, most of my work of late has been recording at home for folk and I can do most of my effects it in the box. I use my Nord for jamming in bands and the onboard option is usually good enough for that. Like you said, this box sounds like it would be good for some experimental tones! Last pedals I bought were Oto machines Bim, Bam and Boum. I figured I needed to cool it a bit on effects after that. There are so many good ones out there, it is very hard to resist.
Just letting you know - this video made me buy this thingy. (220 eur on Reverb). Great fun. Never thought I’d ever buy a ring mod, now I have two, Randy and EHX Ring thing, each one represents a different take on RM.
Hello , thanks for the video. I would like to sync the CVO with a arturia keystep sequencer. Could you tell me what kind of cable do i need and how should i patch it ? tmany thanks
at 5:49 how do you do that continuous sound? is the freeze pedal from EHX? the other notes you play don't seem to freeze too, but they slowly fade, like they have a reverb, or a sustain.
We used this effect for the solo at the end of our song Camel Chase if you'd like to hear what it sounds like in a mix, it's pretty tasty. ua-cam.com/video/IRn5KhWINPg/v-deo.html Go to 3:37
I've watched 10 videos with either Chase Bliss pedals or this one or another brand...but I just don't see the feasibility or necessity of pedals that pitch shift, step, or have wacky reverbs/delays that are not aesthetically pleasing to the ears... The videos are entertaining, though, and very creative. -=80)
You should be careful. I think that may be an interdimensional doorbell.
Your demos have the most welcoming feel to them. Feels like home.
Curl up.
Have a nap.
Have a tea.
+UglyCasanova I really feel the exact opposite, I feel like leaving home.
"Patrick, it's time to go, your plane leaves in an hour!"
"Just a minute mom, I'm just demoing this ring mod on a wooden table top"
Wrongly named, I feel- this has to be the most compassionate and forgiving ring mod I've heard!
Man, this Ring Mod just sounds so much more musical than the other Ring Mod guitar pedals I've heard. That lowpass filter really makes a difference!

too long for a video

tl;dr

Vengeance is mine sayeth Randy ...This is by far the most informative & amusing demo of any ring mod on UA-cam.

Your demos are the best ! Thank you man.
thank YOU lionel
Awesome demo! Your the only one who plays style appropriate for the pedal your show casing. Would love to hear a synth into this pedal.
The best ring mod ever !!!!
It s musical, and can goes from univibe leslie tone, to vibrato, to crazy synth
A must have
I have seen a lot of ringmod demos lately. This is, by far, the best I've seen.
Everyone loves the consciousness that you are and the presence that you have.
all of these videos remind me of Adult Swims bumpers, with the pictures of the model towns and such. love it, brings back the Mr. Rogers love.
everytime you post a video i feel like i need to buy that pedal
That is one beautiful guitar sound.
By far this is my favorite ring mod demo. Style played works well for this effect.
great content. clean, simple, straightforward videos.
I keep coming back for those nice soundscapes . . .
I just ordered one last night. Can’t wait to have this in my toolkit. Love that you’re a Canadian company too.
Nine out of ten monasteries choose Randy for their ring modulation.
I tried to modulate my own ring once. Can't say I liked it much.
gold
wow, one of my favorite of your vids, awesome sounds.
What an amazing demo. Love.
Please do Meet Maude, that pedal yells your style of demonstration.
This ring mod really puts the pedal to the metal.
Oh fellas, this one... this one is special.
I love you, man.
Around 5:20, my cat told me to never purchase this thing. It was her terror that was the first clue. Still might get one though.
Frippertronics in a box. Amazing. Subscribed.
If only it weren't like $300....
Keep up the good work!

Yeh, I realize this comment is 6 yrs. old but that’s pretty much what yer gonna pay for any ‘boutique’ pedal….
beautiful and ring mod aren't normally a go to phrase. 🤗
Randy's Revenge...finally ! :)
You made me buy this. I guess it's a compliment. Also thank you.
i love hearing those american football-esque chords go through this pedal, very pleasant and unexpected haha
those bell sounds!
It's pricey, but I've never heard a ring modulator like that. Gorgeous and musical - not just dalek noises. Added to increasingly large shopping list...
When you are you looking for this pedal and you only find wrestling...
ring mod is perfect for arpeggiating bells
I love you knobs
Hm your demos are okay but you don't play NEARLY enough A minor pentatonic scales.
Scary music words.
Don't understand.
+Knobs Hahaha, you are my spirit animal
Charles Sale GRRREETINGS I'M CHAPPERS AND I KNOW THAT SCALE
efrazable lmaooooo honestly hey...
Their Meet Maude analog delay next??
Have you considered identifying as an Advant-Garde composer?
What do the other 1 of 10 monasteries choose for their ring modulation?
Fuzzmaster general? I bet it's fuzzmaster general....
IT IS
Most expensive channel sub ever? I need one of these...
really great
I like your videos. What kind of light setup do you use, is it natural light? Best, A

I've got this and a fulltone Supatrem 2. The stereo one (suitcase in a box)

This is like the Mooer Lo-Fi Machine's cool uncle.
Perfect!

Next time buy a Pigtronix Ringmaster, it would be a nice addition to your ring mod collection.
How are you feeling about the randy’s revenge VS the ring thing 3 years later?
amazing
Hello , thanks for the video. I would like to sync the CVO with a arturia keystep sequencer. Could you tell me what kind of cable do i need and how should i patch it ? tmany thanks
Hey guys. Need your opinion on whats best. Shall i place this pedal after my looper or after? In a dilemma right now
Real nice
"Subscribe?!"
Oh baby, it's too late for that
Oh it's been considered. Maybe one of these days, would love to be more useful for the bass / synth users.
+Knobs synth demos would be dope
🐐 ring mod.
I need wind chimes in my life again.
It's cool and sounds great, but my EHX Ring Thing has way more tools to work with, probably for the same price or less.
Fantástic! Please try fairfield meet maude
one of the more useable ring mods i've heard
Great demo. How would this sound together with a Microbrute? Did you try it out? I am trying to find a pedal that gives my Micro a different vibe.
Pretty perfect actually. And it has CV as well. The slower kind of tremvibe settings would be a great match with the Microbrute.
What is the pedal that produces the tremolo vibe sound in the beginning?
What kind of guitar/amp is this coming from? Would love to know...
Yes, please!
instant boards of canada machine
Take my money!
love ring mods
can you please do a video for the judder?
yell heah
at 5:49 how do you do that continuous sound?
is the freeze pedal from EHX?
the other notes you play don't seem to freeze too, but they slowly fade, like they have a reverb, or a sustain.
mr &/or ms knobs, what type of compressor are you using?
So, like the moogerfooger but without the lfo?
my next pedal :p
👍🏿🤘
Do you use a noise gate for your demos? I'm trying to figure out how you get this ring mod to sound so clean, no carrier tone hiss whatsoever
does your have a lot of noise when not playing notes?
We used this effect for the solo at the end of our song Camel Chase if you'd like to hear what it sounds like in a mix, it's pretty tasty.
