I think the Talbot character was not very popular with audiences who loved Matthew Crawley and Charles Blake so much more! So probably, a convenient scheduling conflict story was produced to save face for all involved. I, for one personally feel the Henry Talbot character could have been played by a tree! But don't mind me, what does a 60 plus year old Asian man living in South East Asia know about characters in an English movie? Hahaha!
Well, it looks like whatever happens will depend on whether Goode decides to come back or not. If he won't, then I think the best solution would not be death, but rather divorce. Even though it would be another nail on the coffin of conformity and old world customs, it would actually be in keeping with all the changes the Crawleys have had to endure throughout their story. I think Lady Mary is actually more conventional that Lady Edith, but she is also quite practical. I don't see her languishing as a good little wife waiting for Henry to decide to show up. She would probably face the fact that their relationship is not making progress as it should and call it quits. However, I don't see her entering into a serious relationship too soon after that, at least not one that would lead to marriage quickly. If she remarries, it will probably be after a very long while. She might take up lovers on the quiet and discrete though. I don't know, because she might be off relationships for a long while. But I definitely don't see "Henry " dying. I see him getting his walking papers.

Maybe Cora's mother could make more appearances. It would be fun to see how she interacts with Isabel.

No recast!! I LOVE the way Henry stands up to Mary - the only one (aside from Tom Branson when she “outed” Edith’s love child) - and I love him for that!! He should come back and have a more developed role - he’s a very fine, versatile actor whose talents have been underused in this series.
It would be interesting if Moseley becomes an accomplished screen writer and the Crawley’s invest in his movie, Mary and the family/staff decamp to Hollywood and include a visit to New York on the way. That gives Mary chance to catch up with the director fellow and see what life Barrow is leading. Mary also hears whispers about the potential recession from her Uncle and Grandmother and so her and Branson reorganise the family finances. Some thoughts…
I like your view of where to take this series/Movie. It would interesting for Mary, Mosley, and Edith go to the Booming of Hollywood's early days and talkie movies. Funny, though, Hollywood's real estate owner, planned a community for morals and Christian values. Boy did that go in the other direction. His wife coined the towns name, and later added "Land" to the sign for people to come and purchase the homes. Sign fell into disaray and refurbushed, leaving "Land" off the sign. I would love to go back to that time, with todays information. But, that would be a paradox. 😜😛😁
No matter what...I personally need to see Mary developing more of her grandmother's Violets " personality" the "seems a shame to waste such a good pudding" ...responses or the "promise" .... retorts. I want it to be obvious...the people who wrote the lines for VIOLET need to write lines like that for Mary...And the way Maggie delivered them ...well....that talent NEEDS to be continued even if done out of admirational recreating of her style as best as possibly can be done....I WOULD LOVE TO SEE SLICES...GLIMPSES ...OF VIOLETS PERSONALITY REFLECTED IN MARY AS SHE NOW MANAGES DOWNTON.
I don’t think anyone but Maggie Smith could carry off those lines. I’m afraid the series is seriously damaged by her loss. Julian Fellowes is truly the most talented of writers but he’s not a magician … wish him luck though, as I, too, love Downton Abby and all it’s characters.

What about Lady Edith? Downton Abbey is not all about Mary. Edith Pelham (nee Lady Edith Crawley), the Marchioness of Hexham, is my favourite character. She has finally found happiness after all those previous setbacks, and she is higher ranked than her dear sister.
It’s a big deal because the second movie made such a big deal about it and kept calling attention to his absence. It didn’t matter much in the first film, but when the second film kept going on and on about how absent Henry was, it did end up mattering
Matthew Goode was amazing as Robert Evens in The Offer. He was a central character over 10 episodes. Incredible performance. There isn't much for him to do in Downton Abbey except show up next to Mary.
Have some stories including the children. How old would they be by now? Also, like another comment said, how about the storylines of Daisy and some others? I'd like to see the Bates family. Robert's sister (senior moment: forgot her name! Rosamund?) could use a love interest, perhaps. (As for Cora's mother, I find her character to be irritating and a bit rude, so the less I see of her, the better.)
Charles Blake should be written back into Downtown Abby after Mathrew died he arrived to help Marry with how to survive and the pigs épisode was so funny. Charles Blake stood up to Marry. Charles Blake could return as her friend and equal. Mary need to développe more of her late grandmother's spirit and her American grandmother's now that would be something. Charles Blake and Tom Brandson can remind Marry when its time to be still and support her when its time for a fight.
It’s a shame that they didn’t catch the part of Henry to somebody who would have cared about the series. If I was a casting director I would definitely think about casting somebody who really seemed excited to be in Downton Abbey.

Henry dies in a plane crash on the way home, but after Mary finds out that he had been with someone else. Then, she can pursue friendships with whomever she wants. Violet's portrait needs to be able to move a little (like the ones at Hogwarts), so we know she's watching the family!
I don't think Matthew Goode is coming back and if there is another movie, Mary will be a divorcee. What happened to the automobile company he and Branson were starting? That seems to have disappeared into the ether, just like Molesley's teaching career and Daisy's plans to stop being an assistant cook.
Molesley was still teaching. He was on summer break during the last movie. Now, perhaps he gives it up to be a script writer in time, but I doubt that would be shown right away.

There could be if Martha is still alive. Martha has a lifetime interest in the capital her husband left her. It only reverts to her son on her death. If he predeceases her without an heir, the fortune would then revert to Cora.
Not so much. Lady Catherine of Highclere Castle divorced in the1930's and remarried before WWII. Art can imitate real life. They've done it before. Edith adopted her bio daughter the same way Loretta Young adopted her bio daughter.
In terms of keeping Downton, I very much suspect that in the end the story will mirror that of the Earl and Countess Carnarvon, and the Abbey will remain safely in the hands of the family.
Hollywood did great during the depression. People liked escaping from reality by lush surroundings in movies. I foresee Downton used as more movie sets.
Much as everyone hates the idea, it has to end soon. Otherwise it will become like one of those American series which go on and on and everyone just gets sick of them and switches off. Better to end it when people are screaming out for more - rather than having them switch off.

I missed the 'idea' of Henry, but the two actors did not show an abundance of attraction to each other. The idea of him being killed in another car crash seems a bit over the top, but the ensuing anguish of Mary right before the financial collapse of the Depression, with the sudden death of Cora's brother in the US of a heart attack, meaning Cora would be the heir to that fortune... hmmmm. Charles Blake could arrive back into Mary's life, become that pillar of strength she needs PLUS his own fortune... At least, he had the class status correct, whereas Henry was a fish out of water. With WWII looming, George would be almost of age, having been born in 1920. Maybe that would be DA4's major storyline, just let him come home unscathed! I'd like to see Edith really blossom as an author. It would be great to see how her character could become a stronger woman. Bertie is such a sweet guy, showing how he manages his estate during the Depression, helping the local townsfolk. The sideline elements of Moseley and Baxter, Daisy and Andy, Mrs. Patmore and the farmer... Yes, I'd love to see more, eventually seeing Mary as the matriarch as the swinging sixties begin! Shades of my own grandmother in Berkeley, California during the sixties! Helping her lodger university students grow 'herbs' in their closets with grow lights!
Killing Henry off if he doesn’t want to be in these movies is not a big deal. It’s happened to women enough and truly Mary did not love Henry like she did Matthew. I think she would recover.
If you see "Gosford Park" -- Julian Fellowes' English-country-manor murder mystery, released in the 1990s ‐- you will see many similarities between that movie and "Downtown Abbey," including a timely visit to the grand country estate by a Hollywood producer and his entourage. But "Downtown Abbey," in comparison to "Gosford Park," is saccharine. Another difference between those two Fellowes creations is that "Gosford Park" features the wistful, haunting songs of the early 20th century composer and songwriter Ivor Novello. He is played in "Gosford Park" by the gorgeous and, at that time, still young Jeremy Northam. ❤ Clive Owen and Helen Mirren also star in "Gosford Park" as -- spoiler alert! -- a mother and son who are each, with good reason, consumed in a bloodthisrty vendetta against the wicked, old industrialist who owns Gosford Park.
I definitely don’t see a 4th movie happening but a 3rd would be nice. If Henry won’t be in it they shouldn’t do it at all. And if Mary is 40+ I don’t see her having more children.

I didn't miss Henry at all in the sequels. His character was the least interesting in the cast. I'd love to see Hugh Dancy return, and another visit to that dreamy villa in the South of France wouldn't be bad either!
It is a shame that Matthew Goode isn't prepared to do another cameo for a future movie 3, if he can fit it in. Even if he were to have a few scenes with Tom or Mary, which would be easier to schedule and film separately. Fellowes made a poor excuse for Henry's absence - racing in Istanbul. After losing all interest in racing in the finale of season 6, which did not seem to be a passing change of mind at the time, and having found a new going concern with Tom (who he gets on extremely well with - even like a brother), he's racing internationally, not even locally as he had been. Fellowe's excuse lacks all credibility. Henry does not seem the sort to equivocate and suddenly do an about turn. In addition, he talked of having finally found a woman he's fallen in love with enough to marry - so this marriage is really important to him. And he's makes a reference at the church, for Edith's wedding, that what with a new baby and new business he absolutely couldn't be happier! So now he is happily putting significant strain on his marriage and not particularly fussed with his own, first child.... I've had a think and I reckon Fellowes could have put Henry in hospital with a a serious but stable illness which requires lots of time to completely recover (there are a number of those). Now and then, Mary heads off to the hospital ("off stage"), and then later reports to Tom and/or the others on how he's doing (he could start off in a coma and then emerges from it etc). It's just that it all happens "off stage"/ Downton hasn't had someone in the family be ill for some time in the hospital.. A serious illness like that would be a new plot direction.
I'd rather Mary and Henry get divorced rather than killing his character off....having a second husband die would just be another trauma conga line. Some other people down this section have mentioned bringing Charles Blake back to be husband #3, and I wouldn't object to that, however, I DO think it would be awesome to bring Evelyn Napier back...it would show tremendous character growth if Mary went from finding him 'boring' to realizing how great (and loyal) a guy to her he always was.
I think it can easily extend to a new series or three or a few movies. If you keep it classy and aristocratic which is the main draw of the programme, you could see the children as adults with their own trials and tribulations,you could probably still do it without any of the other cast as long as the references are kept for the audience I’d definitely watch that’s for sure
Tom Branson is the chief ex of his Motor company. The thirties crash could make or break it. Mary could have made better investments. The uncertainty of the time could wipe out her husbands finances and he might commit suicide or be shot by a disgruntled auto worker

The movie did well, in spite of Henry not appearing in it. Guess they did not want to do a repeat of another husband dying. But it was uncomfortable, watching Mary, alone, troubled by her husbands absence, knowing this marriage was a mistake. The transformation of Mary from pr CA Irvious movie is startaling. M
Honestly, a death would be more believable. It would be less traumatic for Mary if her husband was unfaithful. I can even see her understanding that his unfaithfulness began with racing being his first mistress. Eventually I can see Mary's son being forbidden from going to the second WW. And him defying that or their Daughter enlists to work as a nurse.
Recast Henry - I never particularly liked the actor that played Henry. Recasting shouldn't be such a big deal since Matthew Goode never played a big part and wasn't even there for the last movie.
Very easy Mary is an independent lady. She can divorce Mr. Talbot. That will give you mor new romances. In soaps a character that is happy, becames boring, and Mary is anything but that.
In the years of me growing up we had reasons in the U.K., you could get a nice tan but as more rockets and planes went up more cars on the road the weather has changed. As a child you knew winter spring and summer and autumn but now we can’t get two days in a row except last year to be the same. First lockdown the weather was fab no flying or cars beautiful blue sky. Lady Mary should divorce or change the man she has been through so much for a young person. If actors don’t want to do it then step aside.
It will not be easy - recasting would not suit me. Perhaps build on Rose & USA, trying to cope with the events mid-1930’s with the unrest in Europe at that time. Having said that… please do not make it about the 1936 abdication & all that upheaval because it would not interest me. I’m perfectly satisfied with the sequel & hope a third one would not disappoint. If you want to make a completely new movie, you might need to move on to the 1950’s and that would be quite a stretch.
I am more than ready to see the series end. There is just so much to do with character development and new story lines and I think they have all been used up. Truthfully I did not miss Henry Talbot one bit in A New Era - I was never a fan of this character from the start. I love Matthew Goode as an actor but I really disliked the character of Henry Talbot and thought he was a poor match for Lady Mary. (Charles Blake was the perfect match for Mary.) Apart from being handsome and easy on the eyes, his character was dull and uninteresting. He and Mary had nothing in common and the fact that Lady Mary lost her first husband Matthew in a car wreck, it was quite a stretch that she would even consider becoming involved in a relationship with a race car driver, let alone marry one. There really was not much that Henry had to bring to the marriage and quite frankly it was very surprising that Julian Fellowes introduced such a character. It was also surprising that he didn't take the time to consider the availability of the actor in any possible sequels, since it was obvious that fans of the series still had a big interest in continuing the Crawley story in the form of film. It's well known that Matthew Goode is a busy actor and the likelihood of his availability would be very limited going forward. If there is a third film, Lady Mary's story is going to be a very awkward one. If Matthew Goode is either unavailable or uninterested, there will have to be some kind of resolution to his repeated absence. How many times would it take for Henry to be off racing cars around the world before Mary got fed up with an absentee husband. It seems rather redundant and ironic to have his character killed off in a car crash. It would be cruel to have him die of some unfortunate circumstance or illness, so it seems divorce would be a likely option. Any of the scenarios would be unpleasant for Lady Mary, who has already been through some challenging times in her life. In any event, if there is a third sequel it will be very interesting to see how Mr. Fellowes approaches Lady Mary's story as well as the stories of the other upstairs/downstairs members of the Crawley household.
I lawsy had the feeling maybe Bertie was a closet gay. (Lover of late cousin) It would go with Edith always getting the short end of the stick. That would make a miniseries there. Edith discovering then how she makes do with her life. I think she would be too ashamed to divorce whereas Mary will for her husband abandoning her. That would be a good contrasting story to watch. How the two sisters deal with betrayal.

I don't think Matthew Goode is coming back and if there is another movie, Mary will be a divorcee. What happened to the automobile company he and Branson were starting? That seems to have disappeared into the ether, just like Molesley's teaching career and Daisy's plans to stop being an assistant cook.

Molesley was still teaching. He was on summer break during the last movie. Now, perhaps he gives it up to be a script writer in time, but I doubt that would be shown right away.

There could be if Martha is still alive. Martha has a lifetime interest in the capital her husband left her. It only reverts to her son on her death. If he predeceases her without an heir, the fortune would then revert to Cora.

In terms of keeping Downton, I very much suspect that in the end the story will mirror that of the Earl and Countess Carnarvon, and the Abbey will remain safely in the hands of the family.
Hollywood did great during the depression. People liked escaping from reality by lush surroundings in movies. I foresee Downton used as more movie sets.
Much as everyone hates the idea, it has to end soon. Otherwise it will become like one of those American series which go on and on and everyone just gets sick of them and switches off. Better to end it when people are screaming out for more - rather than having them switch off.

I missed the 'idea' of Henry, but the two actors did not show an abundance of attraction to each other. The idea of him being killed in another car crash seems a bit over the top, but the ensuing anguish of Mary right before the financial collapse of the Depression, with the sudden death of Cora's brother in the US of a heart attack, meaning Cora would be the heir to that fortune... hmmmm. Charles Blake could arrive back into Mary's life, become that pillar of strength she needs PLUS his own fortune... At least, he had the class status correct, whereas Henry was a fish out of water. With WWII looming, George would be almost of age, having been born in 1920. Maybe that would be DA4's major storyline, just let him come home unscathed! I'd like to see Edith really blossom as an author. It would be great to see how her character could become a stronger woman. Bertie is such a sweet guy, showing how he manages his estate during the Depression, helping the local townsfolk. The sideline elements of Moseley and Baxter, Daisy and Andy, Mrs. Patmore and the farmer... Yes, I'd love to see more, eventually seeing Mary as the matriarch as the swinging sixties begin! Shades of my own grandmother in Berkeley, California during the sixties! Helping her lodger university students grow 'herbs' in their closets with grow lights!
Killing Henry off if he doesn’t want to be in these movies is not a big deal. It’s happened to women enough and truly Mary did not love Henry like she did Matthew. I think she would recover.

I didn't miss Henry at all in the sequels. His character was the least interesting in the cast. I'd love to see Hugh Dancy return, and another visit to that dreamy villa in the South of France wouldn't be bad either!

It is a shame that Matthew Goode isn't prepared to do another cameo for a future movie 3, if he can fit it in. Even if he were to have a few scenes with Tom or Mary, which would be easier to schedule and film separately. Fellowes made a poor excuse for Henry's absence - racing in Istanbul. After losing all interest in racing in the finale of season 6, which did not seem to be a passing change of mind at the time, and having found a new going concern with Tom (who he gets on extremely well with - even like a brother), he's racing internationally, not even locally as he had been. Fellowe's excuse lacks all credibility. Henry does not seem the sort to equivocate and suddenly do an about turn. In addition, he talked of having finally found a woman he's fallen in love with enough to marry - so this marriage is really important to him. And he's makes a reference at the church, for Edith's wedding, that what with a new baby and new business he absolutely couldn't be happier! So now he is happily putting significant strain on his marriage and not particularly fussed with his own, first child.... I've had a think and I reckon Fellowes could have put Henry in hospital with a a serious but stable illness which requires lots of time to completely recover (there are a number of those). Now and then, Mary heads off to the hospital ("off stage"), and then later reports to Tom and/or the others on how he's doing (he could start off in a coma and then emerges from it etc). It's just that it all happens "off stage"/ Downton hasn't had someone in the family be ill for some time in the hospital.. A serious illness like that would be a new plot direction.
I'd rather Mary and Henry get divorced rather than killing his character off....having a second husband die would just be another trauma conga line. Some other people down this section have mentioned bringing Charles Blake back to be husband #3, and I wouldn't object to that, however, I DO think it would be awesome to bring Evelyn Napier back...it would show tremendous character growth if Mary went from finding him 'boring' to realizing how great (and loyal) a guy to her he always was.
I think it can easily extend to a new series or three or a few movies.
If you keep it classy and aristocratic which is the main draw of the programme, you could see the children as adults with their own trials and tribulations,you could probably still do it without any of the other cast as long as the references are kept for the audience

The movie did well, in spite of Henry not appearing in it. Guess they did not want to do a repeat of another husband dying. But it was uncomfortable, watching Mary, alone, troubled by her husbands absence, knowing this marriage was a mistake. The transformation of Mary from pr CA Irvious movie is startaling.

It would be good if Henry was bought back. It wouldn't be the same with a different actor, or if Henry was killed off, there has been enough of that.
Honestly, a death would be more believable. It would be less traumatic for Mary if her husband was unfaithful. I can even see her understanding that his unfaithfulness began with racing being his first mistress. Eventually I can see Mary's son being forbidden from going to the second WW. And him defying that or their Daughter enlists to work as a nurse.
Recast Henry - I never particularly liked the actor that played Henry. Recasting shouldn't be such a big deal since Matthew Goode never played a big part and wasn't even there for the last movie.
Charles Blake should indeed be written back into the story. He was such an interesting character, and he made made Mary a more interesting character.
Dump Henry and replace him with another actor. His continued absence doesn't make sense with the story line.🙄

In the years of me growing up we had reasons in the U.K., you could get a nice tan but as more rockets and planes went up more cars on the road the weather has changed. As a child you knew winter spring and summer and autumn but now we can’t get two days in a row except last year to be the same. First lockdown the weather was fab no flying or cars beautiful blue sky.
Lady Mary should divorce or change the man she has been through so much for a young person. If actors don’t want to do it then step aside.

Having said that… please do not make it about the 1936 abdication & all that upheaval because it would not interest me.
I’m perfectly satisfied with the sequel & hope a third one would not disappoint. If you want to make a completely new movie, you might need to move on to
the 1950’s and that would be quite a stretch.

I am more than ready to see the series end. There is just so much to do with character development and new story lines and I think they have all been used up. And why on earth would they use a storyline of the children as grown ups? I was so happy with the original series, but all good things must come to an end.
I never liked Henry Talbot. Good riddance to him however they choose to do it.
Truthfully I did not miss Henry Talbot one bit in A New Era - I was never a fan of this character from the start. I love Matthew Goode as an actor but I really disliked the character of Henry Talbot and thought he was a poor match for Lady Mary. (Charles Blake was the perfect match for Mary.) Apart from being handsome and easy on the eyes, his character was dull and uninteresting. He and Mary had nothing in common and the fact that Lady Mary lost her first husband Matthew in a car wreck, it was quite a stretch that she would even consider becoming involved in a relationship with a race car driver, let alone marry one. There really was not much that Henry had to bring to the marriage and quite frankly it was very surprising that Julian Fellowes introduced such a character. It was also surprising that he didn't take the time to consider the availability of the actor in any possible sequels, since it was obvious that fans of the series still had a big interest in continuing the Crawley story in the form of film. It's well known that Matthew Goode is a busy actor and the likelihood of his availability would be very limited going forward. If there is a third film, Lady Mary's story is going to be a very awkward one. If Matthew Goode is either unavailable or uninterested, there will have to be some kind of resolution to his repeated absence. How many times would it take for Henry to be off racing cars around the world before Mary got fed up with an absentee husband. It seems rather redundant and ironic to have his character killed off in a car crash. It would be cruel to have him die of some unfortunate circumstance or illness, so it seems divorce would be a likely option. Any of the scenarios would be unpleasant for Lady Mary, who has already been through some challenging times in her life. In any event, if there is a third sequel it will be very interesting to see how Mr. Fellowes approaches Lady Mary's story as well as the stories of the other upstairs/downstairs members of the Crawley household.

I lawsy had the feeling maybe Bertie was a closet gay. (Lover of late cousin) It would go with Edith always getting the short end of the stick. That would make a miniseries there. Edith discovering then how she makes do with her life. I think she would be too ashamed to divorce whereas Mary will for her husband abandoning her. That would be a good contrasting story to watch. How the two sisters deal with betrayal.
