      I’ve found you only catch those when she’s with horses. I actually met the Queen once (and Prince Phillip too, may he RIP) on one of her visits to Canada - I was in my late teens, working as a groom at one of the higher end hotels in Jasper & was completely caught me off-guard when she and a small retinue (which included her bodyguard/security of course) suddenly just appeared at the door of the stall I was mucking out at the time - I’d just come in from warming up my mare for the day, and was stinking to high heaven of horse, lol, but I managed to somehow keep my cool & even pulled off a small curtesy, (we’d all been briefed on ediquite, etc , when it was confirmed she’d be arriving later in the week…but what to do when meeting HRH while mucking out a stall oddly wasn’t covered 😂).
      Much to my surprise, she’d actually seen me out warming her up & had come over to check out my mare & ask me a few questions about her. She was incredibly kind, smiled lots and was actually quite funny - Prince Philip was as well (he apologized for the lack of warning, lol). Very much a memory I’ve cherished through the years, got to admit ☺️

    This is almost exactly the plot to Downton Abbey. The American-born lady of the house, financial struggles, changing the practices in how the house is managed and with it a diversion of the old ways into a more modern approach. The threats of staff cuts and the displeasure of the staff and family for having to make the changes in the first place. Only major differences are the families, time periods, and reasons why they are losing money and the solutions they come up with.

      @@donbrown1284 Actually he didn't. - you think what occurred at Downton ONLY happened at Highclere???? The stories of Downton are woven from the histories from MANY aristocratic families and are true (and typical) to the history of the period. For instance, the death of Pamuk in bed happened at another family estate. The stories have largely been hidden up until now due to the British "stiff upper lip", class cohesion and protection of the period aristocratic ideals. JUlian Fellowes just combined them all into a fluid, entertaining narrative.

      Not locals but employees from a tech company celebrating grossing 6mill in profits for the year, part of their golden handshake of thanks was this banquet. Ashamed to hear Irish accents and witness the destruction of a beautiful home. Worked the hospitality route for over 15yrs and quit because entitled ignoramouses such as these spoiled it for the many. The manager is of the new thinking even back in the 90s. Machines over people, less for more profit. People aren't stupid. If they go to a home like this? Front door greeting is a must! He said he had experience in hotel trade? Well the first is the doormen and valets, next is reception inside the front door. You aren't delivering to the hotel slash home but being a paying invited guest for goodness sake. You go to expect service with a smile. I dan do self service in my own kitchen at home! Part of the package is to be 'served' and feel like lord of the manor for an afternoon. The bit about telling Lord Carenarvon (sp?) To meet the guests on horseback had me looking at the new manager like...have you lost your ever loving mind? He's too old for that nonsense and far too polite to get through to the fanciful idiot the praticalities of being on horseback and getting thrown then facing hospital bills??! Thank goodness for downton abbey.

    It's so interesting to see this old video from the 1990's and know that, 15 years later, the BBC TV series, Downton Abbey would end up saving it. That is, not only because of the revenue from being used as a set but also the publicity that ensures they have a much brighter future. And, while some may resent the world that created such living, I think it's precisely because of that resentment that it's important to remember it. And it is a part of history.

      It is a celebration of a time when the wealthy and powerful actually threw crumbs to the dogs, and poor. They really did not care, since everything belonged to them, including the people.
      As we now see, that event is played out daily, though more subtly, as the handful of wealthy and powerful acquire, and have acquired, more than half the wealth of the in the entire world, and along with the wealth, the power over the rest of us. Nice as they may be, they are a part of the system that impoverishes us all, even if they may be struggling, who of us doesn’t, except those few who own us, them and our governments. All governments, Communist, Socialist, democracy, republic, it doesn’t really matter, that handful of people manipulate it all, as long as they own most of the money.

      They received approximately 15 million pounds from the show throughout its run plus their visitor numbers went from 150 to 1200 a day. However when they were approached by the producers they had to make a restoration of 12 million pounds but it ensured its safety for the next generation as Lady Carnarvon said in an interview. So now they worry more for monthly maintenance than restorations because they were even able to allow visitors go to the tower again and that brought more revenue

    I can certainly understand the financial aspect as it probably takes quite a bit of profit to maintain Highclere and it's staff, that he wanted more to modernize it and take away from the personal aspect of servitude. I agree when one comes to visit this castle they shouldn't have to enter through the back door. The first room visitors should see that awe inspiring entrance. I for one would want to see that first upon entering this grand castle. I'm not sure that guy had a clue.

    I think Adrian is completely incorrect. We came Krespan than 3,000 miles just to visit Highclere. Walking through the front door was very special to us. The high tea was WONDERFUL and perfect and gave us just what we had hoped for on that special day. Charge more and perhaps add the lower cost option. I do believe if you opened more and made a set schedule that it would be beneficial. I found Louis, your then Butler, to be very helpful and be acted in a way that made us feel special. I did not see him I. This video and do hope he is still there. I would LOVE to come to a banquet at Highclere but more like dinner at Downton and less like a mid evil feast. It would be amazing to get to spend a night in the Castle as we were able at Roch Castle in Wales. We loved your home l. Very interesting to watch this program after watching the PBS documentary Secrets of Highclere just last weekend! Being a history dork i tend to be more familiar with medevil & Tudor eras than years the Downton Abbey series portrays, but I've got the gist of what the show is about & just haven't gotten around to spending a weekend binging:) the documentary was filmed a few years ago while Downtown Abbey was a couple seasons old & very popular, the castle & huge estate were beautiful & in wonderful condition compared to the shabby drapery, ceilings with huge holes, unkempt landscaping, & general feeling of despair the Carnarvon family would also have to let their ancestral home be taken over by the Trust like other great estates/houses.
    Wonderful to see how successful the many different ventures that branch out from Highclere have become & hearing the amazing stories about the family & castle over 500 years! I'm going to have to watch the 2 shows back to back & really be able to appreciate all the work involved in bringing Highclere back!

    For me as a Canadian, whose family goes back to Colonial Nova Scotia, Highclere Castle is very important. Most British documentaries ignore the role played by Highclere Castle in the final act of Canada's creation. In 1866 this stately home hosted Sir. John A. MacDonald, Father of Confederation and first PM along with members of the Canadian delegation. The dreams of a new nation were expanded upon and debated in this lovely home prior to the act of Parliament that would create another great democracy. I'm constantly surprised by the fact that Britain does not celebrate this extraordinary birthing. Perhaps British media think they will offend America by telling a Canadian story??? How sad and juvenile of them. On the other hand perhaps pure ignorance???

      I don't feel particularly sorry that the rich people can't afford their castle.
      I think it's important to remember that the castle didn't fall into disrepair due to inheritance tax. It fell into disrepair because the family refused to open it to tourism in an era when old money doesn't hold weight. The owners talk about allowing the public inside as if it's a horrible idea, but it's not. These aristocrats refused to accept that they don't have the same status and wealth now that they used to have, and the castle suffered as a result.

    • @Matthew24.4
      @Matthew24.4 6 років тому +18

      Not sure about British property law but in some other western nations you can use a Trust to own the property thereby avoiding (or at least delaying) inheritance tax. The trusts last for 99 years in Australia. I'd be surprised if old money aristocrats weren't using Trusts if the option was available to them.

    • @maryanneslater9675
      @maryanneslater9675 6 років тому +18

      Two world wars and the Great Depression took their toll on the old aristocratic families too. As well as ancestors who gambled or went in for extreme landscaping.
      A former Lord Carnarvon blew much of the family money (including some of his wife's inheritance) on finding King Tut's tomb. Lady Carnarvon had already spent a lot turning Highclere and some of their other property into hospitals for soldiers in WWI. She even sold a few paintings that would be worth a hundred times as much now.

      But the estate isn't just the house. There are acres and acres of land that previous generations didn't put to good enough use. That much land could easily net them enough money to pay the tax, and still live well, and have funds for repairs and maintenance. It was bad management that did them in, not the inheritance tax.

    Says a lot about their financial situation back then that they would host people like that. Nowadays most estates have priced out idiots like that, and of course Highclare doesn't need those knuckleheads anymore.

      Neither is a self service tea room - especially at the expense of someone's livelihood.
      That is *such* a low-class, Wal-Mart mentality..

    Disgusting how these kind of people can act like compete fools in such a distinguished facility. If I owned Highclere they would not be invited back and the company would be place on the forever banned list. People like this no longer have any pride in anything more less with themselves.

      The company should have had to agree to cover any damage, as part of the booking.

    Downton abbey movie coming. inconvenience for the residents but money coming in too. Good fortune to them, my TV died an I did not replace it, but I listen to Downton theme music everyday, an extraordinary sound track, really. never get tired of that moody jazz indecision love song stuff.

    I just love it when Queen Elizabeth is sarcastic like that, she's not mean about it, she just reminds me of my Gran. It makes me happy to hear her laugh and have a chance to be normal once in a while. She has so much weight on her shoulders she deserves every happy carefree moment she can get.
    I'm American but my DNA says I'm 98% English, Scot, Irish, Welch and the other 2% is Danish, so I hail from the Isles and I have respect and care for her.
