By far, THE most attractive character on the show, physically, his intelligence and mostly, because of his heart. Dan Stevens was a key part of what made Downton Abbey so great. While the show went on for 3 more seasons, it was never quite the same without my leading man.

For me, my favorite from the second I saw him was Thomas. He’s misunderstood and even when he does something horrible, he then ends up doing something heroic or something that makes everyone feel bad for him. And also Rob James Collier portrays Thomas really well 💜
Edith deserved to be in top 5. She had so much development as a character. And she was so relatable. She struggled to settle down and to find herself. She made lots of mistakes, but tried to live her best life as she went on maturing and on changing her mentality. To be honest, she's my #2, right after Violet.

Sarah F I wish Dan Stevens stayed a bit longer, he chose to do some disappointing movies, even Jessica who played Sybil. She should just had her character moved out, instead of killing her off, it was the dumbest decision.
Isobel is my favourite. Such a good, passionate soul who always tries to help people. She is very loveable and her one liners/friendship with Violet is iconic👌
I agreed, also her character was how the social upper class really start to understand the need to change and to adapt as the society moved on into a new system and different ways of living from the old Victorian period

To me, as an Irish person, I feel that the writers could have done so much more with Tom. The period that Downton focused on was a very important and crucial time in Irelands history and it's a shame it was overlooked.
I am Irish and I agree in a sense but to even have this much Irish history being part of the storyline was very rare. It is usually an overlooked part of history by the British and is rarely, if not, ever mentioned in period dramas. Seeing a British show express an Irish sentiment and a connection to Ireland without the usual stereotypes was really refreshing to see!
My heart has always belonged to Matthew Crawley he is a sweet man and such a romantic not to mention exceptionally gorgeous with that warm kind smile and those striking crystal blue eyes how could you not fall in love with him 😍 Downton wasn't the same without him lighting up the building.

My personal list with brief annotations (from least to greatest) 10. Robert Crawley, 7th Earl of Grantham - It's not that I don't love Robert, because I do, but I'm partial to the downstairs staff so he fits right here. He is quite complex, capable of great compassion but also narrow-mindedness at the same time. However, he is ultimately intelligent enough to accept change and is actually one of the more progressive characters on the show. 09. Joseph Molesley, School Teacher, Part-time Footman - Unlucky though he may be throughout the series, he shows great character by remaining so humble and positive despite his troubles. Molesley is often used as comic relief, but he is also one of the most morally strong people at Downton, and a hero in his own right. 08. Phyliss Baxter, Lady's Maid to Cora - the best of her ladyship's three maids. She is compassionate and kind hearted but also worldly and wise in a way that does not make her naïve. She makes a great pairing with Mr. Moseley and I hope they find happiness together in their fictional lives at the end of the entire Downton Abbey saga (films included). 07. Thomas Barrow, Butler - The best way I can describe Thomas is he has a criminal mind but not a criminal heart. He is prone to dark emotions and ugliness, but he also displays true courage at the expense of his own well being several times. Truly one of the saga's most interesting characters. 06. John Bates, Valet to Lord Grantham - Barrow's rival and the one man in the house who is a true match for his wits. Bates doesn't say much, but you feel his toughness through his silence and never cross him or you will live to regret it. 05. Charles Carson, Retired - Snobbish at times, rigid, and slow to change. But he has a good heart and is as steady as they come. He represents the last of his breed of men who were extremely loyal to their masters. 04. Anna Bates (nee Smith), Lady's Maid to Mary - Kind, smart, intelligent, and very beautiful. Anna was also capable of showing guile and cunning when she wanted to, belying a mischievous heart underneath her morals. 03. Beryl Patmore, Cook - Daisy's surrogate mother and one of the funniest people on the show. Wise and surprisingly philosophical, Mrs. Patmore is one of the hearts of the show. Without her, the show would not have been as big of a success. 02. Elise Carson (nee Hughes), Housekeeper - The true leader of the downstairs staff and the person everyone turns too for help. Mrs. Hughes perfectly balances toughness with kindness and I'm so happy she got her man at the end. 01. Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham - Without her wit and presence, the show would simply not work. Dame Maggie is a living treasure and the Dowager is one of her greatest gifts to our cinematic and pop culture canon.
Thomas Barrow is only an honorable mention and Tom Branson isn’t even on the list. I thought those two would be in the top three for sure. Mary was very egoistic and cruel, specially to Edith. In my opinion she didn't deserved that happy ending, they all forgive her just too easy. Edith had a great evolution from a needy girl to a strong independent woman and she was always kind

You know something's wrong with this list when Tom is not there. You know you need another top 10. Downton has so many brilliant and really important characters such as Daisy, O'Bryan, Thomas, Isobel and Tom, of course. The development of all characters are amazing in this show. I like how you said Matthew is the gateway character to the audience because he was thrown into the aristocratic way of life. Arguably Branson carried that on from season 4 as he is also a fish out of water, more so than Matthew to be honest.
Jikes this is a tough one. To choose the best character is difficult. I love Violet Crawley, her sharp wit is the best. But I have this list of my own. The couples, upstairs and downstairs. Divided into those two groups. First the upstairs group: Edith & Bertie #4, Sybil & Branson #3, Cora & Robert #2 and in first place, yes you guess right, Mary and Matthew. Downstairs: Andy and Daisy at #4, Molesley and Baxter at #3, Elsie and Carson #2 and first: Anna and Bates. Now to choose the my favorite couple overall is, TaDa.... Anna and Bates!!!!! Why? Although most of these couples had their trials and tribulations and came out on top, Anna and Bates just couldn't at times catch a break. Their love and devotion for each other were tested over and over again. Yes, they kept secrets from one another but it were always for the other one's best interest. And though all of that they stuck together. Bates in prison, Anna did her utmost to get him out. Anna in prison, Bates were there for her. They are my favorite couple out of all. Sorry Matthew and Mary but you have to take second place in this one.
I think the whole of the main Downton abbey cast are the greatest characters! The all grew and evolved throughout the show and it wouldn’t be the same without them! I just binge watched this series ever since I watched the movie. My goodness, Tom Branson is a fave. His story arc was really good and he's not even in honorable mention 🤨 I even expect him at least on top 3 or 4.
This list was going to be hard to narrow down altogether because there are so many good characters in this series! But for the most part, I agree with this list, just not the order. I also appreciate that you guys put all their married names.
My top 5 favourites of all time are Anna, Isobel, Matthew, Countess Violet and Tom. Barrow is also amazing for how complex and different he was. I also absolutely loved Mrs Hughes, Mrs Patmore, Edith, Mr Molesley Cora, Rose and sometimes Robert.
Why isn't Cora on the list? She's kind, beautiful, understanding, and sympathetic. She's also one of the only ones in the show that actually cares about the reputation of Downtown.

I second that! It was a good series, but Thomas and the first head maid dynamic kept me through the soap plots of the series.

Mary was very egoistic and cruel, specially to Edith. In my opinion she didn't deserved that happy ending, they all forgive her just too easy.
Edith had a great evolution from a needy girl to a strong independent woman and she was always kind
First off I dont know why this is on MSmojo, I thought we established everyone loves this show! Anyhow Im glad Edith made it on here she is my favorite excluding the Countess because Im sure she is everyones favorite.
You know something's wrong with this list when Tom is not there. You know you need another top 10. Downton has so many brilliant and really important characters such as Daisy, O'Bryan, Thomas, Isobel and Tom, of course. The development of all characters are amazing in this show. That's why I love it so much.

I’ll always love this show and genuinely enjoyed seasons 4, 5, and 6, but the first three will always be the best. I miss Matthew, Sybil, and even awful Ms. O’Brien. 😂
I like how you said Matthew is the gateway character to the audience because he was thrown into the aristocratic way of life. Arguably Branson carried that on from season 4 as he is also a fish out of water, more so than Matthew to be honest.

Jikes this is a tough one. To choose the best character is difficult. I love Violet Crawley, her sharp wit is the best. But I have this list of my own. The couples, upstairs and downstairs. Divided into those two groups. First the upstairs group: Edith & Bertie #4, Sybil & Branson #3, Cora & Robert #2 and in first place, yes you guess right, Mary and Matthew. Downstairs: Andy and Daisy at #4, Molesley and Baxter at #3, Elsie and Carson #2 and first: Anna and Bates. Now to choose the my favorite couple overall is, TaDa.... Anna and Bates!!!!! Why? Although most of these couples had their trials and tribulations and came out on top, Anna and Bates just couldn't at times catch a break. Their love and devotion for each other were tested over and over again. Yes, they kept secrets from one another but it were always for the other one's best interest. And though all of that they stuck together. Bates in prison, Anna did her utmost to get him out. Anna in prison, Bates were there for her. They are my favorite couple out of all. Sorry Matthew and Mary but you have to take second place in this one.

I think the whole of the main Downton abbey cast are the greatest characters! The all grew and evolved throughout the show and it wouldn’t be the same without them! Mary, Sybil, Robert, Cora, Edith, Tom, Anna, Bates, Carson, Mrs Hughes, Mrs Patmore, Thomas, Daisy, Mosley, Baxter, Matthew, Henry, Violet, Isobel, Rose, Andrew, I’ve probably forgotten someone😂 (excluding Mrs O’Brien)
Anna is my lovelyfrom the f character! She ist sweet, nice and always wow! I love her from the firdt to the last minute of Downton Abbey!

I just binge watched this series ever since I watched the movie.
My goodness, Tom Branson is a fave. His story arc was really good and he's not even in honorable mention 🤨 I even expect him at least on top 3 or 4.
This list was going to be hard to narrow down altogether because there are so many good characters in this series!

My top 5 favourites of all time are Anna, Isobel, Matthew, Countess Violet and Tom. Barrow is also amazing for how complex and different he was. I also absolutely loved Mrs Hughes, Mrs Patmore, Edith, Mr Molesley Cora, Rose and sometimes Robert.
I would love to see a spin off of Violet Crawley's life. We have had tiny glimpses.
I love Cora.
Why isn't Cora on the list? She's kind, beautiful, understanding, and sympathetic. She's also one of the only ones in the show that actually cares about the reputation of Downtown.

I hope Mary is not higher on the list than Edith or Sybil... I can't say I ever warmed up to Mary, she's arrogant, conceited, aloof, unnecessarily nasty Edith... she's considered the "prettier" one, yet she constantly tries to put Edith down! I didn't find her to be endearing in the slightest!
