To think Josh Travis went from Danza, To Glass Cloud & now Emmure. Amazing how this guy manages to jump from three bands in just ten years. But this dude is super talented. One of the best djent players ever honestly.
Unfortunately his skill really isn't demonstrated well here. Josh is actually a pretty good tech metal guitarist, but the fact that he plays large chords at such a low tuning means that most cameras aren't going to pick up the tone of his instrument well. Listen to Glass Cloud's professionally-recorded work, he's much cleaner and you can actually hear him on the records.
I don't get the hate here. His tone is shit here because of a 10w Ibanez amp, listen to any of his stuff and you will know he's a very impressive guitarist. Also his style plays on dissonance and groove, some like it some don't.
Saw them last night for the first time at the Metro in Oakland. I was super impressed! Dude absolutely shreds on guitar and seems like a really cool guy based on his stage presence alone. :)
Just my opinion here, shoot me if you disagree, I don't really care. I think the reason why is just because there's nothing really that impressive about his playing. The only thing that sets him apart is his tubing and how many strings he has. Aside from that his playing is shit. Did you see the "I've had three weeks of lessons and feel like a pro" type of unrhythmic, atonal stuff he was plucking out? I will give him credit though, his studio music is actually MUCH MORE appreciable.
+Hank Hill Hey sorry I actually never replied to your comment. Here is what I think. I do agree that the play he has shown in Glasscloud and this video are not amazing or really that difficult, but I think that its is due to his guitar and his lack of access to normal types of playing than what we are used to. He said himself that it is difficult to play just standard power chords and that he uses the string more as voices rather than individual notes as you would on a normal guitar. His atonal style of writing is due to his guitar. Not to mention the fact that his music is very experimental and so is the guitar. Josh Travis has been playing this style of music for years and I doubt he is bad player rather just experimental in the music that is shown here.
***** Fair point. Personally I'd say that it is indeed innovative, but not in a very interesting way. People have been playing 9 strings for a long time, actually. The same goes for open tunings.
I’m sad I didn’t discover The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza before they split. Easily one of my favorite metal bands partially due to Josh’s insane skill
He explained near the end of the video. Something along the lines of: he thinks of each string as a voice rather than something constrained to certain interval relationships between strings.
I give Josh props for playing such a ridiculous tuning. He's using the instrument the way he wants and it works, Glass cloud has some really great material. And of course the comment section is flooded with "Durr this tuning is fucking retarded, sounds like shit". But seriously why is it that every guitar video i watch they give the player some piece of shit amp?
I would of really liked to known the gauges he used for all the strings. I know for the 8th string he never has gone heavier than .074. I'm curious bc I have an agile 9 string 30 inch scale with 909 pickups. I cant find anything. I checked on his old askfm account and all I found was a set for his 27 inch 8 strings.
Someone who knows Josh Travis, PLZ TELL HIM TO DO A VIDEO DEMO OF THE HORIZON PRECISION DRIVE WITH HIS GEAR!! I have an 8 string 28 inch scale with blackouts, I love everything this guy does. He inspires me. I have the pedal I just want him to demo it with his 8 string and more specifically his 9 string.
Does anyone know where you find strings for such a crazy tuning anyway? I know I can't find any actual "set" of strings for eight or nine string guitars.
Kalium offers single strings all the way to 0.186" gauge which is absolutely massive. They also offer sets but I think they are more tailored to a more standard or drop tuning. But ya.
John Negri I think you start off with a standard 6 or 7 string set, and then you buy extra bass strings to complete the setup. I'm guessing it'll be a while before a string company has the foresight to market an 8 or 9 string set.
+Jenson Blanchard I just bought a 9 string last week from Agile. Guitar itself is phenomenal, but the 9-90 set they supply with it is so floppy even at standard C#. Go bigger. There's not many 9 sets out there, though I've found a 9-105 set from Ernie Ball. Going to try those out myself.
just because they can make notes in the same range as basses doesn't mean they are basses. A guitar is a guitar regardless of how many strings it has. If you play it through a bass rig then maybe it will start to sound like a bass but at the end of the day it's not.
30 inch scale bro. Compared to the 25.5 inch scale length of a strat the tension of the strings would be ridiculous. The top strings will need to be lighter or you're basically entering SRV territory.
***** There is no justification for playing a high end and unique guitar through a standard 10 watt amp combo. You can hear how crap the 9th sounds at 2:46. Josh is an amazing guitarist and probably the only one to use a 9th string but its a shame to see that guitar sound like that. Also, I dont need your fucking approval to know how good I am at playing the guitar. You probably don't even know how to play one, let alone to come up and match how I play.
I agree with Mr, Madhuram. personally, i would have just spared the amp and would play this thing solo, with no amplification what so ever, i would never demo or play a guitar on a combo amp EVER, once you go tube...you never look back. I'm not sure why someone would demo a fairly custom guitar on a tinny combo amp with EMG's no less..its escapes me lol.
BrainSeepsOut Oh sorry, I forgot that black people can't be racist. Claiming that ebonics isnt "fluent english" (whatever that means, in the twenty first century there are millions of competing types of english) is racist
To think Josh Travis went from Danza, To Glass Cloud & now Emmure.
Amazing how this guy manages to jump from three bands in just ten years.
But this dude is super talented. One of the best djent players ever honestly.
Josh is the king of brutal, dissonant heaviness. You really have to hear it in the context of the rest of the band.
50 Djent has the most bizarre tuning I've ever seen.
50 djent... Lmao
***** Thank you! To be fair, I should clarify I wasn't the first person to come up with 50 Djent.
Jordan Dansereau Mine is in BDADGBE
Johnny SideburnsX That's not bizarre; it's just Drop D with a low B as well.
Jordan Dansereau Yeah, but everything is in the key of B
Before you bash his playing, check out the amp at 3:16.
Man I still hate it
"nothing too gnarly... 30 inch scale" Hahaha righteo djent
i giggled at that part too lol
They seriously couldn't find a better amp for him to use?
His tracking for Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza blows this out of the water.
+Chris Hansen How is your ex-wife doing? xD

The fact that they gave this poor man a 15-watt practice amp to demonstrate the tone of a 9-string guitar in this video will always hurt me.
I miss DANZA. :(
Dude me too, listened to Danza IIII the other day... Damn I miss this band
Dude, that's all I've been listening to. Lol
Danza was so raw & heavy...they were wayyyy ahead of their time.
16 djents sharp

The lack of musical appreciation in the comment section is sad
Just my opinion here, shoot me if you disagree, I don't really care. I think the reason why is just because there's nothing really that impressive about his playing. shouldn't you be more worried about your propane?
***** I'm on break right now.

Very interesting, experimental, and creative stuff going on with this guy's guitar. I like it.
no comments about those dope ass custom glass cloud ebony wood plugs?!?!
Considering it’s a guitar video…
A bit late but I’d imagine they’re from Dads Woodworking
@@TheRottingtooth thank u so much! never too late lol
I’m sad I didn’t discover The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza before they split. Easily one of my favorite metal bands partially due to Josh’s insane skill
I discovered them last week from a friend who toured with them. Now I'm down the rabbit hole.
Crazy how much they changed their sound after Josh took over.
Still love the first 2 albums though
How the fuck did he come up with a tuning like that?
double drop a do actually some more bands who are in experimental metal or djent ^^
He explained near the end of the video. Something along the lines of: he thinks of each string as a voice rather than something constrained to certain interval relationships between strings.
That Ibanez amplifier hahaha.
50 DJENT
Haha!!!
"Just remember, you want to tune A to Z, and then Zflat."
Josh is awesome. He has awesome technique and is a great guy too. I wish him success.
I love when he says “There’s nothing to knarly about it really”, when literally everything about the guitar is knarly 😂.
Why have him play through such a shit amp?
I guess it was 'pretty much' the only amp they had handy?
My sentiments exactly. Thought the same thing
Hey I'm Josh Travis and I have two Oreos in my ears.
Riccardo D. Jajajaja
What is that fucking tone jesus christ
Look at the amp he's using lmao
1:56 give this guy credits. even without fingers he plays tappings and shit
That shitty amp and camera audio is doing his playing no justice.
I saw Glass Cloud with Josh on drums. That was really fucking cool.
"it's not about how low you can go" - a 9 string player
He is a genius
3:30 he plays Structuress Hydroplaning
no it's not. It's If He Dies, He Dies by Glass Cloud
Wait, did Josh use Randall Solid State amps?!
Tony D > GC
Tony D > GC > E
GC >
3:05 sounds like a house is collapsing
My god that thing sounds BEAUTIFUL lol

Does anyone know what camera they use for the guitar view?
The camera right by the pickups
Most likely a GoPro.
But ya.
Matthew Atta uw
Ya I honestly don't know what kind of brown note you'll produce with a 0.186". 10/11 strings maybe.
John Negri I think you start off with a standard 6 or 7 string set, and then you buy extra bass strings to complete the setup. I'm guessing it'll be a while before a string company has the foresight to market an 8 or 9 string set.
lol wheres the Axe Fx II ?! love josh
could I use a .009 on the top with a .90 on the bottom? Or would the tension be too much/little?
+Jenson Blanchard I just bought a 9 string last week from Agile. Guitar itself is phenomenal, but the 9-90 set they supply with it is so floppy even at standard C#. Go bigger. There's not many 9 sets out there, though I've found a 9-105 set from Ernie Ball. Going to try those out myself.
+AbsentProductions is it a 30" scale?
hes amazing guitarist he wrote most of the tony danza tapdance extravaganza albums
With these string those breakdown is gonna melt my face away....... [:[_________]
that was just... beautiful
Damn, the "I Dug a Grave" riff at the end hell yeah
i want his glass cloud plugs hahaha
one question? why didn't you show the whole guitar??
His plugs
I don´t get it, he tunes his 4th and 5th string in C, the same note or one an octave below the other?
Same octave, and less than a quarter step sharp to get crazy dissonance.
Wow... that's weird as fuck. Thanks for the explanation!
its for a chorus effect
Love this dude.
I would add a high A string and 27 frets
His tuning is pretty fucking sweet.
Awesome guitar player in my book
im getting a bit of pre "natural born killer" vibes at 3:52.
Josh...can you please play Danza songs for us so we can learn them? like "The Union" and "You Won't" and "Vicki Mayhem" and "Carroll 14 Wossman 7"? :)
My boy!
So he's 1 hole step lower than a 5-string bass? Now that's Dj000nt!
3:41 "What is my life" XD
How does he get that dry sound at the end?!?!?!?
3:06 "I just want to see the world burn"
"Nothin gnarly just 30 inch scale" lol
Can tell this dude was influenced by korn deftones and meshuggah thats why hes good
straight fire
give him a 10 string- he has clocked the 9!
A C that's 16 cents sharp? What's the purpose of that?
chorus
I wish I could think of a crazy tuning like that but I wouldn't have a clue how the hell to play it haha
That amp he's using tho😍😍😍😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤣👌
8 to.... 92....
GOD DAMN!!
Why does he have an oreo in his ear?
->nothing gnarly about it
>30" scale
are you serious
Do they even have a bass player?
yup,he only uses the brown note.
lol
Drew J. i find this comment far too funny lol
2:48 Okay I getcha *about 15 seconds later* wait wha..um...I'm lost
Just listened to their music... damn, thats some dark shit! xD
It's fuckin' great!
Joshua is the Ainsley Harriott of extended range guitars
sure... just A. hahaha I laughed so hard!
More strings, more butthurt haters on UA-cam.
sounds like a broken washing machine
they should give him a fucking metal for the tuning hes playing in!
They need to make a new name for 8 and higher stringed, cus they aren't baritones anymore, they're basses with guitar pickups.
there like guitars with basses on top.
I know.
sure dude ! sure
just because they can make notes in the same range as basses doesn't mean they are basses. A guitar is a guitar regardless of how many strings it has. If you play it through a bass rig then maybe it will start to sound like a bass but at the end of the day it's not.
Guitars with Seven strings and above are usually referred to as ERI's or Extended Range Instruments :)
He's also the guitarist for animals as leaders!!11
Djosh Travis
"Of Glass Cloud"
8 on the 1st string what!? i tried 8s on my fender strat and that shit is so light its crazy. didnt like em
30 inch scale bro. Compared to the 25.5 inch scale length of a strat the tension of the strings would be ridiculous. The top strings will need to be lighter or you're basically entering SRV territory.
Haha I use a 14 :')
Who needs a bass player anymore? LOL
It took a half a tree to make. LOL EPIC!
That sound quality though
You dudes will argue about anything .
"Nothing gnarly about it"
Uses 92 gauge strings!
😂

I've noticed that black dudes who play metal never speak ebonics, just fluent english. Says something about the genre eh :^)
I'm black actually
no names but he's correct in his saying. I'm glad he didn't use the term "talk white/black" line there is a standard.
Corban T. *like
literally shut the fuck up no black guy says ebonics lol

FIDDY DJENT!
wow
10 string
9 string Tunning
A,D,A,D,C#,C,G,Ab,E
That A0 on a 92 gauge has to be floppy af, like 11lbs of tension. How is there not like, insane amounts of string buzz?
@@kenny.m.olsen95 bro im Dead 🤣🤣💀👻..now that you mention it, that is a solid Question, I know I would probably use a 95?
Jaja the amp, bro
bc plugs represent!
