Great video! Josh Travis plays a lot! Tunings he described in the video: 8-string "drop-C with low F" tuning: (lowest) F1-C2-G2-C3-F3-G3-A3-E4 (highest) 8-string "drop-D" tuning: (lowest) D1-A1-D2-A2-D3-E3-A3-D4 (highest) 9-string "double drop-A" tuning: (lowest) A0-D1-A1-D2-C3-C3-G3-Ab3-E4 (highest)
When he explained his 9 string tuning my mind was blown. WHAT KIND OF BLACK MAGIC FUCKERY IS HE USING TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING THAT TRULY MENTAL?!?!?!?
The lace death bar pickups for 8-9 string is a pretty clear sounding passive pick for extended rage guitars, it picks up the very low to the very high end frequency very well with extreme clarity. You dnt need to go active for extended range
Please help? What is your set up and tuning when you play the brutal af Djent riff in Paul Bunyan and the blue ox at around 2:30 into the song? I've been obsessed with that riff and tone, simple but perfect and as brutal as it gets bro!
I'm in high school And I have an 8 string guitar. Im all into playing low, chugging music, experimenting with djent and all that good stuff that comes with extended range guitars. But with the music I do, I'm not even using the 1st-4th strings enough for me to have them on my neck all of the time. I see that there are these 9 string guitars out there and I've even heard about 10 strings. That'd be awesome for me to have a 9 or even a 10 string, but I wouldn't want them for the "extended" range, I would want them for the super low range. People would say to look into playing bass guitars, but they just don't have the same feel. My question is, "what if we could have a happy medium, or a hybrid of guitar and bass guitar for those that like to play low, but don't have interest in carrying a 10 string guitar around when they only need 5 or 6 of those strings?"
the point of companies producing extended range guitars is to have an extended range of notes. If you enjoy 6 strings, even if you're tuning as low as bass E, then stick with it, just make sure you have a long enough scale length to retain tension on notes that low (I'd recommend buying a baritone), and making sure your pick ups are suitable for the sound you seek and can pick up the lowest frequency note you'll be playing. i also can not stress how important it is to have your guitar properly set up for your tuning. If you buy a 6 string baritone factory set to B standard don't expect clarity at bass E without some intense adjusting to the truss rod, string saddle.
I know I'm 5 years later but if you are still looking go for really long scale baritone guitars there is a really good sounding squire vintage modified jazzmaster with a 30 inch scale that can go as low as a 9 with thick enough strings just get a 9 string string pack and use the bottom 6 strings or better yet go to kalium strings and get some guitar strings for said baritone
***** First of all, you're a dumb fuck who apparently doesn't understand the English language or you'd notice that no one here made it point to state that he's black. Second of all, I state how he sounds white, that has nothing to do with targeting and pointing out his skin color. Now, why is it that every time there's a youtube video there's that one idiot who comments all butthurt like? Try to understand simple words. Every fucking video, I swear.
i was curious on neck dimensions. they look like beautiful guitars and love the 30 inch neck but the strings look closer together on the 9 compared to the 8. do you have radius and widths at body and headstock? thanks
It's tuned as a bass octave. Same as a low A on a drop tuned 5 string bass. My 8 string's lowest string is usually a bass octave E, I tune it down to Aaeadgbe
I heard their quality fell through the floor for awhile when the master builder let a bunch of his new trainees handle some bigger name guitars, Keith Merrow got 2 of them about 2 years ago and told everyone he just couldn't get behind a product he didn't believe in. They sent him guitars with uncured necks and the frets ended up popping out/off them. They're supposed to be doing great again (quality control wise) but the damage from people like Keith and Josh leaving has already been done. Anymore when endorsed experienced people like DL(acacia strain) tell the world how great their S7's are most people pay no mind.
I tried an Ibanez 8-string at Guitar Center a couple of weeks ago. As a long-time 6-string player, I just can't get used to the feel of it, especially the neck width. Playing chords tripped me up too, because I'm so used to E being the lowest string. Maybe if I was playing a modern style of heavy metal, I would buy one of these guitars, but I really have no desire to jam on dinosaur fart riffs. I'd rather work on my technique and learning more licks and scales. Besides, how does a guitar like this sit within the mix of a full band? It must stomp all over the bass guitar and make things sound like mud! Thanks but no thanks!
6672rock That is a good opinion. Although, I definitely wouldn't mind giving these a test run myself. I think the next step would be a 7-string first to see if I like the added string and widened fretboard first.
Bass guitars are low frequency instruments and guitars are mid frequency instruments. Even guitars tuned super low, won't sound like a bass. Go practice your licks and scales and stop bitching on the internet.
Alex Al-Chalaby I wasn't saying his lack of knowledge makes him a bad guitarist, I was just asking if he knew theory. Lots of people are good guitarists or can get famous without knowing any theory (Shaun Morgan from Seether for example)

You don't mold to the instrument, its other way around. If anything instrument shouldn't be a barrier to some ones playing regardless of new ERG madness that has taken the companies.
fineliner306 . For good reason. Have you seen the prices of the instruments and the build construction? You wouldn't even have to play it to know those things were garbage. Hell even Keith Merrow is uses Schecter's more than his S7's, which get a bad rep (he apparently likes them now, maybe they're paying him good cash to play them) All of these brands are getting stupid. They offer the same shit for almost the same price that Ibanez, ESP, and Schecter are, except with an even way gaudier look than BC Rich could come up with. Rondo/Agile guitars seem to be the only instruments that are fairly priced, fairly well made, at a fairly affordable price. (unless you live outside North America, you may get a problem or two after it's done shipping)
Had an old band mate “ set up “ my legator and did a shit job at it. Gave it crazy back bow and then told me legator makes shit guitars 💀 dudes in a pretty successful band too which made me think he either got super lucky or is just an asshole lmfao
Great video! Josh Travis plays a lot! Tunings he described in the video:

9-string "double drop-A" tuning: (lowest) A0-D1-A1-D2-C3-C3-G3-Ab3-E4 (highest)
This dude is probably super cool to hang out with.
He is!! I hung out with him after the Chariot show in Philly. Such a nice dude. Let me play one of his custom 9 strings.
When he explained his 9 string tuning my mind was blown. WHAT KIND OF BLACK MAGIC FUCKERY IS HE USING TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING THAT TRULY MENTAL?!?!?!?
Josh travis loves D, you heard it here first
Can't forget the A.
"I love D, AND I love A."
-Josh Travis, 2013

Jude Misura it's one of his 8 string tunings. he plays 8 and 9
I know.
please release a performance video….
I like this guy. He actually knows what he's talking about. Lol
Josh loves D
open tuning means you play all the srtings open and it makes a chord
I finally understand what open tunings stand for 😄 thanks
He should do more play-through videos, I enjoy when he explains guitars

More likely just the Danza tuning which is (from low to high) E,B,E,B,E,F#,B,E

There are long scale baritone 6 string guitars. Fender Bass VI and some Telecasters. Otherwise, you are literally looking for a bass
I know I'm 5 years later but if you are still looking go for really long scale baritone guitars there is a really good sounding squire vintage modified jazzmaster with a 30 inch scale that can go as low as a 9 with thick enough strings just get a 9 string string pack and use the bottom 6 strings or better yet go to kalium strings and get some guitar strings for said baritone
my favorite version of open D5 tuning i got from Mark Tremonti's open D5:
low to high
ADADADD
I got so excited when the 9 string guitar I want one so bad now
Did anyone else think, "That's the whitest sounding black man I've ever heard."?
***** fuk yeah my niggah
***** you are literally my favourite person on youtube. your comments absolutely crack me up XD
ay leave my main man 50 djent outta this
***** First of all, you're a dumb fuck who apparently doesn't understand the English language or you'd notice that no one here made it point to state that he's black.

Because white people are the only one race allowed to sound educated. Smh Shut cho dumb ass up
i was curious on neck dimensions. they look like beautiful guitars and love the 30 inch neck but the strings look closer together on the 9 compared to the 8. do you have radius and widths at body and headstock? thanks
Man, I really wish ESP would give him the signature he deserves. A 7/8/9 string like with proper cockstocks would be killer.
So did he, that's why he's with Kiesel now 😅
What size are Josh's ears? They look to be about 32-35mm, but I can't really tell.
Hey Josh, how did you get emgs for a 9 string?
has any band tuned lower than double drop A? Black tongue is drop D one octave down
my friend tunes his 9 string to a# octave below.. sounds ridiculous
🔥🔥🔥🔥
The A on your 9 string would be A 16va right? 16 vassa, played two octaves down from A?
I don't know what 16va means, but "double drop A" refers to an A note that is equivalent to the lowest A on a standard 88-key keyboard, at 27.5hz.
It's tuned as a bass octave. Same as a low A on a drop tuned 5 string bass. My 8 string's lowest string is usually a bass octave E, I tune it down to Aaeadgbe
D-A-D-A-DEAD! lol
EMGs are SO muddy on 8 string schecters.
That's why you don't use EMG 808's lmao, use Seymour Duncan.
i use Seymour Duncan Pegasus
but Schecter sells like all their guitars with EMG.
+Witchcult Records thats so true my last band guitars had the crappiest tone on his schecter. probably spelled that wrong i dont care
so true, im glad my schecter 7 string came with seymour duncans instead of emg's
Yeah Schecter really needs to expand on pickup selection.
Repping Beheading Of A King? Wow.
so want to try one the these guitars
I need both of those axes!
so has everyone abandoned strictly 7 guitars or what?
***** Actually he has. He's with Washburn guitars now.
I heard their quality fell through the floor for awhile when the master builder let a bunch of his new trainees handle some bigger name guitars, Keith Merrow got 2 of them about 2 years ago and told everyone he just couldn't get behind a product he didn't believe in. Nathan Wisdom was this about legator or washburn or something? I heard about legator being very low quality.
Now I know its pronounced 'legator' like 'skelator', its gotten way cooler
josh, which string gauge do you use for your different tunigs?
All I've been able to find on his gauges is that on his primary 9 string tuning he uses 8-92. And he uses LaBella strings.
Okay thank you :)
Keep it up \m/
Hey Josh where is the best place to order strings for the 9 string ?
@@alleyaaron Kalium strings

Beheading of a King
The Skull jumper. Yeah, I recognize it
It was in a different colour the last time I saw it.
9 string emg x's?
He doesn't know what an open tuning is? I just discovered him and Glass Cloud, so I don't know, but does he know any actual music theory?
Why would that even matter? As long as he makes good music. Hendrix didn't know any music theory
Alex Al-Chalaby I wasn't saying his lack of knowledge makes him a bad guitarist, I was just asking if he knew theory. Lots of people are good guitarists or can get famous without knowing any theory (Shaun Morgan from Seether for example)
