  • Watch The Great Gabbo (1929) Full Movie on The Film Detective. Erich Von Stroheim, the man you love to hate, stars in perhaps the first film where a wooden dummy torments a ventriloquist. And if you needed proof that they don’t make ‘em like they used to, this psychological thriller from 1929 is livened up by a few musical numbers! Even Otto the dummy sings a couple of tunes, including ‘Icky’ (The Lollipop Song). It’s hard to resist a dummy who not only drives his owner crazy, but sings! The cinematography, by the way, was by Ira H. Morgan, who shot everything from Charlie Chan movies to Chaplin’s Modern Times!
Directors: James Cruze, Erich von Stroheim
    Writers: Ben Hecht, Hugh Herbert
Starring: Erich von Stroheim, Donald Douglas, Betty Compson

this is actually the first movie that ever referenced a scary doll. Everything after this has been inspired by Gabo! Is anyone in the comments old enough to know Night Gallery? There’s an episode on Night Gallery called “The Doll” another creepy one and this doll is actually the ugliest scariest thing i have ever seen!

I think alot of people would’ve gone to see this film purely to hear von Stroheim’s voice for the first time, that’s not to say the film is bad.

1929: von Stroheim was a more-than-capable actor, despite the accent. After the problems with "Greed" at MGM, he had to accept acting-only roles because no one would hire him as a producer or director.

One episode of Hollywood; a celebration of the American silent film talks about von Stroheim at length.

Holy fuck I’m 20 minutes in and I do not want to stop watching, I thought this would be dog shit because of the age, but everything is on point, especially the acting, and it shows a woman’s independence in willingness to break free of a tyrant, which I thought would be hard to find considering the time period

i mean its not nesesarily "women independance" since any gender at that time can quit their job specially if its abusive

@@arichan7599 I know it’s not like a femenist movie or anything lmao, but I did find it cool, how they showed a woman escaping an abuser, where at the time women might have been encouraged to stay in an abusive relationship, even today women are encouraged to stay with abusers, so I just thought it was cool that it gave an example of what’s bad, and what’s good, I know it’s not the entire point of the movie, but I just found it interesting
