Ana~ I really enjoyed this movie. It had it all. Just excellent. Here is one of my absolute favorites, also with Dan Duryea and Lizabeth Scott called: Too Late for Tears. If you haven't seen it, you are in for a real treat. Some of the finest acting, especially from Lizabeth Scott. 🍿

Been a Joan Bennett fan for probably 50 yrs since I first discovered her on late night in the 70s ...first as a Blonde and then with her darker tresses.. Please watch The Reckless Moment (49) perhaps her strongest performance in a Film Noir. Bennett's eldest daughter, Diana, said she was very much like the character "Lucia" in the film. It's a riveting performance that should have earned an Oscar nod. RM has since become a Film Noir Cult Classic too.
I wouldn't say "divine" . It was a sad and tragic movie from start to finish. Lol. Entertaining in a dramatically unpleasant way but "divine"? No. Good acting by the cast too.
Wow ! Came here after watching the brilliant "M" from 1931 and the not-so-brilliant "Human Desire" from 1954. One of the most remarkable films I have ever seen. The cinematography is incredibly good. Edward G Robinson is outstanding as Chris, a decent, kind, talented but gullible man who gets led astray by two evil petty criminals. He often played gangsters and bad guys but in reality he loved art, did his own paintings and spoke seven languages. I found myself rooting for him, wishing he would see the light about nasty Kitty. Chris shows how loneliness can lead a person to find unsuitable partners, as was the case with both nagging Adele and Kitty. Dan Duryea and Joan Bennett are also excellent, as are all the minor characters. Chris sort of gets away with murder but is plagued by guilt and living on the streets, so he too is being punished. Fritz Lang clearly had a dim view of humanity and a particularly low opinion of women. One good deed takes place near the end of the film, in which Chris's life is saved. I was also impressed with how well the film recreated the mid 1930s when it is set, although it was shot in 1945. This is a remarkable film, quite unlike anything else I have seen, 10 out 10 for me. Thanks for uploading it.
What a movie. I've never seen an ending like this before. Who is the good guy? Who is the villain? Who do we route for? What do we learn? Ultimately, it's just that humans are powerfully emotional and fragile creatures. We're tragically selfish, easily manipulated and ruled not be logic, but by the moment. The moment. What is truly more timeless than moments of great intensity of feeling? And in the end, how often do these movements lead to something so regretful? This is story telling.

As a serious artist, I have long been troubled by the bad art that is usually shown in movies about art. This is one of those fortunate exceptions. The paintings shown are by the American artist John Decker, who did not receive recognition as a fine artist during his lifetime, but his works are now highly regarded.

Among Hollywood stars who commissioned him to paint their portraits were Errol Flynn, Greta Garbo, and John Wayne.
Twelve paintings created for the film by John Decker were sent to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City for exhibition in March 1946. My favorite of Decker's is the John Wayne portrait. (See wikipedia)

Joan Bennet is absolutely stunning. She exudes class, femininity, and confidence simultaneously. I first discovered her on the Gothic 60's soap opera "Dark Shadows"....What an incredible woman..

I have to argue that well-made colour films can grab texture and mood very, very beautifully - But B+W films, well-shot, have exactly the beauty and subtlety that you describe. I have always loved B+W films, and find it pathetic when people refuse to watch a movie just because it isn't in colour.

These are truly the movies that keep the interest of the viewer and after the movie is over you are still thinking and talking about it. It all comes down loneliness, fantasy, love, greed, deceit, lies, insecurity, and 2 lazy people who wanted what did not belong to them. A trusting, lonely old man who wanted a young woman to love him. He was an artist, did some beautiful paintings during his acting career. This are the movies Worthwhile waiting for.... Thank you.

Wonder if it's a good thing (watching movies). So much images collected an' stuck deep our brain that shalt represent a heavier burden tae get rid off the day we'll ask ourselves the fundamental question : "Who am I ?"
Classic film noir, very noir. It’s rather a bizarre plot, based on unlikely circumstances, but the characters, the dialogue and the acting are compelling. Joan Bennett is divinely gorgeous, Dan Duryea is a most convincing wide boy (reminds me of a boyfriend I once had) Adele is a seriously raucous old harpy and Edward G. Robinson holds it all together with his superlative portrayal of pathetic, downtrodden sensitivity and thwarted aspirations.
Ah bon ? Toi, tu trouves Joan Bennett belle ?
I never really liked Edward B Robinson but this movie has changed my mind! He was brilliant! I was entranced by his performance!!! I know it is just the movie but I actually feel that those two got what they deserved!!! Loved the movie!!! Love the artwork!!
Great director ‘Fritz lang’ who made these two films wanted ‘Scarlet street’ to have the ending that ‘The woman in the window’ didn't, ie the dream, he did not like the cop out ending. Both great films, not a lot between them.
I discovered this old movie about 30 years ago. Man it's good. Dan Duryea is great in it. .."What's that cat say?? He's lying!!" " lazy legs..." I still have that same orange box cover vhs tape.
Sooooo true! Intelligent, interesting and mesmerizing without constantly using bad language to make a point. Today most movies have language that’s so repetitive and slow paced. I love the old movies snappy dialogue.
Robinson was a brilliant dude, he spoke languages. Love the sets, the pace, the old styles from my granddad's era and the cigars and cigarettes have mercy
i feel like this is a masterpiece but also the saddest movie i've ever watched. It's almost painful to see what is done to Chris, from his passion being squashed by his own wife, to being manipulated by Kitty who was already being manipulated by Johnny, and then having a "safe" place for his art (his passion) to having that ripped away from him when his art is being sold for money by kitty. All of this made even sadder by the fact that Chris knew in his intuition that Johnny was a bad person, and if only he had given it more thought before he might have seen what was happening.
I agree! It was almost traumatizing to watch, and then I laugh to myself because I know it didn't really happen. The crazy thing is, a modern movie with hd and all the effects can't inspire that inner conversation like this old b&w
After Edward set up the first husband, he should've thought, "Whew! Dodged a bullet", tipped his hat and kindly walked away. Extra rare is that Chris got away with murder. That rarely happens in films, even today.
Friz lang also did westerns and 3 come to mind are the sequel to Jesse James 1939 is the return of frank james with Henry Fonda also western union with randy Scott and my favorite of his westerns called Rancho notorious with the great Marlene Dietrich. All excellent.
I think I mostly watch or listen to these old movies whilst trying to fall asleep. I think it's the old time sound effects like train whistles or ship horns. And I love the black and white.
@@prettyrebel3001 Just two here, though the first was some ten years ago, and I liked it so much. I'm watching more films than ever while this COVID-19 confinement lasts. Stay safe and keep well.

Oh', the irony is palpable for everyone in the story , especially poor Edward.G . Fritz Lang was always a great director, here he starts almost light hearted, but then goes to that dark place (which is his custom), and leaves all in ruin. He's master at it, and this movie is a gem. Joan Bennett is gorgeous, and Edward.G Robinson is fantastic, as always. Thanks CCC for showing this classic, love it ! Bob. G
My Mother watches all of these old black and whites. This one came on television the other day and I had to come find it. My goodness, Kitty, Chris and Johnny are spectacular!!! Superb acting!
Fun fact: When Robinson and Bennett go into Tiny's bar, we hear 'Melancholy Baby', which would remind any trouper of the tradition of drunk hecklers demanding it. That originated in 1912 when the writer Damon Runyon, a notorious soak, was in a club and yelled all through a singer's act that he wanted to hear 'Melancholy Baby'. The singer he interrupted was William Frawley, the future Fred Mertz of 'I Love Lucy'. The song's lyrics comment on Bennett's state, Robinson's inchoate wish to have someone simpatico to take care of, and (to those who know the tradition) the danger of disruption of regular life. 'Melancholy Baby' became almost as big an object of dread inviting showbiz disaster as saying the true name of 'the Scottish play'.
Just watched this last night. For me one of the best old movies ever. And I've seen a lot! From silent movies to golden age Hollywood classics. This is exactly the kind of movie that I need in my life.
In a word: brilliant. Joan B is up there with Bette, Olivia, Joan and Barbara. No one can play a heel (with charm) better than Dan D. Edward G anchors the entire enterprise.
One.of Lang‘s very best American films & it does not cop out like the denouement of THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW. Harsh as SCARLET STREET is on its protagonist it plays its tale out with an honest inevitability.
I love to watch olden age classic movies... Everything in those days is genuine and pure... When I was a teenager during late 80s and 90s everything we get we received it genuinely, things are different, we gt to knw and learn the things with satisfaction but now after internet and smart phone and technology advance the things are change alot... nothing is that precious like in those days... I missed 80s and 90s 😢😢
That was excellent! I was about to say "That was great fun", then it took a darker turn and it became comedy with Dostoevsky for an ending! Very good film, good actors and script. Thanks.
this was a great movie, very easy to follow and well put together. and the characters were believable. the film was made in 1945 and I just saw it for the first time in 2020. I enjoyed it so much I had to watch it again.

I never tire of watching this film with Joan Bennet and one of the biggest cads of all time., Dan Duryea plays his usual rounder role to the tea,Joan Bennet attractive as always shines in her own intomitabe way.And directed by Fritz Lang .... a treat to watch.!
Fantastic! I'd never heard of this film. The script seems to have been written specifically for Robinson, since he was a serious art collector in his real life, and a painter himself. I wonder if perhaps he commissioned the screenplay? The two nasties, Kitty and her vile, abusive fiance, wow, I really came to despise them - very good performances and clever writing made them truly despicable. The direction, lighting, music and editing were excellent, but of course, Fritz Lang was at the helm. This film deserves much more recognition in my opinion. It was a blast to watch. Thanks so much for finding and posting it!
The painting is a metaphor for being a lost soul amongst soulless drones, to put it bluntly. Kind of like Alex liking Ludwig Beethoven in a Clockwork Orange. It's a story of a good person missing opportunities for being too stuck in the rules of this world. If you don't understand you're just soulless yourself...over 95% of the population is
Around the 4:40 mark the "superstition" referred to is the 3rd cigarette (or cigar) to be lit by the same match superstition. Commonly known as "Three on a match" , it dates from at least around World War I, possibly earlier. The thought was that if there was a group of men smoking at night, an enemy sharpshooter would first be alerted to the location of the men by the first cigarette (or cigar) lit, the 2nd lit would allow the sharpshooter to hone his aim, and upon the lighting of the 3rd smoke, the he would take the shot. In other words, misfortune befalls the third person to light his cigarette with the same match.
Ce vieux film en noir et blanc est excellent. Le rôle principal est tenu magistralement. L'histoire est sombre et cruelle. Un beau moment de cinéma. Merci pour ce partage.

You took the words right out of my mouth , sir ! Stupendous movie !
These are truly the
movies that keep
the interest of the
viewer and after the
movie is over you
are still thinking
and talking about it.
It all comes down
loneliness,fantasy,
love,greed,deceit,
lies,insecurity,and
2 lazy people who
wanted what did not
belong to them.
A trusting,lonely old
man who wanted a
young woman to love
him.
I have see real live
cases as such,except
no murder involved.
Great cast, what an
actor,little in stature
he was,but tall he
was as an ACTOR.
He was an artist,
did some beautiful
paintings during his
acting career.
This are the movies
Worthwhile waiting
for....
Thank you.
Lang is a great director. The woman in the window by him starring the two stars is great.
@@christenasmalls6118Yes, both of these Lang pictures are outstanding. They stand up to countless viewings.
Joan Bennett is my favorite actress! I saw her first on Dark Shadows when I watched it every day after school. She was still beautiful and graceful in the late 60’s!
Rita: Kate Jackson from Charlie's Angels was on Dark Shadows as well.
Excellent print of a classic film by a master director.
Edward G. Robinson is among the finest actors to ever appear in motion pictures.
I love classic films. They seem so natural and well acted.!
Joan is gorgeous in this film and Dan always plays a rat better then any other actor. And of course Robinson is class.
Ah bon ? Tu la trouves belle, toi ? Moi pas. Elle est d'une beauté commune.

Surprisingly good movie - great twists & turns in the tale - brilliant acting & a frighteningly creepy ending with loud haunting music dominating the scene as the Kitty self-portrait picture is being carried out of the painting gallery - Wonderful Stuff - my rating 9/10
Since almost the beginning of time people love to hear stories . It stimulates your mind your imaginations far better than any special-effects Hollywood can come up with ..

Wonder if it's a good thing (watching movies). So much images collected an' stuck deep our brain that shalt represent a heavier burden tae get rid off the day we'll ask ourselves the fundamental question : "Who am I ?"

Wow. That was incredible! They simply don’t make movies like this anymore. So sad, so inventive. A masterpiece....
Snuck up on me too, ditto.
But how can you be sure this masterpiece was really directed by Fritz Lang, after watching this movie?
the ending has German Expressionism written a over it
Great movie! Little wonder I grew up the way I did. I always watched these noir flicks as a kid, and now, at 66, watching them again! Thanks!
One of my favourite films - Lang was a genius.
One of my favorites too!
You took the words right out of my mouth!
Ah bon ? Toi, tu trouves Joan Bennett belle ?
It's not bizarre, unless you're a soulless drone just passing through life. This is a very timeless story
This film is a masterpiece F.Lang is brilliant the characters are so real.
One of those genuine classical masterpieces.
Excellent performances by Edward G. Robinson and Dan Duryea.
I never really liked Edward B Robinson but this movie has changed my mind! He was brilliant! I was entranced by his performance!!! I know it is just the movie but I actually feel that those two got what they deserved!!! Loved the movie!!! Love the artwork!!
See him in "Key Largo" with Bogart...!
See him in DOUBLE INDEMNITY 😊
Watch
The woman in the Window...and
The Stranger😊😊😊
@miaflyer2376 😯 oh yes he is magnificent in Key Largo, ...the best character in the movie.
Watch Edward G. In ALL MY SONS with Burt Lancaster
What a great movie! Just as good as "The Woman in The Window". As usual, great performance by Edward Robinson and Dan Duryea.
Just watched The Woman in the Window. About to watch this. Looking so forward to it.
Think I like this one better. They are both great.
@@Edward-jn5pl I agree. Scarlet Street has a better plot. And yet, they are both excellent.
Great director ‘Fritz lang’ who made these two films wanted ‘Scarlet street’ to have the ending that ‘The woman in the window’ didn't, ie the dream, he did not like the cop out ending. Both great films, not a lot between them.
Don't forget Joan Bennett.
Thank you for posting this film. I have never seen before. Another example of the range Mr. Robinson had.
story1951 this film shows what an excellent character actor Mr Robinson was. Many actors play themselves.
I discovered this old movie about 30 years ago. Man it's good. Dan Duryea is great in it. .."What's that cat say?? He's lying!!"
" lazy legs..." I still have that same orange box cover vhs tape.
Lazy Legs and Funny Face! 😂
A great actor and a beautiful actress. Enjoyed watching the movie.
This is a fantastic movie, great acting, chemistry, directing, script, storyline and atmosphere. Thanks for uploading.
There is nothing like these movies the plots and storylines without any need for special effects except good camera work is incomparable. 👏👏👏❤
Sooooo true! Intelligent, interesting and mesmerizing without constantly using bad language to make a point. Today most movies have language that’s so repetitive and slow paced. I love the old movies snappy dialogue.
Personnage naïf et triste fin
Excellent movie. The writer were brilliant in the 30's and 40's. I could watch them all night. The acting was the top of its level.
Spoiler. Big time.
I shouldn't have read this before watching the movie 😂😂😂
After Edward set up the first husband, he should've thought, "Whew! Dodged a bullet", tipped his hat and kindly walked away. Extra rare is that Chris got away with murder. That rarely happens in films, even today.
Well said--a poignant masterpiece.
Thanks a million, I really enjoyed this. Edward G. Top man, top actor.
I got goose pimples at the end. Fritz Lang was an absolute genius.Thank you so much for sharing this masterpiece.
Friz lang also did westerns and 3 come to mind are the sequel to Jesse James 1939 is the return of frank james with Henry Fonda also western union with randy Scott and my favorite of his westerns called Rancho notorious with the great Marlene Dietrich. All excellent.
Je suis tout à fait d'accord avec toi.
You need to find something better to do with your empty life.
I think I mostly watch or listen to these old movies whilst trying to fall asleep. I think it's the old time sound effects like train whistles or ship horns. And I love the black and white.
What a movie! Edward G. Robinson was a great actor. Thank you for posting this gem.
Edward G. Robinson really surprised me in this one! Terrific Film from Fritz Lang.
This is one of the greatest movies ever made.
It's a nice little noir drama with the always evil Dan Duryea and the sexy moll Joan Bennet but I wouldn't go that far.
It's one of best films, albeit underated, by the master of noir Fritz Lang
@@prettyrebel3001 Just two here, though the first was some ten years ago, and I liked it so much. I'm watching more films than ever while this COVID-19 confinement lasts. Stay safe and keep well.

Fabulous classic drama ! I watch this every few years ! And enjoy it every time , THERES nothing in this world than the classic dramas ! Thanks for sharing !
Superb acting!
this is one of my favorite films. I watch it over and over and never get tired of it. Classic films are the best.
Fritz Lang un genio del Cine, esta película la he visto como 4 veces. Gran Película!!
Thank you for the fun fact! I had no idea. This is such a great film! 👍
Brilliant Masterpiece. E.G. Robinson is a Legend & Joan Bennett was drop dead Gorgeous in this role. Thanks
Robinson is so different in style for this character than what i'm used to from him. He really nails it. Thank you for the free movie!
Edward G Robinson one of the best actors in the world , this movie one of the greatest!😍🙌🏾❤️
Also, Woman in the window, classic, same actors. Thank you so much
That was excellent!
I saw this for the first time on here in 2023 , and for me it was an instant classic . One of the greatest movies I've ever seen .
Joan Bennett looking very pretty in this and acting her socks off. Edward G Robinson is a very good lead too. Great print!
Great plot, great acting, great timing, great b/w photography - a pleasure to watch!

I never tire of watching this film with Joan Bennet and one of the biggest cads of all time., Dan Duryea plays his usual rounder role to the tea,Joan Bennet attractive as always shines in her own intomitabe way.And directed by Fritz Lang .... a treat to watch.!

what a good movie, Dan Duryea is such an underrated actor.

No swearing in these old movies, and acting is superb.
Fantastic film . These actors could really act .
If you don't understand you're just soulless yourself...over 95% of the population is
@tim weatherill I like your profile picture. Where'd you get it?
Thanks.
I didn't know that, thanks!
Oui, tu as parfaitement raison. C'est ce que je disais dans les tranchées en 1914 à mes collègues dans les tranchées....
