An insanely, egocentric ventriloquist takes advice from his wooden dummy to win the love of beautiful a dancer who is in love with another! - Фільми й анімація
I can't believe this was from 1929, I had assumed the sound would be more primitive. Mr. Von Stroheim was perfectly cast as an arrogant narcissistic ventriloquist. Thank you for posting!
Thanks for watching PizzaFLIX
I thought it was surprisingly good. Stroheim was great - and the musical numbers with Donald Douglas and Margie Kane were superb.
Von Stroheim was a genius far ahead of his time.
I find it fascinating watching these very old films - it's like watching ghosts perform.
A fabulous performance for 1929!
“You get out of life what you put into it!”
Betty Compson... more than wonderful
A Narcissist direct by a Narcissist: this adds up to an eerie Drama Film!
Wow!, that Gabbo was full of himself!, I'm glad Marie got away from him!..
His voice is exactly what you'd expect if you'd never heard his voice; a blend of American, & Austrian.
Wow! Great film with great performances. Thank you for posting this!
Hadn't seen this since I was a little girl.
The actors and musical numbers are great in this movie.
Loved it.
Erich Von Stroheim's mental beak down at the climax was very well done and real sad.I just couldn't help but cry a little at the end.Poor Gabbo. The moral of this movie is so true. You only get out of life what you put into it.
Thanks for this HQ version.
The Great Erich Von Stroheim

He was a lovely pervert (better actor than director - "The Man You Love to Hate"). urging his actors to engage in orgies before the shooting commenced. What a sweet man! See the real truth in 'Hollywood Babylon' (1972) - if you can find it! My best bet is iOffer.com. Also: His "von" was just as fake as Lars "von" Trier's, Josef "von" Sternberg's - and Claus "von" Bülow's...

@@Ramblin-Man You will not find much of the truth about anything in Kenneth Anger's books.
Stroheim was the real deal: * * * * *'s
Many thanks for sharing.
Erich Von Stroheim in his talkie debut as the egotistical ventriloquist Gabbo. Gabbo is such a miserable person and his dummy is so sweet. Gabbo can make the dummy talk while drinking, eating or smoking. But is it Gabbo really talking or is the dummy doing the talking? The film has some great musical and dance production numbers. Majorie Kane, who was one of many Helen Kane impersonators, is delightful. Betty Compson plays Gabbo's assistant who is driven away because of his cruelty. The film was a bit slow at times, but if you like your ventriloquist to be psycho, you'll love The Great Gabbo.
Thank you for telling the Contents!
Looked like the dummy was talking.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie
Creepy Goodness. Thanks.
This movie was shown on public televlsion some thirty years ago, but had some of the music numbers edited out probably to make it fit into a shorter time slot. It was nice to see the whole thing. I wish it could be colorized--great stage numbers!
yes , I remember seeing it then 30 years ago and never saw it again. It was a great picture.
In fact part was shot in 'Multicolor', one of several two-strip processes used to bump up musicals in early talkie days. Like most such, the color negatives have gone missing.
The dance routine used the effects of contrasting black and white better than the crap that comes out of Hollywood now in Color!
Otto was no dummy :)
I had to feel a bit sorry for ol' Gabbo. He had a lot self-confidence. I'll say that for him!
Besides, if I've had this thought this just once, I've thought it 1,929 times: It's always so
much easier to criticize someone else, than to criticize yourself.
Erich von Stroheim seems so modern and realistic.
I loved the spiderweb performance, from: 1:06:00
Wow, he played a similar role 16 years later in The Great Flamarion and again to a lesser extent 5 years after that in Sunset Boulevard.
Is this the only type of character he portrayed? He does it well.
When Mary walked out on Gabbo, and they looked to see where she was, they looked in the wrong direction, she went in another direction
A genius
Can't go wrong when there's music by Paul Titsworth and King Zany. Love the line flub at 1:18:02, the words were written on his glove?!?
von Stroheim smokes too much
Betty Compson was Oscar nominated for The Barker.
Good movie, great musical numbers,,,,one of my first video tapes( Beta format). Did feel sorry for Eric von Stroheim's character
The blondie in the beginning reminds me of Bette Davis.
Seeing the guy at 9:40 looks like Stan Laurel
German science is the best in the world
Where are the color sequences?
Who was the beauty?
Did the Simpsons borrow this ?
Peter Maxwell Yes, most of the early Simpsons is their take on popular culture or classic films like this.
One serious thing I thought was wrong throughout film is it was made to depict dummy as 'almost life like', talking by himself, e.g., like at dinner table in restaurant, they made him appear as almost real yet it went no where in the film, i.e., film did not suggest dummy was lifelike yet portrayed him as such in film? What are viewers suppose to understand that Gabbo was so great he made dummy talk while he was eating? Usually if dummy is suppose to be life like it is portrayed that way in film to audience?
I think the idea was that Gabbo really was that good. Yes, he could eat, drink, or smoke and still make the dummy "talk" (or at least give the illusion that he was eating, drinking, or smoking all the while . . . probably not doing so in a normal fashion, that is, not actually swallowing or breathing in during the dummy's "talk"). If you look at about 3:00 in the movie, you'll see Gabbo pick up a device that he squeezes to make the dummy's mouth move. It's attached to the dummy by a long tube, which would explain how Gabbo can sit at a table with the dummy sitting on the other side and still make its mouth move while making it "talk."
Too bad Otto does not have a place in the Smithsonian like Charlie McCarthy does.
...politics.
There's two sides to everyone at 36:54
'The Great Gabbo' came 48 years before Richard Attenbororogh's excellent 'Maniac', with Anthony Hopkins as the murderous (?) ventriloquist and Swedish babe Ann-Margret.
www.imdb.com/title/tt0077889/ The Great Gabbo (the doll) also appeared in both 'The Simpsons' and 'Family Guy'...
'Magic', not 'Maniac'. Michael Redgrave was the definitive mad vent in 'Dead of Night'.
In some ways better then Little Hugo........Ho No
Imagine that: The Great Gabbo was released a whole 10 years before the infamous Wizard of Oz;
it's 10,000 times more entertaining; 10,000,000,0000 times more realistic; and it's also in genuine
B&W -- instead of very phony-looking, hand-painted color.
Yeah nobody remembers the Wizard of Oz. The Great Gabbo is the most famous film in your alternate universe.
