Good to see others do this. Seems the pan narrowing kit has improved. After 4/5x years i had to get pan welded again as cable lock cable for front axle got pinched between axle housing and pan. Personally I would prefer new flywheel or at a minimum run a dial indicator on flywheel to check runout (we screwed up ours by letting our flywheel to adaptor bolts protrude through washers under the heads fixed it.
I am worried about the fly wheel and starting holding up over time. We still nee to figure out a tach too. I really want one working on this. The oil pan kit is improved. In the last year i think. Hope we lined it up good enough. That slot in the front is a good guide for how it needs to sit in there
Great video, really helpful and informative. I did the same swap in my ‘99 and in the few thousand miles I’ve put on it, I’ve chewed through 2 throw out bearings and I’ve got it apart looking at the pilot bearing now. Issues aside, I love the feel of an om617 in a Jeep. It’s such a cruiser. What ever gears my Jeep has, 5th gear is pointless. I was told 4.11s are a must if you want to see 5th gear. I’m on a 3” lift and 33’s. Love to see more progress on this build in the form of another video
Thanks !! I had 33’s on my 02. 5th was pointless. Terrible. I am hoping to get this done before the snow flies here. I really am eager to put to the test. I was told the jeep needed to be minimal 4 inch lift to make the kit work on my YJ. Dont know if its the same for the TJ. I hope it stays together a while for me. But any problems and repairs afterwards will be posted also
The pan mod is absolutely needed. Never meant for a 4x4 but the pan mod kicks it back narrows it and its fitting good. Part three in the next month this is at last almost done.
I'm in the planning stages to do this to my CJ-8. It's a little daunting to see that the adapter plate still needs machining/hacking to make it work and that even then you had to MacGyver a bunch of stuff. I'm enjoying your video; it's giving me a lot to think about!
Nate at mercedes diesel 4x4 has been extremely helpful to us. Great guy. There is always troubles. This whole conversion can be labeled Macgyvering in my opinion. ;-)
Thanks allot. The winter has slowed us down. But bot stopped us. We hope to have my jeep on the road in a week. Then i can finally finish up the videos.
how well has the ax5 held up, I heard after a couple hard pulls, the high rpms from the OM617 creates too much inertia in the transmission causing it to spin and eventually tear itself up.
I love the project. I want this engine in something besides a tedious Mercedes someday. I hoped your rear main seal would hold up since you didn't mention replacing it, but heard that it leaked. It is gonna be a good feeling when you get it done. Like climbing Everest or something. Waiting patiently for the next video! Subbed
Highly appreciate it. There will be a lot on this after it is done and two more videos to come until it is done. Part 3 will fill you in on that headaches with oil leaks in general.
I did this to my jeep about 2 years ago and the pan narrowing kit they sent me was shaped a little different. It had 45 degree angles instead of 90 degree angles your kit has. I think yours has a little more room.
Its been redesigned recently. It does seem much better than the one they show in their how to youtube video. Did you weld yours yourself or get it prefab ?
I finally drove the jeep a little. A few things to work out and finish. One thing to re do. And it should be done soon. Then i can work on the video. Thanks for the patience. It is coming soon.
I would of not welded that flywheel... the amount of heat would of been enough to warp it. Flywheels for manual transmissions are very picky. it could actually mess up your crank if not center right or surfaced right. theres a reason it has that many bolts that need to be torqued to spec.
Engine would shake that oil pan mod until it cracks , that is a very strong oil pan casting it never would match the weld to that thin box ….. just a prediction … I may be wrong ...
We are working on it. We had allot of problems with oil leaks. And shitty winter. It will take two parts the rest of the build. Then the oil leaks we had to fix will be separate videos. The rear main seal was a nightmare for DIY mechanics.
@@nate5388 however, i think the aluminum gets clogged up into the pores of the cutoff wheel and if you cut steel with it after cutting aluminum it could explode the cutoff wheel
Well. The pan is is aluminum. So its not sparking like steel would. Also. The cutting wheels are stainless steel that are super thin. Not to be found at harbor freight. You have to get them from a welding supply shop. Maybe 40 thousandths. We will touch in then in the next video.
Thanks allot for the interest. We had a little trouble. Mostly with line ups. Plus working in the cold was something we didnt do much of. I have a video on my phone here where i drove the jeep a little bit into the garage. We have a few minor things to work out. A rear main seal. And it will be done. I will start editing the video the day i drive it home. Its close. Thanks so much for the interest. Its very cool. Not much longer i promise.
Right on thanks for the response. I love your videos, very informative. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. I'm most likely going to do this swap on my 90 YJ.
Jeff Rausa thats what mine is. 90. Amc made it Chrysler sold it. We are fixing some oil leaks this week and putting the engine back in. If its not leaking its done. Thanks for the compliment. Its appreciated.
They are coming. Its been a busy winter for both me and kirk. The jeep is almost done and ready to be on the road. Then i will be editing the video together. Im feeling very impatient to get the project done as well. I really appreciate all the interest.
Kirk the living legend Amazing the first time I ever seen him wear a pair gloves
Mircles are real. Those gloves keep grubs out.

Looks awesome... Can't wait to see it finished... Have a great day...
Thank you. I cant wait either. It is getting close to being finished.
Man! You got to love jeep!!! Good job sir!
I love this project. I have both a 1981 and a 1984 Mercedes 300 SD, ... and want to put one of these engines into a Jeep Wrangler.
Its a great engine. Except for the rear main seal. Those are the ideal years to use. Some improvements in power.

Looks really great. Looking to do this swap. On my 06 LJ, thanks for your in depth videos. Can't wait to see it running
Interesting to hear that 4in lift as recommended is still not enough clearance to clear the front diff.

Glad to see you got it balanced .I seen the weld and though wow .grate work guys looking good
Love the oil pan work Damn good job

Michael Earley *great
A Guy Named Alfons *a lot

Its all good so far. 8k miles on it. Off roading. Highway speeds. No troubles. I don’t exactly run it too hard with high rpms.

@@AlfonsLC I bought the kit and and made the adjustments on the pan. A friend at work helped me weld it. At the time, I didn't know how to tig weld.
Upload please you guys are doing awesome

The bytheway machine I like it !!
never seen someone make welding an aluminum cast pan look easy
It came out great. I will pass on the compliment

It was surfaced and balanced at a performance engine shop. Either way. Youre right. But kirk just went and did it while i was away. But so far so good
You guys are bad ass! 👉🤜
I think that flywheel going to have some off balance
We had it neutral balanced. Its fine.
Engine would shake that oil pan mod until it cracks , that is a very strong oil pan casting it never would match the weld to that thin box ….. just a prediction … I may be wrong ...
Well. The kit has allot of success. So all i can say is its worked for allot of other people. We will see how it goes.
Have you worked on it anymore? Have a great day...

@@AlfonsLC Good to hear you're still working on it but bad all the problems... It'll work out in the end just hang in there... Goodluck...
Its almost over. The leaks are all fixed. Then its just putting it back together. I have driven it already. Thanks for hangin in there.
wow
What kind of magic cutoff wheel is that that isn’t sending sparks everywhere?
cutting aluminum is not sparky like steel
MrMrsregor thanks!

where did you get the allen key bolt for the flywheel
Mercedes Diesel 4x4 .com’s kit.
Dude where the new videos?

Project completion date 2022
Maybe 11-22
I would add a def tank and burn chamber
Like my Jetta. Because tripling the fuel consumption rate is better for the air.
Flywheel balancing?
Yes. After modifying it. Even in small ways. Its good to check that it is balanced the it doesn’t wobble as it spins.
Could I do this with a bmw 4.4i motor???
Not with this kit or this company. They only make om617 conversions
Best German diesel motor ever made Deutz. That’s what you need to put in your Jeep
