I’m kinda new to the whole mopar scene but it feels like the mopar big blocks over shadow the 318 in popularity. Kinda sad cause the 318 is a great engine.
@@hairlesscat6458 The 318 was of the same engine family as the 340 or 360. Chrysler put that engine in all it's cars. I don't think there ever was a factory high performance 318. It is the same dimensions as the 340/360. The 340 was designed for performance and was one of the best ever made. The 360 is 42 cubes bigger than the 318. More cubes = more potential HP potential. It was easy to overlook the 318. The 318 was a very popular motor overall.

I've seen Super Birds, Daytonas, AARs and Super Bees and all of the fast Mopars on the street when they were new. My 1st car was a 2D 1971 Dodge Monaco 383 2 barrel, I've owned 4 Mopars and my present one is a 2020 Challenger Scatpack Widebody. The 318 is an under appreciated motor. Back in the day, not many people hot-rodded them. Those engines responded to carb/intake, cam, bolt-on mods as well as other popular V8s of the time. They definitely were not dogs. The 318 in the videos is stupidly fast
HELL YA little 318s built a few had a 70 Duster 4 speed 4:30 rear with a blown up 340 but I had a 318 engine all prepped out of all used parts just about all stock but I did use the 318 heads instead of 340 or 360 heads to keep the compression up. Put in a Crower solid lifter cam .540 lift intake and .525 exhaust and a 108 center line (Was degreed in at 110 center line) I had it from another engine, I got in a trade. He said it was a custom grind I put that in with 273 old adjustable rockers (Always have a set laying around). I ported the stock 318 heads remember folks with small cubic inch engines especially street engines velocity through the ports is important you need the torque on the streets! Installed 1.88 valves and new exhaust valves as well hardened seats for unleaded gas this was in 86 or 87 this is when all the gear heads starting doing this. Anyway a Offenhauser Portosonic ( At least that is my spelling of it LOL) single plane intake Direct Connection mods done to the intake with get ready for this a 850 Thermoquad Carb, A carter electric fuel pump (Took that from a totaled 69 Dart) OK I know a few guys out there are saying I said the the velocity through the ports was super important for torque so why am I running a single plane intake? The answer is easy first remember where I center lined the cam at? Add that with the Popsicle sticks I epoxied in the intake from the Direct Connection engine book all was done to help mid range HP and torque while getting almost the same benefits from running a duel plane intake. In a nutshell it makes the power come on around 4100 rpm up to about 6200 rpm. First pass track was at 75&80 Raceway in MD who did I race? A tunnel rammed 350 nova built up seen him on the streets before we looked each other over but never raced and low and behold here he is lined up with me at the track first race of the night and the first time I took the Duster to the track. I dusted his ass that Duster ran 11:34 at 127MPH can you believe that with 318 heads it was the first pass, The guy was pissed but was a good guy when I showed him my engine and told him what was in it he was floored you see almost since the beginning 318s well they were considered to be grocery geters. 318s? Yeah I like them I know I surprised more than one big block on the streets with that Duster then traded it for a 70 Cuda
@@Firion13 Looking at a 318 build myself but mine will be crazier. Found a guy that used an old LA block with new magnum heads. Overbore to accept 360 pistons and he was pumping 600 HP. Im going to go with a 390 stroker kit from hughes bored over to accept 360 pistons. Should be ridiculous.

The only difference between the 318 and the famous 340 is a few thousandths of an inch in bore. Everything that can be done to a 340 can be done with a 318 and although the factory and others bolt on 360 open chamber heads, the motor performs much better with a set of heads from the 273. Try it

Not many people would buy and Eagle crank in a 3.31 stroke, especially when you can find a factory forged steel crank for cheap. I think it's a stroker. I could be wrong but I doubt it. The magnum is better. It has a factory roller cam. And the block is made of better material. The only big thing is it does not have floating piston pins. But from what I understand the rotating assembly is lighter in the magnum. Also the heads are better on the magnum.
That is fucking impressive!!!!!! I've owned two 318s, a 273, and two 225 Super Slant Six engines. I like them all for different reasons. Best overall is actually the Slant Six. You never have to repair it as long as you keep current with servicing. And if you do have to repair, it's basic tools and relatively fast to get one back in service. What do you think?
Very nice. I don't think you out Horsepower him, but you out drove him. Look like a good 2 car length hole shot. Making up 2 car lengths is a big deal cause he don't have that kind of Horsepower over you.
ROFLLLL!! That small block in an a body ( 3,000 lbs ) will smoke you. My 340 Dart ran 10’s in street form ( not stock ) the FAST 340 Dusters are running 10s with stock manifolds.
What did you do to your 318? I'd imagine flat top pistons, high compression aluminum heads and a cam? Maybe a different crank? I must know... Also... what rear end are you running?

My goal is to do a carbureted single turbo setup on a mostly stock appearing 73' charger.

Not surprising. The 340 was one of the best racing small blocks ever built. Except for the small bore size increase, the 340 was a beefed-up 318.
