AutoGuide asks the question: which affordable rear-drive sports coupe is faster, the Scion FR-S or Hyundai Genesis Coupe? And does faster mean the most fun?
www.autoguide.c...
Affordable rear-wheel drive sports coupes, especially those hailing from the other side of the Pacific, have historically been a rather rare breed. But now, thanks to Hyundai and Scion, us regular folk have not one but two inexpensive rear-wheel drive sports coupes to choose from that don't feature big thirsty engines or pony car badges.

Gen Coupe is severely underrated
Yeah exactly
That is so true
just a tune for 500 bucks puts you over at 300hp and around 380 lbs of tq... glad i didnt get a Brz now..
@@ryangobble8460 I know a girl with 2lt 15 Genesis with downpipe, cai, exhaust and a tune and is at 320whp up from tq was high as well. So like you said $500 plus cost of your supporting mods & your in a rwd 320whp monster. I have the 16 3.8 has 348hp at the crank which is about 305whp (in that area), I have cai, muffler delete (sound amazing) and I'm getting a tune by spring which will raise my redline to 7200rpm, get rid of throttle hang, as well as 1:1 throttle response a huge downfall with these cars the throttle response is slow AF. Anyways for $500 plus supporting mods you'd probably gain 30+whp but you get so many other bonuses with the tach & response etc My car definatly sucks off the line I will totally admit that but once it is rolling its like a freight train, I had it at 240km & it just wanted to keep pulling but I like having my licence and car to enjoy so that's a fast as I've had it. Lol
Love mine
People just frown upon Hyundai because it's Hyundai. But they've come a long way in a small bracket of time.
Heck yea, their my brand of choice now i have a 2013 sedan genesis and its a beast. V6 with 333 hp and it purrs so good.
y que tiene la marca hyundai si es moderno
Awful Aim First off stupid The Toyota is Japanese and The Hyundai is Korean. Learn the dang difference between the two Asian countries man.
Awful Aim Hyundai is Korean #fail, #lifefail
Awful Aim Ignoring the Korean fact. Take a look at the 2010 Genesis Coupe. Looks way better IMO. Shame they ruined the front.
looking at these from a daily driver perspective, the Genesis has a higher quality with far more features inside. When I test drove the FR-S I was surprised at how cheap and plain it was inside. People on here are arguing over track performance as though they go to the track every weekend. considering these cost nearly the same, I would choose the Genesis just because you are getting a more premium comfortable interior with modern day features
hahahaha more premium you say hahahaha those 2 cars are shit i would buy the more acceptable to mods and relieble
Great, I can also get a toyota van for 10k that has twice more comfortable interior than Genesis. Not let's look at it from different perspective. GT86 isn't about interior, or speed. It's purely a fun cornering machine made for drifting or playful turns. It's about enthusiasm and contact of driver and the road. The Genesis was not created for that reason, therefore you can pit these cars all you want in categorical means, but the fact is that GT86 is made for one aspect of driving, and genesis is for another, even though they are considered sports cars.
Unfortunately they've both been discontinued. Got the Geni, next the Frs
The brz interior looks way better than the frs so dont talk
Justin i know ur channel very well i think you should consider buying subaru brz instead of genesis and unfortunately genesis has a rough idle issue and idle fluctuation my friend owns one and had lot of issues so subaru brz is better choice for u if you dont like scion frs and i own one myself i recommend it.
I’ve driven both of these cars. On a street you’re not near the grip limits of the car (usually) which makes the frs feel like any other commuter. The genesis, on the other hand, makes you feel special. Primarily because it’s turbo charged. Going in and out of boost, hearing the sweet sweet blow off valve, the dramatic wait for the boost to come on.... on the street there’s no contest between the two. The genny is faster, prettier, and more fun as well. The 2.0T made me smile more than any other car I’ve driven or owned. And I’ve had some fun cars. A genesis coupe will be my next car.
I agree with you, I got the 2013 2.0T when I was 43 and it made me feel like a teen again. Did you end up getting one ?
That Genesis though makes the FRS look plain. IMO
The Genesis has cheap ricey lines were as the FRS has sleek curves, the just trying to make a Hyundai into something its not, much like the Tiburon. I like some of the first gen Genesis's but the latest is a flop.
Looks is a matter of taste though. It's far from a flop because it's selling well whereas the FRS sell was only strong in the beginning. Genesis offers more bang for your buck.
I admired previous generations of the Genesis this latest one just falls short for me. And its a Hyundai.
56k miles on my 2011 Genesis Coupe and it still runs like new and has had no problems. I did not get to use my 5/60k warranty (still 5k left). I have modded it slightly to fix the understeer. It might be "just a Hyundai" but we like it so much my wife bought a fully loaded Elantra GT. I took on an FR-S on a twisty back road and he was sliding all over trying to keep up.
James-Michael Franklin The first gen offered less HP for their turbo 4.
The FR-S is practically the miata 2.0... A slightly underpowered car that has exceptional handling. It also includes cult-like following of individuals who refuse to acknowledge any faults in it. Great car? Yea. Would tons of people prefer a turbo model as a trim option? Yes
D3f11 damn if I had to choose between a Miata and a Frs id get the Miata at least the 2016. those things are soo damn light 2350 pounds or something.
I own a V-6 '10, 3.8L Genesis Coupe, and it runs beautifully
Yeah, a second hand 3.8 would be cheaper than a new 2.0 turbo.
Here is my opinion: If you live near backroads with lots of twisties, or plan on going to a racetrack at least once a month, then you can't go wrong getting the FRS, other than that I see no point in getting an FRS if the only driving you'll be doing is going to be in the city. This is why if you want a good sports car-daily driver that is more comfortable and easier to live with, and has that extra HP, the gen coupe is it.
I have a got a Genesis Coupe r-spec that I got with 9,000 miles on it for $24,000! So the Scion FR-S can kiss the rear end off my coupe XD
Fuck yeah! I have one too. The frs is just too damn common.
How is it so far? I'm looking at a 2012 3.8 track.
Frs? More like slow-R-S 😂😂😂
SLOW-R-S 😂
i just got a 2013 genesis 2.0 rspec manual! absolutely love it
Have you had any problems yet
Relift, got any issue so far?
Relift ^^
FRS is (in my opinion ) very plain on the inside. I like the Genesis interior, it seems way more luxurious and it wraps around you like a jet cockpit. I hate flat dash boards. I love the wrapping around the driver dash
I bought 2013 Genesis 3.8 Grand touring with orange copper color. I still get "very nice car", "what is it" "beautiful" comments very often. I recently went BMW, Audi, Lexus for test drive. I decided not to change to another car for a while longer. This car is really great. Music system is amazing, the seat is great. interior is nice, the line from side is amazing.
Shana Han I agree I just purchased my second Genesis my first one got totaled in a wreck. But the upgrade from 2010 to the 2013 is amazing. I got a 2013 3.8 grand touring with peanut butter seats, I also get asked what kind of car I have a lot since it's not so obvious with the genesis logo.
I have a 2013 its been a great car so far.
I have the 3.8 track in blue and I still love this car like crazy also get comments on the regular like nice car what kinda car etc etc great car!
FRS NEEDS. MORE. POWER. PERIOD. Plus the aftermarket for the Genesis will be simpler since it's already boosted, minimal bolt-ons and tuning will easily increase it's power.
***** I thought the same thing about the Genesis. I was going to hold out for a 3.8 but got a great deal on a 2.0t Premium and figured I can just upgrade the turbo at a later date since it's already set up with one.
I think the FRS/BRZ is a perfect candidate for a project car. It has everything you'd want for a starting point. Maybe not as fancy as the features in the Hyundai, but it's much more sleek, clean, attractive to me. I do plan on getting one for a project.
I think there is/will be plenty of aftermarket performance available for the FRS.
@@ConsciousRobot unfortunately you need to rebuild the engine to reliably boost it. It has a 10 : 1 compression a turbo would destroy the engine. To boost it you would need pistons rated at 8 : 1 or 9.5 : 1 liks the genesis coupe 2.0t. However I do agree that the boxer engine is tuner friendly, just not cost effective.
be prepared to be disappointed
As a '13 Genesis Coupe owner, I feel you guys really hit it on the head with pros/cons. Excellent review.
I took all the sports coupes for a test drive. From the 15s the eco boost and 5.0 stang, the frs, 370, hellcat, even a older used gtr, and many more. Winner of everything from handling, space, fun, livability, ect was the 3.8 genesis coupe ultimate. Have a one sitting out in the driveway. 10 year warranty 350 hp fun as hell don't cost my left nut to do a brake job, good room, better dealership, its just a good balanced car.
I'm calling BS. 1. To say you drove all the sport coupes is just bs. 2. That you are saying that this is the best one is laughable.
Scott Wallace From owner ship of the car, to the handling, and performance its the best buy. Im looking at it from an all around perspective from the warranty down to what your getting for your money its the best you can get.
So 1. you shouldnt have said that you drove every sports coupe cause that would be well over 30 cars. 2. It is the one that you like the most, not the best one. What you are getting is a low class, sports/luxury crossover that (instead of giving you the best of both words) gives you a mediocre experience in both worlds. If you buy an into level BMW, Porsche or Audi you are getting far better luxury experience, better engines and better warranties. If you go with an frs/brz you again get a better engine, more reliability and save 4k to do whatever you want with (like getting better tires/rims and coilovers). Don't get me wrong, the genesis is a good car and it does what it is intended to do well, im sick and tired of this "Genesis is hands down the BEST car/tuning platform crap" That is an objective statement with even the best of cars and the genesis is over weight, has a mediocre engine, mediocre turbo, and poor cornering/braking.
I did drive them audi lexus porsche Hyundai bmw ect... They are nice but none of them are as well rounded as the genesis. The genesis isnt the best at everything by a long shot but its the best to live with on a daily basis. Everything from insurance cost, handling, power, warranty, ect... Its all good with the genesis
All i am saying is that YOU MAY LIKE IT THE MOST but you are being ridiculous to call it the best like it is a certifiable fact.
I feel like silver makes that brz/ frs look just ugly and dated
You wrong
To be fair, the silver on that car looks much better in person.
Ankhnybayar Battulga you caveman
Scion FR-S: looks fast but a V6 Camry will walk it like a dog on a leash
Genesis Coupe: looks fast, actually is fast
"gauges look like they are from a 95 Subaru." That guy has obviously never seen a 95 Subaru of any kind.
youre lying to yourself if you say you take an 200hp 2.0 2900~lb frs over the 350hp 3500~ 3.8 genesis
i bet he was sponsored by toyota
meanwhile the race tester wanted to up the hyundai but the guy kept talking him down
like jeeze 2000 dollars; it's not much
spend like 2000 dollars trying to get and install in a turbo charger or something onto that crappy frs
Facts
genesis coupe is a luxury designed sports car that is why it has a very good interior
It does
Genesis is a way better bang for your buck , just looked up the price for a 2015 3.8 Genesis R spec online , and it comes in at just under 30,000 up here in Canada.
IlikeBball234 better for most people. for people who want fun over speed the scion is better. the subaru brz is the best though because it has a much nicer interior than the frs
Alexander White Put a set of cheap tires on your Genesis and it will handle like a FRS too..
Dee Jay a set of cheap tires will make it 600 pounds lighter, have better balance and a lower center of gravity?
news to me, genius
Dee Jay dumbass
HayrettinBalci It would make the car slide easier.. You honestly didn't understand what I mean?
no matter what ill choose the toyobaru brz or frs. why? i can trust the people who make the car. toyota and subaru have been in the tuning game way longer and all you need to do is slap a turbo on it and itll beat the gen without issue. the purpose of this car was to be a fun affordable sports car. the frs lost by about 1 sec. tells you a lot compared to a car with 274hp vs the frs's 200hp. im done.
You should butt hurt. I'm an Toyota fan.. But I give credit where ita due.
Good review. I've test driven both and prefer the Genesis mainly because it had noticeably more power at the higher rpms and you can get an 8 speed auto or v6 option. The warranty also blows every other car manufacture away.
hyundai is better and awesome
MARIA SOL GUTIERREZ i agree
A lot of people hate on the fake hood vents, but I like the way they break up the forward profile, and give it a look that is just different from anything else on the road.
FRS/BRZ is such a beautifully designed car. People always say it's slow, but 200hp is a great starting point for building a decently quick car. It's got everything a tuner would want in a OEM: light weight, rear wheel drive, wonderful weight distribution with agile and precise handling. It's absolutely beautiful and in my opinion should be a tuner's dream. I just don't understand all the hate.
The FRS is outclassed...
This is is like comparing an Apache Helicopter to Justin Bieber with a spit straw...if he had asthma.
If you only care about straight line speed and not overall driving dynamics such as steering feel and chassis balance. the Hyundai has sloppy steering which is the worst thing you can have in a 'sports car'.
interior is better in the genesis as well, i thought about buying a frs until i seen the inside. I still like them though, fun little cars i just went with something better equipped.
+Neal Rodgers except justin bieber is a famous musician and you are a dumbfuck with bad taste in cars.
1AndyOnly I have bad taste? You're fat ass drives a Camry!
+Neal Rodgers fat? I'm in incredible shape dumbfuck and whats wrong with a Camry and yeah I own one.
Why did the scion frs toyots 86 subaru brz whatever not comw with a turbo or atleast a seperate model that did
I considered getting an FR-S however I had to go with turbo Genesis. Once I took out the silencers from the turbo it screams :-) I think it looks better too but that's my opinion. I think both cars are great.
I've had an FRS for about 3 months now and live it. So much fun to drive! Unbelievably smooth acceleration, and corners like nothing I've ever driven. Of course the mustang is faster, but EVERYONE has one! Frs is for people who value some style and fun over pure HP. Yeah your genesis will beat me on a drag race. But I'm not a racer, I just wanted a car that was fun to drive and looks good. Frs was the winner hands down of everything I tested.
The FRS/BRZ has such an insane following that the amount of quality aftermarket parts make it a classic tuner car. Here in Japan there is already an insane market for drift, grip, touge, etc parts. The styling isnt for me, but it is a solid car to start with. Just went to the D1GP last week and saw UpGarage's ej25 powered 86 destroy.
Its just sad that the big brembos dont have good pads. Thats why the breaking is sloppy, they have generic break pads in brembo calipers.
Dam. Im really stumped on which to buy. Im not really looking to mod or break any speed records. I prefer frs looks but so many people calling it too slow clouds my judgment.
+Jos3sb Well if you're not gonna be a speed demon just get in the cars and get a good feel for them. I was skeptical about the genesis until I test drove it. I fell in love and bought it that same day. I needed usable rear seats so it was a easy choice out of the two
+Dre Got It haha yeah I bought a 2015 genesis 3.8 and couldnt be happier! I love how its so rare where I live too as an added bonus.
Dre Got It Hahahaha you needed rear seats? My best friend has a 2015 Genesis and you can't even fit a midget in the back! You fucked up m8
Nick Cotiuc nah man my rear seats work out well for me. it's not the most space on the world but there's plenty of space to allow for anyone under 5'8 to fit. any taller and they'll be hitting there head on the rear window
Dre Got It The problem he has isn't the head room, but the leg room. If there are people in the back then the people in the front are squished and that way everyone in the car is uncomfortable. It's hard to spend more than like 10 minutes in his car if there are 4 people
If it has the same liters as my Mountain Dew, it ain't for me.
The V6 Genesis Coupe 348hp is a 3.8 tho
♠ Jac0z ♠ GFX Banner&Logo @300Subs Yes, it was just a D-bag way for me to say I choose the Genesis lmao.
Aggressive Pizza Gosh, I did not realise ahahhah sry
You sound like an American
Such great videos. Really miss these
I'd rather the genesis, souly for the turbo charger, it sounds amazing paired with a blow off valve air intake and exhaust. That's what mine has and it's an absolute joy to drive
silver on an frs is just a sin.
If I had to choose, I'd pick the FRS/BRZ. Aside from the extensive customization you can give it, it's just so much fun to drive.
Silver*
Have you driven a 370z? way more fun
yeah but its a 2 seater
When the FR-S looses.........ohhhhh wait winning is not everything and the fastest is not the best... Fun to drive does not win races hence the race track. Plus the Gen is more comfortable in daily driving. Stick with the base Gen and it will still win if you focus on price. Thought that guys glasses would make him a little more studious.
brian evans pahhhh I bet you drive a slow as car lololol
brian evans bring sti and we will discuss again.
I traded my 07 tiburon SE for a '14 frs. I was looking at the genesis because I really did like the Tiburon and knew the Genesis was way better. The problem I had was that the Genesis had a higher price(I was gearing towards the V6) and that the aftermarket game is weak for any Hyundai. The Fr-s already has an insane amount of aftermarket parts from reputable companies and that will only continue to grow. Stock vs. stock I'd say the Genesis is the better daily driver but the Fr-s is definitely a great car from the factory. The interior is nothing special and I personally don't care much for the the engine/exhaust note(I've heard modified FR-S's that sound awesome so I'm not worried) but the potential that the car yields is endless. If you're looking for out of the box comfort and performance, go with the genesis but if you're looking to gradually build an already great car into a beast,go with the fr-s/brz
Funny how they talked about the plus sides of the Scion and bad sides of the Genesis only...
guess you didn't notice how they talked about the genesis' great engine, much better interior, brakes, suspension and an available V6. Also quicker to 60 and a higher power to weight ratio. They claimed on the FR-S that the wheels look too small and look too tunerish. You didn't pay much attention to the video.
A LOT of people seem to bash the FRS and say it has no power or a cheap interior. I will say that the interior on the base trim model does leave something to be desired, especially with the HVAC controls. However, the 10-series is pretty sweet. It takes a lot of it's inspiration from the Toyota FT86, sharing the same HVAC controls, push button start, Navigation, frameless mirror, as well as a few other cues. On top of that you have a few other 10-series extras: silver silk seat belts, silver ignition paint, glowing LED dash, glowing blue/white front/rear emblems, special trunk mat, FT86 Headlamps with HID's and Xenon DRL's...and the list goes on. The first thing I did to my 10-series was buy a new wheel/tire setup (17x8's w/ 245/40 Continental ExtremeContact's) - they bite a helluva lot harder than the stock Prius tires. Just putting tires on this car changes it's behavior completely. I also have exhaust, intake, crank pulley, short shifter, a lot of TRD components, and a bunch of interior upgrades. I can tell you that right now this FRS interior is not at all bland or cheap feeling. The good thing about the FRS is that a lot of it's flaws are easy to fix and don't take tons of money. Coilovers, tune, driveshaft, and a few other things are next up on the list but those are all a little on the expensive side. My point in saying all this is that, unless you get the 10-series FRS, don't expect BRZ Limited-like creature features. The base FRS is a steal for $24K, and it is still fun to drive on the road despite not having 300 HP.
2019 but I got me a Genesis coupe 2010 2.0 and let me tell you... It's awesome
1.25.0 to 1.26.2
1.2 seconds slower is a big difference
Do 10 laps the frs is behind by 12 secs
I love the hp/torque on genesis, but i like the style of the frs
Kind of sucks in today's standard, 2700 lbs is considered lightweight now. Lots of cars like the civic, corolla, mazda3, are also all around that weight, really negating the "light weight" novelty of the BRZ/FRS.
light weight use to be 2000lbs lol.
AzNightmare most rear wheel drive cars are not around the same weight. driveshaft and other stuff causes more weight unless they're rear engined. and good job for mentioning the mazda3. i have a 2006 2.3l with a 5 speed manual and it's great fun. most people don't consider it a competitor to the scion tc but not only is it nicer inside, it is also faster. the 3 is 2750 lbs while the tc is in the mid 2900's. tc drivers get pissed off when i pull away and then claim they got a bad start because they drive a "sports car" haha they don't know shit.
madara uchiha like the original miata, 2150lbs
Alexander White I like the Mazda 3 as well, but would love the Mazdaspeed 3 even more, lol! I wish they made them in a rear wheel drive configuration, though.
whats the song around the 2 min mark
I own a 2010 Gen V6 and put 60,000 agressive miles on it so far. Days in the shop? NONE. Just put the front camber kit on it along with 255/275 F/R tires and you will not believe it's the same car. The GenCoupe is way underrated. Premium gas with a simple 10 min zero dollar, filter mod = 322 bhp = 13.8 sec 1/4 and 0-60 in 5.4 sec. I love this car.
ate a little frs for breakfast this morning on the freeway .. quit thinking that piece of shit is fast, things get passed by soccer moms in their mini vans lmao
+IZOK you're a moron
At least you're admitting your car is slow af.. LOL
+Christian Robertson 275hp in a 3300lbs car isn't fast either..
lol
fr slow 0-60 7 + seconds, 2.0t gen 5.7, 3.8 5.0 seconds. LOl what a joke
lol you can just put summer tires on the fr-s with the money you saved from not buying the gen and that fr-s with summer tires would beat the gen around a track
brian evans you're getting this all wrong, straight line performance is for people who don't dare drifting corners. its also a show of the car not the driver, mother teresa can trap a 1/4 mile just as fast as you. but 86 drivers enjoy driving their car at 10 10ths, driving it at the limit which is much more thrilling than winning elementary stop light drags.
brian evans well I'm not ignoring the fact i consistently take highway on ramps at 110kmph, something a camry will never do. driving in a straight line doesn't make you a better driver, it makes you feel cool. 'ouuu look at me as i put the pedal to the floor, I'm just so cool holding a wheel straight, i bet i have greater driving abilities than everyone else because I'm in front'. if you want to go fast you buy a sport bike and beat everything you come across on the road. if you want to have fun, drive a cars heart out and not wrap it around a pole you buy an 86/miata/s2k. i have a friend who used to own a 507awhp MPS tuned WRX and says the BRZ is in its own way more fun to drive and more rewarding. stop being ignorant toretto. don't forget you can solve this lack of power issue with a turbo kit, which puts it ahead of most in a straight and still on rails in the corners.
yea and if you have deep pockets you can go with a full on 2jz swap rather than just turbo the fa20 thats in there, and this would be such a fun car, and also put coil overs with a 245 front tire and a 265 rear tire (summer tires of course) if they would fit
Mike Paonessa
Yea i can put a turbo kit on a pickup truck who cares it doesnt come from subaru that way. were comparing stock for stock.. a go cart is "fun" to drive. doesnt mean u wont be embarrassed when a camry or honda oddessy smokes you at a stop light in front of your girl lollll
bevans228 you're still being ignorant, stop light racing is only half the story, no family sedan will keep with this thing in the corners
Genesis fam 🔥🤘🏼
good job you caught my mistake! the push button start only comes on the 2.0t premium trim level which only has a 8 speed automatic
yea i picked one up, just finished a full month of owning the car and i couldnt be happier. great drivers tool and fun car. it handles like a dream and the rear wheel drive give it a great feel. You are totally in control and the VSC mode allows you to drift corners and drive it like it was meant to be driven. Also you can easily take off traction completely at the touch of a button if you wanted.
Which one?
Genesis coupe is still beast even though Hyundai just got into the sports car scene. Wait and see what they can do couple years down the road...
frs with a turbo wooo
People really misunderstand the FR-S. The car was made as a platform for motorsport. Everything on the car was put there with the understanding that it would likely be modified or replaced. Knocks against the car like a cheap interior are a part of this philosophy; FR-S owners likely will not care about the interior, save the seat and the wheel. Also, why put a premium interior in a car that'll probably be gutted anyways? Let the consumer save that money to put towards coil-overs or better wheels.
Not necessarily. GT86 is a drift entrance car, pure and simple.
While the frs/brz have a larger demo for enthusiasts then most cars, most of the brz/frs buyers are still going to keep the car stock to only very slightly modded. Most arnt going to gut the car. I don't have a problem with the interior. Sure it would be fantastic for the interior to have a gti premium feel but I'm not complaining. I think they just came out with a premium cosmetic model and have no doubt they will offer a turbo once sales of the cars start coming down.
wth mods an fr-s
like wtf; i might as well spend that 2000 dollars for modding into buying that genesis coupe and do LESS work and get a faster lap time
I have a friend of mine that has the Genesis Coupe 3.8 R spec. He puts regular unleaded in it all the time and has never given him problems. He actually never buys premium. Your car will see better performance with premium because it burns cleaner and produces SLIGHTLY (almost unnoticeable) more power.
Genesis has a meaner looks and more HP than the FRS ... people keeps saying that Hyundai is a cheap brand, last time I remember scion is the cheap no sorry cheaper brand than Toyota ... Hyundai goes with the class as Toyota and Honda .... the only advantage on the FRS is small and light weight but no power and interior sucks... IMO.. just saying
hyundai is a cheak knock-off of honda, they even got sued for having the "same" name and very similar cars and the way the cars are "packaged"
tacos4u632 SMH...
Toyota has a better shifter, the Hyundai is more comfortable, Toyota gets better gas mileage, Hyundai is faster, Toyota handles better, which ever is more important. Maybe sqeeze a few more horses out of the Toyota, I have a 2006 Civic with the 1.8 and I got an extra 20 hp by redoing the cold air intake & K&N and Magnaflow exhaust and low profile performance radials & running it on premium. Youcan really notice the HP increase ( it's a 5sp stnd) because it's such a light car - it only weighs 2500 lbs - a couple extra pounds in the tires and the little bugger really moves! watch-out for those speed traps lol!
tacos4u632 Yeah, they are not as reliable, crappy shifter.
fourteen Ha hahahahahaha. You know nothing.
Put a stage 1 turbo on the FR-S. ~$4,000. The extra 75 horses will make it outperform the Gen Coupe in every way except how the interior looks, which nobody even cares about when they buy either of these cars.
buy a $500 ecu for genesis and have the same power as the v6 version
KILLERDOWN7
Exactly. It's the same story comparing the 2.4L NA Solstice/Sky vs the GXP/Redline. You can add supercharger or turbo to the 2.4L like I have done for around $3-5,000; but a simple tune of the turbo ECM on the GXP/Redline and you'll be over 300hp/ft-lbs at the wheel for less than $300. And on the used market the turbo models are only around 2-3k difference now; so it's really a no brainer. In this comparison; I'd go with the Genesis. Easily tunable to gain hp/torque. And I'm sure with some minor suspension mods you can dial out the understeer. At the end of the day, for less than a grand, you could have a car that's roughly twice as good as the FRS. That said, I'd get rid of those fake hood scoops in a heartbeat. lol...
Hahaha buy a 4k kit pssst. All a gen needs is a ecu tune and you can easily achieve 300+ hp and a copious amount of torque.
Yeah and blow your engine and then what
6:20 BUT DAT AUDI R8 DOE!
I think people really need to stop arguing over which is better.
Because at the end of the day, no matter which you choose, you'll either be driving a Scion or a Hyundai. Pick your poison.
Toyota or Hyundai ;)
cris lopez
Toyota-Subaru or Hyundai ;)

So...no one is going to comment on how this guy is in a full racing suite and helmet in that slow car?
you need proper gear for a track otherwise they wont let you in
Right on Harvin and I'd add one more point that a lot of the guys making comments on here are probably early 20's and have owned how many cars over their life time ? Yet they are all knowing about all these types of cars. Altough it was a good review about the 2 cars.
nice review but guess what some of us don't drive the car on track all day and actually have to drive in cities and highways
guys. put the same tyres on for the track times. summer sticky against low friction is maybe 3 seconds. no one is going to track the FT86 with low friction tyres.
Genesis front is BUTT-UGLY, like a dorky soccer mom 4-door econo car. What was Hyundai thinking???
its better in black, its not that bad looking in person really,.
Matter of opinion, i think it looks good. It has the right amount of aggressive with good body lines. Its not ment to look like an Aston Martin. It looks like a street fighter, dignified but always pissed off wanting to fight.
Yeah I agree. I really liked the last generations styling. But this new one I hate the front soccer mom front fascia and the rear lamps look terrible as well. The FR-S on the other hand looks killer. It just needs more power.
p4horror the frs is a piece of shit but it looks average. Imho im not a fan of the frs i like bold lines and a evil looking front. The frs is a beautiful car but that in itself makes me not like it one bit, its too soft and pudgy looking. It also has nothing to back up its beautiful looks as its miserable to drive
Robert Hollar I agree, the FRS is a total chic car, looks good but just looks to feminine to me. the genesis just has soooo much presence on the road and looks aggressive. Glad to be the owner of one.
frs and brz are complete garbage, a paltry 150 torque, lol. Hyundai is killing the game and will continue to do so.
anarchyamp A simple header install and a tune fixes the tourqe "issue". Idk people complain about the numbers that the car makes, like every car is supposed to have 300hp/torque from the factory; I used to as well, until I drove one. Its Toyobaru's Miata; its lightweight, rwd, and affordable. It wants to be driven at high rpms, it wants to modified, plus the aftermarket for this car is outrageous.
anarchyamp frs looks awesome and turbo it genesis is trash compared
LIVEbrownBoy my Genesis is a 3.8L v6 with a single turbo.... I will crush a FRS in a race lmao, the FRS is nice to look at don't get me wrong but it's not in the same league as the Genesis
Tyler Kinsey yea there broth great cars bro but i prefer the frs because its more reliable lighter and looks wway better
LIVEbrownBoy eh reliability is iffy because I've never had a problem with mine
I honestly like both of them, and i would take either if given the choice.. However if i were to buy one i'd choose the Genesis (I've drove one at a dealship and almost fell in love with it).
This is a "Muscle Vs Tuner" comparison.
2.0 Gen coupe might as well be a tuner... you can push ridiculous power for little money with it.
But it's heavy and doesn't have great input feel (shifter, steering) hence the muscle.
I would certainly be happy with either :D However, the Toyota is a much more mature product, and Toyota's know-how can certainly be seen here.
Jean V not really...it's basically just a 2.0slow
Haha, though I'm pretty sure you would not be able to ride it to its full potential :D
+Cameron Hatton it's faster than a fox body 5.0. I had it track verified.
Genesis looks ugly overall and the frs front looks terrible, the wide front of the brz looks better. Id chose the frs over the genesis. The genesis style just looks too cheezy.
FRS is way better, and it looks way nicer.
+Morgan Ruble FRS can only run on premium an Genesis can run on regular. The Base Genesis has 74 more HP then the FRS and the quality of the interior is far superior then the FRS. Having been in both the FRS is severely overrated drives great but the Genesis is way better for the money
+TheAventadorSV I like the FRS better because it has a lower center of gravity and even though it has less horsepower the lighter weight makes up for it. I have driven both too and I bought the FRS. I personality liked it better and I liked the style of the body better. It doesn't only run off of premium, it's recommend to use premium but the manufacturer even said you can use mid grade or regular gas instead. I love my car and enjoy taking care of it so I do use the better gas.
Morgan Ruble Don't get me wrong its still a great car, I don't hate it but where I live theres so many. Genesis's are rarer, and actually grabs peoples attention although i don't live in a rural area theres plenty of straights where the extra power would make a difference, but the FRS is perfect for backroad hoons but honestly the Genesis is underrated compared to the FRS. It seems like a better bargain to get the Genesis
with new tires, an exhaust, lightweight crank pully, and POSSIBLY a tune for under 2k, it would definitely be a whole different race
September (2016) I was torn between the two. I had the choice between a base model Genesis coupe 2.0T and a base FR-S. The FR-S also was running about $1500 more with around 15k more miles on it as well. (and yeah yeah I know this video is on the R-spec)
I ended up buying the Genesis coupe. For those that cannot choose, and for the guys in this video. I whole heartedly believe the FR-S is the better car... BUT only in the performance field. To an enthusiast, the FR-S FEELS so much better to be in. I came from driving a 350z and being behind the wheel of the genesis just felt so foreign... I felt as if I was driving a massive sedan. The Genesis on the other hand is substantially more comfortable to daily and simply be in. The stereo is phenominal, the luxuries inside makes it feel like you paid $10k more for all that you got.
Why exactly did I go for the Genesis over the FR-S? The genesis warranty was still in effect. As a second owner you get a 60k miles 5 year warranty bumper to bumper (first owners get 100k mile 10 year extended on the drivetrain!). Secondly, the genesis is FAR more practical. I can fit friends in the back seat much more comfortably and the trunk space is insane. Another selling point is the raw power you have in a straight line. I'm all for cornering at speeds but I rarely get to do any of that, just having that 75'ish more horsepower and the kick of the turbo really makes it enjoyable (Side note, my friend couldn't leave me behind in his 5.0 mustang, both of us were flying at ~75-80 mph and both were in 4th gear). Also, holy hell the turbo noise! I removed my Bypass valve recirc. hose and capped off the intake and man does this thing sound insane. I'm totally getting a legit BOV soon. Aside from the luxuries and the straight line speed, the price I got on the genesis was unbeatable at the time of purchase. My only major complaint about the base Genesis is the lack of LSD.
Definetely Genesis Coupe!
FRS>Genesis
They just pumped up the engine with a turbo to hide the Genesis's flaws, give the frs a turbo then compare them. The 86 name was never about horsepower anyways.
Only if you haven't driven the two.
They Genesis came out before the frs and was turbo'd... So how exactly did they add the turbo to hide the flaws from the frs/brz?
jay hundley because the first gen coupe only had 214 hp not the 274hp it has now. it was upped for the 2013 model. the first gen coupe 2.0t wasn't fast enough considering it didn't handle that well either and now it has plenty of power but still doesn't handle well and the turbo kicks in with a very sudden surge. not great if you have tc off and are hooning round a corner in the wet(spin). the genesis coupe is a nicer car to drive for everyday driving since it's got more power for passing and gunning off the line but the frs/brz is a lot more fun on good roads.
+Alexander white I can agree with what you're saying I bought a 2010 r-spec with 27k miles on it and I can agree with the handling in wet conditions with tc turned off, but non the less I love the car and it's fun to drive and gets lots of stares from people, Ive been constantly asked what kind of car it is and when I tell people it's a Hyundai they're shocked by my response lol
My veloster could beat a firs lmaaao
that gensis coupe front is so ugly i had nightmares...plus why compare a 270+hp car against a 200hp car? lmfao
cause it's only 2000 dollars more expensive
They recalled 7.4 million because of window switches. 157,000 for airbags and wipers, 2.7 million for water pump issues. That's in the last five years!
Now there is an update. There is no longer going to be a 2.0T in the 2016 model. They are going to be competing with BMW and Audi. So the V6 will be the base engine, then the 5.0 V8 from the Genesis sedan will be put in for the premium option. Of course, this is all up to change.
that white dude with the glasses is bias as heck towards the FRS! the genesis coupe is just better in all categories, yall tested it, yall said it, just admit it.
Brandon Beserra I'll assume you haven't driven both of these cars because if you had you'd realize that although the Genesis coupe has better specs it is definitely not a superior driving experience. Sure the Hyundai makes you feel like more of a man in the straight aways but the giddy feeling you'll experience as you drift around a corner in the brz is infinitely more satisfying.
I've driven a brz and it was very underwhelming and the only reason the back end kicks out is because
To each their own I suppose
...because it has thin prius tires on it. Any wider tires and that won't happen. The lack of power made the car to me feel a little boring but for the price you can't beat the look
Lmao the frs has prius wheels and that's why the car drifts easy and well
Put your FR-S in Sport mode and watch the bitch take off for 200whp... Got a white one and it's WAYYY fucking sharper in person than that Genesis.... More fun, too. Better handling and stays true to what it is... a sports car.
200hp not 200whp and you obviously never drove a genesis lmfao
is that warm hole provider? 200whp?
What in the fuck are you trying to say?
you got it in auto?
Yep. Truth be told, I was never taught by anybody how to drive Stick. I do like the paddle shifters, though!
lol@ the kiddies fanboying the Hyundai
I feel like the scion is more of an enthusiast car just because how much things you can do with it .
I highly disagree with the reliability claim. With 8 cars that I have owned brand new, Hyundai and Kia are the only two that had major engine problem in the first two years of ownership. 1 had a blown engine, ended up with a complete replacement under warranty, the other one had similar event but with replaced engine parts instead. The other brands I owned are 2 Hondas, 2 Audis, 1 BMW, and a Dodge. None of them had major engine problems. One Audi had a fuel injector problem and was replaced.
Took an 8 minute video to tell me what I already knew, that Hyundai makes awful cars.
Amen brother.
ive never had any issues with there cars and ive drove one above 350k miles before with no warranty work performed at all and is still running an driving with the guy I sold it to in fact Hyundai is the third largest auto manufacturer in the world right now and has made a huge jump in reliability
Oh naw lol if anything the genesis is still the faster car
Hyundai and Kia are just trash in a fancy bag.
Check out Hyundai's sales stats. There is no way that many customers would buy "trash"
My genesis was worth every penny. Dont judge a car just based on the make. They have came so far in such little time. Hyundai is now my brand of choice after purchasing my 2013 genesis sedan.
I totally agree the first generation of the genesis coupe and sedan were awful riddled with problems. The engines are not as reliable as one would think lots of cheap plastic
it actually comes with push button, fuel consumption gauge. engine torque output gauge is only on the v6 and 2.0T boost pressure gauge
haha this is awesome, I literally just went through this debate when I went shopping for my new car. I drove them both twice, and the FRS is so much more fun to drive. Needless to say, I bought the Scion. And by the way, to say the Genesis has a "relatively narrow power band" like they did in this video, is definitely an understatement. The turbo was almost useless, by the time it finally spooled up and made significant boost it was time to shift gears!
hmm I thought the r-spec only came in a red/black interior, atleast that's what's in my moms.
Kind of an un-fair comparison here.
What alot of people have not realized is that Hyundai has changed ALOT in the past few years. A friend of mine has driven his Genesis Coupe over 120k miles and has not had ANY problems. Iv'e personally driven the coupe and its a Fantastic car (both the 3.8l v6 & 2.0t).
just for people curious the brake fade on the Genesis was because Hyundai in all their glory put REALLY REALLY Cheap pads on.. i dont think they were even suppose to be on the brembos... basically if you put cheap ass pads on brembos they eat them alive. If you do get the brembo package be aware its like 260 dollars to change your pads... if you get the stuff that isn't gonna wear out in a couple stops.
The FRS/BRZ/GT86 was meant to be a cheap, lightweight alternative. Not a turbo 4/3.8l V6 wannabe 350/370Z. That’s why the BRZ family smokes track records at the highest tier of racing, can’t have all the nice interior BS when it wasn’t made for that and they wanted to keep it affordable so more people could have fun. I test drove a Hyundai and it felt sluggish as hell going around corners and the seat/6spd manual were uncomfortable as hell. I’m glad I bought my BRZ, haven’t regretted a single second of it and it’s like being in Gran Turismo everytime I get in and the transmission is bulletproof
Me and my wife just bought a Genesis 3.8. Traded a Civic Si sedan for it. Ive owned a Mustang GT, a Civic Si, and now the Gen 3.8. By far my favorite is the Civic Si. My wife loves the Genesis the best.
The Genesis may vary well be the better looking and more powerful car, but I don't believe it fairly competes with the FRS. The FRS was designed to be a driver's tool, which means improving your own driving, upgrading your car, and enjoying a pure driving experience. That's what a driver's car is in my eyes.
Okay, so the car of choice ( after shopping for a couple of weeks ) was the Genesis Coupe, I've taken two extensive trips in the past year and the car performs perfectly.
The 2.0T engine has all the power I need and this car is so smooth on the highway and very comfortable on long trips.
A 2011 BMW M3 sells for around $55k. in Vancouver so really we are talking apples and oranges comparing prices.
Personally I don't find the FR-S " ugly " at all, nice car but the Gen.Coupe has it beat by miles.
86 was more fun to drive here, now that's what matters!
As long as it doesn't leak. All it does is provide steam from reactor cooling to provide heat energy under pressure to turn a reciprocating engine. I'm not sure of the commercial application, but I wouldn't think it's far off from military equipment.
Wow Dave Pratt. Both are cool, but if you want lightweight sports you have to go Scion. Hyundai is just much more luxurious for not much more expensive
I see your point but Toyota did have that Prius gas pedal recall that made the news and it wasnt just one or two cars...
I vote for the Hyundai Genesis 2.0T - R/SPEC, I owned a 2010 version now have the 2013...
Yes you did break it down and I completely agree with you. I've taken two long trips in my 2011 Genesis Coupe 2.0T Premium.
My opinion is on the same line, the Genesis Coupe is a touring car, for cruising on the highway the 2.0T. engine does a very impressive job and for me it has more than enough power.
Also very comfortable driving this car with the well designed bucket seats.
Genesis in that trim is already $2,000 more than the Scion. The V6 R-Spec is almost $4,000 more and the highest model is $8,000 more. They also downplay the weight difference, and having owned heavy and light cars, the light ones are always going to be more nimble and more fun to drive. I'm actually buying an FR-S this week.
I got a 2015 Genesis Coupe. GDI was the only engine option by that point. In a straight line it blows the doors off of 4.6 mustangs and LS1 camaros that everybody seems to have around here. The electronic throttle lag is horrible and it takes all but a clutch dump to convince the bastard to slide around unless taking a corner. It hugs the road pretty well under engine load but it gets kinda floaty over bumps at cruise velocity. The most notable thing about it that ive noticed, is the vtec-ish power band. absolutely gutless low end but it turns into a rocket at anything over 4k. and by the time ya bang 3rd gear there isnt much low end available anyway. It's the complete opposite of the American muscle car. Whoever says the FR-S is the most fun is usually right, if fun means sliding around and being snorty. Because the Genesis is almost useless to play with in a city, because all the fun begins at around 50 miles per hour. Personally though, if I had one of these Toyobarus, id be pretty ashamed of getting smashed on by stock Pontiac Grand Prixs, which have similar horsepower and strangely, similar quarter mile ETs. I love this thing, even being unwieldy, because it really pisses people off to have their pony car tromped by a hyundai.
Your right they are different the blocks were changed to accommodate front engine rear drive versus front engine front/all wheel drive.
