I was thinking the same thing.. those ladies work really hard. And to my child took band as an elective this year I had no idea how many hours of practice or what all even went into band and he's only in 7th grade right now. I have learned a lot about it. It was always my favorite part of the football game for years and now I have a lot more appreciation for halftime.
You couldn't have articulated that statement any better. As HBCU alums, it's imperative that we continue to support one another. As a former member of the HU Marching Force ("82-"86), I know better than anyone about the rich history of the Spartan Legion. Nothing buy love and respect for our brothers and sisters in Norfolk!

Next stop for the Hampton band should be Pasadena, California, in the 2024 Tournament of Roses (Rose Bowl) parade. Norfolk’s State University Spartan Legion Marching Band was recently selected to participate in the 2023 Rose Parade. Tennessee State University Aristocrat of Bands Marching Band, originally selected for the 2021 Rose Parade, will now March in the 2022 parade (all of the bands from 2021 parade, which was canceled due to the pandemic, are marching in 2022.).
Love that NYC got to see an HBCU bring it with vigor and musicality. You won't find the other dance groups doing a heel stretch in the middle of a vigorous routine and every member Hit It! I love all my band babies.

Great footage! You showed everybody in the Band! Everybody! The flag girls were good! I like how classy the dance Squad looked. Their Uniforms were really nice and Christmasy; with the headpieces. Great coverage!
Man it’s crazy that I was in that parade a couple of months ago. I was with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band as a Cymbal line member as Alumni. Got to talk to some of the members of Hampton University. Great group. It was pretty cool getting to me Ralph Nader in person since he is with HU under their percussion section. Was hoping to meet Dr. Jones but I guess he was in the front area with the band at the time. But it was a great experience. I was surprised to hear 7 Bass Drums on their line. Especially Bass 7 and 6 were really thumping even when they were warming up. Us members of the Macy’s Band were really hearing how 7 basses sound like. Plus getting to meet Jazz (Jasmine) she was on the snare line. That was my third Macy’s Parade I marched in. But glad to see a lot of HBCU’s coming out and being selected for the parade.
The ladies are lovely , CAMERAMAN OR CAMERAWOMAN, there is a drumline and a hornline too. The front section is highlighted for long periods of time and the musicians are busting their asses holding marching & playing that equipment
Im going to get flack but this was as bad as ASU in the Rose Parade. We have to do better. It's not just an HBCU gets "invited" to big events but we have to do QUALITY performances and this didn't do it for me.
Why is is so hard to focus on the whole marching band instead of the girls 99% of the video. As a musician and educator we would love to see what the band is doing and that’s not too much to ask. Lovely ladies but let’s show off the band.
First off, it is not easy to record a marching band in motion as it may seem. Especially marching in a fast pace like they were for this parade. Second it’s not always a good idea to record the band close up in a parade simply because you will here the individual horns and not the melody of the band. Third, dancers have a lot of showmanship, moves and pageantry that needs to be shown, the auxiliary as a whole for that matter. I cover HBCU marching bands and parade all the time and this was one of the hardest parades I had to cover simple because the rules that the parade has in place. Lastly I appreciate you for watching, and the feed back. If you would like to see more of the band you can always grab a camera yourself and record them. Show us how it’s done, I’d love to see the footage.
@@SmashTimeProductions You are missing the point. I have been in bands since I was five, and have been teaching band and music for over thirty six years. I have had many of videos done of my groups, and had no problems in that areas. As an educator watching, the video was focused on the front and back of the girls while they are in motion, because that’s important, but other educators educators like us want to see the band not just hear them. Instead of being offended consider what the viewers are saying. Showing the band can be done and I see your point but I know the deal. Showcase the overall band because potential band member might be watching and parents of the band are watching also.

When I heard them play I was like “this can’t be a university?” Music execution was trash, notes were very loose, dance line lacked technique and looked more like a high school. Sorry not sorry but they should take some notes from the HBCU bands of the South.
All HBCU bands don’t have to be the same that’s what y’all need to realize. It’s okay to be different and have your own style that’s how you build your own unique brand.
