    Hiya. No mistake. The mig21 is a good dog fighter (remember, we were talking pilots of equal skill), and still out turns and out accelerates many aircraft in current service. As for it only being an interceptor: there are many folks who have been bombed by Mig21's in recent years, or photo'd by recce 21's. Not to mention the cold war threat of whole squadrons of 21's equipped for spraying NATO troops with chemical agent if the balloon had ever gone up.

  • @dogsbd

    The reason for that is that the US continued to develop and use better fighters (F-14,F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22) while some third rate countries continued to use outdated and dangerous to operate MiG-21's. India is getting rid of it's 21's as fast as it can so as to not loose more pilots to it.
    But just to be complete, the F4 is still in service with Egypt, Germany, Greece, Iran, Japan, S Korea and Turkey. And in the US as a target drone.

    The delta wing MiG-21 did bleed energy relatively quickly in a turn, but still turned better than the F-4. But as I have stated prior, turn rates aren't the most important aspect of a fighter. Speed and firepower are more important, that is why the F-4 is a better fighter than the MiG-21.

  • @dixievfd55

    We tend to laugh at the MiG-21, but it was built as a cheap, high speed, all weather interceptor. Just because something is cheap doesn't mean it sucks as we learned in Vietnam. Remember that while the Raptor and Typhoon outclass the Fishbed, those fighters are still pretty rare.

    1959-1962 the F-4 set 15 speed, altitude and time to altitude records. None of these records were ever beaten by a MiG-21.
    The F-4's normal AA weapons load out was 4 Aim-7 and 4 Aim-9. The maximum AA load out of the MiG-21 was 6 short range AA-8, and this was rarely used.
    True the Navy F-4's never had a cannon, but the USAF F-4E carried the M61 Vulcan which totally out classed the cannon carried by the MiG-21.

    But I am perfectly willing to talk overall numbers:
    The US lost 198 fighter aircraft to MiG's over Vietnam while shooting down 221 MiG's. 224 if you count the 3 MiG-21's shot down by B52 tail gunners.
    Your claim of 350 would not be correct even if one were to include attack, bomber, reconnaissance aircraft and helicopters lost to MiG's.

    The F-4 was better armed, had a longer combat range, better radar and was faster than the MiG-21. The MiG bettered the Phantom in only one area, turn radius.
    And there had never been any acknowledgment" by "the US" that the MiG-21 was the best jet of its time. And there should not be as that assertion simply is not true.

  • @raynkar
    @raynkar 15 років тому +1

    Hi YF681.
    While I agree that the Mig21 is an outstanding aircraft, and has been in front line service for decades, it is no longer classed as a leading edge interceptor/fighter (although is still a good dog fighter). So, assuming the two pilots were equal, and the combat was no holds barred (so likely to be BVR), how do you think the Mig21 would beat an F35. What weapons do you think the Mig would use.
    Of course, there would have to be a serviceable F35 to start with lol (not many of those)

    • @johnwinter2252
      @johnwinter2252 2 роки тому

  • @dogsbd
    @dogsbd 16 років тому +1

    So you now admit the F-4 was faster?
    And the MiG-21 did not break any speed, time to climb or altitude F-4 records. It just never happened as recorded by the keeper of such records, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.
    And there is no internationally recognized record that is kept for "turn rate" and if there were some biplane would own it not the MiG-21. And irregardless I had already stated that the MiG-21 could out turn the F-4.

  • @raynkar
    @raynkar 15 років тому

    Hi YF681. Thanks for the reply. I am starting to see your reasoning now, but am also realising you seem to know little of the 35's avionic systems, or manoeuvrability. It might be worth you checking out the 35's weapon aiming system, and its integrated pilots helmet. Then you would see that your comment on the HUD, would have no effect on the outcome of a dogfight. If current gen fighters can slew their aiming sights sideways (not using HUD), why do you think the 35 would not be able to?

    I'd rather they remade the MiG-21, but with more than 45 minutes of endurance. Ridiculously short range was the only serious flaw the MIG-21 had, and I think doubling that time would be far more useful on an everyday basis than thrust vectoring nonsense.

    Another great characteristic of the plane was that it was very easy to maintain. This allowed the MIG-21 to be sold, traded or given to given to dozens of developing countries during the cold war. The U.S. designed the Freedom Fighter (F-5?) for the same purpose, but it was not nearly as successful as the MIG 21.

    I was recently at an airshow (wings over Illawarra 2022) and there were, very surprising to see in australia, 3 migs. A 15, 17, and 19. They were from the indian airforce and now disused.

    Yeah I love the show Dogfights. I'll PM you a link where I got my information though. Also, vietcong =/= NVA. The VC were basically insurgent fighters who were separate from the official army. They didn't have ROE, didn't answer to the government, and knew the jungle like the back of their hands. The NVA were more organized but had a larger chain of command because they answered to the government. Can't explain well in a comment but basically vietcong = guerrilla fighters. NVA = main army.

    True that the MiG21 and F4 were built for different purposes.
    Perhaps a better match for the MiG21 is the F8 Crusader. The F8 shot down 4 MiG21's with no loss to MiG21's. Three F8's were lost, but to MiG17's, but the F8 also shot down 15 MiG17's.
    The F8 proved to be the best pure fighter in the Vietnam war.

    Fulcrum, Flanker are nice code names. Frogfoot however is just plain weird. Worse then Fishbed. Does the PAK-FA T-50 have a code name yet?

    @florianska6 I think Our B-52 isn't much newer than the "Bear" so You're not alone. Good designs that fit their function and are adaptable will always be around,especially if the price is good.

    No, that was just a very short burst. Those 23mm have a very high ROF. An odd stand set up for bore sighting the guns.

  • @raynkar

    Part two lol.
    Also the migs weapons would not be true all aspect use, and would not be be as effective in either heat seeking or radar guided modes. While the 35 would have true all aspect mssiles, look up/down radar, and possibly optical guidance too. the ecm system on the 35 is still better than the upgrade on the 21.
    Just curious as to your thoughts here. But thanks for the reply :)

    Hangar , stojanka , pas startowy i komenda klapy start zezwalam i mig pięknie szedł do góry. Następnie przestrzelenie NR23 a potem załadowanie amunicji , szkoda że nie pokazano próby silnika na hamowni . To wszystko widziałem na własne oczy w latach 72/74 służąc w lotnictwie .
