I just showed this to four year nine boys and they were transfixed. Only a good movie can bridge time like that. So many lessons and great shots and sequences in here. Real time capsule of Harlem and NYC too.
I remember catching this on tv as a kid and being bored with it because I expected aliens and spaceship battles or something. Rewatched it as an adult and thought it was brilliant!
Saw the french trailer of this movie back in 1985 in paris, i was 6 years old and was fascinated by the visual of that alien dude wearing ripped clothe lost in new york city and wanted to watched it badly. From time to time i keep remembering this movie thinking if i havent dream it until now..after all this decades i finally found that my memories of this trailer was real. So happy to watch the movie i really wanted to see back in 1985, it feel like i am 6 years old again back in 1985 in Paris with my mom.
My introduction to the immense acting chops of Joe Morton. Back then, the Jeffrey Wright of his time. First saw this back in the day when John Sayles films were the definition of independent filmmaking...inherited from John Cassavetes in the 60s and 70s.
I’ve been looking for this film for the longest time. Seen it once as a kid couldn’t think of the name of it but ran into today. Awesome. For some reason though I always thought it was the actor Leon Robinson from above the rim that was in this movie forgot it was Joe Morgan. Both awesome actors
I used to love watching this waaaay back when they played it on cable. The two Joe Morton movies that are somehow missing from my dvd collection is this and Inkwell. I love the scene with the rasta Virgil. I wonder if it's a homage to Dante's inferno where Virgil is guiding Dante through the stages of hell?.

Not Blaxploitation at all. Just another really good John Sayles movie. Joe Morton is wonderful, as always!
I saw this back in 84 I guess it was. Such a unique movie.

I remember the movie poster, reading about it, and renting it when it came out on VHS. Good memories.

My grandfather did the soundtrack to this movie... no joke he did the steel drums
This is a classic. So good.
It was for its time and still is a most refreshingly nice departure from most sci-fi movies about aliens on Earth.
