- Live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London 1982. Miles Davis (trumpet), Marcus Miller (bass), Mike Stern (guitar), Bill Evans (sax), Al Foster (drums) and Mino Cinelu (percussion). This is the "We Want Miles" band.
Marcus was 23. And already REALLY killing it!!!!!
ikr!
Yes really! And influenced by Jaco Pastorius!?
Al Foster is pounding like a metal drummer on this one. More evidence that he can play anything and sound great.
Mike Stern is a wonderful Guitarist, he's top drawer and has been around a long time.
It's nice to see Marcus playing with his fingers. Nowadays it's always slapping.
He has evolved!
Miller playing a la Jaco, Stern playing a la Scofield. There's something odd going on here.
I really loved this particular band. Al Foster is deadly 💀
I think Bill Evans presence in the group is very symbolic. To me Bill Evans playing style is indicative of the stoic, statuesque, resistant-to-change nature of traditional jazz. To counter that Miles brought in high-energy young players who knew how to play rock, funk, all with an understanding of jazz. It was Miles plan of the breaking down of the barrier that the traditionalists had built. Miles Davis is a poster child for non-conformists everywhere.
except it's a different Bill Evans in this group (not the piano player you were thinking about)
Symbolic
Beautiful Stern solo. Love the in and out of the walking groove with Marcus at 8:28 (etc.).
This is unusually fun for Miles Davis. I like the main theme groove, and the way he's playing here. Good to see and hear.
I'd really like to hear Marcus 'play bass' again. I love his 'lead' stuff, but a work with him as the back bone again would be great.
he did what he was told.
He still plays as the backbone to this day. He does tons of studio stuff that most people don't know about. He was Luther Vandross' bassist for a while.
I love Marcus Miller ❤️😍
Everythime when Im listening to Miles it's like the 1st time...Unique Genius
I was one of the luckiest man to see them live in Paris... Mike Stern was impressive, so do they all of them, Miles so great as usual...
Miles, marcus, mike's...wonderful
Freakin juicy audio re-touch up... Marcus especially! Hands down one of the greatest fusion ensembles EVER.
the "We Want Miles" band.Lovely!
Amazing performance! Great music!
Mike " Fat time" Stern with a Strat hmmm . thanks for posting .
Great Artist from the USA Midwest Detroit and ST Louis CHI Town
timeless
This is soo incredible! Great upstart band when the Miles returned.
Al Foster is dealin'! Everything starts with him at the bottom
Al Foster is killing it!!!!
All of Miles' drummers up to that point were legendary. Al Foster was the last in that class.
Mr MILLER A REAL Down to earth Genteman.Kool and the gangI
Thanks...
che musica ragazzi pelle d'oca!!!!!
I had the good fortune to see this band a couple of times, including their first gig; the warm up date in Boston prior to their "debut" at JVC NYin '81. Walking up to the the club (Kix, which one of the tunes on "We Want Miles" was named for) and seeing Miles' yellow Ferrari parked outside gave me chills, although they were much better in '82. Evans is at the absolute bottom of the list of Miles' great horn players that came before and after him, but the rest of the band was outstanding.
Bill have a unique and melodic way of playing.
Don't agree with you
If you listen to Mike Stern tell the story Fat Time was the nickname Miles gave to Stern when he was a member of the band, because he liked his sense of time. Also, Pat Metheny, who was Stern's teacher at one time, also loved Stern's feel and time. It's one of the things that makes Mike stand out and a HUGE part of his talent. I was hoping this was a Davis/Stern video. Still good though.
I will give it a six I loved the melody . " I feel like a thief"
jammin!
You go boys!
I agree with you that Evans is pissed at Marcus for getting out of pocket. I'm sure it was that in-your-face 'Jaco' tone Marcus was using along with the lick that miffed him. It used to be the dull thud of the upright allowed horn players to just run amok. By introducing the more aggressive sounding electric bass, Miles forced a lot of cats to rethink their playing and step out of the comfort zones of 'traditional' jazz. Way to go Miles! Innovation and Evolution is a good thing for all music.
Marcus did no wrong!!! very inventive
Delightful
Miles' mouthpiece from the 1970's. It was used for the wah-wah pedal. The only reason he used that mouthpiece during his "comeback" is because story has it that he lost his "straight" one. This one was molded from the Gustav mouthpiece one he used from the late 50's on. So as time progressed from he eventually got a new mouthpiece made around 1983-4.
...and he said that he heard music moving in short phrases in that Quincy Troupe autobiography. The main returning melody here is so simple but so juicy - especially because of the way that the rhythm section and Bill Evans are playing with Miles when they come back to it...super cool, super Miles.
mike stern !... groove!
che band ragazzi !!!!!
On fire
The blessed ones.
Che bellezza!
@Zeemanuk
i wasn't even alive, when this here was recorded... i was born like 10 years later...
I always thought MM was born with his hat...
He was. Took it of out of respect for Miles on this one. LOL
@@mixxwire4758 Like most, he only started wearing it after going bald. Started with a baseball cap in the early 90s and then transitioned to the hat.
@@silverdroid Very interesting comments here ! All my life, I was looking for such musical comments ! Marcus Miller didn't wear a hat when he played with Miles. It is absolutely fundamuntal to know that !
@@ernestcircus6101 At "Under The Sky" in Japan 1990, he wore a baseball cap, but that was for his "Marcus Miller Project". Miles died the following year.
@@silverdroid Thank you very much for this valuable information. And did Marcus also wear a mustache in 1990 ?
Miller was really exciting back then.
I just went to see Mike Stern and Bill Evans last week. Spoiler - they were smokin’. Rhythm section was Dennis Chambers and Gary Grainger
this song is fuckin fantastic holy shit how heavy can it get
All stars
whaaaat a look Miles!!!!
for me mike stern is a bit underrated. i saw him many times now and i think he dont get the attention he deserves.
@ Daniel Roth, Mike Stern is a legend!
I do think this was his coming out party and this tour/recording was his best playing...
I've seen him live 3 times and he is on of the most original an innovative guitarists I have seen and heard.
Hmm, always thought he was out of place in that band. Never fit in if you ask me. I think particularly with Marcus Miller there was no click at all.
@@klapsigaarenbasgitaar1931 might be true. I prefer his work with Blood Sweat and Tears and his solo records.
Barry Finnerty is my Fav guitarist Miles used
Merveilleux Miles
God bless you Marcus...
Yes
AL FOSTER AL FOSTER AL FOSTER
BRAVO
ma chi è bravo
Al Foster is laying it down. Everybody follows suit. Stern looked different then.
Wow. Totally different from the evil shuffle Fat Time on the record (my favorite Mike Stern solo of all time btw). Not sure I like this version as much. Although thank you for the rare footage of this band.
Yeah, the Man With The Horn version has the perfect groove and perfect tempo, there was no need to speed it up so much. Also same as you, my all time favorite Mike Stern solo is on that version. I will say Bill Evans sounds better on this live rendition tho.
@@satishrobertson8771 The thing that makes Miles so much more interesting than 99.9999 musicians on earth is that he does a masterpiece like So What, or Fat Time - and then shrugs it off and refuses to even think of playing the same thing the same way. I can listen to Miles over Mozart, Luis Armstrong, or Beatles.
Just came across this. All I want to say is, yes I was at this gig,
the point is 'how loud they played', you had to shout to speak
with the person next to you. Ain't joking!
Hello Rick, This is a great video post!! A big Miles Davis and Marcus Miller fan!! I have the Man with a Horn CD [ Album back in the day] I highly recommend reading TWO good books, The autobiography on Miles Davis and The Last Miles!! They will provide great insight to Miles and his mind and the music!! Today, Marcus Miller has a current CD titled AFRODEEZIA, and the same Mino Cinelu is playing percussion on the CD!!
Lastly, I want to say to those silly people with childlike post-respect the music.. That's why U sit in UR small apartment leaving Neil Young/ Kyra comments.. I bet U Mike Stern don't work a 8-5 gig and sit in brick and mortar building hating their job[s]!! Peace
Wow! M & MM.
Amazing that this take seems twice as fast as the album take but is within two seconds of the album version in terms of time.
Cocaine was really good back then, not as stepped on
@@damainmang6362 Miles always played stuff way faster live than on record.
4:45 the drop is beyond funky! NICE
BELLES PENSEES MILES DAVIS ..... KIFFF !!!
He was not well physically at this point, but was moving around much better than he was in '81.
잘보고감니다 ~~
It,s ashame Jaco and Miles never recorded together??
Miller was a musician who sounded great with and without Miles.
Unlike some others - who are pure genius with Miles, but just sound like pointless pyrotechnics without him.
Marcus "The Groove Setter" Miller.
@impala327
Coltrane was during the Bebop area where it was important to play a lot of notes.
I think Miles Davis got that idea from that famous critic who said that the main problem of guitarist are they play too much notes.
Why'd they focus on the guitardist's face when Marcus was playing the fat chops? I'll never, EVER understand the camerawork of most concert videos....
Man, this version is fast, doesn't have that slow stanky groove of the album version. Still, the playing from everyone is incredible.
Some people just dont know good groove when they hear it!!!!
A Question pls: this video is taken from the dvd "Live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London 1982"?
It's very good!! there is also a superbe solo by Mike Stern...Thks vm...
復帰間もない頃だぜ!✨😍ナイス👊😃💕
2018年に聴いてもめちゃくちゃかっこいい
Sounding Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet here in 2011 ------ i was born in the wrong time -------- i was -5 was this was recorded
2019
I mean if you're going to become a jazz musician and you share your name with one of the most famous and influential jazz musicians you might as well use a different name because that jazz legend's name will overshadow your name
Stern looks like a cross between David Gilmour and Dim (from the movie 'A Clockwork Orange)
Marcus without a hat!
🎶💟🤗🌱🌿💙
🌱🌸😃💙
@bassje01 Well, actually it was my "very evolved dutch sense of humor" :-P
Ik zal ze doorgeven! Vette clips trouwens (pentatonic rulezzzz)
Nice, nice, also cool that Marcus Miller is about 14 years old in this clip :-p
as in an electric one? like the kind on a guitar?
.👍
Anyone see Marcus Miller in this vid?
Kyra Sedgwicks bro can really play that guitar!!!!
Why??? Did it have to end so soon.
round trip
When Marcus Miller didn’t only do slap and was musical
I agree. Nowadays he seems to be focused more on slapped/plucked ornamentations than on a solid bass groove.
from - the man with the horn - album??
@jokeob Depends. Do you feel like that about all Miles' work? If so, it's something in his style that's throwing you - and anyone who says there's nothing to work through in "getting it," whatever that means, is arrogant. If not, then maybe it's the condition he was in emotionally/musically at the time. Listen to the studio version and see what happens.
In the end, all the "why" of "liking" something is crap. It just speaks. Everything else is just trying to find a way to be comfy with it.
Alessandro de Souza
So miles Davis had two bill Evans in his bands at two different points in time
shit ..... and you have 2 hands, what' their name? asshole
time travel my boy drake on congs 3:15
whats up with miles mouthpiece?
@bobvanluijt Shame one me that I as a real Dutchman didn't got that :-)
Zie je denk ik wel op de bruiloft, ik mag in de dienst spelen...
Woops my bad. I posted elsewhere that I was disappointed Stern wasn't in the video. But there he is......
ok , the title says ,,,Marcus Miller w/ Miles Davis,,, MARCUS appears only for a few seconds,,,ehhhhmm
Marcus Miller nel 82 aveva già il suo Fender signature?
@bobvanluijt Do you mean he LOOKS like 14? Because he is born in 1959.
Groeten aan Job ;-)
@bassje01 haha, leuk. Zie je dan!
