I make my own paper filters by cutting the filters for large drip coffee makers in half, making a cone and the folding the bottom of the cone to make it fit the pod. It's less expensive, I get 300 filters at my dollar store for $2, so it makes 600, as opposed to nearly $10 for 100 of the preformed filters.

A little bit of sediment is not going to kill you (heck, you are advised by doctors to take in a lot vegetable/fruit fibers, oops, wood fiber) while saving all the trouble and money. And if you absolutely do not like it, just discard the last sip of coffee that have the most sediment in them.

The problem I had with my first unit was this: When attempting to brew a cup of coffee, the unit would either keep brewing until the coffee was undrinkable or it would not run long enough and the coffee produced was way too strong. I cleaned the unit as best I could but it did not help. So in the end it was just too much trouble to get a good cup of coffee out of it, so I decided to replace it with a new one, which has been working great since I unpacked it.

If you're old enough to have routinely drunk coffee from an old-fashioned percolator, you would have gotten into the habit of always leaving a little coffee in the bottom of your cup. It's been 60 years, but I do this to this day.
I have the electric percolator. I always line the cup that holds the grinds with a paper filter which keeps the coffee clean & makes cleanup so easy, just remove the paper filter holding the used grinds and place in the garbage, rinse and you are finished.
Great video! I went online and found refillable Kpods in 10 packs for about the cost of 3 Kpods at the supermarket. My husband fills two week's supply at a time, we are retired so time is no big issue, but he has gotten very good at it. The nifty cup funnel works quite well. As far as the sediment issue, we just leave the last two drops in the cup. If you ever go to a Greek home, BEWARE! They spoon coffee grounds into the cup and pour hot water over it, then serve the coffee with the grounds in it. Only drink about 1/2 of the cup and don't stir it up.
I was wondering if pre-filling a couple weeks worth of k-cups go "stale" by the time you use the last ones? Just because the reusable cups are not sealed. Thank you

I am so glad I came across this video, I was looking at the paper filters in the store and my first thought was "Well, why would I need the paper filters when I have the mesh on the reusable pods?" I never use those filters with mine......Iv'e had some sittingon the counter for several years... You don't need them....They are too much trouble. & it works better without them..I've been doing this for years, as I've had serval Keurigs( Ever since they first came out.). The main thing is the closing of the pods, it has to be clean. I have coffee measurers for the re-usable pods, it really helps with the measuring of the coffee.If you get some on the top , just wipe it off with a paper towel.and also, I use the second button, not the first., this guy likes really weak coffee, you can see through his coffee! That first button doesn't fill the coffee mug And for the larger cup, I use the 3rd button. I use the top one. And, also you can put the pods in the dishwasher, every so often. Aways make sure they are rinsed out really good...and wipe the coffee off with the paper towel, if you get too much coffee in the pod......
If you use the strong mode on the reusable k-cup with the filter you may not get the water overflow. It slows down your brew time, but I think the flavor is worth the little wait. Then it won't be trying to force the water through as fast. I don't use the filter, but I always brew strong. I also recommend just taking the reusable k-cup out and letting it dry. It makes clean up so much easier for me. I also have a basket made for baby bottle pieces in my dishwasher. I throw the reusable k-cups in there to wash them.

Note that when the first Keurig machines came out, the reusable cups like these sold at that time required that you remove an insert into which the K-cup normally sits, in effect allowing a larger replaceable cup. The use of pre-ground Folgers coffee as shown here probably yields a thin cup of coffee which tastes worse than something you'd get in a 24-hour dinner - yuck! I bought an original machine on the spur of the moment based on an in-store demo around Christmas about 10 years ago. Used with regular K-cups, the coffee was better than the burned office coffee I was trying to avoid, so happy to have it. After a while, I started taking my freshly ground coffee from home every day or two, using a refillable cup. Apart from being a pain in the ass to clean for reuse, that cup system worked fine and gave coffee with a much better taste than K-cups. There were no filters then for the reuse cups, so a bit of sediment was routine. The only negative issue from the Keurig came from having very hard water in our area, which caused excess calcium deposits to form - more difficult to remove than Keurig's maintenance instructions suggest.
I use the K cup for a month now. At first I used the filters for it but then I started using it without and the taste was much better without plus I never get sediment in my coffee. Also I use the Keurig Duo.
The Bunn coffee taste smoother because it's in contact with the grinds longer and the water is destributed over a larger area. The water is fed under pressure very quickly in the K-Cups so it has less contact time with the coffee grinds and that makes it more acidic. Good video.

Absolutely right. paper filter required with reusable k cup. figured this out the hard way. i hate sediment. thanks! a few years ago, tiny filters were hard to find.
We use the filters with the reusable pods but push the filter down a bit more then you did so as to have less grounds stick to the underside of the lid. Also, carefully wipe off the needle in the Keurig so as to keep it from getting clogged. That will also keep the coffee's great taste last longer. Ours has the water filter option to which we also use bottled drinking water instead of our tap water which is run through a salt pellet type water softener.
I bought a stainless steel reusable k-cup. I haven't tested it out yet. Today your YT came into my feeds. I so enjoyed your testing out the 4 variables. Something tells me I probably will have to buy the filters to eliminate the sediments. Thank you so much for ur demonstration.
Thanks for the video! one suggestion to see sediment is to pour your final cups of coffee through a paper filter. I also like the reusable pods ( waste less plastic and fresher coffee grounds because I can grind my own, PLUS MUCH cheaper) and I used to cut my own filters and wrap them around the inside of my VUE pods ( a VUE is a Keurig pot that is larger than a K cup) this model did not last more than 2-3 years but did many varieties of brewing styles. The VUE pods do NOT have a bottom screen; the exit is on the side I believe, so I only have to wrap the home made filters around the inside walls. I would buy a pack of 100 cone shaped filters, split them open at the seam draw a template for 4 curved shaped filters, then but 10 or so one top of each other and cut them all at once to produce 40 or 50 filters to use in the next few weeks. This may sound like too much work for most people, but I do not like the sediment in my coffee and I like to save $$ and not buy those extra filters you insert, so everyone to their own choices... Now that I received a new Keurig-Duo as a present that uses regular pods I with have to figure out how to put part of my cut filter to cover the bottom screen; I guess I can always place the cone filter right on the top of my coffee mug and trap the sediment that way, but you use one filter for each cup. Sorry for the long rant on this... maybe someone will get something useful out of it...

that is a great question, Yeah a small 5 cup coffee maker is very simple and would work great. but if you only have a Keurig then this is a good option, thank for watching!!!
Finally! Someone says to use the 6-ounce setting. For the store-bought K-Cups, I make a 10-ounce cup. Tastes great! But with the reusable, I have just been making weak, brown water.. Extremely disappointing! If one uses the same coffee, I wonder what the difference is? (I've even opened a store-bought K-Cup and poured the coffee into a reusable pod. Result? Weak coffee!)
Great video, thank you! I find that if the Keurig is fuller with water it pushes more water into the brew for a few cups. The lower the water level, the less water in the coffee. It's not a huge difference, but something to be aware of.
There is one thing (which I do for myself) that I never have seen during any Keurig demonstration. That is the fact that you can make tea in the Keurig by just balling up your favorite teabag and placing it into the Keurig where you would normally put the Kcup. Makes a perfect cup of tea every time.

Great video, Dad, as usual. I must get some Folgers! I have the purple K-cup basket and have used other coffee in it and it works just fine. I like this way, too, so if I want to make a half-caff I can do so very easily.
Thanks for the video! I'm getting my first reusable k cup and I'm super excited. This really helped me out! Make sure in the future you compost your coffee grounds! They create methane when they enter landfills, which is an extremely dangerous greenhouse gas associated with food waste. You could even just throw it into a bush or something!
I do get a small bit of sediment when I use the reusable kcup, but my coffee comes out good. It definitely depends on the quality of coffee and if it's dark roast or medium roast at least for me. Mine ends up pretty dark. I can see the filter being a good thing, just seems like more trouble to go through than I want. I also fill as much coffee as I can in that kcup, not to the top, though. Makes it slightly stronger, not a lot, but every bit helps. I like green mountain coffee like dark magic or Nantucket blend if I am not using the reusable kcup. Death wish is good as is Starbucks dark roasts, they have different ones that are good. One last one I love that might surprise you is Barnies, Santa's white Christmas. Get that at publix grocery store.

Second...perfect pod now has a metal reusable coffee pod. Have you thought about making a video about that? I would love to hear what you think. I think it may work better for tea. Third...I have the reusable coffee pod that is in your video. I have been using it for a month now. I have noticed the small amount sediment at the bottom of my cup. I will try it with the filter. Fourth...I did not know there was a set ( pod with scooper). I think the scooper is a great idea. It acts like a funnel and prevents spilling grounds onto the sides of the reusable pod.

I really enjoyed your video. I have tried several times to use a reusable K cup and failed miserably. But now I know why. I would pack as much ground coffee into the reusable K cup thinking it would make it stronger just as I like it. Now I know that's not the way. Because of your video I will give it another go. So, let's bottom line this. If you're going to drink more than a 6oz cup, you'll not get optimum flavor from any K-cup. Second, the Bunn (yeah, they're still the best) still makes a better, smoother cup of coffee and (to me) with less hassle if you drink a larger or more cups. Third, if you don't want sediment/gunk in your coffee, you need a paper filter. FWIW, there are better reusable filters that don't seem to leak or have other problems, even with the paper filters OR, as you sit watching TV, trim the edges of the filters (you can do several at a time) so they don't overlap the rim of the reusable device. That way you get a good seal, no leaks, no random grounds. Good video.

This was just a hugely helpful vid ... and I saw another vid on this topic prior to this one, and I got almost no value from it whereas this one hit every topic I could've come up with a question on. Very big for me was, reading articles around the web, I was getting the impression that regular K-Cups were roughly equivalent to drinking unfiltered coffee, which I, personally, felt I didn't want to do. This video gave the lie to those articles. I lovvvvvvved when you (a) showed the inside of a regular K-Cup and showed it did have a filter within it and (b) you carefully poured the cup of regular K-Cup coffer out and provided a really helpful camera angle to show whether there was sediment left at the bottom of the cup (there wasn't).
Thank you. Generally, I really like my reusable K-cups. Two things to note: (1) Watch for the side screens to blow out at the edge. When they do, it's time for a new cup. (2) I do find the hinged lid to be a bit of a pain in the neck. I had a lid break off once, and I found the separate lid to be much more convenient. Now I cut the lid off as soon as I open a new cup.
Thanks; I was gifted a large bag of Starbucks whole coffee beans and used the machine next to the one you used for the demo. It spilled all over and there were coffee particles in the water reservoir. I think I could have ground it too fine and filled the filter too much! Just found your channel. Thank you. We have tried many refillable pods and found the Perfect Pod EZ-Cup to be best. It is all we use and the design avoids that water overflow.
I buy whole beans and grind them fresh for each cup. Its a little more work but the taste is much better. I use the paperless grind holder to safe money on the paper filters. I do have some left over drip coffee paper filters that I might cut up to see how that works.
I just started working in an office that has a giant coffee machines that makes about 15 cups at a time, and a Keurig machine. So thats what brings me here before I get the kcups. My caffeine is forever in your debt.

Some k-cup filters are different where the bottom isn't recessed inwards like your filter which allows you to use more coffee, but not by much. There are two gaps on the sides for the bottom needle to rest into so those filters have to be positioned right before you close the unit. Once it lays flat like yours does 6:15 you're good to go. 16:45 of course there is no sediment from the coffee maker brew since you poured it from a pot into another cup, if there was any sediment it would still be in the pot that was probably sitting there after you used the Kureg 3 times. After all you didn't mention what kind of filter you used on the normal coffee maker. I used to use reusable coffee mesh filters in a normal Mr. Coffee machine, and there was always sediment at the bottom of the pot, but it didn't always get into my cup, especially on the first two pours. Also I'm curious what would happen if you used only the paper filter, with out the plastic reusable k-cup? Would it be a disaster, or can you brew a decent cup with just the paper filter?

I wanted to see a deconstructed pod and your video added a twist w/ the Walmart replacement so very interesting. Just to share that maybe you can bring the generic pod to the coffee spoon and then turn it to spill the coffee so no need to worry about coffee grains on parts they shouldn't be. Thanks very much.
Been here done this. The problem, you now have to deal with the grounds. You can tap it in the trash, but you still need to rinse it every time. K cups are convenient and what you pay for. Secondly, finding good ground coffee.

Yeah I found the coffee taste a little better without the paper filter.
When I would use my reusable k pod I would brew a large coffee and always find it very watery but now I understand why so thank you! Great video 👍

I bought a stainless steel reusable pod on Amazon, lasts basically forever unlike the plastic ones.
We use the filters with the reusable pods but push the filter down a bit more then you did so as to have less grounds stick to the underside of the lid. Also, carefully wipe off the needle in the Keurig so as to keep it from getting clogged. That will also keep the coffee's great taste last longer. Ours has the water filter option to which we also use bottled drinking water instead of our tap water which is run through a salt pellet type water softener.

Thanks for the video! one suggestion to see sediment is to pour your final cups of coffee through a paper filter. I also like the reusable pods ( waste less plastic and fresher coffee grounds because I can grind my own, PLUS MUCH cheaper) and I used to cut my own filters and wrap them around the inside of my VUE pods ( a VUE is a Keurig pot that is larger than a K cup) this model did not last more than 2-3 years but did many varieties of brewing styles. The VUE pods do NOT have a bottom screen; the exit is on the side I believe, so I only have to wrap the home made filters around the inside walls. I would buy a pack of 100 cone shaped filters, split them open at the seam draw a template for 4 curved shaped filters, then but 10 or so one top of each other and cut them all at once to produce 40 or 50 filters to use in the next few weeks. This may sound like too much work for most people, but I do not like the sediment in my coffee and I like to save $$ and not buy those extra filters you insert, so everyone to their own choices... Now that I received a new Keurig-Duo as a present that uses regular pods I with have to figure out how to put part of my cut filter to cover the bottom screen; I guess I can always place the cone filter right on the top of my coffee mug and trap the sediment that way, but you use one filter for each cup. Sorry for the long rant on this... maybe someone will get something useful out of it...

Great video, thank you! I find that if the Keurig is fuller with water it pushes more water into the brew for a few cups. The lower the water level, the less water in the coffee. It's not a huge difference, but something to be aware of.

There is one thing (which I do for myself) that I never have seen during any Keurig demonstration. That is the fact that you can make tea in the Keurig by just balling up your favorite teabag and placing it into the Keurig where you would normally put the Kcup. Makes a perfect cup of tea every time.

Thanks for the video! I'm getting my first reusable k cup and I'm super excited. This really helped me out! Make sure in the future you compost your coffee grounds! They create methane when they enter landfills, which is an extremely dangerous greenhouse gas associated with food waste. You could even just throw it into a bush or something!

I do get a small bit of sediment when I use the reusable kcup, but my coffee comes out good. It definitely depends on the quality of coffee and if it's dark roast or medium roast at least for me. Mine ends up pretty dark. I can see the filter being a good thing, just seems like more trouble to go through than I want. I also fill as much coffee as I can in that kcup, not to the top, though. Makes it slightly stronger, not a lot, but every bit helps. I like green mountain coffee like dark magic or Nantucket blend if I am not using the reusable kcup. Death wish is good as is Starbucks dark roasts, they have different ones that are good. One last one I love that might surprise you is Barnies, Santa's white Christmas. Get that at publix grocery store.
I agree I have found the paper filters can be a little more tricky and I think the sediment adds another layer of taste to the coffee that I like. Thanks for sharing your story and coffee Journey!!! I love to hear everyone's story!!

Second...perfect pod now has a metal reusable coffee pod. Have you thought about making a video about that? I would love to hear what you think. I think it may work better for tea.
Third...I have the reusable coffee pod that is in your video. I have been using it for a month now. I have noticed the small amount sediment at the bottom of my cup. I will try it with the filter.
Fourth...I did not know there was a set ( pod with scooper). I think the scooper is a great idea. It acts like a funnel and prevents spilling grounds onto the sides of the reusable pod.

Not sure it can do tea or not. They all will give you a little sediment unless you use a paper filter.

I use those, and add a paper filter (sold separately) inside, so easy to keep clean that way.

I really enjoyed your video. I have tried several times to use a reusable K cup and failed miserably. But now I know why. I would pack as much ground coffee into the reusable K cup thinking it would make it stronger just as I like it. Now I know that's not the way. Because of your video I will give it another go. So, let's bottom line this. If you're going to drink more than a 6oz cup, you'll not get optimum flavor from any K-cup. Second, the Bunn (yeah, they're still the best) still makes a better, smoother cup of coffee and (to me) with less hassle if you drink a larger or more cups. Third, if you don't want sediment/gunk in your coffee, you need a paper filter.
FWIW, there are better reusable filters that don't seem to leak or have other problems, even with the paper filters OR, as you sit watching TV, trim the edges of the filters (you can do several at a time) so they don't overlap the rim of the reusable device. That way you get a good seal, no leaks, no random grounds.

Thank you, I was getting water overflowing in my Keurig standard, and I didn’t know why. I will try sealing the refillable K cup better, and making it seat better in the holder.
This was just a hugely helpful vid ... and I saw another vid on this topic prior to this one, and I got almost no value from it whereas this one hit every topic I could've come up with a question on. Very big for me was, reading articles around the web, I was getting the impression that regular K-Cups were roughly equivalent to drinking unfiltered coffee, which I, personally, felt I didn't want to do. This video gave the lie to those articles. I lovvvvvvved when you (a) showed the inside of a regular K-Cup and showed it did have a filter within it and (b) you carefully poured the cup of regular K-Cup coffer out and provided a really helpful camera angle to show whether there was sediment left at the bottom of the cup (there wasn't).

Thank you. Generally, I really like my reusable K-cups. Two things to note: (1) Watch for the side screens to blow out at the edge. When they do, it's time for a new cup. (2) I do find the hinged lid to be a bit of a pain in the neck. I had a lid break off once, and I found the separate lid to be much more convenient. Now I cut the lid off as soon as I open a new cup.

Good point! Most gas caps with a retainer are annoying to me too ...and babies aren't likely to swallow a gas cap anyway

Thanks; I was gifted a large bag of Starbucks whole coffee beans and used the machine next to the one you used for the demo. It spilled all over and there were coffee particles in the water reservoir. I think I could have ground it too fine and filled the filter too much! Will try it again after I get some of the paper filters. Thanks much.

I buy whole beans and grind them fresh for each cup. Its a little more work but the taste is much better. I use the paperless grind holder to safe money on the paper filters. I do have some left over drip coffee paper filters that I might cut up to see how that works.

I just started working in an office that has a giant coffee machines that makes about 15 cups at a time, and a Keurig machine. So thats what brings me here before I get the kcups. My caffeine is forever in your debt.

The use of the filter gives a longer resident time. Better taste than without the filter.
Some k-cup filters are different where the bottom isn't recessed inwards like your filter which allows you to use more coffee, but not by much. There are two gaps on the sides for the bottom needle to rest into so those filters have to be positioned right before you close the unit. Once it lays flat like yours does 6:15 you're good to go.
16:45 of course there is no sediment from the coffee maker brew since you poured it from a pot into another cup, if there was any sediment it would still be in the pot that was probably sitting there after you used the Kureg 3 times. After all you didn't mention what kind of filter you used on the normal coffee maker. I used to use reusable coffee mesh filters in a normal Mr. Coffee machine, and there was always sediment at the bottom of the pot, but it didn't always get into my cup, especially on the first two pours.
Also I'm curious what would happen if you used only the paper filter, with out the plastic reusable k-cup? Would it be a disaster, or can you brew a decent cup with just the paper filter?
No there is too much pressure to use just a paper filter it will make a mess.
I don't own a Keurig. Seems like a lot of trouble just to make a cup of coffee. Mr. Coffee may be old fashioned but it works for me.
Just had my best coffee ever, following your directions with my Kc up. Also set it at 6 oz cup. So good. Great presentation!

I wanted to see a deconstructed pod and your video added a twist w/ the Walmart replacement so very interesting. Just to share that maybe you can bring the generic pod to the coffee spoon and then turn it to spill the coffee so no need to worry about coffee grains on parts they shouldn't be. Thanks very much.

Been here done this. The problem, you now have to deal with the grounds. You can tap it in the trash, but you still need to rinse it every time. K cups are convenient and what you pay for. Secondly, finding good ground coffee.
