Some filmmakers would've been playing music but you brought out more of my senses by just leaving the natural sounds audible. I could feel the wind, smell the fire and taste the whisky, Bravo!
Love that this is so raw and not gimmicky in any way. No dumb over the top music. No crazy transitions. No text. No narration. Just footage done right. THIS is cinematography. Thanks for the inspiration 🙏
This "simple" footage just kept me immersed in the story for 15 mins straight and gave me such a sense of relaxation. This is ASMR for the eyes, thanks!
Every piece of sensory perception was touched in this one. I’m from the country, small town living and this was one of the greatest videos I’ve watched. Nostalgia, comfort, warmth. Bravo. Masterpiece
Grew up watching Westerns, camping regularly and spending copious amounts of time hiking, bird watching and sitting by fires. This is one of the most visually and audibly satisfying videos I've ever watched. It's like a hug and a warm cup of coffee.
Me five! very curious about how you were able to film without noise. I'm a recent R5C owner experimenting with this tonight for sure. Tips would be great!!
Soooo...... this is why I love the outdoors. A fire, whiskey, wind, sky, life. This video is a representation of how I hope everyone's 2023 goes. The way life intended. Calm, happy, connected to the earth. Happy 2023 everyone.
I could have watched this video for hours because it was so relaxing to just hear the natural sounds from everything that was going on. I literally felt like I was right there in that moment and the rest of the world just disappeared. Thank you Pete for starting 2023 with this masterpiece.
no checking the phone, checking notifications, just focused, meditative tasks. this has to be one of the best things a person can do for peace of mind 😍
I could not turn away from this. The color, what's he going to do next and the relaxing calm of it all damn well done. Probably THE top video you ever put out.
I just wanna say thank you to the person who inspired me into photography, It's been 3 and a half years since i saw your video, since then i started to shoot. Even if you don't know me, you're the one who's been with me since then just throughout your video
I really like the style of this video. It’s like what I imagined I was doing around the campfire as a kid, and what I would rather be doing now more than almost anything. Thanks Pete for this little slice of peace and contentment you worked on.
So refreshing to just watch a video for its beauty. No music, no talking, no tutorials, no frills. Thanks for inspiring me to push myself to become better at my craft!
I can't remember ever being so annoyed at youtube advertisements interrupting what is truly a stunning artistic masterpiece. How is it possible that I smell those steaks, taste that coffee, and feel the heat of that fire? I want that life! I need to know more about that story. This video proves that true art is not just about what you put in, but what you choose to leave out. You've sculpted a visual and auditory masterpiece Pete, pulling the viewers senses into the mindfulness of the moment. Congratulations, you are a rare talent!
I was glued to this the entire time. Sound design was on point, not to mention the adjoining cuts that matched perfectly when he was chopping and throwing wood into the fire. And loved that you and Kurt got involved and on screen right at the end.
That grabbing the jacket part was both unexpected and beautiful. Totally thought it was another person and turned out a jacket. I think this shot would be perfect for a thriller or horror film. So good. Also sound design and coloring is incredible as per usual ❤
Been following you for a long time now, and this has to be one of your most creative pieces yet! The story telling is awesome, and the color grading fits the piece perfectly. You are such an inspiration.
I've been following PM for years and thought exactly the same! Most creative piece and most beautiful piece I've seen yet! Along with The story of Maureen Lake (In "The Shot"), this has to be one of my favourite pieces!
I wish I could like this a million times! I love that there’s no music. This film is so immersive. I can feel the cold air and smell the fire. The ground shakes when a log is cut and falls. This is one of your best ones yet! Keep it up Pete!
Watched it 3 times now Pete. As a creator myself, this was such a visual and auidable masterpiece, so simple and calming but not simple to shoot and edit , but you killed this piece, 2023 is gonna be lit...
I absolutely love the color grading on this. It gives that "rustic" feel that absolutely should be in a wilderness film. And I agree with some of the other comments, no background music was 1000% the right choice. Well done, sir.
Pete, (AND KIRK!) you guys NAILED this. Absolutely phenomenal. It really felt like I was there with you. Visuals. Sound design. Story telling. All there. Bravo.
Everything about this video is perfection. The crackling sounds of the fire, the wind in the trees, the sound of the axe cutting into the wood. Incredible work Peter!!
Thanks Peter, I'm on UA-cam because of You! I binge watched a lot of your videos from 2016 and you inspired me to get out there and create something. I might not have your photography skills I can't edit like you but in my heart I try to beat all fears coming my way. I'm now embarking on a new venture. I wanna travel the world and document my life. I appreciate your Work brother. Love from Tanzania 🇹🇿, East Africa.
This was a beautiful cinematic piece peter. The sound was sooo on point felt like I was there throughout. I know content like this doesn't usually appeal to a very large audience and they're usually hooked to quick and easy to digest visuals, so I thank you for taking the step to actually making something that's smooth and steady, and requires focus
I could watch this over and over. I love that there's no music played. It makes you feel like you're there being able to hear the sounds of the environment.
This video was so beautifully done! The sound, to the shots, to the flow everything just screamed film making with such a simple yet compelling story. I hate camping but this made me want to be there. Different style then normal but i absolutely loved it! Hope there is more of this in the future!
I felt like It shouldn't end at all, how Pete does it is beyond me tbh, every new year you'll just start with something special and raise even your own standard, the breakdown of this shoot, BTS and editing workflow would legit be a masterclass !! Can't wait for what you'll do with you next intro, lovely to see, well done Pete, your work definitely gonna be here long after you're gone, am happy I got to experience you create that legacy.
Brought back memories of being a boy scout many many years ago. Before even a walkman. No music just the sound of the wild. Cannot imagine what kids today do when they are in the wild with all their gadgets. Not sure many young folks have even heard the sounds from this video. Very well done and thanks for the time to do this.
Brother, this is beyond top tier. I just watched a 15-minute mini movie with no spoken dialogue and couldn't get enough. Probably helps I'm a bushcraft junkie but still. I love this video.
What a fantastic way of expressing the feeling and thought one may feel during an experience like this. Not the mention the production quality is like i’m watching a film. This was truly a pleasure to watch, a captivating ASMR experience.
My 18 month old woke up early from her nap while I was in the middle of this video. She sat captivated as much as I was. It enchanted us both. We sat on the couch, cuddling, listening to the crackles, and sizzles. Watch out Blippi, Uncle Pete has my toddler's attention. Thank goodness. 🤣
Damn. This makes me want to go build a log cabin, build fires and drink whiskey. Well done Pete. I also love that there was no music, just the sounds of everything makes this beautiful.
holy shit this was incredible to watch and be immersed into! I would consider this a masterpiece in my eyes, from the smooth flowing cinematography, excellent and surreal ambiance sounds and colours, timing of shots, the list goes on... I was completely immersed and I felt like I was truly there in the moment. Excellent work, brother!
This just reminded me of an old documentary I watched as a kid called "Alone in the Wilderness". It came out in 2003 or 2004 but the guy literally vlogged the whole thing on film in 1968! They eventually made it into the film after he came back from his adventure 30 years later.
I started my photo/video journey 5 years ago with Peter McKinnon and stopped watching him about 3 years ago for whatever reason. I come back and remember that, of all the content I watch, his resonates most with my soul when he takes me on a trip like this. I love this.
This video perfectly captured the feeling of living life in the wilderness. The small rewards of a days’ work and the feeling of not wanting to be anywhere in the world but right there. I understood why this man lives this life as it’s in his blood. It brought a smile to my face and peace deep within that’s so real. This spoke to me deeply. Thank you Pete. I mean seriously, thank you.
I love the unfolding silent story here. How you know what's happening and why, then the next development happens. Feels really good to take this in. As compelling as any intense conflict in a drama/action movie yet not stressful. Sometimes I'm looking for movies or TV shows that are will hold me but not work me up - particularly on stressful days. Mr. Beast/Ted Lasso/etc show us that there is a demand for "nice". I think this demonstrates a demand for "calm" in filmmaking. Thank you and SO well done!
This is a stunningly beautiful example of the phrase, "less is more". My mouth is watering now, and I feel like I can smell the smoke in my clothes. Beautifully done.
Probably one of my favorite videos ever, with this one you feel the cold, the wind, the heat of the fire, ahhh I love the sound of the trees, how the wood pops on the bonfire and how someone already said, others would put some music but without you can feel it real. I love it, congratulations guys
Rustic. Ordinary. Simply complicated. The smell of the decaying bits on the forest floor even come through this film. I could feel the warmth of the fire when we got closer and the need for the jacket when elsewhere. Bringing us to this man's life and experiences is what you did. You made us live it for a moment. I counted the last few second in the darkness hoping that the :29 wouldn't come. Well done.
Do you ever forget that you're sitting at a computer for 15 minutes when a video comes on and you're mesmerized? Because same. Great work, this is spectacular

I have a dream that one day I can make a video just like this and Drink Coffee with Peter McKinnon, while talking about all of the epic shots that were filmed.
The Cinematography is just spectacular. You really did a great job showing us the story Peter, instead of telling us the story. This really is One of your best videos that you have done. Can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings from you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, for NOT adding music. This is so awesome by just being pure..... I luv it. I could see you in this type of life. And reverb on the coffe?? Nice......
Can I just go ahead and say..... The Sounds design on this only deserves to win awards for it....Holy CRap. As someone someone that goes camping and has been in the middle of nowhere by myself, this just brings it all back and is fantastic.
This video was absolutely breathtaking to watch. I've had it on repeat now for the past two hours. Every time I watch I take in something new and I'm instantly there in the woods. Smelling the fire, hearing the crackle of the logs, the breath of the wind. Amazing video. I get chills every single watch
Two things, one so glad the story went where I wanted it to when Peter walks into the shot to eat. Second it's so refreshing sometimes to see what Peters film making looks without talking about it.
This is so wholesome. From beginning to the end. Reminds me of the 1ST time I went camping with my uncle back home. From the cracking of the wood to hearing his foot kicking the fire. Awesome work Pete 10/10
Beyond gold stuff...the rare art of holding all your senses not just for the the time you see it but even long after. Absolutely love the magic of your cinema! ❤️
As others have said, I couldn't look away. It is a mesmerizing piece. It was a nice reminder of my younger days being outside camping and hiking and at times alone for days.
It was like having a 7 foot ghost out there with me. I have never felt more comfortable in front of a camera. Thank you🙏 Beautiful Film Pete!!!🙏🙏🙏
Dude you're an absolute badass!! I subscribed instantly, gonna have your videos playing all weekend
Bud you did perfect! Thanks for sharing your craft! Got a sub from me!
Subscribed immediately . It was so inspiring and comforting watching you work.
9:22 What knife you using there for the food prep, @Trustin?
what mic was used to capture all these goodies, for sound? Amazing! love this!
Some filmmakers would've been playing music but you brought out more of my senses by just leaving the natural sounds audible. I could feel the wind, smell the fire and taste the whisky, Bravo!
Love it!!!
That's the difference between "filmmakers" and tiktokers.
agreed
Yeah...really makes me rethink my work now. This seems to capture a much deeper tone.
Wow this was amazing!! The sounds and visuals! Beautiful!
Love that this is so raw and not gimmicky in any way. No dumb over the top music. No crazy transitions. No text. No narration. Just footage done right. THIS is cinematography. Thanks for the inspiration 🙏
Full of sound design
I was thinking the same. The sound effects are the music. None of the sounds in this video (or most of them anyway) were recorder at that time.
This "simple" footage just kept me immersed in the story for 15 mins straight and gave me such a sense of relaxation. This is ASMR for the eyes, thanks!

@@soundscape26 yeah but it’s the fact that he can do both

The blue print for creativity immersed in simplicity. Peter is the gold standard! Absolutely amazing...

That jacket scene, perfection 🤌 Everything about this was mesmerizing and beautiful. Amazing job!
The worst part of this was the end…as in I didn’t want it to be over! So peaceful.
Holy crap. Splitting wood, shaving tinder and lighting fire has never sounded more crisp. This is everything I ever wanted.
Wilderness ASMR!! What more do you need? Love the colors on this.
I don't know how you do it my friend, but it's perfect. No foreword, no music; just raw skill, showing in the life of my dream escape. A++.
