  • Last week, a young man walked into my office and told me that there is nothing more in life for him, than becoming a Marine. I noticed he had a tattoo on his elbow and mentioned to him that it would have to be removed for this to even be an option. Immediately, he said "I cannot remove this tattoo, it means too much to me". Made me wonder how many others talk the talk but when it comes down to really getting it, they are not willing to. If you truly want this, you must prepare yourself to go to the pits of hell and back- if need be. During my time as an OSO, I've seen many fail, actually Most. There are a few however, that I have seen come back from adversity, persist, and have claimed the title. Every single one of them has mentioned that it was all worth it in the end.
My advice- do not let your mind deter you from being a Marine. Fight or flight instinct is real and when things are not going your way, your mind will tell you to "flight". You must-you cannot.
Share any/all stories of your personal perseverance below. I'm curious to read about them. Feel free to contact me at any time.

When I showed up to meet my OSO, I was 30 lbs overweight, 32 years old, doing maybe 2 pullups, terrible crunches, and no chance at 3 miles. I worked at it for months. Eventually I got into OCS, graduated, and yes, all worth it.

Great words of advice needed now more than ever. Greetings from New Hampshire, Sir! I've been deep selected for OCC 235. Any/Every delay has just strengthened my resolve.

Sir, I really appreciate this video. I’m a 10 year Marine and I have slacked big time on my fitness and my other goals.

Just wanted to say thank you Sir. You are obviously not required to make these videos but you take time to do so in order to inspire and motivate others. Most of all you are real and honest. Your words will echo in my head on this difficulty journey to become a Marine Officer.

Thank you for this video sir, this candidate is currently working on getting exception to policy waivers for a few medical issues that were denied the first time around, while also dealing with some fresh achilles tendonitis. It all starts to add up and feel like it's weighing you down, however when you start to think about the "sweat equity" you talked about, this adversity turns into motivation, because it's all really nothing compared to how much work it's taken to even get to this point.

It became my goal to become a marine a few months ago. Unfortunately because of having autism on my medical record it’s halted and slowed down my goal. Next month I’ll be going to have psychological problems evaluations, and chances are I’ll come back clean and my recruiter will let me go in. I’d love to ask you about this stuff but unfortunately idk where to contact you, and you seem to have stopped uploading. But listen to this guy it’s good advice.

Weird... I've always been under the impression that if someone drops off due to something like "You're ten pound overweight" then they might not be a "Marine." Like I live abroad and upon getting back to the US, I'm going to talk to a recruiter. I've read in a lot of places that I may be too old, haha but what kind of Marine would I be if I took that for an answer, without actually checking with a recruiter, first?

Considering getting started on applying for ocs. Will marijuana use disqualify me if I meet every other standard for selection?

Tattoos do not make one unqualified to be a Marine. Count all the Marines with tattoos. Tell that to all the Marines that became Marines who had tattoos, to the Marines that died while serving with tattoos.
