Today was a historic day, the most expensive Koi in the world today was auctioned in Japan. 203 million Japanese yen converted 1.7 million USD. What do you think about this super high price?

Buyer name is Yingying Chung, Taiwanese, medias create the title name for her before name as Koi queen, which was the largest koi farm owner in Taiwan and primary agent for Japan. She won 11 grand prizes including 4 championships in Holland, which made her known as "Taiwan Koi Queen.

It was difficult to breed the top quality koi which they need to fulfil all the basic requirement for a koi including the selection of good bloodline, good water quality with the variety of minerals, environment conditions, continuous breed modification of koi and so on.
Crazy. I used to buy two year old koi at $200 per pop, imported to California from Japan when I had a pond. I knew that only half of them would survive due to immunity issues. The offspring of those surviving koi were strong as they were immune to local pathogens. And then I noticed that each koi had individual personalities that I learned to enjoy. After that I didn’t care what they looked like.
I’m telling ya one of my kin koi fish be flipping in the pond like she be playing.

She wasn't just 'any' Koi...she was the Grand Champion in 2018 if I am not mistaken in her markings. People buy whatever they feel passionate about...value is subjective :) But she certainly is beautiful!

@@michaellagonera929 I am certainly no expert but she is I believe a 3 step Kohaku. I refer mostly to the S shape pattern that she has on her middle Beni section and by which I personally recognise her.
Its so subjective. I've seen others I think are prettier. This one doesn't look like anything special personally speaking, as I find the colours too blocky. Extraordinarily over-the-top price but probably seen as an investment. Also notice how the photos appear to misrepresent it's hue, showing a deeper red than seen in the live videos. People are extremely compliant to becoming slaves in allowing themselves (in this case) to be dictated by show standards which in turn influences others, instead of using critical thinking.

It's the culture there is something special they have for this kind of fish. believe the luck that fish will bring.
Mad! Absolutely MAD! $2M+ for a Koi. This will never be my game. Beautiful yes, but $2M beautiful? It's all in the eye of the beholder. Of course, these are not merely for decoration, they are investments and most likely for resale. They most likely already have the buyer lined up.

Even though it was really big and nicely shaped, that fish wasn’t very nice looking. Maybe it was just the camera but the fish seemed more yellowy then milky white which is often a reason people buy. Not sure if it was worth almost 2 million dollars...
(But I do think that it was good other than that and the red was quite vibrant)

However many western koi keepers just are being outpriced by wealthy Asian businesses, and that’s a shame that loyal koi keepers just cannot afford highest quality koi. £1.3 million is just over the top. I saw this koi in the flesh at the 2017 AJKS when it won Grand Champion. 101cm is also not to be underestimated.....
