- My take on the APU from the Matrix movies. It's not 100% movie accurate as I made a few artistic changes, mainly to help with animation. I modelled this several years ago in high poly but always wanted to see if I could re-model and optimize it enough to work in real time. I also wanted to texture and animate it.
There's lots more I'd like to do like adding a pilot, and there's a few mistakes that need fixing but this project took a very long time and I need a break so I'm calling it done for now.
Everything was created in Blender amd Gimp.

Neat the apu's are just frames considering what happened to the guys in tanks and the such at the start of the war.
Yes In a real war I don't think soldiers would last long in one of these. Looked cool on screen though.
@@sibience Against killer robots that can slice through steel as easily as flesh, it'd be useless to build your suits with armour instead of more weapons and ammo capacity.
there were better versions in the second renaissence
@@CasperTheRamKnight I agree, although they still didn't last long in those mech suits either. I love the Animatrix though, they were far superior to the movies in a lot of ways.

I prefer the Animatrix one tho, it said that it was bigger than the ones on matrix , and heavily armored , of course it didn't do well during the machine war
I also prefer the Animatrix one. I wanted to model both of them but I decided to stick with this one as it had more image reference available and I also wanted to improve my rigging and animation skills. This one just has a lot more moving parts. I think I will have a go at making the other one at some point though.

I think that these would have been highly effective if they had Armor for any incoming fire.
Combined with force shield or some form of Electric pulse that is generated outwards..To protect the pilot from close combat Attack.
Or mabye an instant pilot launch exist system which is followed up by an emp blast from the machine.
We’ve seen their precursor being used during the war in the Animatrix. They were considerable more armoured than the ones in the movies. It worked well against the older machines but not so much with the new machines.
About the use of EMPs, I genuinely hope that the humans tried but failed using them due to the newer machines being resistant to them or something because operation Dark Storm was such a dumbass idea.
Lastly, if the pilot had to escape, they’re already dead.
Humans beings in this time period were working with scraps to make things. They were lucky they made this much, armor was out of the question.
The initial design proposal included armor to protect the pilot, but the armor was eliminated in order to present a visual representation of human vs. machine battle.

I was actually thinking about making that one too at some point. There doesn't seem to be any 3D models of it yet that I have found. The problem is there's a lot less visual reference for it. Last time I looked there was only a few screengrabs from the animation. This might be the reason it hasn't been modeled as much as this one. I will look into at again soon and see if I can find some better reference.

Yes I will make that one at some point if I can find good enough reference. Last time I looked for images there were really only a few stills from the Animatrix episode available.

Made for some cool mech action, but those things are so impractical it is crazy. Don't even get me started on the lack of pilot armor or the dangling ammo belts.
@@yarmaul1770armor would be incredibly useful, and drastically increase crew survivability against shrapnel and debris.

@@misterliligant5772 that's like pointing at American tanks that were destroyed by RPGs and deciding "Whelp, armor clearly doesn't work, let's stop putting it on tanks."
@@excier6074 The AI were picking them off like flies the moment they figured out how to deal with them. If the Zion defenders had them; more than likely the AI would've just tossed them around to crack them open. Or restrained the gunner and make them fall, and have another sentinel open the hull of the suit.
Would give them some valuable time but if your without a suit against a swarm of sentinels that can rip you to shreds your kinda screwed.
@@misterliligant5772 exactly my point, the fact that you have to close in and physically tear the armor apart, focusing on a single target at a time makes a huge difference. Without armor, a single stray round, some shrapnel from an explosion, or even some falling rubble can take out the suit pilots.
This apu dont have front protector armor 😐
Yes, not a very practical design. I think they did this for the purpose of the movie though so they could have actors piloting them which you could see as opposed to them being enclosed and just looking like robots. The ones in the Animatrix were much more practical.

Well the last movie kind of killed it and should never have been made, it made the sequals look like masterpieces. The Wachowskis apparently made it bad on purpose because they didn't want to make another movie which is understandable but to intentionally make a film bad just because you don't want to do it is like sticking two fingers up at all the fans of the franchise. I won't watch any of their movies again after that.

"ARMORED" personnel unit........there is literally zero "armor" around the pilot. worst mech ever.
Yes it's more like an exo suit than a mech. In the movie I guess they made it like this because they wanted you to see the people controlling them rather than just completely enclosed CG mechs. The whole design has a lot of problems though. Like the amount of ammo they can store for each gun would probably run out in a seconds or minutes based on the fire rate in the movie. Then they don't move very fast either. On a practical level they would be better off with gun turrets on wheels but they wouldn't look as cool in the movie.
There's a lot of suspension of disbelief involved with this one.
The armored versión of the apu it's see in animatrix, the original model has a armor For the Pilot
@@aoshiknight14heroforfun Yes I was talking about that version with another person in the comments. That was a much more practical design.
This APU is more like the mech suit from the Aliens movie with guns. It would be great for loading and unloading stuff but not good for combat.
