It's really sad to see what aesthetic standards have done to a working breed like the German Shepherd. They are no longer fit for purpose with the sloped back, hocks nearly touching the ground and nearly crossing as he walks. They were meant to be strong agile dogs, now for some reason we think making them look like they are gliding even at the expense of their long-term health and strength is somehow preferable? I cannot believe that kennel clubs are still pushing this and breed clubs are allowing it. It's better than it was 10 years ago but I still think the breed standard needs to be changed. They should look similar to the Mal, at least anatomically with a straight back and walking upright on their toes not sinking back onto their hocks
The show line GSDs are somewhat different than the working line GSDs, angulation doesn't effect viability and soundness as a working GSD, it's all about OFA certification regarding hips and elbows. Look at Shield K9's breeding lines out of Europe, they're on UA-cam.
I have a working line Czech male. His back is straight. Thick bones and slightly over 100 lbs. A very serious and powerful protector. Also have a German show line female and her slope is very subtle due to stricter breeding standards than American or Canadian show lines.
they are bred to be efficient herders. most show line dogs participate in herding as their gait allows for more ground covered in a shorter amount of time. it has no effect on their longevity.
I always love th rough collies, but seldom even place in group. As a kid had collies, Lassie type pet quality, no where near th heavy coated show types. Still had to be groomed often. So loyal great companions,..
That German Shepherd looked like it was walking on air! I had a feeling that one would win. The Malinois was pretty but the head was a bit strange, as it had a downward pointing muzzle and really no stop like a Borzoi. I have a Belgian Malinois and his head looks more like a German Shepherd only leaner.
yeah, that handler needs a new job! before they even set out, she said "easy" and yanked up on the lead. instead of working with the breed, she is intent on having it all her way.
I agree and was looking for comments on this! The way she kept jerking on his very tight lead, and her scolding of him - “stop it…do this” and her irritation with the poor guy were hard to watch.
My favorite category. As always, my vision is filled first with the Border Collie followed by the sharp eared Shepards, ala GSD and Belgians. At least the GSD won in this go 'round.

It's th onlybbreed gets stacked, called 3point stack,, one rear leg toward front, gives more slope then standingnormally . Was not over angulated Ppl that have see, or have GS , are pet quality, & think that's way they should be. That GS was pretty well balanced.
He was also walking on his hooks which most seem to be missing here, there's more to look for than just the angulation of the spine when in a stack. Slow the video down and you'll see it. Working dogs who are running on the backs of their legs won't last two minutes.
OH MY GOD YOU HAVE A PULI?! I was showing my husband this video, trying to show how oddly fun it is to watch dog shows, and he’s commenting on all the weird textures of the doggos…. I say “have you ever seen those dogs with dreads?” and he hadn’t, and then we watch two more dogs and boom: the dread dog! Lookin like a mop floating around, haha. I never thought the mop doggy would be in this category!!! What does yours look like? I assume this puli had to have grown his fur out for the show, and a typical pet would be groomed more frequently, right? Does yours still have the little dreads though? Does it grow that way? Does yours walk around mopping the house for you?!
The Old English Sheepdog was my favorite and I would have picked him/her if I was the judge. I would admit that the handler was a bit too firm but I hear that Old English Sheepdogs are notoriously stubborn dogs. Also the OED handler is the same handler for the Clumber Spaniel in the Sporting Group. Same salmon pink dress and curly hair. My other favorites were the Bouvier des Flandres, Swedish Vallhund, Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Also, not a fan of the slanted back for the German Shepherd. Show rings often exist to show and exemplify the history, longevity and characteristics of a breed and their temperament/capabilities.
