Along with humans, orangutans belong to the Hominidae family tree, which stretches back 14 million years. But it’s not just their striking red hair that makes orangutans unique among our great ape cousins. Lu Gao shares some amazing facts about these incredibly intelligent great apes from Asia.

I am Indonesian, living in Java to be exact.
A brief: We have more than 17.000 islands, and our population is about 250.000.000 people, where almost 200 millions of them live only in Java and Bali. I would say this is why our people are less concerned about the other islands such Borneo and Sumatra where deforestation occurs the most; simply because it doesn't have a direct impact in our lives. We hardly get paid for our daily needs, how do we take care of other things like that? I mean we don't have a choice.
The second reason is that we are developing country, we need money to feed poor people in small cities. Thus, we let foreign investors to invest in such industry because we are helpless to process our own natural resources.
So would you rather to; save the orangutans and let the number of unemployment raise, or just leave it that way.
My friends who live in Borneo say that the haze happen every year due to the deforestation, that it becomes a common thing.
One local actor said that: Indonesia is not a POOR country, Indonesia is POORLY MANAGED country.

its tragic but normal that we will destroy the world more because
of the problem u show and its not just indonesia.
But is there no kind of possibility for reforstation?

Yes but poor choices have poor consequences. I would consider it a poor choice to continue to allow deforestation to happen, destroying thousands of acres of natural rainforest that is home to an endangered species. The consequence would inevitably lead to extinction, which is horrible... no matter how many people are employed- it's not worth losing a beautiful, intelligent species over. Ever.

"How smart is forest people."
Just out of interest, how do you know if an animal has recognised itself in a mirror?
The orangutans recognise that there is a mark on their face which was put there by scientists
The test is debatable in its legitimacy, but the procedure is the animal is anesthetized and paint is put on a place that the animal can't see themselves like their face. If the animal touches the paint spot while looking in the mirror it's assumed they recognize themselves.
What about dolphins, how do they touch their face. They have self awareness as well

This brings me back to my favorite Edger Allen Poe storie.
A few years ago, I watched a young orangutan at the Phoenix zoo as she fiddled with a thin blanket and a rope. One end of the rope was attached to a high branch so she could swing around from her tree house, and the other end was a small ring that held the rope together. I couldn't figure out what she was doing. She sat there for a full couple minutes, focusing on the ring at the end of the rope, totally carefree to my presence.
Suddenly, progress.
She managed to feed the blanket through the ring, and pulled it until both ends dangled freely at the end of the rope, effectively extending its swinging radius an extra few feet.
She proceeded to try it out, now able to swing from the treehouse all the way down to her ground, and-more impressively-all the way back up. I laughed in joy and considered how lucky I was to have witnessed such a clever display, but looking back, I bet that orangutan was always coming up with new tools and toys and contraptions. Marvelous creatures.
About "Fruit Soup" TED-Ed is a channel with over 10 million subscribers, this a fully animated video and the lady reading is extremely skilled.
