- Israel has announced plans to replace its aging fleet of US-made Patriot air defense systems with more advanced alternatives within the next two months. The decision comes after a history of mixed success with the Patriot system, which was first deployed during the 1991 Gulf War. Despite its induction into the Israeli military in 1991, the Patriot system achieved its first interception only in 2014. With the rise of more sophisticated threats, including a recent barrage of missiles and drones from Iran, Israel seeks to bolster its air defense capabilities. The move to replace the Patriots aligns with Israel's broader strategy of modernizing its multi-tiered air defense arsenal, which includes the short-range Iron Dome, medium-range David's Sling, and long-range Arrow systems. In another article, in 1991, Iraq shot 40 scuds at Israel. At the time the US claimed the Patriot intercepted 80~90% of them. These were the Pac-2. But a few years later Israel says of the 40 only 1 or 2 were intercepted and possibly zero were brought down by the Patriot. The article then goes on to say Ukraine needs these Pac-2 and the newer Pac-3 missiles. Claiming these brought down the Russian Hypersonic missile.

Not really. The US found a way to cut costs as Patriot missiles would be expensive. This news often makes you believe that Israel is taking independent decisions. All the Israeli missile defenses and even missiles are funded by the US. The Iron dome missiles were shipped to Israel by the USA because Israel ran out of them. What do you think the US foreign aid bill for Ukraine and Israel was?

The system has gone through many upgrades since the 90s. Things change. It may be obsolete to the Israelis because they field some pretty cutting edge gear, but that doesn’t make it useless for other theaters.

Israel has Barak 8 successfully tested the Navy version, modification required for land version
Patriot and Iron dome are basically glorified C-RAM (Counter Rocket Artillery Mortar) systems. Land based Phalanx, Goalkeeper, Mantis systems, would be far more efficient at countering Rockets Artillery and Mortar. Less reload time, cheaper ammunition. Iron Beam, DEW (Direct Energy Weapons)/HEL(High Energy Lasers)? expensive and unreliable, if it ain't broke don't fix it!
