- You probably missed some tell-tale signs that Perry and Della were a lot closer than you thought on "Perry Mason." See the scenes from the show that prove it, as Raymond Burr tells author Brian McFadden about his real-life relationship with the lovely Barbara Hale.
They had a deep affection for each other that never faded.
She knew he was gay for 35 years and never said a word.
He said once that he truly loved her. You can tell that they had a deep and respectable relationship.💖
I believe it! I do think that deep down he was attracted to her inside and out. I’m saying that because Rock Hudson and Doris Day ( Pillow Talk) were not attracted to each other at all. ( yes I know Rock was a homosexual- I don’t understand that way of thinking).

William Hopper, son of Hedda Hopper who did a gossip type column for newspapers. I, too, miss William.

My husband and I watch Perry Mason every weekday morning on Me-TV. We really enjoy watching Perry and Della. Regardless about Raymond being gay, they had a true and deep affection for each other. ♥️♥️

I watch Perry Mason twice a day on weekdays on FETV. Never mind that I haven’t hit an episode I haven’t seen before. I love this show.

Barbara Hale was every bit the classy, personable and warm individual in real life as she was as Della Street on Perry Mason. It was easy for her to play herself on the show -- and she did!

There is a line from the Perry Mason TV movies that sticks in my mind as showing the feelings that Barbra Hale had for Raymond Burr. Della is talking to the long time secretary of a murdered blackmailer. The victim's secretary talks about her boss being difficult, even cruel at times; but never with her. Della comments that what they had was like a marriage. She asks "How long were you together?". She answers "Thirty three years." Della says, "I've been with mine over 40."

I love watching Raymond Burr because my dad looked enough like him during the early shows to have been his twin. Dad is gone now, so this is so my way of getting to see him again.

The role model show that set the standard for all courtroom TV shows to follow. There was chemistry between all of the major cast members and their on-screen characters. Lieutenant Tragg (Ray Collins) was a famous actor in his own rite, with his feature-film debut in Citizen Kane as Kane’s political rival. Really missed him in the Perry Mason show after he passed away in 1965.

My grandfather absolutely loved Perry Mason, talking about him like he was a friend. I loved watching this show, still do, and the theme music can bring me to tears. If my grandfather only knew about Raymond's personal life!

I remember seeing Perry Mason late night and I saw on the bottom of the tv series the announcement the station made of the passing away of Della Street (Barbara Hale), I was in tears , I started collecting dvd of the tv series, but I still see it on tv , I believe that her son is still living , he also joined part of the crew as the young detective in the series for a while . Yes, Diana, I thought she was fantastic. Her son's name is William Katt. He played the part of Paul Drake's son in the TV movies. He left when he got an offer to do a show of his own.

I’m 65 and grew up watching Perry and Della. They will forever be my favorites! I’ve done a lot of reading about Raymond Burr and he was a class act! He donated a fortune to charities and things that were important to him. RIP Raymond! You were a man amongst men!

My favorite Perry-Della scene was when Della asked to borrow $20,000, no questions asked, and Perry immediately wrote her a check.
My favorite scene was at the end of one of the movies when he gave her some pearls and said, " one of these days we"ll go to where these grew up" !!💞💞💞

Perry Mason was a class act, not misogynistic even if the people around him were, one company was full of men saying they didn’t pay attention to what the women at work would say. Perry always gave equal credit where credit was due. Della and Perry are one of the all time BEST tv partners. Paul Drake is right up there with them.
Agreed, Kathleen. He respected Della's opinions on things and took her advice. You said it best when you used the term "partners." To me, it was always clear they were a team!

I've been watching PM a lot lately since nothing much else is on. They had a great easy, flirty relationship that was fun to watch.

i remember when i was around 12 watching Perry Mason. i loved the show - just loved it. i had a crush on Paul Drake - sigh :) (William Hopper - Hedda's son) one thing though, that i will never forget. the actor who played Hamilton Berger (William Talman) got lung cancer and he made a commercial about how it happened to him because of smoking. Don't smoke, he said. and i never did. he was an amazing person. i don't care about any of their private lives - i just cared that Perry Mason was a wonderful show and the actors were terrific as was the writing. always a treat what was going to happen.

It wouldn't be difficult to imagine Hamilton Burger or lieutenant tragg pulling Perry off to the side and asking him, " why don't you just marry her?! "
Or at least ask Perry, “Hey, are you banging your secretary?”

Ray was gay, but that wasn't the reason why they did not pursue the relationship any further. Barbara Hale was married at the time, raising a young son, William Katt. She claims that she didn't want the young boy confused about her marriage and her role on TV... it wasn't until the TV movies many years later that on the screen at least, they got involved...

Mr. mcFadden, I grew up in Cloverdale, my Mom was the real estate agent that sold Asti, california to Pat Paulsen, and we used to pass Mr. Burr and Mr. Benevidez's orchid farm on Dutcher Creek Rd on our way back to our house on Dry Creek Rd. 😊😊! My family would either have brunch or dinner at Catelli's the Rex on Sundays in Geyserville. Thank you for showing the Very Gritty Perry Mason of the first two seasons. Folks don't really know how adult those season were. 🎉❤🎉❤😊. Thanks.
Thank you...I remember how enthusiastic he was when he told me they were putting their two properties together. At the time they were thinking of one big ranch to grow orchards, fruit trees, etc. The winery idea came a little later.

Thanks for posting. It brought a smile to my face remembering my grandmother who studied law but never practiced and never missed an episode. She'd clinch an unlit Parliament cigarette between her teeth and prided herself in correctly guessing who was guilty 9 out of 10 times.
Yeah, Perry, Della and Paul Drake were a particularly enjoyable trio together on screen. And as someone mentioned William Katt was Barbara's son. His father was Bill Williams. ( Kit Carson ) One of the things I like about shows of the period is seeing actors and actresses in their earlier roles. I remember for instance lovely Ellen Burstyn in an episode when she was still Ellen Mcrae. The fifties was also a great period for womens' fashion and it is particularly noticeable in this show.
I love watching the shows and going back, and I remember watching Kit Carson.
Perry Mason was one of the shows I begged permission to stay up late for when I was a kid. I think it was either before or after the Jackie Gleason show. Of course, the fact that Burr was homosexual doesn't taint his affectionate comradeship with Ms. Street, it makes it, to me, all the more charming. The original Perry Mason series started production in the year before I was born - and to this day, I rarely miss an episode, either at 9:00 AM or 11:30 PM.

Many people seem to confuse the actors with the role they were playing. I was a young girl in 1959 when this series debuted. It was my favorite show and even at 11 years old I even understood the special relationship between the 2.
There was always the hint of romance and in my young mind I kept hoping they would have a real romance. Their subtle dance around the possibility of romance added to the magic that made this show so great.
No one could have portrayed Mason better than Raymond Burr. Still one of my favorites to this day.
So very well put, Joanne. We were about the same age watching the show, and I too remember the hint of romance. That air of "will they or won't they" just added to the show's appeal. Of course, in real life, Raymond and Barbara really did have a super-affection for each other, going back to the RKO days.
@@baileyellard1 thank you for your response. I feel fortunate that while I was growing up I had access to such a quality show that no one had to worry about being inappropriate. Actually it raised the bar a bit for my analytical thinking from following clues, and trying to work the case along with Mason.
Raymond Burr was at his best in this role, often conveying so much with just a glance or the subtle smile in his eyes.
He and Barbara Hale were perfectly cast in their roles.

The Perry Mason books show a very healthy romantic relationship between Perry and Della Street. Let's not confuse the actors with the characters they portray. I do appreciate, however, that Barbara Hale, happily married, and Raymond Burr were dear friends in real life.

She had more than one child. I saw a video of her husband with their daughter, and of course the greatest American hero is her son.

Loved the Perry Mason show.
Barbara was no spring chicken when Perry Mason first aired, she was 35. Still, she was a heartthrob and could compete head-on with actresses nearly half her age as far as looks. Sophisticated, classy lady.
She really was one good looking woman and looked younger than her years on the show. And there were many actresses who appeared on the show who WERE half Barbara's age, but they were no match for her. As you say, CLASSY!
Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry and Della were much closer than the show implied. Of course his Mason was much more daring too. In the books he tiptoed along the very edges of the law occasionally stepping slightly over the line, even creating false evidence from time to time.
However it seems that the actors on that show really cared about each other and yes they were just acting however if you really care about each other it shows. A W

When Barbara Hale was asked to reprise her role as Della Street in the 1980's, she said yes on one condition: That Raymond Burr would co-star as Perry Mason. William Hopper was deceased, so Barbara's real-life son took over.

It is my opinion that Ms. Barbara Hale was as pretty a woman as you could see, especially in the face. I think she resembled Olivia Dehavilland, Vivian Leigh, and Susan Hayward, or they resembled her, however you want to say it. Drop dead gorgeous.
She was attractive but Barbara Eden as seen on Andy Griffith was truly a Goddess.Despite being the dumbest episode ever made I watch every rerun just to see her.Why put a manicurist in a Barber Shop with a Beauty Parlor close by ?

The Della Street character influenced me to become a legal secretary. Taking shorthand and transcribing my notes was my favorite part of the job.
Great! My husband and Is not a attorny nor am I a paralegal. However we will go back and for and try to solve mysteries of all sorts. Our family calls us Perry Mason and Della Street.

It's a tease, to get you to watch the video, which was actually very heartwarming; I'm glad I watched it. And, yes, I do know that Raymond Burr was gay...but that has nothing to do with the love they felt for each other; the true love of friendship...so important in this life and it has nothing to do with sexuality. It's funny, but I never realized just how good looking a man he was until I watched these clips! Then again, I was a kid when the show originally aired.
@@TisEyerish1 I was a kid when the show originally aired too, so wasn't paying much attention to how beautiful Barbara was. But they were both very good looking. If you see color shots of Raymond when he was young, he had the most amazing blue eyes. And Barbara looks beautiful in color too.

@silverbird58 No, not Hopalong Cassiday. That was William Boyd. Barbara's husband was Bill Williams (screen name) and he did westerns. I think his show was Kit Carson, but I can be mistaken.
@@maryoliver8596 Yes Mary, the show was Kit Carson and was on from 1951 until 1959. And Bill Williams was his screen name. His real name was William Katt and it was his son who co-starred in the Perry Mason TV movies.
