Facts
I find it extremely interesting that the actor, the guy that thrives on attention and being the center of attention, brought Goro to a secluded spot to kill him without an audience.
And he _still_ delivered the one-liner.
The arrogance left him when Goro broke his sunglasses.
He used the surrounding terrain to his advantage and he knew he had to finish the fight quickly or he'd get pounded.
Because he knows we are watching him
Never forget the one-liner. And don't forget to have a backup in case someone asks "what happened to the other guy?" In this case, something like "he fell for me" or "he took the short way down" work as pocket-replies.

Shang Tsung and Liu Kang were casted so perfectly, they really found actors that looked exactly like their characters for them
And shang tsung is still acting today in several roles and in the latest mortal Kombat, they even used his appearance.
They look like that to you because they were both great actors with great writing, not because they looked like a sprite. This wasnt ps5 graphics lmao, anyone with long dark hair would have fit the character model.
Linden Ashby was a good Johnny Cage, Christopher Lambert as Raiden and Brigitte Wilson as Sonya.
The movie was made around the idea of Jean-Claude Van Damme getting the Johnny Cage character, but he turned it down. Still, the Johnny Cage guy is also perfect, as everyone else in the movie.

This is the most popular opinion of all, not upopular at all.
This movie had character development and great music. Something the new movie lacked. Johnny overcoming the idea people would think he was fake; Sonya admitting even she needed help; and finally, the centerpiece of the movie: Liu Kang finally not blaming himself for his brother’s death. Got chills when he uttered to shang tsung “Chan chose his own path. Every man is responsible for his own destiny. SHANG TSUNG KILLED MY BROTHER!”
There was no new movie. Infact this is the only MK movie ever made. I hope they make a new one someday.

"This is where you fall down" is my favorite line in this movie. Just perfect. Johnny says it in complete annoyance at the stunt man early in the movie, who doesn't know his mark, then after proving himself the most legit of legit fighters, gets to say it to some outworld dragon-man, vindicating himself of everyone who cast doubt on his abilities. Flawless victory.
I wish it would have went down the way it does in the books instead of the movie, because it shows Goro’s honor as a warrior.

If so, the gist of it is Goro gets knocked off the ledge, but instead of it going down as it did, Johnny offers to help Goro up and Goro denies and pretty much says he's a Shokan and would be a disgrace to return home in defeat, so he chooses to let go instead iirc.

No joke, this is actually a great character moment for Johnny. He’s finally overcame his arrogance and has finally understood his place in the tournament, and chooses to go into a battle he doesn’t think he’ll win just to save his friends.

The truth is, the plot armor of Jonny Cage in this film was even greater than his daughter's in MKX.
How the heck was Jonny able to beat Goro in a fist fight? Shokans are basically draconic gorillas with four arms. And against Scorpion? He doesn't use regular fire, he uses Hellfire, Scorpion should've burnt Jonny and his shield to a crisp.
Hang on. He beat Goro using his brain instead of going in full force. Even though he beat Scorpion at the end, Scorpion was pummeling Johnny Cage throughout that fight. That was a tough battle for Cage.

I absolutely love that they saved the nut punch for Goro of all opponents. This was just a great way to put in some much warranted fan service.
Iirc you could attack Goro when he was posing at the beginning of the fight, in the games.
I was like 9 when this movie came out and begged my mom to take me to see it. When Johnny Cage dropped the "$500 sunglasses" line it made me laugh uncontrollably, even more than the groin punch. Wish I could relive that moment one more time before I die.
The only ACTUAL flawless victory in the film.

Considering that Goro was animatronic puppet and not an actor in a costume... That is one of if not the most convincing performance by animatronic puppet in history. Looked so lifelike.

They all were. Robin was a damn good Liu Kang and Cary's Shang Tsung is still the definitive portrayal, so much so that they remodeled the character after him in the new game.
As a kid in the theater back then, when Johnny Cage did the low-blow on Goro the entire theater went crazy with laughter and cheers like I've never seen before or since.

Everyone in the theater was dying of laughter when Johnny punched him in the nuts. I also love the detail of him holding his nuts with the bottom arms and balancing himself with the upper arms.

Exactly: punch him in the nuts to get him to stop thinking/piss him off, set an ambush, finish the job. Hell, Goro was barely able to stand after that low blow so combine that with the surprise from the ambush and Johnny not letting up once his advantage is secured and this fight makes a lot of sense. Goro was portrayed here as relying solely on his inhuman endurance and power to bulldoze his enemies. Johnny short circuited that plan.
It was still plot armour though, in that Goro just stood around with his mouth open whilst Johnny delivered his cheesy line, before easily kicking his ass. If Goro was even half decent at fighting, then the weight and size difference alone should have been enough for him to easily crush Johnny.
A good example of a dude using his brain to defeat a bigger stronger opponent is Daniel Craig's Bond vs Dave Bautista's Hinx in the movie: Spectre.
And he also used the stage fatality.

This film is on a level of drama the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the legendary playwrights of Ancient Rome.
Well, if the playwrights were drunk and just going full-force while having a blast at the Colosseum.
The animatronic monsters used in 90’s movies and horror films added a whole other level of creepiness. The uncanny style made it so much more unsettling

@Tariq Waseem well I'm actually not blaming anyone, I know it wasn't easy bringing these characters to life using old tech, the movie itself was good for it's time but now watching all these clips again, it's just idk how some people can say the old one looks better than the new one at least the special effects area.
90's kid here, back in the day Mortal Kombat was the life. MK's 1,2,3 and the 1995 film was one of the best. Also back when games had less or no dialogue certain games had no save points. Those were the days simple times.

I remember seeing this movie when it came out opening weekend. I was in 4th grade. The theater I saw it in had a hokey (which at the time I thought was the coolest thing ever) martial arts "demonstration" before the movie.
I came out of that theater throwing lame kicks and punches hyped out of my mind. Good times.
Same with me. I saw this in theaters way back in 95. After coming out of the theater I just wanted to play Mortal Komabt ASAP another coolest thing about those times. Those were the good old days.
I was 9 years old back in 95 when I saw film. I saw it after a week after it's release, the room was half filled. The good old days though. I also saw the 2nd film in theaters as well in 97. Thanks for asking.
No matter how much anyone denies it, both these movies by Paul Anderson were awesome and really captured the feel and atmosphere of the game. And that's the most important thing for any game-based movie.
I liked his other works better such as Phantom thread or the master

I still think she was pretty good, I think she did great for her martial arts scene I'm happy that they gave her kind of like a street fighting kickboxing style. I also thought her break between her legs was pretty awesome. Honestly I thought she did pretty good

@@seriousnesstv7902 Obviously. My point was that the whole scene is bad screenwriting. Goro was supposed to be a scary, intimidating monster. In the lore he is a 9 time winner of mortal kombat. Johnny is forced to make a cheap shot just to run away. Then they get on the cliff and Johnny clowns him in 5 seconds. Based on everything we know about the characters, Johnny should have lost when his first "surprise" kick didn't knock Goro down.
What is so awesome to me is that not only was Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa the original actor for Shang Tsung in this movie, but he also voices him in MK11!
Yeah they kind of did that on purpose like having the Raiden from this movie in the game as well

I loved the soundtrack to this movie when I was a kid. Blew my mind. Probably was my first taste in electronic dance music before I understood it.
Killing this man off in the sequel was the worst decision made in this series, which says a lot

Fun fact: there was a legal dispute between game Cage's motion capture actor and the game studio that made MK. He did motion capture for a character in a rival (MK clone) fighting game and did advertising for it where he "brilliantly" called out MK as the inferior series. Sadly for him, he got black balled by the MK studio AND the game he was in flopped horribly. So when they went to make MK3, they nixes Cage's role in the series by killing him off, thereby no longer needing his actor and to also rub lemon juice and salt in the motion capture actor's wounds

In most scenes, Goro was an actual robot with controls, similar to what you saw in original Alien movies. At the time, it's easier to add "weight" to a character and its action with a robot than CG.
Say what you want about Paul W. S. Anderson, but he was able to “mask” Goro very well
