Work and Travel is what changed my mind on Jamaica's economy. Take loan fi guh overseas fi work, pay off that loan in no time and work enough money fi pay school fee and buy couple tings as well, in FOUR MONTHS.
Me a work 9-5 in jamaica now, that required a degree, and my pay is nothing close to my 4 month job in a theme park (that didnt require a degree).
I will say this and stand on it, if you go overseas and don't make it, your fault dat. AND you can make it a Jamaica (just affi work 5 times harder, or have links)
Love mi country, but mi country doe love me.

I made the decision to come to America after graduating Utech and was unemployed for 2 years. I was 24 at the time and didn’t even have a Jamaican dollar to my name. I found an opportunity and My family pool together and help me come up on a j1 visa and the rest history. I paid off my SLB in no time and has been blessed enough to help family and friends back home. It hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A lot of Jamaicans have this fantasy of America like it’s easier here. It’s not. Many come here and find that out the hard way. Rent, cost of food, and clothing in the states is so high due to inflation. Let not even get started on the gas prices. My grandma use to always say Grow come see when I asked her questions. But in y’all case come co see. just like in Jamaica your not making a lot of money unless you have a really good job. Everything else is pay check to pay check still. Lastly violence is everywhere. Jamaican think because tourist come to Jamaica and spend money they have money, half those tourist put that trip on a credit card Nd go back to the state’s Nd live in a shoebox. Yes Jamaica’s government is highly corrupt but so is the government in the states. All in all everyone who took the time to read this, before you make a decision, make sure you fully understand what you are getting into.

Another Canadian-Jamaican here. I live in a big city in my own home in a very top-tier part of Toronto, drive a luxury car and I have always felt safe. Recently the wave of car-jacking has me on edge so I use Uber a lot BUT it's still pretty safe. I would live in Jamaica before I live in America though. The gun violence in America is shocking. No where is safe there. Mass shootings in schools, churches, malls, public places..everywhere!!! There has been 314 MASS SHOOTINGS in the USA thus far this year!!!
Yes, Jamaica has its issues but it's still safer than USA. I have family in high levels of law inforcement in Jamaica. Canada and the USA and they, AND STATICS, AND FACTS, will concur.
The negative narrative about Jamaica is purposeful by the American controlled media. Jamaica is what Jamaica is by design. It's still a plantation.

The difficulty to get even a bank account in Jamaica is ridiculous. I recently just tried opening a bank Account in Jamaica so I could cut the western union life out and they asked me for my American social security number, I said ma'am what does my American social have to do with a Jamaican bank account, I have a TRN number, I have a business account, I just want a savings account. It was a whole issue, ultimately I said it's okay, I can open another savings account in America with just my drivers license or go to Miami and deal with the Jamaican bank there with no issues, I don't trust the system here enough to give my Social from America which have no benefit to me here.

The banks will not do anything with the Social security number. If they only ask for your Social security number that is very easy for you to open an account unlike Jamaica who live here. A Jamaican who lives here we'll need two reference (from a JP, Pastor, School, or someone who has an account there who isn't your relative 😑), TRN, national ID/ passport and fill out a long piece of paper that they give you with more information.

    • @d9daprogrammer

@@fundash5124 They needed all of that plus my social security number. The red flag was the social security number, my American social cannot do nothing for me in Jamaica, and in America your social is your lifeline. The amount of banks that scam people in Jamaica due to corrupt workers does not sit well with me. Reason I said my TRN, references, drivers license, business account, passport etc should have been enough for them. Especially since they cannot run my credit from my social in Jamaica lol because it cannot be used there. So what's the point of asking for it, also asking for the same things as residents?

    Hi Dale,
You need to tell these males how to treat people who try their best to help them. I always hear you men talk about how the “ women “ be treating them.
No a lot of Jamaican men are very disrespectful. A lot of women “ genuinely “ help them and want to make life. They come here don’t want to learn a better trade. They come here want to live on the women. When they get called on it, they want to beat up on her.
You need to touch on that. That’s a big issue. That is why a lot of women are turning their backs on marrying Jamaican men.

Loyalty to one's country has limits. Jamaicans love their country and would be happy to build it up but the selfish few at the top, make living in Jamaica an unpleasant experience. Were me made to just suffer and suffer and suffer? Especially in a country as rich as Jamaica?!

This is from a Jamaican living in Canada for many years. let me tell you from my perspective real quick and from pure observation . I always tell people if you have a good job in Jamaica dont leave because the career that you are in , let's say for example Doctor,. Lawyer Teacher ect if you come here you have to start from scratch no matter how many years education & experince you have Canada wants you to go back to school and the fees are not cheap either. So you end taking a job that pays next to nothing because Canada says you don't have the " Canadian Work Experience "
    .
2- You see Taxi drivers here in Toronto Canada if you hold conversation with them they will tell you that Canada was very misleading .They advertised in these people country how jobs are here in Canada, but when you get here..you start from scratch • That's is not even worth starting over paying school fees for what you were an expert in your field back home. It just dont make no sense.
3- Times have change working under the table you have to know someone that has a link thru the Indian agency's to get you on.
4- Most Jamaicans that come here for donkey add years eventually go back to Jamaica to live once they reach a certain age.
5- Africa is more open and welcoming to Jamaicans . Your passport can get you far there. All land to buy in 1600us in Kenya that you can build on.
Africa is not this poor country that the TV has conditioned you to believe.
6- Their is also better countries out there than Canada/ US.
7- Nuff people have student loan in Toronto after College and University the careers they went to get a job in that field.. don't exist again.
8-Canada is not a better Rose. Because most while people are Not Living ..their only Existing and that's not away to be living.
Theres plenty of remote jobs now that exist due to the Plandemic most people are country hoping while working remotely..
Many Canadians have left gone Bali Indonesia and is working remotely making good money.

@DaleElliott there is no way I could watch this podcast and not leave a comment. Braindrain is the emigration of well trained an educated people leaving one country for another first an foremost, u are an educated person I watched ur movie u have raw talent and I want to see u on the big stages. I spend over 2 decades working in the tourism an hospitality industry I have a degree as well but I had to make the transition from Jamaica to America. It's simple the economy and the level of corruption to killing me mentally and physically, nowhere u go in this world is easy it's just ur determination and ambition mixed with willpower that will make the difference. I have added a link in the chain of debt and I have moved alittle molehill in just 2yrs since I got here and looking forward to blessed with the 10. My advice is for those who are left behind "find a way! Run! Swin! Borrow a few feathers from a johncrow and leave Jamaica" but when u do make sure u are prepared for work, it feels good when I get off work an roll back mi sunroof, I want the same for everybody. Jamaicans need fi wake up an form fool an "leggo de bird wid Andrew" because ah him alone jamaican economy ah benefit. Peace an blessings bredda

Might I add school cost me nothing out of pocked. In 4 years I was able to buy a house and 2 cars. I could never dream of doing this in JA and at the time I had what was considered a good job but as soon as my daughter came into the picture I had to make a move for the better.

Had a great job with the government, I was living ok but living and taking care of family is very financially challenging so that's why I decided to leave. So much more can be done with less. My research indicated that people from various professions were leaving at a rapid rate, Teacher (especially Math and English), Lawyers, Doctors, Dentists, IT Programmers and Engineers had large numbers.Remittance alone cannot save Jamaica's economy or contributions from the Diaspora. Provide people meaning opportunities and they will make a way.

But the grass won’t be greener on the other side of you DON’T have a plan. The west is extremely competitive and I know people who have a master’s degree in England but have to settle with less due to the competition of the rat race. As long as you have a plan, you’ll make it far in life.

Love the discussion. I agree with some of the points you raised. The brain drain is so real but it actually benefits the government and politicians because the young minds that would be brilliant enough to implement and sustain positive change are leaving so they have no real competition. Which is the saddest part.
Crime is everywhere and struggle is everywhere and as a Jamaican still living in Jamaica I can appreciate that it will seem worst here and perhaps it is in a sense but it's just a matter of what type of crime. It's the usa with random mass shootings that you could get caught up in vs. The individual and targetted shootings here. At the end of the day America, Canada, UK, Europe etc. Has many more opportunities available so presumably as long as you're clear on your vision and willing to work hard, you can do much more with less and in Shorter period of time.
In traveling, I have never wanted to do more than visit overseas for like a month or less. I won't say I will never leave but at the moment I hope not to have to. I do not fault persons who leave for a better life. Everyone has to plan for themselves and do what works for them. I am hard working and I may not be strugggling to eat or make ends meet but with the mind and aptitude I have along with academic qualifications and expertise I know for a fact I would be miles and miles ahead of where I am now had I left. It's just about what you're willing to lose or keep and each person has to do what's right for them.
Question though....I understand planning to budget what you will send to your mother, grandmother etc. But why would your "bredren" be in that equation? Unless he's newly down on his luck, he needs to sort out his own life 😀.
Keep up these types of discussions.
