      lamont johnson, you can keep your Crown Jewel. That Jewel of yours sucked up my brother and my cousin's blood. As child, I celebrated the Independence of Jamaica. Then, it was a beautiful country, almost paradise on earth. Where I come from, we never locked our doors when leaving the house, and we never experienced a break-in. There was need for police coming to our community; murder was unheard of. The only problem we had were women quarrelling or fighting over men. Sometimes, people had dispute over land. The only fear people had back then was spiritual. Jamaicans, need to do something about the gun violence that is taking the lives of thousands of Jamaicans, and stopping old people overseas from coming home. We have a right to come back to our country without the fear of being murdered. It's terrible! People want to come home.

    • @876Misty
      @876Misty 3 роки тому +9

      There is a crime problem here, especially per capita of the population. I was isolating out one demographic, which is this perception that RETURNING Jamaicans are hunted down just for who they are. The data does not really support that ,but those cases are often high profile ( as if a returning Jamaican's death is somehow worse than another's), that is the MYTH I was addressing. Crime is real here, just as it is in Memphis where I came from,

    I love these podcasts!!! Where do you find people with hearts like she has. This lady is a living legend!
    I was born in England to Jamaican parents. Grew up in Jamaica from I was a young child, did my primary school there, split my high school days between Canada and Jamaica with University also in Canada where I now live most of the time. I was thinking of looking at Ghana for house and land to live after this pandemic cools down a bit. Even though myself and family already have house and land in Jamaica I can go to, but have been turned off by the violence I've seen myself and heard of and grew up with in Jamaica. With all these positive stories though I might have to take a second look at Jamaica. I still do visit when I can cause I do have close family down there, but wasn't planning to go back to live. I'm sure Ghana has their own brand of crime and violence, I just haven't seen or heard how it is down there, I will have to visit and experience the place for myself. Africa is somewhere a lot of us want to go to anyway. Happy to hear people talk about Jamaica in a positive light, and also doing positive things for the people down there. They need to provide jobs for these young people so they don't turn to crime as easily. The educational structure has to made available to all young people no matter what financial background you come from. Jobs have to be a reality for people who complete school at any level, high school and post secondary education. So they can provide for themselves and feed their families and elders. Love, appreciation and humility to everyone living down there in Jamaica. It is a place of beauty and natural fruits and food like not many other places. I send my love to the Caribbean.

      Lorna there are literally thousands of returnees living a happy peaceful life here in Jamaica. Whitehouse and Mandeville come to mind for two places I know are famous for this. Out of all the returnees who have gone, come back and re -settled here, that is a vast number. You can't say everything you want to say in the context of an interview. Just this morning I was talking to another African - American friend who moved here a few years before I did and is STILL living happily and safely here in Negril. We were talking about Belmont and the area around 9 mile, both of which I have stayed in. NO VILLAS , I stayed in people's homes in the community. In 9 mile for example, my hostess was leaving off for work and did not lock her door. When I reminded her she should lock it she told me no one there locks their doors and no one troubles anything. In Belmont my friends and I spread all our electronics out on the veranda, so when we were about to leave our host saw us gathering things up to store them and told us to leave them right where they were , everything will be fine. Our Negril based experience did not like that idea , but we did it . Over our entire stay there, it was so nice, windows open, door unlocked , no issues. WE FELT FREE. There are MANY communities in beautiful Jamaica like this where the pressure is off , and the living is perfect. You can't tell people not to come back here because they will be the target of crime or worse, when that is NOT TRUE about the whole of this beautiful island. Like in Treasure Beach area, and Alligator Pond is another space I can think of. I just want to neutralize the hysteria with another perspective.

      I just got off the phone with a Govt. official and fact of the matter is the statistics do not bear out the notion that returnees in particular are targeted from crime here in Jamaica. That was the population i was referring to specifically. That myth keeps many a good Jamaican from returning to make Jamaica their home again and contribute.

    Love this interview inspirational lady! She is very intelligent and brings people together. Crime happens everywhere here in the UK it is swept under the carpet and downgraded to an incident. Have faith pray for Jamaica if you are that concerned about 'crime' we claim to be people of faith and yet quite a lot of us happily slag off Jamaica. I don't hear English people slagging off the UK. They big it up and have mad love for their country even the bad weather! In short they make the best of things. Wherever I go I big up Jamaica and people are always so kind and generous towards me. . .

Then one year I took a 5 dollar ride up to 7 mile beach..needless to say it was love at first site. I gave up on the big all inclusive resorts because I don't drink or eat alot. The Negril Treehouse is a complete gem. I stayed a bit longer this year. Jamaica is where my heart is. ❤. Just think about every single person who left Jamaica and then returned to do either 6 months here or live full time. Ok now calculate that # in you mind. You have to count every single person who returned and is still living here who returned. Ok now think about the crimes you have heard about and the # of returnees. Now do you see my point? I am not talking about the overall crime stats, just the ones against returnees, and now the notions people have just don't make sense. now do they? There are THOUSANDS, literally THOUSANDs of returnees living here happily and peacefully. We cannot focus our energy and attention solely on the bad in this life.

I don’t see returning residents in Barbados, Grenada, St Lucia , among other Islands being target and killed simply because they want to resettle in the land of their birth. What about those who never left Jamaica and just want to live a decent life and they are killed, for what they have. She can sit there in here villa and say anything.

Friends, family or people that work for them and that could happen anywhere. We just need to learn to be careful of where we choose to live and the people that we keep around us. Returning residents not supposed to be fearful just because we lived, work hard, and want to live in our country of birth because someone might kick down your door and kill you and your family.

      John L...... If you take in to account, ALL of the Jamaicans who have returned to live in this country. Think of how vast that number is. It is HUGE. Then take the cases you know of where something horrible has happened to a returnee ( and yes ,every life is valuable), the data will show that even though those cases are high profile, it is not an epidemic as perceived to scare well meaning Jamaicans from returning to their home. AND SHE DOES NOT LIVE IN A VILLA , she lives right smack in the middle of the Jamaican community on the West End of Negril.

    I been going to Jamaica since 1996 but didn't get to see the real Jamaica until 2007. Ever since I got to see the real Jamaica and locals I never went back to the big fancy hotels. Some people would wonder why I don't want to do big resorts and stay in just a basic room. It is because I want to give to the hard working locals the Jamaicans and Jamaica. I have stayed and Travellers a few times but ate lots of breakfasts there. I have stayed at a few more and try not to pick favorites. I want to spread the love a little and well in honesty I do best as I can with I can afford.
    I met Negril 8 years ago and I met Misti 5 years ago. I love staying local and giving back to the locals and stay local owned. I love love love Captial of Casual and I love Misti how she helps everyone. I think she is one of the best expats on the island along with a few more and I have a good reason to think so. Misti has always been giving and kind since I met her and before Capital of Casual. My reason is that while Misti retires she isn't taking anything from anyone she spends her time telling everyone about local places hidden and close by and asks for nothing in return and she gets nothing in return. Since Covid groups formed to help the hungry and Misti posted all about it so we could help. No there wasn't a big huge ton of money but the help that was given fed people. So while she is retired she still working and doing things on Captial and keeping it clean and free from unnecessary drama. There is so much wonderful things that have happened on Capital of Casual so make sure if you read this come join us.

    In over 30 years of returning to Negril I have never had a bad experience with the exception of leaving everything has been so positive, Negril is the lick 👅, everything is good especially The Coral Seas resorts and the Negril Tree House, Great staff so helpful and alway friendly. If you have time venture to Orange Hill and ask for Auntie Hyacinth. Real people❤️💛💚🖤
